Since the plugin container update, firefox keeps freezing when opened and on certain sites.

(locking this old thread. If you have this issue then please create a new thread - c)
Not sure if its because of the plugin container update but issues began around that time. When I open firefox sometimes its frozen, all i can do is close it down and open a new window. it does not say "(not responding)" like when it crashes, i just cannot type, click bookmark or anything. in particular the site on http://forum.breakbeat.co.uk/, to post messages on there an new box opens, this also freezes in the same manner, only works again if firefox is reset, or sometimes begins to work again by itself, 10 minutes later or so....
PLEASE NOTE: this is not the usual form of crashing, or whatever the technical term is, it simply freezes, yet i can click the "x" in the corner and it instantly recognizes that. when a box opens in a site that crashes, i can still use other tabs/windows of firefox no problem, just not the site... the site is not experiencing issues, already asked them.
thanks

Same here. Win7 64bit, Firefox 3.6.6, Flash Player 10. It all started after the last Update, few weeks ago. Firefox is freezing when loading videos (ex:youtube) and can only be stopped by killing the process in the task manager. Firefox works normal thou after killing the firefox "plugin-container.exe". It would be nice if somebody from Mozilla would pay some attention to this issue.

• Is there any way to not use the plugin container for firefox?

Is there any way to not use the plugin container for firefox? Ever since I updated, my firefox browser has been crashing almost every day and it always says that the plugin container crashed, but the rest of firefox freezes up as well, so I am forced to end the process itself.

See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Plugin-container_and_out-of-process_plugins
You can set the prefs dom.ipc.plugins.enabled.* to false on the about:config page to disable the plugin-container process.
dom.ipc.plugins.enabled (currently false by default in Firefox 3.6.6)
dom.ipc.plugins.enabled.npswf32.dll (Flash)
dom.ipc.plugins.enabled.npctrl.dll (Silverlight)
dom.ipc.plugins.enabled.npqtplugin.dll (QuickTime)

• Since updating firefox keeps freezing on me, how can I revert to old version?

ever since I updated to 3.6.10 firefox keeps freezing on me. Various things will freeze like pop ups on my message board will cause a freeze, or drop down menus on a page will freeze, or just about anything. It's making me miserable so I'd really like to go back to the old version. Everything was fine then. How can I do that.

Same thing was happening to me. I believe it was version 3.6.12 that is causing these problems. I went to oldapps.com and downloaded Firefox 3.5 and it got rid of the problem.

• Since the last automatic update, Firefox has been running slow as molasses, with a refresh box coming up constantly. What can I do to correct this?

Since the last automatic update (approx. one week ago) my Firefox has been running slow as molasses and I keep getting a "refresh" box popping up when the pages get hung up (very often)
What can I do to correct this? I clean my cache out at least once daily - most days more. Virus scan says I'm clear of viruses - Glary Utilities tells me that all changes to my registry have been fixed (sneaky apps trying to get in) I'm going crazy because I am used to my FF being fast! HELP!!!

If you have problems with updating then best is to download the full version and uninstall the currently installed version.
Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
* Firefox 4.0.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
* Firefox 3.6.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html
* Uninstall your current Firefox version and remove the Firefox program folder before installing that copy of the Firefox installer.
* Do not remove personal data if you uninstall the current version.
Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere in the Firefox Profile Folder and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.

• Is it possible to disable the plugin-container in Firefox 14?

With an older version of Firefox, I was able to disable the plugin-container by typing in 'about:config' in the toolbar, typing 'ipc' in the search bar on that page, then changing the value of the executable (or whatever it's called) for the plugin-container to 'false', and, finally, restarting Firefox.
However, even after doing that in Firefox 14, it still runs when I use Flash applications. Does anyone know another way to disable the plugin-container? Because in my honest opinion the plugin just causes more lag since it takes up a lot of memory (at one point it was at 100,000 k, which is ridiculous).
Sorry if someone has posted this question before.

I actually found that Flash Player started functioning normally again after I disabled protected mode. I tried toggling the plugin container on and off with protected mode off in flash, and it made no difference in the videos lagging.
In all honesty, this really isn't a problem with Firefox and the plugin container. It's a problem with Adobe using the public to beta test a feature that shouldn't be published just quite yet.

• I get the "unresponsive script" message now for nearly all sites, and sometimes this is followed by the popup box saying that the "plugin contain for Firefox has stopped working."

Many sites now say that a script is unresponsive. And by unresponsive I mean that the whole browser slows to a crawl and it can take ~20 minutes to get 2 pages loaded.
Also, I sometimes get a popup window saying the the plugin container has stopped working.
This whole issue is making Firefox unusable. I cringe to say it, but I'm currently in IE. :-/

• Ever since last Fri's update Firefox keeps crashing on most websites I visit. I've had no response to all the crash reports.

I'm operating a new laptop using Windows 7. Ever since the update last Fri, Firefox keeps crashing on most websites I visit. It's very frustrating. I've browsed to folder C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\components but there is no file nsBrowserOpt.dll.

Mozilla do not respond to crash reports that have been submitted. they are used to help analyze the causes of the crashing in order to make Firefox more stable.
Can you post some of the recent crash report IDs as shown in the Firefox crashes article, that may help somebody identify the cause of your crashes.

• When I go to Firefox and go to check on the Plugins for updates, Firefox freezes. I have reset Firefox. I have uninstalled and reinstalled. Still have problem.

I've been running Firefox for a long time. I am running the program on Windows 7. This has happened EVERY TIME over the last four months when I check for plugin updates. I am currently running this on Firefox 21 and also had the same problem on Firefox beta. There are also times where, when I click on a link and a new tab opens, I get the same freeze. Ready to bail.

I followed the steps to start Firefox in safe mode without any extensions running. I checked through Tools>addons to make sure they were disabled. They were. I tried to check to see if my plugins are up-to-date and it froze again, like normal.

• Firefox keeps freezing then crashing and a window opens saying "The Plug-In container for Firefox has stopped working..."

Every 5 minutes or so Firefox will freeze and if I'm on a website that uses the flash player the ads and what not will stop and an error thing replaces them and says Adobe Flash Player has crashed. Then a window pops up and says "The Plug-In container for Firefox has stopped working..." or something like that. Then my laptop will work slower until Firefox crashes. Any solutions ?

• Firefox keeps freezing when I try to open the add-ons menu.

When ever I try to open the Add-ons menu under Tools on my firefox, it keeps freezing. I also noticed that my time clock that is normally on the bottom right of my firefox window is no longer there either.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
See Troubleshooting extensions and themes and Troubleshooting plugins
You can also try to delete the files extensions.* (extensions.rdf, extensions.cache, extensions.ini, extensions.sqlite) and compatibility.ini in the Firefox profile folder to reset the extensions registry. New files will be created when required.
See "Corrupt extension files": http://kb.mozillazine.org/Unable_to_install_themes_or_extensions
If you see disabled extensions that are not compatible on the next start in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions" then click the "Find Updates" button to do a compatibility check.

• I get an error messge the Plugin container for Firefox failed

It causes Firefox to freeze up and I have to manually shut off my laptop.

This means that you have downloadd the file from the internet, and the file did not download completely so the computer can't play it. To fix this, just re-download the file and make sure it finishes.

• Since the iOS 7 update I can't sign in to some web sites like e-school book. Why?

Any help appreciated.

hello TomatoQueen, please try the following:
enter about:config into the location bar & search for the preference named network.http.keep-alive and in case it is set to false, toggle it to true (the default value) by double-clicking it. afterwards restart the browser and see if it's working correctly again...
otherwise turn network.http.spdy.enabled to false.

• Firefox 4 will automatically open links on certain sites without clicking.

On certain sites, most notably Gmail, Firefox 4 will open a link in a new tab without clicking. If I open an email message that contains a link to an address, Firefox will automatically open a new tab with this address in Google Maps.
I have also noticed it on a couple of other sites, though where exactly escapes me at the moment.
Any ideas how to stop this?

Yes. This is very annoying. I use Gmail and same thing happens to me too! Also happens with youtube and picasa links. I have not found a cause or a solution to this so far.

• Logic pro 9.1.2 freezes when opening and says quantize

I created a track, and every version of it freezes when i open it, it loads and then it brings up a window that says quantize and then it freezes at that point. with every version I have saved except version 1. This arrangement is extremely important. please help.  it originally crashed and i didn't save the report, now i can't get it to crash again, now it just freezes.  I can create a video of all of this happening if that would help?

I've experienced this bug and have determined how to replicate it; it's caused when you perform an Audio-to-MIDI Groove Template function in the Sample Editor Factory on a Flex-Timed (Quantized) Region.  Performing Audio-to-Midi Groove Template on a non-Flextime/quantized file performs as expected.
Here's a simple way to replicate the bug:
1. Create blank session, create 1 audio and 1 software instrument track
2. Import a drum loop into the audio track
3. Activate Flex mode, select Slicing on the drum loop
4. Select the software instrument track
5. Double click drum loop
6. In Factory, select Audio-To-Midi Groove Template, click 'Use'
7. Quit Logic
8. Relaunch Logic
The session now seems to be permanently corrupted.  After force quitting Logic, Logic will continue to try to load this session on relaunch so you have to use another session to launch Logic rather than just click Logic's icon.
I've tried deleting the quantized audio file and removing all undo and fade files from the session directory but the session still hangs upon opening, so the corruption seems embedded in the session file itself.
I've reported it to Apple.
