Since upgrading to Leopard, can't check for software updates or iTunes stor
since upgrading to Leopard, i can't get software upgrades. I get error messages "software update can't connect to the update server. make sure you're connected to the internet, then try again. software update can't check for updates because of a network problem." My network connections are fine.
Also get "itunes could not connect to the itunes store. the network connection was refused. make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active, then try again." when I try to go to itunes store. Again, my network connections are fine.
Any ideas?
the solution is to use Little Snitch Configuration.app, which monitors online activity and gives option to allow/deny access of a given program.

Don't panic. OS X 10.5.8 is the most popular PowerPC OS out there. People run it everyday without security breaches, including myself. It isn't Windows!

Software can't check for an update because of a network problem
Since I updated to Lion I keep getting this http://grab.by/cKz4 [Software can't check for an update because of a network problem window] everytime I click on Software update in finder. Also I get the same window when I try to open the App Store app.... my internet connection works fine and I previously updated with the direct stand alone downloads from the Apple site.
I downloaded the new 10.7.2 like this as well as the iphoto update.
Any ideas why this is happening?just did a bit of a search and discovered that it was Little Snitch that was the problem.... you have to update to the latest version [or switch it off for software before using software update]

It sounds like you are unable to download the iOS 8.0.2 update either, over the air, or using iTunes. If you are updating the software on your phone in Settings > General > software update I would recommend starting with this article:

If you are using iTunes, I would use this article instead:

If you are getting a specific error number, the following article will help you get that resolved:

I'm running Lion on a Late 2008 MacBook Air.
With no other applications running, I can no longer Check for Software Updates. It gets about half way through the checking process and then freezes.
The MBA passes Disk Utility. Thoughts?

Mine can sometimes sit for quite a while (maybe 10 minutes??) before it finally finishes.
You could look at the relevant logs via Console (Utilities folder) to see if Software Update is complaining about anything.

because you do not have a 3rd generation device. The OS Version says so , otherwise you would be at 4.3.5 minimum and also Itunes is also always correct in determining if you have the latest OS ( if not it fetches the newest from Apple's Servers ) . And because a 2nd generation iPod stops at 4.2.1 you can't get the newest OS, because your device is old. Buy a new iPod , they have iOS5 preinstalled. -
My mac mini is running slow. Bought it in 2009. Activity monitor shows nothing running that should not be. Someone suggested it might be my operating system? Check for software updates, and I am current. Suggestions?
Open Activity Monitor, Show:>All Processes, sort on CPU%, see if anything using too much CPU% when this happens, click on Memory tab, do you have many Pageouts?
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
Check the S.M.A.R.T. status of the drive in Disk Utilty by highlighting the Drive & looking at the bottom of the window. -
I checked for software updates, but no pending updates were found, I'm running OS X vr 10.5.8.

amm wait..first download the latest software (7.1.1) from the verified page..
then after the download completes.. back up ur device !
then after the back up completes.. turn off ur device
after that process jst hold down the home button for about 10 seconds and without leaving the button connect the usb cable to the pc. this process takes ur phone to the recovery mode!
now on the itunes press (shift ) and then click on update it opens some opener of the files now select the latest software that u've jst downloaded from the internet now there go.. -

Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up. -

The battery drain issue started when I updated my iphone 4 to the IOS 6.1.2.
The battery will go from 100% to 0% in about 3 hours !!!
I called Apple support and they told me that they are not aware of an issue affecting the battery with the latest update. They did a diagnostic test on my iphone and found that my battery is healthy. Then then recommended that I backup my iphone, restore the factory settings and recover after that. In other words, delete everything off my iphone and reinstall everything all over again. I waisted a couple of hours doing that and .....I still have the issue of the battery drain.
I finally discovered the problem, and thus the solution!
To solve this issue, do the following:
Settings ---> Mail, Contacts, Calendars --->Fetch New Data ---> Advanced
Now click on your hotmail account or your company email account (anything in that folder other than yahoo, gmail or aol),
Change the setting from Push to Fetch !!!
And Viola ! Problem will be solved !
The problem seems to be that the mail exchange (i.e. microsoft, hotmail...etc) keeps checking and pushing emails from the exchange server every second (continiousely) and this is causing the battery to drain.When you change the setting to Fetch, then emails will start downloading every 15 min; but at least your battery will hold charge as it is supposed to do, until Apple comes up with 6.1.3 that hopefully will fix this issue.
Good luck. Hope this works out for you folks hence it sure did work for me this morning and it sure feels great.

Not working from iPhone's app store or iTunes "Check For Updates"
From the phone, it says "Cannot retrieve download information. Please connect with iTunes."
From my laptop, it just stops trying after a minute or two.
I assume it's Apple's fault, seeing as how about two hours ago it checked just fine.
I can still roam around the iTunes store from both my phone + computer.
Anyone else having such a problem?Well, problem not just GONE, but RESOLVED.
I had decided to contact and report to [email protected] Exchanged a couple of informative and responsive messages with "Todd" and finally got confirmation (as follows) that Apple had resolved the pb. I did not worry much in the meantime, given that so many folks around here had reported similar pbs regarding access to certain areas of the iTunes Store.

couldn’t be found on the server “swcdn.apple.com”.
I had to fix a few permissions but that didn't solve this problem.
