Since updating to Mavericks, I can't transfer files to my External HD!!

Why? I never had this problem prior to updating.

Firewire or thunderbolt hard drive of ANY Mfg?.......... or USB WD using WD Drive Manager?.........OR just a WD hard drive of any kind using WD Drive Manager ?
FIrewire & Thunderbolt drives are having issues with Mavericks and HD using WD Drive Manager , avoid same until a fix is issued if you can.
many are reporting same, there is a firewire fault and TB HD on external HD from LaCie (Seagate) and from WD especially.
Technicians are looking into it.
Until there is resolution, consider setting up a USB ext. Time machine HD.
Until then consider confining Mavericks use with USB HD.
Ive tested a very long line of USB HD on Mavericks, all seem fine.
*However some are reporting now even USB HD are having problems IF they are running WD software
Recommend DO NOT ATTACH any WD MyBook externals (firewire, thunderbolt or otherwise).
I dont have same to test, so I dont know if the problem is in the firmware on the SATA bridge or if its a problem with the WD software

Since updating to Mavericks, i can no longer use my Ethernet USB adopter as the drivers are only supported to the previous version. I need to use this where i work as Mac's cant accsess the wireless. Ive been told the only option restore to the prev OSX.. The only problem is i havnt set up time machine.
Is there anything i can do to either revert to the original OSX ( the mac is only a month old) or restore to an older version without using timemachine.... Or even better just get my Adoptor to work?

How can I transfer files from one external HD (WD My Passport) to another external HD (Seagate Backup Plus)? WD drive was improperly ejected and Finder no longer recognizes it. Tried fixing with Disk Utility but failed.

WD drive was improperly ejected (although we did tell it to eject) and now Finder no longer recognizes it. Using MacBook Pro and I just upgraded to Yosemite before this happened. Was told at Apple Store to use Disk Utility to repartition, but it failed. It says to backup files and restore. But how do I backup files? Or would appreciate any other suggestions to repair drive.

Take the exernal drive appart. Take out the harddrive. Try reading the data via a usb adapter. Put a household finan on the hd.

Since updating to OSX Mavericks I can't use the smart groups in Contacts to address emails. This was not a problem previously. How do I get the functionality of smart groups restored?

I discovered this problem this morning after upgarding to Mavericks.
I've found an easy answer: Apple have changed the way it confirms the addition of Groups it seems.
Type the name of the group in the Cc: or Bcc: field, hit the Space bar, then hit Enter. Vavoom!!

How can I transfer files off an external hard drive formatted for windows?

I just bought my first mac (yay!) and am trying to transfer my files off of my old pc. The problem is that I stored all my personal files on an external hard drive, which is of course formatted for windows. My mac will open it, but it is "read only." I tried plugging it back into my pc and using the Migration Assistant to transfer my files over, but it was not detected (rest of the pc was).
However, the second time I tried plugging it in to my pc, it told me it would need to be formatted first. Obviously my mac has changed something on it, and now all my personal files are on a hard drive that is unusable by either my old pc or my new mac!
Any suggestions would be appreciated! Heads up though, I am not especially computer literate, and my pc needs to stay intact as the husband needs it and some of the programs on it for school. Also, I have a second external hard drive that is brand new with nothing on it, if that will come in handy.

Format the extra HDD to EXFAT as previously indicated. There are two ways that can use to transferr the data.
1. Connect both drives to the PC and the copy the files to the newly formatted (EXFAT) drive from the HDD with the data . Then connect the EXFAT drive to the MBP and transfer the data to same.
2. Connect both drives to the MBP and open DISK UTILITY>RESTORE. Drag the drive with the data on it to the 'Source' field. Drag the EXFAT drive to the 'Destination' field. Click on the 'Restore' butt is on. After the transfer has been completed, close DISK UTILITY and place the data on the MBP where you want it.

Can I transfer files from an external hard drive to iCloud?

I have been looking for a great alternative to backing up my all of my photos (I am a photographer). I own two externals that I'd like to get certain files backed up once more in another place just to make sure they are safe. So can I transfer my photos and files from my externals to iCloud? Or is this not a good back up plan? Thanks so much in advance!

Can't transfer files to external drive

After the latest upgrades I now can't transfer files to my external drive. I have done it many times before with Arch and now it says I don't have permissions to create it.
what is needed to get it working again?

The volume manager now mounts with the ntfs kernel module by default, which doesn't support writing to NTFS. a fix is available in the wiki:

If not, we'll need more information. What filesystem is the drive, what DE / WM are you using, kernel version, etc.
I've used this Seagate external drive many times with many distros and even Windows and haven't had any trouble until today. I don't even know if its ntfs or not. I didn't matter before.
does this mean that I will have trouble with other distros that use Gnome 2.28? Why would they do this? I've backed up the files I need to a cd and I may just use another distro instead. Arch is nice but not that nice if I have to reconfigure things that worked previously.
Will the new Ubuntu 9.10 do the same thing since it has Gnome 2.28?
I just had another crash because of the new upgrades. Too bad. Arch is not any better than many other distros, from my experiences. I see it breaks just like Fedora and others.

I can send email but cannot receive it since updating to Mavericks

Since updating to Mavericks on my Imac & MacBook I cannot receive email in Mac’s Mail - I can however send email.
In connection Doctor I am getting the green dot saying my SMTP (outgoing) is working just fine and I am getting a red dot saying my POP (incoming) is not working.
I know the settings are just fine! as Mail works perfectly in my iPhone and I can both send and receive email. I have tried resetting a hundred times to no avail. I am on own VPS server with Names Co (in the UK).
What I do know:
1) My email settings are correct - despite mail saying it cannot connect to the server becuase of number of issues such as timeout or wrong password or wrong settings ( I get various answers in connection doctor and system preferences/accounts)
2) My VPS server and website is just fine.
3) My ISP is up and running fine and does not block any ports.
What I have tried doing:
1) Changed passwords - all work fine in my iphone.
2) Tried activating and deactivating my account.
3) Tried using SSL Port with password on and off - tried the other ports.
Help is greatly appreciated

and SMTP 995 for incoming using SSL with password (have tried without)

Mail Won't Open Since Updating to Mavericks

Since updating to Maverick's, I've been having trouble opening Mail. If I restart my computer, I am able to open it one time. Then if I close it, I can't reopen it without restarting the computer. If I try to open it, I get the spinning beach ball when I put my cursor on the info bar at the top of the screen and I have to Force Quit to get it to stop. Does anyone have any ideas what might be causing this? I searched the forums and came up empty so if anyone can point me in the right direction I'd appreciate that too. I have updated my software to the most recent version, OS 10.9. I installed the Mail update, version 1.0, back in November. I am running on a 2.7Ghz Intel Core i5 iMac. Since updating to Mavericks my mac book pro locks up about 3 to 4 times a day, only way to recover is a hard reboot

Since updating to mavericks my mac boook pro locks up 3 to 4 times a day, the only way to recover is to hard reboot the system. This started 2 days ago - about 15 days after upgrading. All teh apps are visible just can't do anything with them.

Please determine if the problems also occur in "Safe Mode":
Safe Mode or "Safe Boot" is a troubleshooting mode that bypasses all third party system extensions and loads only required system components. Read about it: Starting up in Safe Mode
You must disable FileVault before you can start your Mac in Safe Mode.
Starting your Mac in Safe Mode will take longer than usual, graphics will not render smoothly, audio is disabled on some Macs, and some programs (iTunes for example) may not work at all.
Merely starting your Mac in Safe Mode is not intended to resolve the problem, it's to observe its performance without certain additional components.
To end Safe Mode restart your Mac normally. Shutdown will take longer as well.

Cannot wake up after screen goes black occasionally since update to maverick. I have to wait a few mintues and press power button to restart. Any one has similar issue?

I've found the problem!!
Mavericks for some reason overheats the GPU.
I downloaded a free 3 day trial of Temperature Gauge Pro http://www.tunabellysoftware.com/tgpro/
It showed a GPU 0 diode temperature of 122 degrres C. I think that's about 250 degrees Farenhiet. Insanely hot. No wonder the poor thing was crapping out. TGP alows fan control and so I set them to maximum and watched the temp come down quickly.
After all these months of frustration it turned out to be a simple fix. So I bought the program for $10. Sure a lot cheaper than having the Apple Experts replace a GPU or CPU like some have sugested.
What I still can't figure out is why Apple won't fix the problem from thier end and just update the fan parameters on Mavericks.

Since updating to Mavericks, I can't transfer files to my External HD!!
