Single 1.6 Fans out of control

I've been searching for a solution to the noisy fans. I've tried resetting nvram, pram, setting defaults in open firmware mode, and even resetting the PMU (it's a pre-2004 model so there's no SMU).
I'm running 10.3.9 with the latest firmware for the machine. The fans spin at full speed when I first power on the machine then the 4 case fans slow down but the hard drive fan continues at full throttle.
I've tried setting the energy saver options and powering down the mac and pulling out the power cord.
Are there any other suggestions out there?
PowerMac G5 1.6 Ghz (Single)   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   Noisy Fans!

Did you try to run Apple Hardware Test? That will tell you if it is a hardware problem.
You mention that the fans around the hard drive are running at full blast. There could be a corrupt file on your HD, causing it to cycle more rapidly than it should, and thus generating more heat.
I would try reinstalling Panther or upgrading to Tiger (I suppose now would be a good time to do so). Either way, you should do an erase and install, not an archive and install, so make sure that you backup any important files.
If all of these solutions fail for you, take it into an Apple Store for diagnosis and possible fan replacement.
Good Luck.

  • Fans out of control!

I'm having problems with my imac 24"(late 2007) fans. The problem came out just after finishing reassembling the imac, when i was disassembling the lcd panel I removed by mistake the heat sensor placed on the top.. now the CPU fan is working at 3500 rpm and there's no way to reduce the noise! The temperatures are REALLY LOW! (27-33°C for all the components). I tried to reset the ram and the CSM but it didn't work at all. The noise is really annoying.
Anyway I tried to replace it, taking away the old tape and replacing it with a thermal compound for processors, unplug the wire of the sensor but they didn't work any!
    help please!

    Hi bugs3g
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Both the Sensor and Cable must be working and connected in order for the SMC to properly control the fans. You might try your local Apple service provider or one of the parts suppliers below for any replacement parts (cable and/or sensor) that you damaged.

  • 2007 A1226 Macbook Pro: Fans out of control, will not shut down, and temp sensors have gone offline.

So my MBP, just an hour or so ago, failed to shut down.  I click Apple->Shut down, but the computer instead restarts and while loading OS X, gives me an error that says "You restarted your computer because of an error."  The fans are maxed out right now, there is -no- process causing thisl  Also, I use iStatMenus to monitor my temperatures, and all of the CPU sensors have gone offline, iStat is only reporting temps for the hard drive and battery.
iStat also seems to have lost the ability to control my fan speeds.  Uninstalling and reinstalling iStat did nothing.  Resetting PRAM and the SMC have done nothing either.  Any ideas?

Press the power button to turn on your computer.
Press and hold the D key before the gray startup screen appears. If Apple Hardware Test does not start up, see the Additional Information section at the end of this article.

  • Fan out of control

The last couple of weeks I've had a series of problems with my Powerbook G4 12" computer. For a time I was almost 90% certain that the sound was my hard drive going mental and scaring me, since I have an exam I have to write.
My computer has served as an unwanted alarm clock the last couple of weeks. I wake up and hear a loud, high pitch sound repeating itself. The first time I couldn't work out where it came from, but I soon realized that it was the Powerbook that was the cause of the problem.
(I don't know how to explain the sound, but if you turn of your computer by holding down the powerbutton, the fan will make a similar sound, just imagine the same sound louder and constantly repeating itself like an alarm). The machine just freeze and I have to restart the computer by pressing the powerbutton).
This troubled me for some time, but since it never happen when I am around (it always happen when I sleep and/or are somewhere else), I thought it would just pass. It didn't pass and today I called Apple and was told to go to the nearest Apple Center, so I did. I told him what the problem was and we discussed it a litte, I said I would come back if it happened again and that I would give him the computer as soon as I finished my exam.
I came back home and turned my computer back on. I don't think I've ever been as frightened as I was then. The computer made a sound like it was going to blow up, or atleast that's what sprung to my mind. It was like someone was putting something in the fan making it struggle and it sounded like the fan was just going to blow up.
The sound lasted for about 20 seconds (don't ask me why I didn't turn it off, I guess I was shocked) and then it disappeared.
So where am I going with all this? Does anyone know what the problem could be? Should I turn my computer in to Apple and let them fix it, or should I assume that everything will fix itself.
Sorry for the length, but I felt I had to explain as much as possible, and I'm sorry for my lack of english skills, english is not my primary language.
(And while I'm asking, does anyone else have a bump over their CD-slot? I've had the bump since I got my computer August 2005 and two of my friends also have the same bump, but I also have two friends that don't have the same bump, and it doesn't look like a part of the design.)
    PowerBook G4 12"   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Can that wire get disconnected while the Mini is sitting quietly on the table? I didnt lift it or anything.
It would be highly unlikely...unless you had additional memory added. Like I said, it was the only other thing I could think of.
Can I reconnect the wire myself, if that is indeed the problem, wont it brake the gaurantee?
Just opening your Mini's case would not necessarily "break" your warranty, but breaking anything while doing so would not be covered. When it comes to warranty issues, it's always best to have Apple or an Apple-authorized shop do the repairs.
And to my surprise and worry, it took about 10 mins for the Mini to startup and it was running extremely slow.
From what you are describing, your Mini really needs to be looked at. I realize you're not excited by having to send it away for repairs, but since you have already done most of the troubleshooting steps (SMC reset, PRAM, etc.), it may be the only recourse you have left...before it really breaks.
As a last ditch effort, you can try running the TechTool Deluxe battery of tests, that came with your AppleCare CD (if you have AppleCare, of course) to see if it discovers anything amiss.

  • IMac 20" G5 (gen1) with out of control fans

My iMac's fans are running at speeds that are driving me and my office mate completely out of our minds. Currently, terminal reports:
    "location" = "System Fan" | | | | "target-value" = 1240 | | | | "location" = "CPU fan"
    | | | | "target-value" = 4343
    | | | "location" = "Hard Drive"
    | | | "target-value" = 1800
    | | | "location" = "sysclk slew"
    | | | "target-value" = 1
The CPU is running at an average load of 26.1% and is at 144.3 degrees, with no out of control processes, and the hard drive is at 125.6 degrees. That's with only 5 applications running.
I'm running OS 10.4.3 and the iMac has 2 gigs of RAM. I've run the Apple Hardware Test disk, which reported no problems, and have run an overnight memory test, which also reported no problems and have reverted back to the Apple supplied memory with no positive effect.
    I've also (several times):
    • reset the SMU (PMU for older Mac fans)
    • cleared the PRAM
    • run disk utility
    • repaired the permissions
    • done a clean software install
Nothing has worked. This is all on a computer whose firewire didn't work out of the box and which I repaired with a refurbed motherboard when it was less than a week old. Nothing like buying a new machine and getting a refurbished one to start you off on the right foot.
Now I'm trying to get this computer, which is under warranty, repaired but can't even find a number that I can call where I won't get charged! I live in Maine, so taking it to an Apple Store, or even a convenient service center is out of the question. Can someone advise?
This has been, without a doubt, my most disappointing Apple experience ever (and I owned a Mac Portable!)

    Timothy,
I'm certainly open to another member's disagreement on this, but It appears to me that you have done everything necessary to disqualify software as the cause of your fan issue.
In that case, it's probably worth it to you to go ahead and give Apple your credit card to enable phone support for this issue, as it appears likely to be hardware related, which will cost you nothing (they should only charge you if it turns out to be a software issue.
Phone support will go down a list of things that you need to do to disqualify software, all of which, I believe, you've already tried. The only risk would be if phone support comes up with a software fix that no one on this board thinks to recommend to you. However, on the bright side, if no one on here can come up with another idea to try, and phone support has one that does work, it's going to be worth the cost, what is it - $75, I think?
I suppose your alternatives would be to:
    1. buy some books or an AppleCare repair course and become an expert,
    or
    2. buy AppleCare and get free phone support back for both software and hardware for another two+ years, as well as valuable rights to in-home repairs.
If you have seen your iMac run well at times, and can see keeping it, AppleCare at $169 could be a bargain for what you might get out of it in phone support alone, not to mention another expensive part replacement a year from now. Furthermore, there are times it can be found at a lower price on eBay, usually a bit under $100 delivered. I have bought several, for this one I'm using, for a 17" that I sold, plus as a gift for a relative's iMac.
    Best of luck.

  • MacBook Air is laggy and the fan is out of control

My MacBook Air 2013 is laggy and the fan is out of control. The fan is out of control even when I start my macbook up. I don't know if it has something to do with Yosemite or something else. I have tried SMC restarting, and nothing has changed. I would really love to hear if anyone else is having this problem, and I would love to hear if any of you have any tips. Also I checked if anything is using up my CPU a bunch, and nothing is out of the ordinary.

The kernel is using excessive processor cycles. Below are some possible causes for the condition.
    Throttling
When it gets high temperature readings from the hardware, or low voltage readings from the battery of a MacBook, the kernel may try to compensate by interrupting the processor(s) to slow them down and reduce power consumption. This condition can be due to:
☞ a buildup of dust on the logic board
    ☞ high ambient temperature
    ☞ a worn-out or faulty battery in a portable
☞ the malfunction of a cooling fan, a temperature sensor, a voltage sensor, or some other internal component
Note that if the problem is caused by a sensor, there may be no actual overheating or undervoltage.
If the computer is portable, test with and without the AC adapter connected. If kernel_task hogs the processor only on AC power, charging is causing the machine to heat up. That behavior may be normal for some models. CPU usage should drop when charging is complete.
Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test, though not very reliable, is sometimes able to detect a fault. For more thorough hardware testing, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
If nothing is wrong with the hardware, then whatever you can do to improve cooling may help.
    Installed software
User-installed software that includes a device driver or other kernel code may thrash the kernel. That category includes virtualization software, such as Parallels and VMware, as well as most commercial "anti-virus" products. Some system-monitoring applications, such as "iStat," can also contribute to the problem. You can test for this possibility by completely disabling or removing the software according to the developer's instructions, or starting in safe mode. Note, however, that disabling a system modification without removing it or testing in safe mode may not be as easy as you think.
    Corrupt NVRAM or SMC data
Sometimes the problem is cleared up by resetting the NVRAM or the SMC.
    External display
Connecting an external LCD display to some MacBook Pro models while the lid is open may cause this issue. If applicable, test by closing the lid or disconnecting the display. You might get better results with a newer LED display.

My batteri isnt charging (its dead, can make it without AC for 3min) and after 2 min of using the computer the fan goes from 1500rpm to 6200rpm. Ist because the batteri isnt working as i should or is the problem something else that make the fan go out of control?

  • Warcraft and out-of-control fans?

My 13-year old son spends a lot of time on our iMac 5 playing World-of-Warcraft—too much in fact, but that's another issue.
Anyway, I've noticed that sometimes I'll walk into the room when he's playing and the iMac sounds like it's going to take off. In the past, the only way I could fix the out-of-control fans was to completely reinstall Mac OS X—a little extreme I know. I suspect that Warcraft is corrupting something—perhaps the PRAM, NVRAM, or something else. I know how to reset the PRAM, but I think resetting the NVRAM involves using the Terminal and I can'y find the instructions on how to do that.
Does anyone know what causes this and how it can be fixed. Other than this problem, our iMac runs great! Here are the system specs:
    iMac G5 20" 2GHz
    1 GB DDR SDRAM
    Mac OS 10.4.8
    250 GB HD (195.35 available)

  • Yosemite memory out of control?

Upgraded to Yosemite on MacBook Pro -- memory of kernel_task runs out of control (>6GB) in approx 48 hours after using -- initially did a clean install of Yosemite, and only loaded apps that are needed.
Etrecheck reports the following with many process having to be killed due to me pressure.
Any ideas what is triggering the men usage and eventual swap to death of the Retina?
kernel_task is at 6.8GB RAM although etrecheck doesn't report it, 1.1 GB of swap according to iStat in addition

One of the above kernel extensions is running wild.  All of these, when loaded are part of kernel_task.
With 16GB or RAM, your kernel_task should be hovering around 1GB (plus or minus).  My 16GB Macbook Pro has a 1.25GB kernel_task.
You can experiment by booting into Safe Mode, which will not load any of the 3rd party additions, and you can see if your kernel_task remains stable

  • Fan Out Ratio with 674

I am working on a WAAS/WAFS solution for a customer with 100-150 remote sites. All sites are single homed with 1.5Mbps T1 connections to an MPLS WAN. The customer will be using WCCPv2 for redirection to the WAE.
The current plan is to provide dual 674 at each of 2 data centers. I have a couple questions with this design.
    1. For redundancy purposes, can a WAE be a member of more than one core cluster. Could the remote edge device have one edge to core cluster at DC1 and one core-to-edge connection to DC2?
    2. How many fan out peers for DRE does the 674 support? How many CIFS fan out peers does it support? Is a CIFS peer or DRE peer the same from a fan out planning ratio?
    3. Is there an updated WAFS/WAAS sizing tool out yet that reflects the capacity limits of the 674 and 7371 models?
    Thanks in advance
    Mike Louis

    Mike,
    1. A WAE can be members of multiple core clusters. In the 4.0.x code, they will have 4050 connections to all the cores they are paired with.
    2. The 674-4 is rated 100 peers, the 674-8 is rated 200 peers. This platform is being positioned for the virtual blade features in 4.1 and maintaining roughly the same performance as the 612.
    3. I have seen this internally, however I would talk to your Cisco Sales team to get the official external version.
    Thanks,
    Dan

  • RM-30410: Warning: Single Record property ignored for non-control block

    Hi gurus,
I have one block, as oracle default behavious is that when any user enters record and during that if he/she hits down arrow key then it gets to next new record, i want to prevent this behaviour.
In other words i want that user should not enter second record and if he or she needs to enter second record after saving first then user can only do if he navigate to the form second time.
In property pallete i put yes to single record but when i compile the form it gives me following warning
FRM-30410: Warning: Single Record property ignored for non-control block Employees
Created form file C:\my_forms\employees.fmxPlease seeks help that how can i sort it out.
    Thank you
    Hina

if he/she hits down arrow key then it gets to next new record, i want to prevent this behaviour. Change the block's key-down and/or key-nxtrec trigger to
    begin
      null;
end;(or give the user a message "Key not allowed here").

  • How to create fan-out pattern solution in alsb (osb)

    Hello guys,
I'm trying to create a fan-out pattern solution in ALSB in which I have one proxy service for incoming messages and two outbound business services. All messages are to be forwarded to both business services simultaneous but independent from each other, so whenever business service 1 fails messages are still delivered to business service 2. Like in the following situation:
messages ---> proxy service ---> routing table:
all messages  ---->  business service 1
all messages  ---->  business service 2However, when I am trying to use the routing table to define the routing, I am not able to route messages to both business services. In the ALSB console I am obliged to define an IF..THEN..ELSE routing rules. IF condition THEN call BS1 ELSE call BS2.
Can anyone give me a hint how to solve this problem, pls?
    Thanks in advance,
    Harm

    Thanks for the swift reply.
Can you please elaborate on the expression to use in solution 1? My first solution was similar except I used a routing table without a pipe line instead of a publish table. The cases in the publish table look similar to the cases in a routing table. The difficulty I'm having is that I don't have/want(?) to switch between cases in order to choose the end-point as all end-points must be invoked in each case.
This is the expression I'm using in the routing/publish table:
    Publish Table ( boolean($body/mynamespace:myrootnode) )
       Case = true()
Publish to BS1 invoking operation bladibla
       Case = true()
Publish to BS2 invoking operation tralalaIn words, if the incoming message has a body then route to BS1 and BS2. But this "solution" only invokes BS1, never BS2.
For the second solution, suppose the first service callout hits an error (time-out, remote server down, network failure, etc), is the second service callout still being invoked succesfully or does the whole pipe line stack fail?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Safari Spinning Out of Control - Why Doesn't This Get Better?!!

For a very extended period, Safari has been spinnin out of control memory-wise - no other OS I use does this, not does any other browser I use on OSX.  This goes on and on and on and on, with no real remidiation coming from Apple.  It is maddening and ruiining the usability of using the MAC and OSX.  It may be due to Flash, or Flash and Apple's refusal to properly work with Adobe - Flash is out there - it is on a huge number of websites and not just for entertainment - it cannot be avoided - also transactional sites such as StubHub use it.  If I have ten or fifteen web pages open, Safari, between Safari Web Content, Safari and Flash, can take three or four gigabytes or even more, and Flash is the least of them.  It does not happen with Firefox.  With Safari spinning out of control, the entire device slows down.  This has been going on for far far far too long.  It happen on my MacBook and my iMac.  When is this going to get resolved?  I am starting to despise using the Mac and OSX.

  • Safari out of control in yosemite

Ever since updating imac, the Safari browser is out of control.  The advertisements are overwhelming and a new tab constantly opens for  mackeeper or other ads.  I am also getting a series of adobe flash player errors saying to change settings to 32-bit mode.  Not sure what to do.

There is no need to download anything to solve this problem.
You may have installed the "Downlite" or "VSearch" ad-injection malware. Follow the instructions on this Apple Support page to remove it.
Back up all data before making any changes.
Besides the files listed in the support article, you may also need to remove this item in the same way:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ConduitNPAPIPlugin.plugin
One of the steps in the article is to remove malicious Safari extensions. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those. If Safari crashes on launch, skip that step and come back to it after you've done everything else.
If you don't find any of the files or extensions listed, or if removing them doesn't stop the ad injection, then you may have one of the other kinds of adware covered by the support article. Follow the rest of the instructions in the article.
The problem may have started when you downloaded and ran an application called "MPlayerX." That's the name of a legitimate free movie player, but the name is also used fraudulently to distribute VSearch. If there is an item with that name in the Applications folder, delete it, and if you wish, replace it with the genuine article from mplayerx.org.
This malware is often found on illegal websites that traffic in pirated content such as movies. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow. Never install any software that you downloaded from a bittorrent, or that was downloaded by someone else from an unknown source.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere  should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates
    if it's not already checked.

  • Out of control thermocouples

Hey, I've got a weird problem and I'm hoping someone can help. I've been using a program for about 6 months now that basically maintains a cold temperature at one side of a heat sink, and maintains a hot temperature at the other side.  Then I have 25 thermocouples hooked up in between to measure temperatures so I can do analysis on the material in the middle.  My problem is that all of a sudden the thermocouple readings have been out of control and unpredictable.  I was adding automation to the program so it could run multiple tests at once and in the process this problem developed.  The strange part is that the problem is also happening in the old version of the program now too, and that has been working perfectly for the last 6 months.  I have 25 thermocouples hooked up and the temperatures will all look about right, but then 3 to 5 of them will be completely wrong randomly.  What's interesting about this problem is that when I change the thermocouple that the heaters use to maintain the set point temperature, the values that were wrong become right again and some of the other thermocouples start giving invalid data.  The setup uses one NI 9213 and 3 NI 9211 inputs for the thermocouples.  It also uses a NI 9401 to control the heaters through a pulse width modulation electric box we have.  Anyone ever experience something like this or have any ideas?  Thanks for any help
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hello acolbourn,
Have you tried hooking the thermocouples that were giving you bad data back into another port that you were previously getting good data with. This will help you figure out if the problem is the thermocouples or the card inputs. Since you said the issues were fixed by replacing the thermocouples, that makes me think the issue is the thermocouples...but I would still trying plugging the "bad" thermocouples into another port just to see if you still get bad data.
How do you have your code setup to read the signal? Do you have multiple tasks reading from the different cards, or do you have one task with all the inputs on it? I noticed you are only reading one sample at a time, you may want to try reading multiple samples so that you have a buffer and are less likely to get that error. Also, if you were in highlight execution, then this error would have happened because of the how much highlight execution slows down the program, and not because of an issue with the code. When you debug with DAQmx, data overwrite errors are common. This is mainly because most debugging involves slowing down the execution to see what's going on, but slowing down the execution causes timed events to not function correctly, so this may be the cause of the -200279 error.
    I hope this helps!
