Since yesterday my iPhone 3gs won't shut down automatically. How do I fix this issue?

Yesterday I was using my iPhone with google maps to find some places I needed to visit. First thing I noticed was that my battery had gone from 100% to 26% in a very short period of time. Then I discovered that it wasn't going into its usual standby mode and nothing I could think to do has corrected the issue. I turned it off, I did the reboot. I checked all my settings.  Any suggestion to fix this issue? Thank you.
Oh yeah, I did read 5 pages of posts trying to see if this was a known issue but didn't want to go further.<G>
