Since upgrading to Yosemite, when I try to compose a new message, the window is wider than the screen and I can't adjust the width.

Ever since I upgraded to Yosemite on my MacBook Air, I cannot get the mail window to adjust to a size that fits my screen. It is wider than the screen size and although I can adjust the height, the adjustment arrows will not adjust the width. I am not having the same problem with my mac mini since I upgraded that computer. This is a pain because I spend most of my time on my air sending out e-mails to clients

It appears you are experiencing issues with window sizes and displays. Have you attempted to adjust your resolution at any point? That may be why the windows aren't managed properly. The following article may help you find a solution:
OS X Yosemite: Adjust your display’s resolution
Your display’s resolution determines the size of text and objects on your screen. By default, the resolution on your display is set to show the sharpest text and the most detailed images. While it’s best to use the default resolution, you can manually set the resolution to make text and objects appear larger on your screen, or adjust it to make text and objects appear smaller so you have more space on your screen.
Depending on how you adjust the resolution, some apps may not fit entirely on the screen. Using a scaled resolution may affect performance.
Set the resolution for your primary display
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Displays, then click Display.
Select Scaled, then select one of the scaled resolution options.
Set the resolution for a connected display
If you have more than one display, additional resolution options are available.
After the display is connected, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Displays, then click Display.
Press the Option key while you click Scaled to see additional resolutions for the second display. Then select a scaled resolution option for the second display.

Since upgrading to Yosemite, when I hit either apostrophe or quotation key in Apple Mail, that starts new paragraph like I am hitting the return/enter key right next to the key I am hitting.
I've eliminated the possibility that I suffer from fat finger syndrome by ruling out the issue in other apps like Pages/Word (apostrophe/quotation works fine). This is only happening in Apple Mail. Example: [ Can't ] appears as [ Can' ] with [ t ] as the start of a new paragraph. I use an Apple wireless keyboard, so I also tried using an Apple keyboard connected by USB port. Still have the same issue in Apple Mail, but not in other apps.
Any idea what this is?

Update.
This only happens when I am typing above my signature information or replying to an email when the body of the email I am responding to included. Does not happen when I am typing a blank email.

Try a reset by pressing the home and sleep buttons until you see the Apple logo, ignoring the slider. Takes about 5-15 secs of button holding and you won't lose any data or settings.

When I try to create a new Message on my Mac, Messages does not bring up my Contacts

I have followed the instructions to setup Messages, I can send messages to the email addresses that I have memorized, but when I try to create a new Message on my Mac, Messages does not bring up my Contacts when I type in the search field for a person that has an iPad or iPhone.
This sems out of sorts for an Apple product. Their stuff normally just works.
For some reason, My Mac Mini with Mountain Lion doesn't recognize my contact names, or it isn't synched with my contacts...
Anybody else want to weigh in, please?

I would point out that I did say...
Of course the Contacts List has to have people listed in it.
The Error seems to be that you have not even got an My Card.
The OS when the computer is brand new and you set up the first Admin Account should create at least once Card entry for the Address Book/Contacts which has the Head and Shoulders icon (the My Card)
The does presume the the first account on the Mac doers have a person's First name and Last name to work with.
Of course not everyone sets things up this way.
Anyhow
To Check the Contacts List open the app.
Go to the Preferences.
Go to the Accounts section.
This should list at least two "accounts
One is for Syncing with iCloud and the other is for storing the Info on the Mac itself
In System Preferences > iCloud you can only set up one Apple ID to be the iCloud ID.
If you do or have changed this you may have extra accounts in the Contacts > Preferences > Accounts

And without info - it's near to impossibly to help. Try my general troubleshooting note:
Troubleshooting note
When iMovie doesn't work as intended this can be due to a lot of reasons
iMovie Pref files got corrupted - trash it/they and iMovie makes new and error free one's
problem in iMovie Cache folder - trash Cache.mov and Cache.plist
Creating a new User-Account and log into this
This forces iMovie to create all pref. and cache files new and error free
Event or Project got corrupted - try to make a copy and repair
a Codec is used that doesn't work (even though iMovie and/or iDVD tries to / they fail in the end)
version miss match of QuickTime Player / iMovie / iDVD
preferences are wrong - Repair Preferences
other hard disk problem - Repair Hard Disk (Disk Util tool - but start Mac from ext HD or DVD)
External hard disks - MUST BE - Mac OS Extended (hfs) formatted to work with Video
( UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange - works for most other things - but not for Video )
USB-flash-memories - usually do not work
Net-work connected hard disks - usually do not work (most often not fast enough and WRONGLY FORMATTES as DOS etc)
iPhoto Library got problems - let iPhoto select another one or repair it. Re-build this first then try to re-start iMovie. When iMovie starts-up it first look trough this iPhoto library and if faulty it all Halt’s.
This You do by
First - close iPhoto
Secondly - on start up of iPhoto - Keep {cmd and alt-keys down}
Thirdly - now select all five options presented
THEN - WAIT a long long time (>20 hours are not strange)
free space on Start-Up (Mac OS) hard disk to low (<1Gb) - I never go under 25Gb free space for SD-Video (4-5 times more for HD)
external devices interferes - turn off Mac - disconnect all of them and - Start up again and re-try
GarageBand fix - start GB - play a few notes - Close it again and now try iMovie
Screen must be set to million-colors
Third-party plug-ins doesn't work OK
Run "Cache Out X", clear out all caches and restarts the Mac
Let Your Mac be turned on during one night. At about midnight there is a set of maintenance programs that runs and tidying up. This might help
Turn off Your Mac - and disconnect Mains - for about 20-30 minutes - at least this resets the FireWire port.
In QuickTime - DivX, 3ivx codec, Flip4Mac, Perian etc - might be problematic - temporarily move them out and re-try
(I deleted the file "3ivxVideoCodec.component" located in Mac HD/Library/Quicktime and this resolved my issue.)

I use iMovie almost everyday for Youtube videos. I have nothing in my imovie except the 5 clips that I'm editing now. I have all my media on an external hard drive and delete everything after I'm done with ( I empty all trash cans). I see you are experiencing issues with sound on applications when playing video/audio content. If this is the case, the first thing I would check is if the side switch is set to silent as this can cause applications to be mute. Below I have included an article that covers adjusting the settings for the side switch. Also, make sure to close all applications in Multitasking and power cycle the device. Test the sound issue after processing these steps.

Hi hope someone can help, this is driving me nuts..
All my incoming and outgoing mail is working fine, but when I try to type a new email or reply, mail becomes unresponsive the window flashes and I am unable to type in the To, Subject or Message areas. If I click like mad in these areas sometimes it will respond and I am able to type.
I have gone though most of the fixes such as "rebuilding mailboxes" "deleting com.apple.mail.plist" etc but still the same.
Any ideas would be welcome..

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up guest users” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

When I try to open a document from one of my files, it only seems to open in a small screen and I can't seem to make that screen any bigger to work on it. Has this happened to anyone else before? Oh, I wanted to add that trying to drag the little diagonal lines to the right of the page doesn't seem to work.

Mail dies when I try to start a new message

Hi,
since the recent software update, I have not been able to compose new messages, or reply/forward etc. Whenever I press the button on the window Mail dies and I have to restart. I have tried copying my mail folder and starting from scratch (I use IMAP), but this does not help (although it synchronises fine). I have also performed a disk utility to check the disk but it did not come up with any problems.
I have scanned the other similar messages on this forum but none seem to quite match mine, perhaps you can help? I have attached the error log from the crash.
One other point is that I have been trying to get gfortran working and I had installed gcc 4.2.0 and forgotten to change back to 4.0.1. This might not be related at all, but there was some mention of gcc in the log. If it is related, could you please tell me how I can fix this problem and if it might have affected other applications in the same way....

Unfortunately, I had limited success, although the advice you gave was spot on.
I took your advice and re-installed the OSX 10.4.7 update (I assume you writing 10.4.6 was a typo? I tried this initially, but then there were all sorts of messages about it being a bad idea to try to go backwards in version numbers). Anyway, 10.4.7 worked just great and I can now send mails again!!!
However, before I did this I tried the 'keychain access' located in appications/utilities but this crashes every time. I have attached the log of this failure and I think you spotted the deeper problem right away. Is there anything I can do to reset this somehow? I have tried moving the files from Library/Keychains to the desktop and launching it again (with and without a re-boot in between), but it does not help. The application screen appears but then disappears less than a second later.
Any further advice would be great!

When I open my Yahoo mail account, it comes up with lines between every entry. When I try to send a new message, the dialogue box is incomplete. The tool bar above the message box is empty so I cannot change the font or font size, etc.

This problem does not occur when I open my Yahoo mail account in Internet Explorer.
Because of it, I cannot use Firefox to access my Yahoo mail.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).

Since upgrading to Yosemite, when I try to compose a new message, the window is wider than the screen and I can't adjust the width.
