Single app mode with VPP Token Managed Distribution apps?

For some reason, single app mode setting in Profile Manager will only pick up apps that have been purchased by the device/user Apple ID I.e. individuals personally purchased apps, it will not allow single app mode on pushed apps via VPP Token Managed distribution.
My questions are:
1) should it be possible to single app mode, after all MD is to help organisations 'manage' the devices? If so, what am I doing wrong?
2) is it ethical that I can see users 'personally' purchased apps when MDM allows for 'dual' managed devices
Any help would be most appreciated.

I've used iCab.  I've not used iCab's Kiosker mode.

As you can see, I'm still able to connect with sqlcmd prompt to SQL Server. According production doc of SQL Server 2014, it should not be conncting by sqlcmd. it shall only be connected by SSMS.

Start SQL Server in Single-User Mode
    Provide Feedback
Under certain circumstances, you may have to start an instance of SQL Server
in single-user mode by using the startup option -m. For
example, you may want to change server configuration options or recover a
damaged master database or other system database. Both actions require starting
an instance of SQL Server in single-user mode.
Starting SQL Server in single-user mode enables any member of the computer's
local Administrators group to connect to the instance of SQL Server as a member
of the sysadmin fixed server role. For more information, see Connect to
SQL Server When System Administrators Are Locked
    Out.
When you start an instance of SQL Server in single-user mode, note the
    following:
Only one user can connect to the server.
The CHECKPOINT process is not executed. By default, it is executed
    automatically at startup.
    Note
Stop the SQL Server Agent service before connecting to an instance of SQL
Server in single-user mode; otherwise, the SQL Server Agent service uses the
    connection, thereby blocking it.
When you start an instance of SQL Server in single-user mode, SQL Server
Management Studio can connect to SQL Server. Object Explorer in Management
Studio might fail because it requires more than one connection for some
operations. To manage SQL Server in single-user mode, execute Transact-SQL
statements by connecting only through the Query Editor in Management Studio, or
    use the
    sqlcmd utility.
When you use the -m option with sqlcmd or
Management Studio, you can limit the connections to a specified client
application. For example, -m"sqlcmd" limits connections to a
single connection and that connection must identify itself as the
sqlcmd client program. Use this option when you are starting
SQL Server in single-user mode and an unknown client application is taking the
only available connection. To connect through the Query Editor in Management
Studio, use -m"Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio - Query".

    Hi Shawn Xiao,
For starting SQL Server instance in single user mode, we can add –m; parameter in SQL Server Configuration Manager, also we can run CMD with ‘Run as administrator’ and input the following statement.
    NET START MSSQLSERVER /m
I do a test in SQL Server 2014 Express version, after starting SQL with Single User Mode, SQL Server will only accept one connection. If you connect to SQL Server with a user account, the following error will occur.
Login failed for user ‘domain\username’. Reason: Server is in single user mode. Only one administrator can connect at this time.
However, in your situation, you can connect to SQL Server and run T-SQL statement successfully, it can be due to connection with the administrator account in your sqlcmd.

  • VPP revert Managed Distribution to Redeemable code

    hello all,
When using VPP is it possible to change a application purchased using Managed Distribution to a Redeemable Code?
Wrong button selected in the purchase of apps using a VPP account.
    Thanks in advance
    jon

I had this happen once as well.  There's no way to convert them without contacting Apple.  I spent a large amount of time calling and emailing VPP support before I got a response but they finally changed it and sent out the Redeemable Codes and cancelled the Managed Distribution.  Call up VPP support and they'll get it changed for you.

  • Does apple provide app developers with servers when publishing an app on their App Store?

I want to develpo apps for mobile devices for Apple's App Store and I was just wondering if I had to have my own servers to launch the app or if Apple provides an app developer with servers. I thought they did since they charge you 99$ a year and take 30% of earnings.

Apple supplies the infrastructur for app distribution, update management and payment handling using the App Store that runs on their servers, as mentioned above.
Depending on your application you may also be able to use GameCenter or iCloud (which run on Apple servers) to support certain app features/functionality without having to run or pay for your own servers.
Depending on your needs there may also be other (non-Apple) webservices, that may reduce the amount of work that you'll need to spend, to setup and maintain your servers.

  • •2.20: Developers "spamming" the App Store with many versions of similar Apps will be removed from the iOS Developer Program

    Hi support
My App has been rejected by Apple App store and the reject code is 2.20 details as below:
"We found that your app provides the same feature set as other apps you've submitted to the App Store; it only varies the content or language."
App review team suggested "It would be appropriate to consolidate all issues of the same magazine/publication into 1 container app"
I was wondering how i am going to make all the same magazine into i container app?
    thanks in advance.

You need a Professional or Enterprise DPS license. Then you you can make a multi-folio app. A multi-folio app would be the container for all of your magazine folios.

  • Major Issue: VPP Managed Distribution & Apple IDs with no credit cards

Hopefully someone from Apple can advise on a temporary workaround for this issue, or when the problem will be resolved. If anyone else has experienced this issue with Managed Distribution using the VPP Token, and has a workaround, I'd be very grateful.
    My set-up
OS X Server running on Mavericks, MacBook Pro
Using managed distribution via Profile Manager with the new VPP Token, I am successfully able to push FREE apps to my staff and students. However, problems occur when pushing paid apps. If I try to push a paid app to a staff Apple ID it's fine, because most of the staff have credit cards on file. The issue arises when pushing paid apps to student Apple IDs with no credit card.
This is a real issue, because we have purchased the app already, and technically it is 'free' to whomever we push the app to in our organisation. What has also happened is when apps have gone 'free' (promotions etc) we have been able to 'buy' them at their free 'price' via VPP, but when trying to distribute them using Managed Distribution (the only option available for free apps) it classes them as 'paid' and requires a credit card be attached to the Apple ID also.
Managed Distribution for our organisation, seemed to be the perfect solution, in that we could keep track of which members of staff and students had which apps and also have the ability to revoke them. Unfortunately because of the requirement for credit cards for VPP enrolled Apple IDs I am unable to distribute any paid or 'gone free' apps.
I imagine that as more organisations turn to Managed Distribution using the token, as it is still only early days at the moment, more and more people will realise that it is not possible. I suspect many people will be yet to test it out, but for the moment it doesn't work :-(

Hey there MrsStephenson. I was just getting on here to post a similar question regarding the new Managed Distribution. We are experiencing a similar issue with Paid App Distribution but even if we add a card to the Apple ID we are trying to push to it still doesn't work. I am glad to hear we are not the only ones out there with issues regarding Managed Distribution so far as I know the more folks running into problem the more traction this will get.
I have tried so many different methods of setting up devices and I just can't get it to work. Oddly enough about a week and a half ago it started working for about an hour or so on one of my devices I was testing with (iPad Mini Retina WIFI) but then quit working shortly later when I got out and iPad Air and tried again.
I have been working with AppleCare Enterprise Support/EDU Support but so far they have not divulged much information to me. Just about the only bit of information I have received from them is as of right now they don't have any work arounds but they have had a few more of this type of problem popping up.
It was odd in that when I first got my licenses and started implementing devices it was working fine. Then, out of the blue the apps stopped automatically downloading to the devices and I had to start selecting the Push Apps option in Profile Manager to get it to work. Then eventually it quit working all together and now only free apps will install.
I hope more people start reporting/coming forward with this issue as I know that should help expedite Apple to come up with a solution. I have about 20 iPads sitting in my cabinet that people are waiting for out in our shop and I can't do anything with them until I can distribute the apps to them.

  • Profile Manager cannot set ibooks as single app mode in iOS

Right now I had updated all my iPad to iOS 8.0.2, and the server is updated to the newest version, too.
Sadly, When I want to setup the iPad to single app mode with iBooks, I cannot find it in the list.
Is this means ibooks is no long support on the single app mode? Then why give us the new function about push ibooks?
I have try the assistant function on my iPhone (8.0.2) itself, it can be locked in iBooks.
Any one can tell me what is the problem?
    Many many thanks!

    HI Hines,
I had the same problems after the 3.0.2 update: enrolling of devices not working, unable to push configurations from Profile Manager, etc.
The update was a simple 3.0.1 => 3.0.2 on already updated OSX Mavericks to 10.9.1 and it seemed that all was ok, not like this situation: https://discussions.apple.com/message/24450438
    Services used:
    -Web
-Profile Manager with 20 iPads/iPhones already enrolled and with some in-house app pushed
I followed a solution similar to what suggested from Hines, apart from point #6. I was unable to re-download Server.app from App Store, greyed-out button.
So I was very happy to have another mac to download a fresh copy of Server.app.
    Then:
-Deleted and thrashed the old version
    -Message "all services stopped"
    -Reboot
    -Copied fresh "Server.app" to /Applications
-Started "Server.app" that made some initial auto configuration
    -Services restarted
I just had to restart the postgres service and seems that I didn't lost any data/config (I hope, I'm already checking!)

I know that Apple is essentially an hardware manufacter manly for consumer target now but that a simple minor update broke an entire software meant to be solid, like a server must be, is just plain unacceptable.
I know that OSX Server is very cheap and we can't pretend too much....but F**K...i loosed my sleep tonight!

  • Moving VPP Managed Distribution from one MDM to another

Currently we have a few VPP accounts in Meraki using Managed Distribution.  We are adding a few more VPP accounts and are looking to move to Profile Manager as our MDM.  Is it possible to move the VPP accounts and managed distribution apps from Meraki and into Profile Manager, or are they stuck in Meraki once I started using that.

I recommend checking with VPP support https://ssl.apple.com/support/itunes/vpp-edu/. They'll respond within a few hours.
    Hope this helps!

  • IMac 7,1 boot only in single user mode

    Hi all
I've a colleague with the following problem... his iMac 20'' (iMac7,1) is able to boot ONLY in safe/single user mode (with shift key pressed during boot).
If he tries to boot normally, after the usual Apple logo screen he gets a blank (light grey) screen. No finder, no login screen.
    We've tried this procedures:
    - SMB reset
    - PRAM cleared
    - OS Reinstall (we've tried from Lion to Mavericks... actually there's 10.7.5 installed)... note that ALL installation procedure has completed successfully.
    - tested the 1 RAM module installed (seems to be OK)
    - tested the HD (no problems found)
Despite all these attempts, this iMac is booting well only if we press SHIFT during startup. All programs run well, wifi is working and online update too. If we reboot leaving it to restart normally (no key pressed) it shows Apple Logo for 1 minutes, then (after a black reset of the screen) seems to crash/stuck into an empty grey screen.
Is possible to identify which driver/kext is causing this problem? It can be an hardware problem? How we can fix it?
    Thank you!

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Single user mode locks up hard

Is anyone else having this type of problem? I had it with both Panther and now also with Tiger. I've filed a bug on this with apple, but they closed it citing the usual "you have third party ram" argument. The ram has zero issues with anything else and I've done some very extensive testing of it (running remember for 72+ hours without a single fault).
Basically what happens is within 2 seconds of getting the root shell prompt in single user mode it locks up. By lock up I mean that the keyboard is locked out and no method of input works. Funny enough if there was a key pressed down when this happens the key keeps repeating, even if I unplug the keyboard.
This machine seems to be kind of haunted (have other problems with it as well, all registered with Apple) but I can't get them to replace it.
Just looking to see if I'm the only one with this problem or not ....
    TIA

Are you using a Bluetooth keyboard? Some people have reported being unable to type in Single User mode with a Bluetooth keyboard, even though everything else works normally.

  • Back up files through Single user mode

    Hello there,
it seems that I have problem with my hard drive. I tried to repair it with disk utility and the fsck command in Single user mode with no luck. The fsck command gives me the "Exited with signal 8" message and it won't start up the usual way or under Safe boot so I came to the conclusion to back up my files on an external drive and reinstall the system. I need step by step instructions how to back up the entire hard drive onto the external drive in Single User mode.

Do you have another mac with firewire?
    Try target disk mode.
If you have a second Mac computer, you may want to try to copy over as many files you can. One way is to use target disk mode.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
    http://lowendmac.com/misc/06/0710.html
This requires you to use your installation disk. With errors from fdsk, I do not think you will be able to copy all directories. I used a flash drive. A harddrive should be the same. To copy everything, use the directory /Volumes/Macintosh-HD
You may try to recover your data by booting up an installation cd/dvd and using the terminal.
You could try getting into the Unix command line interface and copy some files or directories.
You can copy files on the Unix command line interface if you placed the flash drive the USB port before powering on your machine.
Boot up your installation CD or DVD. To do this, place to the CD or DVD its drive. Power off the the machine. Hold down the c key then power on your machine. After you specify the language you will come to the installation panel. Do not install. Go to the top of the screen and click on the tools menu item. Click on Terminal to use the command line interface.
You should verify that the files have been copied correctly by trying them in another Mac before it the deleting the original.
*Here is an overview of the commands.*
Lets assume that the problem account has a short user name of mac.
    #Copy directory "/Applications/Applescript files" to
    # directory "/Volumes/Spotless/Applescript files".
    # "Spotless" is my flash drive.
    ditto -X -rsrc /Applications/Applescript\ files /Volumes/Spotless/Applescript\ files
    #cd is change directory
    cd /Volumes/COPYIT/answers/
    # pwd is print working directory
    pwd
#the ls command is for list
    # l is long
    # a to show hidden files. not shown in this example.
    # F is type of file where / is directory
sh-2.05b# # Please note ls is the list command. l is a lower case L
    sh-2.05b# ls -lF
Here is what these commands mean:
    cd is change directory
pwd is a print working directory
    ls is list
    sudo is Super user do
    # The sudo command will ask for your administration password. No characters will appear when typing your password. Press return when done typing.
    cp is copy
    copy a file example:
    sh-2.05b#
    sh-2.05b# cd /Volumes/Macintosh-HD/Users/mac/desktop
    sh-2.05b# pwd
    /Volumes/Macintosh-HD/Users/mac/desktop
    sh-2.05b# cp -i answers.txt /Volumes/SpotMore
Will copy the file answers.txt in the directory SpotMore.
Some files have a space in the name. You need to escape. see example:
    mac $ ls -l ~/"see it"
    -rw-r--r-- 1 mac staff 3171 Oct 26 23:38 /Users/mac/see it
    mac $
    mac $ cd /Users/mac/Desktop/ttt\ html\ copy/
Do you know about tabing? Type in a few letters of a name then press the tab key. The computer will type out the rest of the name if it is unique.
The up arrow key will retrive the previous command. You the left arror and right arror keys to move around. Use the delete key to delete a character to the left.

    Hi all ,
I need some help please :
I can read/write to my USB disks when i'm in muti-user mode but when to I swith to single-user mode ( init S ), I cannot mount it.
in Single-user mode , i started volume management daemon :
    #/etc/init.d/volgmt start
    #volcheck
but i'm still not able to mount it.
    I tried to mount manually:
    #mount /dev/dsk/c2t0d0p0 /testpoint , i have this error: < mount : not a UFS magic number ( 0x0) , dev/dsk/c2t0d0p0 is not of this fstype.
My system recognizes the USB device though in single-user mode:
This is an output of #iostat -En

    Hi ,
thanks for your advice. My problem is resolved.
The USB drive was actually a FAT filesystem.
so I did # mount -F pcfs /dev/dsk/c2t0d0p0:c /testpoint and everything went fine
I can read/write to my USB disks when i'm in
muti-user mode but when to I swith to single-user
    mode ( init S ), I cannot mount it.
in Single-user mode , i started volume management
    daemon :
    /etc/init.d/volgmt start
    #volcheck
but i'm still not able to mount it.It probably requires other items to be started
    first.
    I tried to mount manually:
    #mount /dev/dsk/c2t0d0p0 /testpoint , i have
    this
    error: < mount : not a UFS magic number ( 0x0) ,
dev/dsk/c2t0d0p0 is not of this fstype.
Looks like it's assuming UFS. If this is a pcfs
filesystem, give it the type on the mount line.
    # mount -F pcfs /dev/dsk/c2t0d0p0 /testpointYeah, this was the right command, I had to specify option < -F pcfs >.
but I read somethere on this forum i had to specify :c as the drive for FAT at the end of c2t0d0p0 , so the full command was:
    # mount -F pcfs /dev/dsk/c2t0d0p0:c /testpoint

    DarrenThanks,

  • Restarts in single user mode since install

    Hi,
I've only seen this problem on one of my computers. Since installing SL (from family disk), when restarting or starting from full shut down, the MBAir starts in Single User mode with command lines. I actually think it showed the GUI for about 2 seconds then goes into the command line text. Shows a bunch of the usual stuff about MAC framework initiations and lines about kernel dependency. I don't see any error lines repeated (but I do not understand much of the code) and it does not offer me a prompt. After about 1 minute, it launches the OS X gui and everything else is fine.
I updated the 10.6.1 - same problem persists.
So far I've verified, repaired some permission, PRAM, and tech tools basic. Do I need to do some deeper investigating? Any ideas?
    Thanks
    bc

Will do. Do you mean re-choose the start up disk from the sys pref? Why might it search for another start up disk?
resetting PRAM clears the startup disk settings.
