Since the MAC Mini has a slot for CD insertion I cannot visually tell if

Since this MAC Mini has a slot for inserting CDs how can I tell if it will accept and read video dics that are routinely 3 1/2 inches in diameter? These are discs used in MINI DVD camcorders.

You cannot use the mini CDs in your Mini. If you try to do so, you can do serious damage to the mechanism -- and they won't work, regardless.
If you need to use odd-shaped or smaller CDs, an external firewire tray-loading drive would be a solution.

  • Flashing folder icon after Mac mini has been sitting for a few hours

I leave my Mac mini running at time when I leave the office to let it install an update or just cause I forget to close it all down. When I come in the next morning, I have a flashing folder icon waiting for me.
Every single post on the forums talk about this issue at startup. This isn't the case for me; It didn't get shut down. A simple reboot solves it but still an annoying occurrence.

  • Mac Mini gets wifi connection for 3 seconds, then drops it.

    Hey all,
Long time listener, first time caller.
I'm running a 1.66 Mac Mini with 10.5.4 on it. My wifi network is based on a Comcast broadband connection and is broadcast through an 802.11g Airport Express. Also on the network are: a Macbook (3,1), my iBook G4 (1.33 ghz), my original iPhone, my Tivo, an HP desktop using an 802.11g wireless adapter and occasionally a Wii. All of these have great wifi connections, run fast and connect easily. The wifi is normally WEP ASCII 128 bit encrypted.
The Mac Mini, however, does not. The Mac Mini has been in several positions near my TV (This is what it uses as a monitor), but in most of these has had an extremely hard time finding the wifi network. This got a bit better after I removed all of it's locations, keychains and such and re-set-up everything. Except it still, whenever it connects, drops the web connection within about 10 seconds on an extremely good day. I'll select my network from the Airport drop down menu, it'll join happily, I'll click a bookmark and the page will load very slowly, get about halfway and then stop. Sometimes it'll just go straight to "You are not connected to the internet. (Network Diagnostics)" When I click network diagnostics, either Airport Settings or ISP has failed, but when I go through the process of trying to repair/diagnose the problem, suddenly they will all be working fine.
For what it's worth, I took it to the Genius Bar, and it worked amazingly well on the Apple Store Wifi.
    Any thoughts?

I was having an identical issue with my Mini, and I have an eerily similar mix of devices on my network. Last night I went into my Airport Express configuration and changed the channel that it is broadcasting on (also turned on Interference Robustness) and everything is now working great. By default, my Airport channel was broadcasting on channel 1 - I changed it manually to channel 7, restarted the Airport and that did the trick. All of my macs (including the Mini), tivos and wii are now getting a stronger wireless signal since I changed the channel.

  • Mac Mini - has anyone figured out how to increase video RAM?

More and more websites are offering live feeds, particularly Indycars and CART, but the Mac Mini is functionally useless for this application offering only "Stop motion", which is great for Laurel and Hardy or Buster Keaton, but not quite the thing for a rapidly moving sport.
Has a hyper-intelligent mega being out there in Apple-land worked out a software patch to expand the memory capacity of the Graphics Card into normal RAM? After all the standard 64k is listed as "shared" memory, so could it be coaxed to grab a larger slice of the RAM cake?

I belive this would be in the same vein of folks who want to manually control the use of Virtual Memory in Mac OS X. In six years, no one's been able to engineer that feat.
My suggestion would be to buy a Mac that already meets your minimum requirements for your software.

  • Waking Mac Mini has a Network Name Clash

    Hi,
I have a new Mac Mini running lion, connected to a Time Capsule.  The mac mini has a unique name on the network.
Each time, the mini wakes from sleep, a message is displayed saying the name is already in use and adds a (2) to the name.
This appears to only happen in Lion.
    Any ideas to resolve ?
    Thanks,
    Ben

Same problem here, but with a 2007 iMac running Lion.  Never saw this problem on any previous Mac or version of Mac OS.  In fact, the first time this happened was just tonight, and I've been running Lion since it was a DP.

  • Does the Mac mini have optical audio in?

    Hello!
I have been looking at a lot of forums that say that the Mac mini has optical audio or "Toslink" out and in if you use this adaptor:
    http://www.amazon.com/Recoton-Fiber-Optic-Toslink-Adapter/dp/B0002MQGRM
I was wondering of this was true. I want to connect my Xbox to the Mac mini so I can monitor the audio coming from it because my display dosen't have speakers.
Please help me clear up the confusion.

All Mac Mini models from 2006 on had Optical audio input and output.

  • Running The Mac Mini Non-stop

Does anyone have experience or an opinion on running the Mac Mini continuously non-stop for long periods of time (e.g. months)? Let's assume that sleep mode is disabled.
How will this affect the reliability of the machine?
I do this to my PC and they seem fine. Just wondering if the Mac Mini will do okay.
Mac Mini Intel Core Duo 1.66GHz; 2 GB RAM; OS X 10.4.6

    A few quick items:
    1) I agree with all who posted. You should have no problem leaving the Mini on indefinitely.
    2) Go to your System Preferences and select the Energy Saving Option (It looks like a light bulb). Check off to turn the Hard Drive off when possible, Select Sleep, Never and set your monitor to power down when you want it to.
    3) If you have a broadband internet connection where it is always on, you want to make sure your firewall is up. Go to System Preferences, select Sharing and then select Firewall. Turn it on for your protection. You probably don't need it if you have a router, but just in case.
    Good luck!

  • Does the Mac Mini have an ethernet port?

I just wanted to know if the Mac Mini has an ethernet port on the back of it? I have internet with an ethernet port, and I wanted to know if it would work on the Mac Mini too??

The others are correct, the Mac mini, like all Macs in the past ten years or so, has an Ethernet port. You can check out all of the Mac mini's technical specifications here:

  • Does the Mac Mini have a camera?

Thinking about getting a Mac Mini because it is very affordable, and I hate my PC, does the Mac Mini have a camera for facetime?

I think cameras are in the displays.  The Mini is the "scrunched" version of the tower.

  • Why is my mac mini server apparently looking for wireless while I hold option at startup?

Besides the Lion recovery partition on my Mac Mini, I have 2 partitions:  One with Lion and one with Snow Leopard Server that I often boot from in order to test some things.  However, it takes FOREVER at the gray screen while I hold option, until the various startup disks appear.
There is a spinning wheel next to a popup menu button, and the wireless symbol.  The Mac Mini is apparently looking for wireless for some specified time, then finally gives up and says, "Ok, here are your disk partitions."  This is very annoying, and I would like to know what it is, and how to turn it off.  My Mini is plugged into Ethernet.

Are there any Mount points setup or listed in Login Items?
Might try a variation of this from older OSes...
This command adds a delay, in this case 45 seconds, before displaying the Login Window.
defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow StartupDelay -int 45
If the Login Window UI detects that the network servers are available when it starts, it will skip the delay, also if network servers become available before the delay expires, the Login Window UI cancels the delay and displays.

  • Osx lion: available space on my HD has increased significantly since the iCloud and recovery disc updates for Mac.

osx lion: available space on my HD has increased significantly (doubled!) since the iCloud and recovery disc updates for Mac. I am guessing OSX Lion now recalculates what is 'available' as I have not deleted anything major. I have two MacBook Air's (1 core 2 duo and 1 i5), both with 256 drives. I am also running win 7 on Parallels 7. Any thoughts?

you can't necessarily download the Mountain Lion installer via the App Store since it came already installed on your computer.
Not true. You can go to the Mac App Store and download the installer
(from the link that WALTER-MILANO-ITALY posted above)
Install OS X Lion or OS X Mountain Lion
If you completed your installation of OS X, your installer may have been removed after your successful first login to OS X Lion or OS X Mountain Lion.  Mac App Store's Purchases page should show Install OS X as being "Installed", and disallow its download, when viewed from a computer running OS X.
To redownload the installer on a computer running OS X Lion or OS X Mountain Lion, press and hold the Option key while you click the Purchases tab. If the button to the right of the Install OS X Lion or OS X Mountain Lion item doesn't change to "Install" and allow you to download OS X, use Spotlight to search for "Install OS X Lion or OS X Mountain Lion" on your computer.

  • The hard drive on my 2012 mac mini has broken.

Poor thing died 5 weeks after the warranty expired.  When I try to repair it in disk utility, I get the message "This drive has a hardware problem that can't be repaired.".  I cannot afford a repair at this time, but I had a 2.5 44.02 GBinch ssd from Other World Computing that I added, however; due to the hd issue I can't add start up or OS X Lion to it.  I also have a usb flash drive, 4 GB that I tried to enter another operating system (first Lion, then, since I couldn't find the program anywhere and the mac mini doesn't have a Virtual Disk Drive, it came with no operating disks, so I tried windows, with boot camp, partitioning, ect.). How do I load OS X Lion to my ssd until I can afford a repair.  It won't let me transfer hardly any of my data to a storage disk or my old (2007 mac mini).  I've also tried to program the ssd while conected with the old Leapord (I think) program to no avail.  Meanwhile, I'vealready lost all my bookmarks and other things are slowly slipping away.  Thank you for any assistance.

Will do Allan and thank you for the quick response.  I've been at this for 3 months now.
"This drive has a hardware problem that can't be repaired."
"Back up as much of the data as possible and replace the disk.  See an an authorized Apple dealer for more information."
As you can see, that's not a ton of info.  Under the disk listing on the left of the disk utility window, in bright red letters, it says 500.11 GB TOSHIBA MK 50.  I'm aware that the GB's of the ssd are far below the storage capacity of the main hd, however, I don't use it for a ton of stuff, or I wouldn't have gone for a mini again, but this time I added the 2 ram replacement storage upgrades, effectively doubling the ram that it came with.  In fact, only one of the the 2 ram expansions has even been used so far.  (You may be able to tell that I'm no Apple Genius.  Ironically, my brother is at a Buffalo, NY store, but he isn't familiar with the guts of the computers.)  Again, thank you Allan for your time.

  • My Mac Mini has a password and a wireless keyboard and mouse that have been working well with bluetooth until two days ago when my keyboard stopped responding. Since I have a password on Mac Mini, I am unable to access settings to pair Mac Mini. Thanks.

Can anyone help me pair my BT keyboard with my password protected Mac Mini? I am currently unable to log in to Mac Mini since the BT keyboard has become unpaired.  The wireless mouse is working.  I also have an I Pad and an I Phone as well as Mac TV.
    Please help!!
    Thank you.
    Gail

I had exactly the same issue, that the Apple wireless keyboard became unpaired, and I couldn't get past the password-protected log-in screen, because I didn't have a wired keyboard laying around.
    OK folks,
Discovered by trial and error that it was the wireless mouse (not an Apple brand) that was preventing the keyboard from pairing, even though it's not a bluetooth mouse...
    Here's the steps I used...
    1. Disconnected the USB  mouse cord from the Mac Mini.
    2. Turned off the Apple wireless keyboard from switch on the back.
    3. Turn Mac Mini off, then back on.
    4. Waited for it to boot up as far as  the password-protected screen.
    5. Turned on the Apple wireless keyboard, waited for it to stop blinking, indicating (hoping) that it paired        up.
    6. And voila... was able to then type in the password...
    7. Then plugged the non-Apple wireless mouse sensor  cord back into the Mac Mini's USB port
I also immediately went in to the MacMini's Sharing options and set that up for remote management in case something else happens down the road for other problems...
Thanks though to all who suggested solutions... they may come in handy in the future.
    Hope this helps someone else...

  • What's wrong with my trackpad? It was working fine, then I installed Lion 10.8.1 and now the mac mini won't see it, when I press the on button, a light comes on after a brief pause, stays on for a second or so, and then goes off, still no trackpad..

Ok, so if you haven't worked it out, this is my first post. My problem is all in the title, but once more won't hurt..
I have a bluetooth trackpad which has been attached to my mac mini for a few months now, with only the occasional connection lost, connection found saga that everyone seems to go through. Earlier today, I used the trackpad to upgrade to OSX 10.8.1 nd when the computer rebooted, no trackpad could be found. I've put fresh batteries in, I've tried rebooting the mac mini, I've checked sys preferences and am currently using an old usb keyboard which is v flimsy so forgive any typos please.
The light comes on about a second after the on button is pressed, (whether the button is held down or not) and then goes off after a second, still no trackpad is found..
    Why?!!!!

No, not paired to anything else, fresh out the box connected to the mac mini I bought at the same time, never been paired with anything else.
I think it's a hardware issue. As I don't seem to be able to get it to turn off.

Component is analogue with three connections. I think one for each color
