Since installing yosemite my computer/screen blacks out, but still running

Since installing yosemite last week, my computer/screen blacks out, but still running. I have since rebooted everything, started from scratch and utilizing my external drive transferred all files/apps back. Did not help, in fact it is getting worse. Computer screen blacks out every 5 min or so and have to power up again. Also, continue to get Java message updates even after all have been updated over and over again. Any suggestions? Thanks!

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Why does my computer screen black out

    Re: Forums
I'm using an Hp Pavilion Slim Line s5260f desk top pc.  I have posted this thread several weeks ago.  It seems that I loose my screen on occassion while I am operating my computer.  When this happenes  the computer blacks out and my screen turns into a very dark shade of blue almost black. Having to force shut down the computer to turn it on again.   In the past I have changed my monitor which worked for a while.  Another time a short while ago when this happened  I unpluged the power chord and the chord going from my monitor to my tower  and plugged them in again which worked for a while   It has blacked out again.  I am asking if anyone has an idea of why this happens on occasion so I can try to address this issue be it now or the next time it happens.  I am also hoping that I have posted this question in the proper catogory in the Hp forum.  Thank you Jerry.

    JrJerry,
Is this the Nvidia driver update that failed to install? It should install.
Working on instructions for event viewer (event viewer may be a dead end) but could you send a screenshot of Device Manager?
Go to Control Panel - Device Manager. Then use Microsoft's snipping tool.
It should look like this ( image ).
I am interested in the display adapter. This image is an example of a system with no device errors.
Please open an admin command prompt. Then enter this command: sfc /scannow
One last thought, roughly when did you purchase your system and when did this problem start? If the system was fine until recently and the Nvidia drivers (software) are corrupted then a restore should correct the problem. I would only suggest this course of action after all else fails, especially not being able to update the Nvidia drivers. If the problems remains after a restore then it is hardware or heat related.
We may have to restore the system back the factory image. Did you create an HP Recovery Disk set?
Make sure you back up all important data as a system recovery will reformat your harddrive and, in the process, erase all data and programs you have installed since you purchased the computer.
If we can't solve this problem maybe one or more of the other very knowledgeable forum members can assist.
One last point, in an earlier reply I had suggested you try DVI if currently using VGA and vice versa. This was suggested to eliminate a possible flakey input-output vga or dvi port connection to the mainboard. This would indicate a mainboard failure. The only solution would be to replace the mainboard with the same type (correctly tatooed HP) mainboard. It may be cheaper to replace the system if this is the case.

  • Since installing yosemite the colors are washed out and whenever I restart the machine it reverts to the yosemite screensaver even though i have set a different desktop picture.

Since i installed yosemite, the some parts of the screen can hardly be seen and whenever I restart the desktop display reverts back to the yosemite screensaver which I have never selected.  Do i need to reinstall or what.

    Please do the following.<br><br>
#In the location bar where you normally type in a web address, type '''about:config''' and hit Enter.<br><br>
#If you see a window which says "This might void your warranty!", click the button which says "I'll be careful, I promise" so you can continue with the next step.<br><br>
#In the filter at the top, type: '''keyword.URL'''<br><br>
#Double click it and remove whatever's in there and replace it with http://www.google.com.au/search?q= and then click OK.<br><br>
    #Close the tab
The URL to add in "keyword.URL" becomes a link in this post, so right click it and choose "Copy Link Location" to copy it to the Windows clipboard. Then hit CTRL+V to paste it. Saves you having to type the whole thing.
'''To reset your home page, do the following'''.<br><br>
    * Go to the site you want to set as your homepage.<br><br>
    * Click the Firefox button, go to '''Options '''| '''Options '''| '''General'''.<br><br>
    * Make sure it says "''Show My Homepage''" in the first dropdown menu.<br><br>
    * Click the button called "'''Use Current Pages'''" to set the homepage to the one you have on the screen.<br><br>
If this suggestion resolves the problem for you, please click the '''Solved it''' button next to this post after you log in into the forum. This will help others searching for a solution to the same problem.

  • Screen black out but can still be rung

Im in a location that has the most basic of network, when i am here my phone seems to play up. it does not register that there is an incoming call despite it ringing on the other end, and today the screen totally blacked out. anyone else's doing the same?

  • IMac late 2009, screen blacks out running Yosemite 10.10.2

My iMac's screen blacks out for no apparent reason, and the computer is still running normally. But I can't see it.
I thought temperatures were to blame, resetted fans with Macs fan control to speeds, where everything is nice and cool, the problem persists.
The screen might black out, for no apparent reason while working, or when idle. Trying to restart manually, it might black out while in the login screen, or even the apple logo. Or it might even restart normally and work for 8 hours. I have been trying to leave login items out, even Macs fan control an iStats, and the problem remains.
If I clear PRAM while rebooting, I might get a new lease of working life, but not persistently.
The problem started around two months AFTER I installed yosemite and with no new programs installed at the time.
    Please Help.

  • Computer doesn't load page correctly and freezes up since installing Yosemite.

Pages don't load correctly and computer freezes up ever since installing Yosemite. Help!!

Please answer as many of the following questions as you can. You may already have answered some of them; in that case, there's no need to repeat the answers.
Restart the router and the broadband device, if they're separate. Any change?
Run Software Update and install all available updates for OS X or the computer's firmware. Any change?
Are you connected to Ethernet as well as Wi-Fi? If so, disconnect the Ethernet cable or adapter and test.
If possible, connect to the router with an Ethernet cable and turn off Wi-Fi. Any difference?
Are any other devices on the network, and if so, are they the same?
If you can connect to more than one network, are they all the same?
Are all network applications affected, or only some? If only some, which ones?
Is networking always the same, or is the problem intermittent?
Disconnect all other devices from the network. Any change?
If you're running a MacBook with the lid closed, open the lid. Any difference?
Start up in safe mode and test. Any difference?
Start up in Recovery mode. From the OS X Utilities screen, select Get Help Online. A clean copy of Safari will launch. No plugins, such as Flash, will be available. Any difference?
If possible, turn off Bluetooth and disconnect any USB 3 devices. Any difference?

  • My screen blacks out and computer starts up again due to an error. Anyone any suggestions what could case this?

My screen blacks out and computer starts up again due to an error. Anyone any suggestions what could case this?

    Hello nattygrimm,
I was looking into the issue you are describing and found a great resource to try and fix the issue without having to re install the OS. It is an article called Mac OS X: How to troubleshoot a software issue found here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1199.
    I recommend starting here:
The first and easiest test to try is to see if the issue affects a different user account on your Mac. Each user account has customized preferences and other items stored in its home directory. You'll first need to create an additional user if one does not already exist (follow steps a-h below). Then, log out of the current user and test the issue in the new user account.
If this resolves the issue, there may be an issue with a file in the home directory of the original user account.
From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.
From the View menu, choose Accounts (or choose Users if using Mac OS X v10.2 or earlier).
Click "+" (or click New User if using Mac OS X v10.2 or earlier).
Give the new user a name and short name.
Mac OS X v10.3 or earlier only: Click the Password tab, and give the user a password.
Mac OS X v10.3 or earlier only: Click Security.
Select the checkbox for "Allow user to administer this computer". This makes the user account an administrator.
Click OK, or quit System Preferences.
Work your way down the article as needed.
    All the best,
    Sterling

  • Screen blacks out after latest itunes update installed

last year after installing an update for itunes my screen blacked out. it then intermittently worked for a few days before failing permanently. this was later fixed by replacing the inverter board. i didn't suspect the two events were linked. however, yesterday i got the latest update for itunes and again a few minutes after installation my screen blacked out! deja vu... it seems unlikely but is it possible the screen fault is caused by updating itunes?
this morning the screen is working again and i have run system restore to undo the installation. fine, but when i try to open itunes it starts installing again.
AJP 5600D laptop PC   Windows XP

Thats odd. Not sure what this error means, but you could always try repairing disk permissions, that seems to solve most of the random errors that occasionally pop up on my OS X macs. Load the OS X install dvd into the drive then restart your machine holding the C key. choose english as the main language. Then go into the utilities menu and select disk utility. Click on your hard disk then click the repair permissions button. Once completed, restart the computer into OS X. Then try your screensaver again. If this doesnt work, post again and I'll take a closer look at it.

  • Since installing Yosemite, I have no sound.

Since Installing Yosemite, I have No sound. There is no sound if I use headphones either.

There are many possible causes for this issue. Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Some may not apply to your model. Back up all data before making any changes.
    1. Start with the steps recommended in this support article. Don't skip any of the steps. It's the starting point for further efforts to solve the problem.
    2. Make sure you have a fully up-to-date installation of OS X.
    3. If you've installed an application called "Memory Clean" or any other third-party software that is supposed to "clean" or "purge" memory automatically, remove it according to the developer's instructions and restart. You should do that even if the software is not causing the problem, because it's useless.
    4. Other third-party software that has been reported to interfere with sound output includes "Boom" and "Samsung Kies." If applicable, uninstall according to the developer's instructions (not by dragging something to the Trash.)
    5. If an AirPlay device is selected for sound output from iTunes (or from other applications via third-party software such as "Airfoil"), deselect it.
    6. Launch the application "Audio MIDI Setup" by entering the first few letters of its name in a Spotlight search and selecting it in the results (it should be at the top.) Select Built-in Output from the list on the left. If the Mute boxes are checked, uncheck them.
    7. If a red light is visible in the audio-out port when sound should be playing, the internal switch is stuck in the position for digital output. You may be able to free it by inserting and removing a mini-stereo jack of the proper size. Inserting any kind of tool in the port may cause damage that won't be covered by the warranty.
If there's no red light, the switch may still be stuck in the headphone position. Try to free it the same way.
    8. Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard and mouse, if applicable. If more than one display is connected, disconnect all extra ones. Restart and test.
    9. If you have a MacBook Air, turn off Bluetooth and restart.
    10. Start up in safe mode. Don't log in; just restart as usual when the login screen appears. When you do, make sure the words "Safe Boot" do not appear in the login screen. If they do, the system is still in safe mode and sound won't work.
    11. Reset the NVRAM.
    12. Reset the SMC.
    13. Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/Preferences/Audio
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password. Restart the computer and empty the Trash. Recreate your settings in the Sound preference pane.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
    14. Reinstall OS X after backing up all data.
    15. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store.

  • Random laptop screen Black out / Turn off .

     Hi,
first of all my laptop is : HP Pavilion dv6-6160se Entertainment Notebook
    to the problem now
A few days ago my laptops screen started  out of a sudden shutting down/turning black( no lights at all ). This was happening while using the laptop at random. The screen  had no lights, and if i use a flashlight on it there is nothing. like its turned off completelly.
Before this happens. Ths behavior varies. Sometimes it flickers from my desktop to a black screen then back on and some times not. Most of the times screen changed to a radom color (green mostly) then becomes black/shuts down.
NOTE: The laptop keeps runing, i can hear the videos playing so it probably isnt a gpu chip or gpu issue , music and games.
I searched the web for all kind of reasons that this could happen and tried some of the fixes .
Here are everything i tried and all or the details i could accumulate in past coupe of days:
    1. If the screen flickers , blacks out and then turns back on i get a message that gpu drivers have stopped working and recovered (  on both amd and intel ).
    2. If the screen blacks out, on rare ocasions if you close the laptop lid and let the laptop go to sleep , when waking up screen works again ( noticable due to screen moving)
    3. I tried installing 4 different drivers all with clear install. ( didn't work)
    4. I tried to  to recover system with restore point. ( didn't work)
    5. I tried to lower the screen brightness. ( didn't work)
    6. tried this trick:
    Turn off laptop
    Remove battery
Hold the power buttong for 30-45 seconds
Plug-in the charger ( dont put the battery in )
Turn on laptop and see if it works.
    Very Noticable details:
    7.  Since  on of the rare fixes requires to move the lid  i tried shaking the screen a bit or pushing it slightly to different directions. This actually  does the trick and turns the screen back on ( i am right now typing  this after using this "trick"
So, with this one as a hint there are a couple of stuff i have in mind but i am not sure  and need help since i am not a technician.
    a) There is a loose LCD cable and when i type a little vibration moves it and ends up in a black screen.
    b) I read that if you use a flashlight and you cant see  your desktop it means its a bad inverter.
    c) Can the inverter have a lose cabe instead of the lcd ?
That's all the feedback i could give you that i can recall now.
Currecntly the screen looks ok ( maybe its the certain angle it has after i moved it  so i would aprecciate a fast reply before  it goes black again
EDIT: Tried to play a game for a few mins and i got the black screen again. Closed the lid  so the laptop goes in sleep mode then opened it and it worked. Just for the records.
EDIT#2: Just tried to play a game again. got the blackscreen, shaked the screen a bit and it worked but for the 1st time i get the message " Application has been blocked from accessing graphics hardware" , Can it be that its the GPU after all or maybe drivers?
EDIT#3: Tried to play a game again and it seem to trigger the issue . ( i am currently running the laptop with only the intel drivers installed)
    thanks in advance

    Hi @Ntas
I have read through your post and it seems there are a couple of possibilities, and I noted that you have already tried several of the things I would normally suggest.
I will however post some of those links anyway for you to review, it is always possible there may be something in one of them that may have been missed or may inspire an idea of the cause. Since you mentioned that sometimes just moving the screen will cause the problem or make it disappear, that does seem like either a loose connection or maybe something like pressure on a part of the display causing the issue.  Of course that last part may just mean the display is on its last legs, but hopefully not.
First I will give you a link to the service manual, to help you check the connections. Just be careful to read the sections on precautions, to protect yourself and to prevent any other damage. This manual is also useful in that it lists all the compatible parts, so if the display is defective you could use this guide to help order a compatible replacement if you choose to do so. Since installing Yosemite my Quarkxpress 10 is not running correctly. Too slow or crashes. How do I uninstall Os X Yosemite without losing all of my designs?

    Thank you Thomas
First, for changing my question to the right forum. I am new on this and wasn't aware I was in the wrong forum.
Secondly, even though my initial question is not answered as in: I just want to remove Classic, what you say is right. I think now, after writing my long question and seeing your answers, that I should start from scratch.
To answer your question, I bought the new drive to be able to store and back up into DVDs and CDs all the photographs and movies that are still in the computer. I also need to make CDs of my portfolio since I am trying to find a new job and buying a new Mac at this point is out of the question. To upgrade the computer: I just do not have use for OS 9 anymore; I cannot upgrade to the latest Java, Safari or have issues with Flash or other programs; the programs that I have and need will still run perfectly fine or better in Leopard. And even if I could buy another computer I would still like to hang onto this computer for a while.

  • MAIL FREEZING SINCE INSTALLING YOSEMITE ON MACBOOK PRO 2011

Problems with mail program freezing since installing Yosemite on MacBook Pro 2011

When Mail freezes, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • MacBook Pro crashes all the time since installing Yosemite

My MacBook pro has become almost unusable since I installed Yosemite.  I have a mid-2010 model MacBook Pro.  It spontaneously shuts off and reboots itself very frequently-- so frequently I can't get anything done.  It doesn't seem to matter what I am doing or which applications I am running.  I ran TechTool Pro and it repaired some files and permissions.   However, it's still spontaneously shutting off and rebooting just like before.   I'm starting to wonder if my machine is on its way out.  Can anyone help?

Thank you for responding!   I ran Etrecheck and here's the report:

  • 14" iBook screen blacks out

This is the third time it's done it today and the 5th time ever. My AppleCare ran out the middle of March, so I guess they are right on in determining when it's time to get a new computer.
When it blacks out, it just goes immediately, no flickering, no warning whatsoever. I can still see the desktop underneath the black and I can still move the cursor. I don't know anything what the insides are like, but the apple light on the top of the case goes out when the screen blacks out.
When I closed the top and opened it again, it brought the screen back up right away. But this last time, it took a few closing and openings to get it to come back up, making me think it's going to get worse.
Last week was the first time it ever went black. I initially thought it was falling in to sleep mode and held down the power key to get it to reboot. I'm pretty sure sleep has nothing to do with it, but I set my display to not go to sleep at all today to find out. It's blacked out twice since.
I don't use a screen saver, it's happened on battery and power adapter. Other people have mentioned the fan not running, I can't remember ever hearing my fan run or else it's just so quiet I can't tell the difference between it and the hard drive.
My iBook is a late 2004 model 14" 1.33 and, I just upgraded to Tiger (coincidence?) There have been no other problems to speak of other than the keyboard losing letters, battery needing to be replaced and the usual airport glitches. It hasn't been dropped or spilled on. Any suggestions on how to fix this and what I might be looking at when/if taking apart the screen?

It sounds like you might have a bad inverter cable, especially since it is affected by the position of the display. I think this is just a mechanical failure of the cable caused by many openings and closings of the display.
You might check out the troubleshooting section of the ifixit site and read about the inverter cable and see if it sounds like what is happening to you. I gather it is a real job to replace it. Ifixit and Powerbookmedic would be two good resources:
    http://www.ifixit.com/
    http://www.powerbookmedic.com/
Since the job is considered very difficult, I'm not sure there are any instructions on how to do this on these sites. But there is another manual that might be helpful:
    http://node123.cit.geneseo.edu/~stratton/ServiceManuals/
This is just the index. You will have to find the one for your iBook. Powerbookmedic also has a good manual.
It may also be possible to repair the cable, but I don't know. Spudnuty is the real expert here, and hopefully he will see this and be able to offer you more specific advice.
    Good luck!
