Since Snow Leopard upgrade, Time Machine broken on both laptops

Concentrating of the "first" laptop, the Dashboard log widget shows:
Starting standard backup
Attempting to mount network destination using URL: afp://***@10.0.1.1:548/Time%20Machine%20A
NetAuthConnectToServerSync failed with error: 80 for url: afp://***@10.0.1.1:548/Time%20Machine%20A
Backup failed with error: 19

In addition to Kappy's list, try turning TM off, then renaming your Computer (System Preferences > Sharing). Keep it short, use only letters and numbers (omit spaces and punctuation). Then click the Edit button and make the corresponding change to your +Local Hostname.+
Make similar changes to your Airport and Network names via Airport Utility (and I'd not recommend calling your AEBS a Time Capsule, just to reduce future confusion by others reading your logs).
Connect the external drive directly to your Mac. When it appears in the Finder sidebar, right-click it and change it's name similarly as well.
This makes no sense, but often works anyway.
It doesn't look like your backups are corrupted, or it's not getting far enough to send that sort of message, but it's possible. So, while the disk is connected directly, run a +*Repair Disk+* (not permissions) on it anyway.
Then turn TM back on and select the (new) TM name. You may have to open it via the FInder to get it to appear in the selection list.
It must be noted that doing backups this way is not officially supported:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1733
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2038
but many of us (including me) are doing it anyway.

  • Snow leopard and time machine

Hi, I'm using an iMac 21.5" middle 2010 with Mac OS X snow leopard and Time machine on a Time Capsule with 2 GB.
Since yesterday the control light is permanantly flashing yellow, but nevertheless time machine is working an signed a complete bachup, last 2 hrs before.
I'm not sure, if all is correct. Can anybody help?
    Many thanks
    scharamer

It may just be telling you about the latest firmware update.
Start AirPort Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder).
    Click Manual Setup
Click directly on the word Status (2nd line) and AirPort Utility will indicate what's wrong.
If your network seems to be working OK, the flashing light might indicate that an update for your AirPort device is now available.

  • Problems w/MS Office 2008 & Google Earth Ever Since Snow Leopard "Upgrade"

I probably should have checked this forum before taking my son's advice to upgrade from 10.5 to 10.6. Ever since this upgrade, I've had repeated and frustrating problems with two applications: MS Office 2008 for the Mac and Google Earth for the Mac.
Note that I did an "in-place" upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard, i.e., I inserted the installation DVD into my iMac and then double-clicked on "Install Mac OS X".
Office 2008: Ever since the Snow Leopard upgrade, MS Office 2008 has been crashing. Typically, it's Entourage crashing when a crash does occur because that's the office app that I run 95% of the time. However, whenever Entourage crashes and I try to launch Word, Excel, or PowerPoint, they won't launch either... The icons will bounce a few times in the dock but won't run. (The Entourage crash is the only Office App that actually generates a crash window.) Note that there are two identities configured on my iMac, both of which which use Entourage. The key thing about this situation is that when the Office 2008 crash does occur, restarting the iMac ALWAYS resolves the problem until the next time a crash occurs. I've tried to determine what combination of events, i.e., apps open/being used in either/both identities, etc. is the trigger, but I can't find anything obvious. Sometimes I can use the iMac for a whole day without a crash, but that's unusual. If Entourage is left open in both identities, maybe a couple of days will pass without a crash, but invariably it happens again, and then it's reboot time again. In cases where Entourage is left running (in one or both identities), we will still eventually get a crash in one of them if one of us tries to open a WinWord attachment (with a "Not enough memory to run Word" error). If at that point I close Entourage and try to restart it, it crashes. I've tried everything I could find on the Office for the Mac forums, including deleting duplicate fonts, doing a safe start-up, fixing disk permissions via Disk Utility, zapping the PRAM, turning filing sharing off then on (including deleting everything listed in the Shared Folders section), logging out/logging back in, etc., all to no avail. One of the Office 2008 for the Mac forum contributors suggested that the problem was with my Snow Leopard Install, but then a contributor to another more general Apple forum blames Office for Mac. (This is exactly the sort of finger-pointing exercise that I'd hoped to avoid when I made the plunge from being a long-time Windows user to becoming an OS X user...; - )
Google Earth: This just flat-out WILL NOT RUN ever since I upgraded to Snow Leopard. When I try to run it, it bounces in the dock for about a minute then just stops, staying fixed to the dock until I do a Force-Quit. (I don't have it permanently tethered to the dock since I only use it occasionally.) I've tried deleting/reinstalling, including Google Earth's suggestions to remove files from my identity's Google Earth folder in the Library folder, but no dice.
My take on all of this is that despite all of Apple's advertising to the contrary, their OS (including updates to their OS) isn't necessarily as trouble-free/stable as their anti-Windows spots would have you believe. Sorry for this long post, but any help would be much appreciated.

I left my system running all day in 64-bit kernel mode. (I left Entourage running the whole time.) Just now closed Entourage and tried reopening it. Same deal with Google Earth. They both crashed. Here's a screen paste of the entire Microsoft crash log for Entourage:

  • IPhoto won't open since Snow Leopard upgrade

    Hi,
Since upgrading to snow leopard iPhoto won't open, it just crashes instantly. I ahve tried reinstalling with no luck.
    Can anybody help with this?
    Thanks in advance,
    Dan.

i just bought a new MBP 13'' 2.53 Ghz 4Gb Ram 250GB HD... i tried moving my iPhoto library from my powerbook g4 1.67 machine that was running 10.4.11 (via a Lacie external)
once i moved this and opened iPhoto (on my new MBp running 10.6.1 - SNOW LEOPARD) it instantly asks me to upgrade the library (saying that the old library needs upgrading for this version), so i click upgrade, and then 2 seconds later it says that the library is corrupt and damaged and i must install from a back up...
I deleted iPhoto then emptied trash after clearing up some space on the external, meaning i lost iPhoto applicaton - IDIOT I KNOW - so i download iPhoto 8.1 and the library upgrade and error / damaged library message appeared again...
I have now, (as i type this right now) re-installed snow leopard from the snow leopard disk that came in the MBP box (i have had it like 2 weeks, thats it, it shipped with leopard and i am having to install SNOW LEOPARD, for the 2nd time) to get iPhoto back)... will this give me iPhoto back, or do i have to re-install from the LEOPARD OS disks that were sent in the MBP box, the OS that it shipped with?
i am very annoyed that it seems that my iPhoto library from a 3.75year old machine cant be on my new machine unless i re-add each PBG4Tiger10.4.11 individual library folder thru the interface of iPhoto on my new machine... (if indeed it will ever open)...
    PLEASE HELP !

  • How to downgrade from Mountain Lion back to snow leopard with Time Machine

The final straw was the horrible mouse sideways page wiggle while trying to scroll down and read safari pages. Even after turning the feature off, tech support said it will still wiggle a little. That and the HORRIBLE grey icons everywhere was enough to send me back to my beloved iMac I loved when I bought it. I'll give up the iMessage and the few new items ML gave me. But as many others said, what I got new was far less than what was taken away.
So what tech support had me do was this. Even though the apple engineers said it would not work, apple tech support had me try it and it worked for me so good luck. Engineers said that after you install mountain Lion, it messes with ALL your time machine back ups and won't revert back to snow leopard even if you select a snow leopard date back in time.  That didn't happen to me.  I have a 2010 27 inch iMac
This worked for me but PROCEED AT YOU OWN RISK
Export individually any email folders or photos or data you will lose between now and the date you are reverting back to.
    1. Insert Snow Leopard DVD that came with computer. The install disk not the applications. Make sure time machine external drive IS connected.
    2. Restart computer and when you hear The Mac chime, hold down the C key and then it will take several minutes to boot up from the DVD.
    3. Select the little blue triangle to continue in English.
    4. When it gets to the screen that says "continue" stop. There might be a screen or two before this one I can't remember but either way stop at the word continue.
    5. Go up to the top left and find the UTILITIES pull down menu and select disk utility.
    6. In the window that opens up, Select the Apple drive which should be the very top one in the window.
    7. Select erase.. it should be Mac OS extended journaled
8 select erase and maybe a password. It only takes a few seconds
9 go back up to UTILITIES in upper left and then select restore from time machine or backup or whatever it says. It's the last choice.
    10. Select the external time machine drive and navigate to the date you last had Snow Leopard running and that will be the date it restores to. You will lose any data between now and then but you can export your mail, export photos, and other items separately. I only stayed on ML For a few days before hating it enough to go back so I had no loss of data except a few emails.
    11. Hit RESTORE. And then it will take several hours. When you restart it, it should come right back to that day you selected as if ML  was just a bad thought on someone's drawing board.   If for some reason it still comes up ML, Then they said to erase HD Again (steps 1-8) and then manually drags back USER folder or individual folders with Mail, photos etc.   if this way doesn't work, have another plan printed out so that you are not stuck by this one.
Good luck. Proceed at your own risk..

    The ultimate solution:
You need an USB of at least 5 GB and the Snow Leopard Install DVD.
    1. make a bootable USB with Disk Utility in it:
         a. download the Mountain Lion Installer from the App Store
         b. quit the installer after download
         c. find the installer in the Applications folder
         d. option+click in it and select "Show Pakage Contents"
         e. go to Contents>SharedSupport to find there the InstallESD.dmg file and mount it by double-clicking it
         f. with the Disk Utility, restore its contents into your USB
    2. boot from the USB:
         a. restart the computer and hold-down the option key while booting
         b. select the USB and boot
    3. run the Disk Utility and format in ONE partition the HD of your computer
REMEMBER: BACKUP YOUR HARD DISK BEFORE DOING ALL THESE, YOUR DISK WILL BE EREASED AND DATA BECOME UNRECOVERABLE OTHERWISE
    4. insert the Snow Leopard DVD and reboot from it
    5. follow the on-screen instructions to install OS X 10.6
After this, you can, if you will, upgrade to Lion or stay in Snow... Good Luck!!

  • ICal error since snow leopard upgrade

    Hi,
We are running Mac OS X Server v10.6 Snow Leopard. I have all of our service up and running except for one. The issue is with iCal Server.
We did an OS upgrade - keeping our previous settings etc. Most of this worked great but iCal Server is not accessible.
In Server Admin the service seems all set and running but on the web page and on our client machines the calendars we have been using before the upgrade are now not available.
Using Safari and going to the web calendar I gat a message "Unable to access calendar, because the calendar server is not running."
In iCal on a client it just shows a offline icon beside the group's(account) shared calendar.
I have looked a several settings and read through the 10.6 iCal Server Admin PDF from apple. I am sure I jst am missing a configuration somewhere.
    Any help/advise/insight would be awesome!
    Thanks

Thanks for the response. I did a very similar task to fix the issue. Basically our company calendar had only a few future events input so I deleted all the old ics files etc and restarted ical server. I can now access the calendars(users and groups) via the webcalendar on the wiki.
I can also sync user calendars with iCal using- http://serveraddress:8008/principals/users/username/
However I cannot sync the group calendar using- http://serveraddress:8008/principals/groups/groupname/
This worked in 10.5 but is not working since the 10.6 upgrade.
Perhaps I need to find a new path to access this calendar. Any thoughts on where is calendar home is located?
    Thanks

  • Downgrade to Snow Leopard with Time Machine - and then, what?

So I am making Time Machine backups on a regular basis. Almost daily.
The last one when I was running Snow Leopard, dates back from December 25th, 2011.
I have done a lot of reading and googling before making the leap back to that happy Christmas day, which I am about to do now. I have learned that I can easily re-install my iMac using that TM backup.
But - what happens to all the documents I have created and modified after that day? Do I have to select them one by one to restore them? Must be hundreds of them. Or is there an option to put back all the documents on my HD at  the same time?
I realize that I can make another backup today using Carbon Copy Cloner which I can use to do so. Only, I don't have another external HD to make that CCC-backup.
And what happens to the applications I have installed running Lion?
So, perhaps it would be the best to erase my TM external HD, turn it into a bootable CCC HD which contains everything I have currently installed on my iMac , and restart / re-initialize the system using my SL install DVD…
Please give me some advice. I do want to downgrade, but I am scared to lose anything on the way…

Just did the downgrade, but Migration Assistant don't let you rescue any kind of information from the Time Machine backup. It just tells you to upgrade your system. I'm feelling like trying to downgrade my iPhone 3G from iOS 4 to 3. Impossible. Pretty f***** up...

  • What external hard drives are compatible w/ lion, snow leopard and time machine?

I am looking to buy an external hard drive to back up all data on my Macbook Pro that is currently running Snow Leopard, then upgrading to Lion.  I want an external hard drive that is compatible with BOTH Snow Leopard (for use of creating a backup prior to my upgrade) and Lion (for daily use once I've upgraded). I also don't want to spend more than $100 if possible. Any suggestions?  Thanks!

There is currently a shortage of drives due to flooding in one of the countries in which they are manufactured.
Getting one for under $100 at this point might be difficult. You didn't mention how full your current hard drive is, but for Time Machine, you should plan on two to three times the data you currently have (or expect to have).
I looked through Newegg's selection and didn't see more than a couple 1TB drives for less than $100. I recently bought a 3TB drive for $150. They're in the $200-$300 range, now.
I always buy bare drives and put them in an enclosure I buy separately. All the name-brand, ready-to-use drives come with a bunch of software you don't need and some of their software causes problems.
I had some bad luck/bad customer service with Seagate, so I've been buying Western Digital. Though, my replacement drives from Seagate have been going fine.
I've used Icy Dock and MacAlly enclosures. Both have worked well. If you do decide to go that route, you must make sure the enclosure can support the size of drive you buy (both physical--2.5" or 3.5", and storage size--1TB, 2TB, 3TB). The controllers in the cases may not be able to handle a 3TB drive, for example.
No matter how you go, you have to decide what kind of interface you want to use. USB is cheaper, but Firewire is faster. Firewire 800 is even faster, but costs more. All of that depends on what ports you have on the computer. OS X doesn't currently support USB 3.

  • External HDD Issues with Snow Leopard and Time Machine

    Hello,
I have a 1TB WD 10EADS External HDD, and it had some files on it. I connected it the other day to an iMac I recently upgraded to 10.6, and wanted to do a complete time machine backup of the computer to it (250GB HDD). I copied the files off the external HDD I needed and then Time Machine needed to format it as it was a FAT32 drive. This went successfully, and I started the Time Machine backup. This went quite slowly and failed after ~2.5GB or so. I restarted and tried again to no avail upon which Time Machine told me I should reformat it in Disk Utility. So I did, and to no avail.
I tried this a number of times and sometimes when doing a reformat I was told that the drive could not be unmounted. I tried manually copying files to the disk which started to work but then failed promptly with error (-36) and the message "The Finder can't complete the operation because some data in “ [Program/File Name]” can't be read or written." I upgraded to 10.6.1 also to no avail. I even repaired permissions and the disk, and booted Disk Utility from the Snow Leopard disc and formatted that to no avail.
I have read this is an I/O error and can be associated with bad drives, but as I stated before, the drive worked perfectly until Time Machine formatted it. I took the HDD to another Mac running 10.6, and it told me it had a POSIX error. I did some googling and found that if I format it under a Windows machine, and then reformat under the mac it might work.
What I want to know is, is this a 10.6 error or has the HDD decided to go kaput after Time Machine formatting it?
    Thanks for your help

    Thomas Huxley wrote:
Time Machine backup failed. I think it's a glitch with the computer, not the HDD. Going to zero out the drive now.
Any other suggestions on how I might bypass this error to get data onto the Disk eg. transfer over to another computer, so I can reformat the computer and install Snow Leopard from scratch? The whole purpose of doing this time Machine backup was to get all the files off the computer to perform a clean install of Snow Leopard.
I assume you're positive the TM disk has both the correct *Partition Map Scheme* (GUID) and Format (Mac OS Extended (journaled), but not case-sensitive)? One of them being wrong is the most common cause of a first TM backup failing.
Did you do either a +*Verify Disk+* (not permissions) or a +*Repair Disk+* (not permissions) on your internal HD, or only your TM drive? The message you got could be a result of a problem on either one.
Other options are to make a "bootable clone" via CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper. CCC is donationware, SD has a free version that will do it. If you do that, boot from it, and be sure everything works before erasing your internal HD. Google them.
Note that there are many, many reports of problems here with WD drives, and that some of them are not bootable.
I would not upgrade without backups (Murphy was an optimist!), but is there a reason you want to erase your HD? It's not required, and rarely does any good. The normal install will simply install Snow Leopard and remove Leopard. Your apps, data, etc., won't be touched.

  • Lower DVD drive won't open/close since Snow Leopard upgrade

    Hello,
I have 2 optical drives in my Mac Pro: 1 Superdrive in the upper slot and 1 DVD-ROM drive in the lower slot (a HITACHI DVD-ROM GD-7000 which came with my old Dual G4 450).
Since upgrading to Snow Leopard, I can't use the lower drive anymore, it won't open or close (I used the alt-eject keys, nothing happens). The drive also is not listed in the eject-menu in the menue bar, but it appears in system profiler as:
    HITACHI DVD-ROM GD-7000:
    Modell: HITACHI DVD-ROM GD-7000
    Version: 016J
    Seriennummer:
    Absteckbares Laufwerk: Nein
    Protokoll: ATAPI
    Einheiten-Nummer: 1
    Socket-Typ: Intern
    Low-Power-Polling: Nein
    Ausschalten: Nein
Anybody any ideas what I can do to get that 2nd drive to work again?
    Thanks in advance,
    Peter

Today I had a little time do do some testing:
The tip with the SMC RESET button didn't help.
Zapping the PRAM/NVRAM didn't help either.
The jumpers were on "cable select" on both drives, I tried to set one as "master" and the other one as "slave". Problem still exists.
I changed the position of the drives to check if the cable is ok. Still the same.
I unplugged the other (working) drive and had just the one plugged in. It shows up in system profiler but not in the drives menue nor in the disk utility application.
I booted from my 10.5 installation DVD and tried the disk utility from there. It's not on the list.
    Any other ideas?
    Peter

  • Snow Leopard and Time Machine question

Running on snow leopard, trying back up files in order to upgrade OS using an external hard drive and time machine. Previously said "don't use" on accident with this hard drive; any way to reverse this?

    Hello cinstar,

  • Ipod charging problem since Snow Leopard upgrade..

    Hi,
I usually charge my ipod through the keyboard usb port on my aluminium imac, but since i upgraded to Snow Leopard the ipod is now flattened ??
The ipod shows the charging ipod and functions correctly in itunes, its just flat if left connected overnight..
Anyone else having this problem ?

Those keyboards are notoriously underpowered. Does it charge correctly if you plug it directly into the Mac?
Is the machine set to sleep?

  • Epson CX6600 - No Scanner since Snow Leopard upgrade

Since I upgraded to SL on my 2.4 iMac 24" I have not been able to access the scanner. In all programmes it initially shows in the list, but then says either 'no scanner detected' or 'scanner disconnected'.
All other functions of the machine work including colour copying, so the hardware must function at least!
Is is just too old for the software. I have downloaded the 'latest' drivers via Epson and through the Apple site, but nothing seems to work.

Disconnect the router from it's power source, shut down your MacBookPro. Wait about 5 mins, reconnect the router, reboot your MBP. See if that makes a difference.

  • How to revert to Snow Leopard from time machine on Yosemite Device.

    Hello everybody,
Essentially I need to revert back to OS Snow leopard on my new macbook that has Yosemite installed (bought secondhand) as a few of my DJ programs (Rekordbox) are not co-operating with the new OS. I have the back up on a hard drive made with Time Machine, is there any way I can do this?
My old Macbook pro is still working, its just the backlight has gone out, so I have to use a torch on the back to see what I'm doing. Everything still functions correctly on my old device, and I can use the carbon clone copy if need be. Really just need my old laptop's os/files on this new device with Yosemite on it.
    Thanks in advance.

Do a backup, preferably 2 seperate ones.
Revert to a Previous OS X
    Revert to Snow Leopard
If you do revert, I'd use Setup Assistant to restore your data. This process takes a while, so do it when you won't need the computer for several hours, based on my experience.

  • Can't drag and drop MP3 files into GB since Snow Leopard upgrade

Not sure if this is a known issue but ever since I have upgraded to Snow Leopard (10.6), I have only been able to import (drag & drop) some MP3's into a podcast project. For example, some files I was able to import before, no longer can be dragged and dropped to create a new track.
I've tried creating a new podcast project but thats not working either. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

I just read another from another website - http://www.bulletsandbones.com/GB/FAQPages/OddBallProbs.html
that if you choose delete the prefernce files .plist/.cs and use "SAVE AS" vs "SAVE" the files I referred to above get saved when attempting to open th project again. I tried it and it seems to work for me now. I hope this helps others with the GB *"File Not Found"* dilemma in Leopard and Garageband V5.1
