Since updating to 10.7.1 internet sharing between macbook pros via airport no longer works.

Updated macbook pros to 10.7.1 and since then have trouble in sharing an ethernet internet connection to other devices by airport/wi-fi (ipod touch, iphone and other macbook). Any suggestions?

Thanks mj - I'm up and running.
I could get the dmg into the sidebar of disk utility but not mount it.
Here's what I did. I booted in safe mode. That enabled me to mount the disk image for the combo update, but didn't fix the other problems.
Installing the combo update fixed the problems I referred to - ie I can mount dmgs, use safari and the widgets work, even have my vpn back.
It however reintroduced another problem - namely that I could not use any of the software for my canon eos 20d software - esp. the eos utility to download photos. This problem was previously fixed by loading iousbfamily-xxx as described in the discussions - I think this is basically an earlier version of the usb driver than the driver loaded with 10.4.7. Fearing that this may have caused the problem, it was with some trepidation that I tried it again.
So far so good.
Thanks very much for the time you've put in helping me - I'm very grateful. Not being a techo I swapped from PCs to MACs to get away from all the update/compatibility problems and I get very frustrated when things don't work.

  • Internet on my MacBook Pro, via my iPhone 3G ? what's the best app ?

    Hello you all,
I live in the middle of nowhere in Argentina. I have an iPhone 4S plus 3G contract with Movistar-Telefonica, and a MacBook Pro under Lion.
In your experience what would be the best app to get internet on my MacBook Pro via my iPhone  4S ?
And in that case where can I get the operation manual ?  :-)
Best results with ? Airport Express Base station ? Bluetooth ? what else ?
Many thanks  for your help !!!

There is no separate app, necessary or possible. If your carrier offers a tethering plan, the iPhone will support it directly. See:

If your carrier does not offer such a plan, then no app can change that.

  • Set up home sharing between macbook pro and desktop pc. tried to sync music in library but ipod is not syncing the library. why not?

I set up homesharing between macbook pro and desktop pc.  I have attempted to sync songs on my mac and pc, but the ipod will not sync the full library.  why not?

    Hey harold WD!
You will want to consolidate your entire library onto one computer using Home Sharing in order to sync all of these items onto your iPod. Use the following article to help you accomplish this:

  • Internet Sharing from Macbook Pro to iPad???

Trying to get my wife's iPad to connect to the internet in a hotel that has wired high speed internet but no wifi.
My MacBook Pro connects just fine. So I turned on Internet Sharing for both Bluetooth and wifi (with WEP password for wifi).
The iPad connects to the Mac by wifi but says it has no internet connection.
With Bluetooth, it pairs OK. The Mac sets it up as serial port sharing (no other choice offered, but within that there is a choice of modem or RS232 protocol). But when I try to connect it connects momentarily then disconnects right away.
Any suggestions on how to let the iPad get at the internet in this situation?

    I am still not succeeding.
I just upgraded to a new Macbook Pro with Mountain Lion. Testing at home, where there are no issues around hotel ISP limitations and I feel pretty safe originating an open wifi network for a few minutes.
Set up Internet Sharing from Ethernet to Wifi. Used the Create Network option for wifi in the menu bar to set up an open unprotected wifi network whose name is the name of my Mac. I can choose any wifi channel from 1 to 11; it makes no difference.
I can see that network from my wife's iPad, and can connect to it no problem. But as in all similar tests since Snow Leopard came out, Safari in the iPad can't open any web sites; it says it is not connected to the internet. I can also connect to the MBP wifi from my iPhone, but if I select it, the 3G symbol still shows at the top of the screen because the phone cannot find an internet connection over that wifi.
Clearly some other people are managing to do what I cannot. Quite possibly some piece of third party software on my Mac is interfering. Little Snitch, for example, though it is currently turned off.

  • Using Internet Sharing on Macbook Pro 17" (intel) with the iPhone

    Hi,
i like to use Internet Sharing on my Macbook Pro 17" (intel) with OS X Leopard.
Enabling Internet Sharing on Leopard works just fine. I share my Ethernet Connection with the Airport.
I can connect to the Airport sharing the connection with multiple devices.
It does however not work with the iPhone.
The phone can see the network. It even connects and gets its lease (IP Adress / etc)...
I did open a terminal and did ping the iphone. Doing that i disconnected the iphone from the wifi network and connected again. I found out that immediately after connecting the connection is working (ping reply) for about 2 or 3 seconds and then there is no reply... Sometimes it is working... but 99% of the connections dont work... (working for 2 seconds and then no reply)
This is only with the Internet Sharing on the Macbook Pro (intel) in combination with the iPhone. I did not have any other wifi problems with the iPhone or with Internet Sharing on my Macbook Pro.

    Hi,
    thank you for your posts!
Nathan C: Did you notice this issue occurring when you were using Mac OS X 10.4?
Yes! I did not get it to work with Tiger also.
mucmac: just solved the issue by setting the channel for airport under Airport Options in sys prefs>sharing>internet sharing from Automatic to a specific channel
    lazarus: Doesn't work for me.
    and not for me
Richard Cartledge: Maybe it is a Leopard issue?
I think its a Macbook Pro / iPhone issue. Because other clients work well also the iPhone works on a Powerbook using Internet-Sharing.
Aaron@SODE: No luck for me! Tried every Channel and every MacBook Pro and MacBook in the company. The only Internet Sharing working is a PowerBook G4 running Leopard 10.5.1. iPhone works with the Powerbook without any problem.
The same applies to me! I really think it is a problem with the iPhone / Macbook Pro.
mucmac: what model of macbook Pro do you use? I cant get it to work on a Macbook Pro 17"

  • Internet Sharing on MacBook Pro, Mountain Lion

I am having trouble enabling internet sharing on my macbook pro with os x mountain lion, version 10.8.3. My computer is connected to the internet from an ethernet cord, and I want to share the connection with my iphone wirelessly. I have tried going to system preferences > sharing > internet sharing. From here I chose "Ethernet" from the dropdown menu "Share your connection from." I chose "Wi-Fi" from the ports options under "To computers using." (AirPort is NOT an option listed under the ports menu). When I then check the internet sharing box to enable the sharing, a message pops up saying "To share your Internet connection, you must turn on Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi is turned off." Obviously, I don't have Wi-Fi, so I can't do this. How do I fix this problem?? Please help!!

No, I don't have Wi-Fi. There is no Wi-Fi in this building. If there were, I wouldn't need to share my internet through the ethernet cord.

  • Internet sharing to (Android) phone via Airport in my iMac

Can I share my internet via Airport (wireless) thru my iMac so i can use it on my Android phone?
    Can it be done?
I dont have a wireless modem, but i shared internet so far but i cant make it to work for ma Xperia X10
    Help...
    Anybody?

Did you set up Internet Sharing to  share from WiFi to Bluetooth PAN?
Does the phone use Bluetooth PAN?
If you've done all that and can't get internet, try adding a Domain Name Server to your phone, such as OpenDNS or Google. The addresses are:
    OpenDNS:
    208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220
    Google:
    8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4
I don't have any other ideas.

  • How to set up internet connection between MacBook Pro and an old eMac?

I got an old eMac without wifi and a MacBook Pro. I'd like to share the network connection via ethernet cable to my eMac, but I can't get it work.
I'd like to use it with screenrecycler and it needs a network connection.
How to do it? How to set up the connection between the client and the host? Could somebedy give me a step by step guide?
    Thank you very much

    Hello,
First, are you using Wifi for Internet on the MBP?
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list, Wifi on the MBP.
In Shating on both, enable File Sharing, Screen Sharing, & Web Sharing on both.
Then with the Ethernet cable between the two, find the IPs of both, or use Finder>Go>Connect to Server>Browse... see what shows up.

  • Home Sharing between Macbook Pro and AppleTV not connecting, what's wrong?

So I have one of the late 2011 Macbook Pro models and the newest AppleTV that I do a lot of Home Sharing for movies and stuff like that. This problem keeps popping up though where they can't communicate with each other and the videos either stop loading half way through, or my AppleTV can't even connect with my macbook to start watching at all. I've gone through most of the possible solutions I've seen posted before and even the troubleshooting by apple about it. I've made sure they are both on the same apple ID, the same wi-fi network, restarted my router, even re-setup my router from scratch, closed itunes on my macbook, turned my wifi on and off a couple of times (worked for a few then stopped again), made sure that everything is on the most current software, but nothing seems to be doing the trick. This has been going on for months now and I'm pretty much sick of it happening. Somebody please help me fix this so I can get on with my movies!!

Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.
You can download and install iStumbler (NetStumbler for windows users) to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel or adjusting your multicast rate.
There are other types of problems that can affect networks, but this is by far the most common, hence worth mentioning first. Networks that have inherent issues can be seen to work differently with different versions of the same software. You might also try moving the Apple TV away from other electrical equipment.
If this doesn't help, contact your ISP, this is most likely a network problem.

  • Airport and personal file sharing between macbook pros

My wife and I each have 2.2 ghz macbook pros. I wanted to transfer about 30 photos from iphoto on my macbook pro to my wife's macbook pro; I turned on personal file sharing on my computer (the "host"), exported the jpegs from iphoto to my shared folder, and then used the wireless network to mount the shared folder on my wife's desktop. She downloaded the jpegs onto her computer from my shared folder but found that 5 of them would not open-- preview gave a message that it couldn't recognize the files. The other 25 photos seemed to open fine. I went back to my computer and e-mailed the same 5 photos that preview couldn't recognize, and my wife's computer had no trouble opening the e-mailed photos with preview.
Does anyone have any idea what went wrong with using personal file sharing and airport to transfer the photos between the 2 macbook pros? All software and firmware on both computers are both up to date. Thanks very much.

Not sure what went wrong, but there's an easier way ...
On the source Mac open iPhoto Preferences/Sharing and check "Share my photos" and "Share entire Library"
On the destination Mac open iPhoto Preferences/Sharing and check "Look for shared photos"

  • File Sharing between macbook pro and imac

    Hello,
I'm having trouble with file sharing between my bankbook pro and my new iMac. I want to share some photos on my iPhoto library from my macbook pro and transfer them to my iMac. I've turned on file sharing and tried connecting, entered in my username and password, but it won't connect. I've tried several times with the correct username and password combination, and the box just shakes and denies entry. I've even tried connecting as a guest user and it says "access is denied, contact system administrator." Can anyone help? I've upgraded to Yosemite on both computers.
    Thanks in advance.

I've done everything that you've recommended, however, I am still having trouble sharing files between my macbook and iMac. I even tried using airdrop to transfer files, but nothing seems to be working. I've made sure the firewall options are what they're supposed to be and everything. Whenever I try to login as administrator to file share, it won't accept my password. I don't know why airdrop isn't working either.

  • Sharing between macbook pro and iMac

I wonder if you can use the imac and macbook pro like as one computer. Sharing everything. And how to do it through wifi. Thank you.

Unfortunately they do not work like that. However you could use a programme such a ChronoSync if you want to synchronise certain files. I have this setup between an iMac and MBA over ethernet and it works well.

  • Since updating to iOS 8, the playlist function on my iPhone 4s is no longer working properly. It won't let me select various artist's music to add to the list. Simply the first one i pick, normally. Any ideas? Thanks

To try and explain, i will select 'new playlist' and then go to the first artist i would like to add music from. I then select track X and add that to the playlist.
I then go back and move to another, different artist. When i click to look at their tracks (which are on my phone), they are not there and all i can select is track X again from the first artist's tracks that i looked at.
It is unbelievable annoying. Any help would be massively appreciated.
    Thanks,
    N

    I have help for you!!!
I had EXACTLY the same issue recently. What I had to do on my PC was go into the My computer section> click on my C drive> click on users> click on my username> go into music and then iTunes> Here you should see something that says iTunes Library. Make sure that iTunes is Closed and then take the iTune library and drag it onto Your desktop. This will create a copy on the desktop but iTunes will not see it. Reopen iTunes and you should see an option to scan for media. Once you do this iTunes should re-build your iTunes library and It should be able to sync. If it syncs fine and all your content is available go to the iTunes library that you dragged to the desktop and delete it as you should not have a new one. If this does not work absolutley do NOT delete the iTunes library that is on the desktop.
Call Apple and let them know of the steps you have taken and request some help. This should fix it though!

  • 10.7.1 update doesn't fix my internet sharing problem

I've updated my Macbook (late 2008) to 10.7.1 today. I'm disappointed to find that the internet sharing issue still exists. I can ping websites through it, but wget never work. Google.com is accessible while other sites don't load on my iPod touch and Palm Pre Plus. But it did work fine within seconds after internet sharing was started. And internet sharing on my iMac with 10.6.8 works perfectly.
I'm using PPPoE to connect to the internet. I guess there are some problems with MTU (maximum transmission unit).
Don't tell me to change wifi channel or set password, it doesn't help.

Internet sharing worked on 10.7 after doing 1 tweak, that is by changing my Computer Name in internet sharing to something else other than the default one... however after upgrading to 10.7.1, the upgrade would mess up with the same tweaks again. It brought my Computer Name to its default, however when I clicked on edit it would give the changed name... I noticed that it has something to do with the IP Address but in any case I did the following and it works again for me on 10.7.1:
    1) Go to System Preferences>Sharing and click on Internet Sharing (don't 'tick' it yet!)
    2) After upgrading to 10.7.1, the Computer Name displayed on the Internet Sharing Screen would revert to the original, i.e. YourName's MacBook Pro. However, upon click edit next to the space where you can enter your Computer Name, it would give the name I had given while I was on 10.7.
    3) Now you just have to make sure that both names are identical (do not use the default name YourName's MacBook Pro). Please see snapshot below (yes, my Computer Name is 'Network-Error', so don't be surprised:))!
    4) Once you have confirmed that both names are identical, you are set to go and you may 'tick' the Internet Sharing option
    5) An arrow facing upwards will appear instead of the wireless icon on the top tray and your device such as an iPhone should connect without any issues (an IP address will be given).
Note: the other options that I have kept in the Wi-Fi Options tab are as follows:
    1) Network Name: should be identical to the one you have entered above
    2) Channel: 11
    3) Security: 40-bit WEP
    4) Password: I've entered a five-digit password that contains numbers
To confirm that its working for me, I've added a screenshot from my iPhone below:
It doesn't work for me. Thanks anyway.

  • Internet sharing between cellphone and computer us...

I have watched some videos in youtube about internet sharing between cellphones and computer using "BLUETOOTH"... How do they do that? How can we do this? Anybody here can share to us how to do this??

I personally would not of thaught this is possible as bluetooth is essentially just a radio signal, obviously it can transmit data but i dont think it has the ability to stream a broadband connection. Could be completely wrong but thats what i think.
    You are wrong
Most Nokia phones with a bluetooth interface can let you connect your computer to the Internet using your phone as a modem connected by bluetooth. So, BT definitely can support the data stream.
Enabling a computer to use the phone's Internet connection over BT or via USB cable is possible with no additional software on the phone. Doing the opposite, allowing the phone to use the computer's Internet connection via BT, requires additional software. GNUBox does just that.
