Since you cannot start up from the install DVD, and since your system is (I assume) still under warranty, I would call Applecare - they have trained diagnostic people. If it is a warranty issue, there will be no charge if you are within the one year hardware warranty term.

They aren't the ones you hear on the radio.
They are the same songs remade by some unknown label to make money.

Sing one song but not another? Why?

Yesterday, I downloaded two songs from the iStore to iTunes. After downloading I highlighted/selected both and drug them to my iPhone in the iTunes directory. One song synced with the iPhone the other did not. I tried selecting the non-syncing song and dragging it to iPhone by itself. It won't sync. What could be the issue? There is another song in iTunes/iPhone with the same title, but they are different songs. So I don't think that is the issue. Thanks for any help.

If you use standard playlists iTunes Match normally works very well. Do expect erratic results with Smart Playlists.
Would suggest you simply try building new standard playlists - it is quick and they can always be removed if the result is not what you want.

Fried Mac, iMac lets not sing a song!

We got one of the new iMacs when they came out( rev.B) and now its really starting to act up. I logged of the sims 2( this game runs slower then I think it should) I went to look at my email, I opened Camino( would not trade this for the world) and clicked on .Mac when I went to pick the icon it started selecting the page ( like click and drag) to get to my mail I had to right click and open a tab. after I was done I got annoyed by it and restarted it, when I did that it took a long time for the screen to light up. When it did it started sounding like a jet very loud and got the guinea pig up and noisy. I restarted it and tried getting into single user mode but it said something about missing operating systems and such. now I don't want to turn it on. Can someone help please? iMac G5 2.0Ghz, 1MB Ram 160 HD 60 % full.

Is this one of those CDs where the main artist asks their friend to sing a song with them?
Such as, Slash's new album. Track 1 is "Slash Feat. Ian Astbury", track 2 is "Slash Feat. Ozzy Osbourne" and so on.
To fix this, select all the tracks on that album, right-click > Get Info, and say YES to changing multiple items.
Put "Slash" in the *Album Artist* field (for this example, of course).
Make sure it is the *Album Artist* field, not the plain Artist field.

How do I put a "Not Eligible" song on my iPhone

After iTunes matched my library, it found 60 items that were "Not Eligible". Most were music videos but some were not. If I turn iTunes Match on for my iPhone or iPad, it says the library will be removed and replaced with my iTunes Match library in iCloud. Once I do that, how do I get back access to the "not eligible" songs (i.e. sound, NOT video) that used to sit on my device? Is Apple actually saying that there is media out there that can be synced directly from the Mac to the iPhone that cannot be synced indirectly through iCloud?

I hate to say it, but I was totally sold on the idea of iTunes Match, and now am completely turned off. I spent 3 hours on the phone yesterday with tech support trying to figure this issue out. I have about 30 gig of music on my Mac and a 16 gig iPhone. I want to sych about 5 gig of music through the cable using the playlist I have set up on my computer and manage there, I slide songs in and out of it depending on what I want for the day. This has worked fine for me, the benefit of iTunes match to me was that if I was out on the road and wanted a certain song, then I could download it on the go. To my surprise after I turned on iTunes Match, the ability to synch a playlist is gone. I played around with it and couldn't figure it out. I stopped at the Apple Store and they told me I should be able to and that something must be out of whack. Last night I spent three hours on the phone with tech support and the first two people said the same thing and kept trying to walk me through the process to synch a playlist yet I kept telling them the option is not there. Finally I got an "iTunes Match" expert on the phone who in a very straightforward answer told me that the way the system in working is exactly as intended. I said "hold on, so any music I hove that doesn't match to the iCloud will be pulled off my phone? Like the CD my sister made with her kids singing Christmas songs?" He just said "That's right". I'm still shocked this is how they intend to have the software work. I tried late last night to turn off iTunes match, make a playlist and synch it to my phone, then turn back on iTunes Match. My playlist included every AC/DC album, every Beatles album, and my sister's CD. When I turned back on iTunes Match, now I have all the AC/DC song files on my phone and all the Beatles albums except two of the disks (they are labeled as "Excluded" in iTunes now, yet I bought the CD and burned it myself, this is not a hokey stolen off the internet file) and get this, my sister's CD is there. It clearly seems to me that Apple has not thought this one through and they have tech advisers who don't even understand the product. This seems so simple to me, let me load whatever music I want onto my phone during the cable connected synch and then let me pull additional files as I want while on the road. Have you heard about the guy who has had his whole library load from the cloud through his cellular service, he is goona love his bill when he gets it.

If it happens again the make sure that you aren't suppressing website colors.
Make sure that you allow pages to choose their colors and that you haven't enabled High Contrast in the Accessibility settings.

Feature Request: iTunes to merge the "Song Name" & "Artist" fields

This is a feature request that i would like to see in a future release of iTunes. The option to merge the "Song Name" & "Artist" fields together. This would be a very valuable option when surfing your iTunes Library thru your iPod, Front Row, or Apple TV.
Let me explain:
Not everyone knows at the top of their head who sings a particular song. This is especially true when someone other than the owner of the iTunes Library is browsing through it.
Let's say that I want to browse my ENTIRE music collection all at once. The easiest way to do this, is by browsing thru the "Songs" list because it creates 1 massive list displaying ALL the songs in the library, without having to jump into different fields. The current problem with this, is, it only lists the name of the song. There are 2 problems with this philosophy. #1 - You must know who sings the songs to have any chance of making this a useful option because the artist is not displayed. #2 - It puts them in alphabetical based on the song name. Once again, not a very useful way to make this option really functional because you will have the Artists all over the map! Keeping the Artist's songs together makes it a much more feasable option.
The solution, I feel, would be to have iTunes create an "Option" that would allow users like me to make iTunes merge the "Artist" & "Name" fields together. Make it an option so that users who do not see the benefit to this, would not have to use it. By doing this, I could now surf my ENTIRE collection via the "Songs" field in a very logical approach.
For an example, let's take a song: Artist - "Def Leppard" & Song Name - "Pour Some Sugar On Me". By clicking this option, when browsing thru the "Songs" field, it would now display as: Def Leppard - Pour Some Sugar On Me. This allows me to browse my ENTIRE library while at the same time, keeping "like" songs together, and making it very easy to distinguish whether or not it is a song I want to select. By knowing that Def Leppard is a Rock Artist, it helps to distinguish the song.
I work for a custom AV integration shop that has put hundreds of music servers into homes. We have been teaching our clients the benefits of this for some time now, with great feedback. The only problem presently, is it requires the users to have to re-edit every single file by putting the Artist's Name & the Song Title into the "Name" field of iTunes. Very time consuming! As well, because you also have the "Artists" name entered in the "Artist" field, you get Front Row displaying the "Artist" name twice, once in the song name, and once in the artist's field.
Any feedback would be welcomed.

You might be able to get where you want using Chaotic Software's MediaRage. It can automate and batch tag editing, including building a Title tag that combines Artist and Title and, to possibly address you other problem, blanking the Artist tag.
MediaRage is not expensive and it is very powerful, you can even define regexs for how to parse tags.

Trying to download specific songs

I am trying to download Kate Perry's "Fireworks" and Hendrickea Ingles's "Baby you'll like it" but for kate only the instrumental is coming up or other artists singing her song, and the second one will not come up at all when I type it in the "search" box. I have downloaded many songs and can't figure out what I am doing wrong here. Can someone help me with this?

New user and disgusting features - solveable questions?

Hello all there
I am a new iPod owner, migrated from a hateful 2 year old (now completely broken due to hate) MP3 player, and despite there are some interesting features, I have found some others that are making me considering asking my money back.
Luckily I have no problems regarding USB or other things as a lot of you have experienced, I put the CD first of all and installed everything. No problems installing anything and the device was happily detected as an extraible unit which I liked very much (my previous player appeared as a "thing" instead as a drive)
Its sound is pretty good, I like the sound I get. It's pretty customizable in terms of menus, and some other things like simplicity, despite there are things like the touchpads that I will never like and this is no exception, but this one works finer than any I have tested.
What I don't have liked up to date, and I own it for 2 days (it's november 2nd), are some ugly or very ugly (should I say very very ugly? :D) features it lacks or it's designed to lack of. I like music very much and so I want it to be played the best way a player can provide. I also want players to be simple as a plastic duck mechanism, and somehow this player fills the bill, but not in these cases I want to expose and ask.
1) 10 GB already copied and no album/artist/genre displayed
Of all my media library, consisting of a folder with subfolders and files inside these subfolders (and no 'simple icon' for any program), where I do the things I want, like extracting songs from my CDs and turning them into MP3 files inside folders with the name "Band - Album", I chose folders for a size of 10 GB and, via explorer, copied & pasted on the root of the new drive, the iPod.
No album/artist/genre/simple thing was found when I ejected the drive and started to browse.
I must say, it froze twice before and after the copy. Luckily I knew, from reading the manual, how to make it work again. I expect things to freeze, despite it only shows bad programming from the company.
But I saw the library as before I put it on for the first time. And there are 10 GB of MP3 files.
My first question I asked to myself was: should I use the iTunes? I answered myself: I can't be bothered to be slaved to use a program with a player. That's one of the things I hated from my old player. And this one appears to be a removable drive. Good. But there are 10 GB of MP3 files and I can't play any of these albums.
Somehow I used the iTunes and it started to do things. Like copying a whole folder with my albums (ALL OF THEM!!!!) to the player, or so it seemed to me. Well, first of all I don't want a program to copy everything it wants by simply saying it "This is my media folder where I decide what to be played here" (something like importing library was selected or pushed, I can't remember). I aborted it quickly as I saw the bar. FFS, to have a structured folder of my media doesn't mean I want ALL OF IT inside my player!!! How on earth you want me to select among 3,500 songs if you display them all to me in a complete raw list!!! Anyway, in the process it seemed to copy 3 albums before I stopped (needless to say, these albums were already in the player!!!). 2 were "sorted" and one was "unsorted", I mean, in the correct song order. The "unsorted" was alphabetically done according to WHATEVER so the order was never pure.
I saw folders like Contacts, Notes and so on (what do we do us that don't use Outlook or Outlook Express and want to use these features? "Brilliant" one, designers... ¬_¬ Luckily I don't care about them) so I tried creating an 'Albums' folder and putting albums inside. Same success.
So I asked myself again: are there ID3 tags needed always? The answer is simple: no. Because among these albums there are albums with and without tags. All of them unseen.
My questions thus are these regarding the unavailability issues:
Q1,1: how can I make these albums visible to the iPod?

Q1,4: will anybodoy make, at once, a choice in a menu that allows the user to NOT TO SORT THE PLAYER BY THE ID3 TAGS??? My classical sort was and is in my 'puters to sort media by folders consisting of "Name of artist - Name of album", be it single, double, triple or quadruple, and inside, files with or without tags. For more than 1 CD albums I use the same folder, with songs named "CD# song_# song title". In these cases there are no tags because the stupid song# tag forces things that uses it to sort albums according to it. In albums like "Gov't Mule - Live... With A Little Help From Our Friends (collectors edition - 4 discs)" I ended up, in my old player, with first playing the first song of each CD, then after these 4 first songs, their 2nd 4 songs, then the 3rd ones... So I wiped the ID tags and finally it was sorted well, so I was happy. Is it so hard to ask for an option like "Do not read ID tags"????????
2) Live albums
I am a fanatic of live albums. I love to listen to them more than any studio album. I have single, double, triple and quadruple live albums I could listen to for hours, and from start to finish, and enjoy them all.
I love to hear the public cheering and screaming, singing the songs, etc etc due to excitement the live albums give. My old MP3 CD player made, and a lot of car MP3 CD players make, a 2-3 seconds pause between songs. As for studio albums, but not for all of them (see Marillion's "Misplaced Childhood") show no problems, but for us that want continuity for albums like live ones, it is a disappointment.
This player puts pauses between songs.
Ok, less than 1 second pause, but I hate pauses. The feeling of the album is broken. There are silences where they shouldn't be. I ended up so excited I had to stop playing it.
Q2,1: can I correct it from the control panel of the iPod or the iTunes? If not, will it be corrected on future updates?
3) The sorting mania
From some time I have seen players sort the albums in numerous ways: by genre, album name alone, artist name, year, etc. etc. etc. So let's suppose I want to make my list, WITHOUT HAVING TO MAKE A FIXED PLAYLIST JUST BECAUSE THESE ARE THE SONGS I WANT TO LISTEN FOR TODAY OR FOR 3 DAYS AND WHO KNOWS WHAT WILL I LISTEN TO NEXT WEEK, of some albums from some different artists. Some of them are simply called "Live" (for example, Golden Earring, Johnny Winter, Foghat, but I don't want to listen to Johnny Winter).
By having sorted it by album name, they would appear as "Live". Which one belongs to who? If I go via Artist, I would have to jump as a frog from artist to artist and then browse their album list. If I go from Genre, I simply dunno because it is so mad I don't want to test it.
Q3,1: If they are sorted my way (full list of albums named in my case "Artist - album 1", "Artist - album 2", but you can sort it the way you want to), I only have to move up and down and click on "Add me this one". Is it possible or must I go the crazy way?
The package is beautiful. The player is also beautiful. Maybe I am a weird user because my demands are not expected. But I am a player user and I have my preferences. Nobody seems to care about people that want no complication. I am seriously thinking about getting my money back any way I can. How do I ad a new track to a patch and have it (all all it's parameters) appear in all patches of a given concert?

Hi there, We use MainStage 3 to play backing tracks for my daughters shows. From time to time I either have to add a tracks (like a back up vocalist who is joining her for the evening) or I have to make a change to a track that already exist in all of the patches in a given concert (Her Piano track EQ plugins as an example). How can I add a track and have it appear in every patch in the concert? and, How can I have it so that when I make a change to a given track that the change is applied to that specific track in each patch.
Let me give an example because I do not feel like I am doing a very good job at being clear. So my daughter goes to play a show. We use MainStage to play back 8 different tracks for that show (drums, Bass, Synth, ELE GTR, AC GtR, Backing vox, VOX FX, and there is a live lead Vox track). Each track is coming out of her interface and being fed into the house mixer. When we do a sound check we determine that the drum track needs to have some effects and the EQ changed to make it sound better for that specific venue. I go to the first patch (first song in the set) and I make those changes to the drum track. How can I have it be that those changes are applied to the drum track of each patch of that concert (song in the set).
Also, let's say that a guest singer decides to sit in with my daughter and the are going to sing 5 songs with her. I know how to add a vocal channel and put the needed plugins on it (EQ, Reverb and such) but how can I add it to one patch (song) and have it appear with the same parameters in each patch of the concert? It takes to long to do the same thing over on each patch.
I'm sorry for the long winded question I am just trying to be clear.

With the MultiOut Producer+ kits you have to jump through some hoops:
Convert to MIDI Regions
Move those regions to one of the Tracks inside the Stack
Then you can BIP
And get Audio
With a "Regular" Drummer Track you can just BIP regions or tracks
