Single drum sound

Hi,
I'm new to Garage Band and am having some trouble. I'm am trying to create a simple rhythm, in 3/4 time, C major, and 108 bpm. The only instrument I want is a snare drum. I add a software instrument track and select Drum kits > Rock kit. I put all of my notes, for the snare drum, on line C5. When I play the notes, it does not sound like any percussion instrument at all, and instead like a police whistle. When I change the pitch, it makes a sound from a different object, some of them percussion instruments. When I go to the Rock Kit "Details" and turn on the "Visual EQ" (I'm not sure what this is), I can put it to either "Drums More Snare" or "snare." Neither of these help. Is there a specific pitch (note or line) that I should move my notes to in order to get a snare drum and how can I know which pitch each instrument is located on? I hope this all makes sense and that you can help me.
Thanks.

The snare is on the D1 note, if I remember right. The equalizer is just for modifying the sound of an audio file, it doesn't change the instrument.

  • What is the best way to use single shot drum sounds?

I have a huge collection of wav. format single sound drum sounds that I use in FL Studio. What is the best way to program drums in GB using them besides buying iDrum? I like the flexibility of using drums from different kits when I make my music so I kind of get board using a preset drum kit from GB even layering 3-4 kits isn't as nice as choosing each individual drum sound.

Would be great to have more info but on a 24fps timeline with 24fps footage, you can simply right click and change the speed/duration to whatever. It'll be more jittery than smooth 60fps slow-mo. If your footage is shot at 60fps and you are editing on a 24fps timeline, just select the clip and right-click and choose MODIFY>Interpret footage and change the fps to 23.976 and you're done. Now when you drop that clip on the timeline it's in smooth slow-mo. Or, you can just toss the original clip on the timeline and change the speed/duration setting to 40%. Pretty much the same thing although the former is better if you need to add any warp stabilization to the clip. Anything you want to speed back up you can either duplicate the clip in the project panel and change it back to the original frame rate OR you can simply adjust it on the timeline to 250% speed which is back to normal. Good luck!

  • Can I use an external Drum Machine with the drum sounds in Express?

New to Logic Express and Midi. Can I create drum track patterns and whole songs using an external drum machine and the drum sounds in Logic Express? I'm sure I can, but I have no clue as to how. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

  • I have a drum sound on my mac

My Mac randomly plays a repeating drum sound...as if a key is held down in error.....It comes on when the machine is not in use - or even sleeping.  If I unplug the keyborad, it stops, but will come back again later.  I've taken to shutting the machine down altogether to avoid.  Could this be a virus?  Any ideas/things that I sould do to investigate?
Thanks in advance for your help....

Does the display remain black during the entire episode? If it doesn't, then I suggest opening the Language & Text Sytem Preferences then click on the Input Sources button. Once open, turn ON the 'Keyboard & Character Viewer' option which make it possible for you to view a virtual keyboard on the display. The next time the issue occurs watch the virtual keyboard to see whether a particular key is highlighted indicating that the key is being activated. If it's consistently the same key then you likely have a keyboard problem. If the key is random then there may be some other sort of software issue. Please report your findings so that we can provide additional assistance.
Enable Keyboard Viewer in Language & Text System Preferences
View Keyboard Viewer on screen by pulling down the flag in the upper right corner of the menu bar and then select 'Show Keyboard Viewer'.
You will see a visual representation of your keyboard. In this example I have the USB keyboard. Each time a key is pressed the keycap will darken for as long as the key is pressed.

  • Best way to load a bunch of drum sounds?

Hey, all - In the course of getting rid of some older equipment, I've preserved a bunch of drum sounds that I want to continue using; I've recorded them and edited them into separate audio files (about 250). I'll be triggering them from a percussion controller (TriggerFinger).
My question is, am I better off loading them into EXS24 or Ultrabeat? It seems like each has pros and cons - Ultrabeat makes it easier to futz with the samples, and to create little beat patterns, but EXS24 seems more flexible in terms of arranging, layering, and (this may be a big factor) importing many files at once.
Anyone have suggestions on reasons to go one way or the other? Many thanks in advance!

I think you have answered your own question, to be honest and have to weigh your desired outcome against the features and benefits of each unit. Speaking personally however, I have often used the EXS24 for the layered drums as I have a greater degree of control between the various groups and also makes it easier to layer more than one sample at a time.
I often use Ultrabeat when I want it to have more of a drum machine type of feel, where the samples are use to convey that type of feel.
However, that's me (and others will probably have different ideas).

  • Ultrabeat:  Swapping drum sounds causes samples to get lost

    Hello,
According to the Logic Studio Instruments and Effects manual on page 558, you should be able to swap drum sounds in ultrabeat by dragging and dropping one onto another. However, when I do this, both the source and destination cells have no sample loaded anymore. I also tried to swap via menu and clipboard copy, but got the same result.
Is this a known bug? Has anyone else seen this? I'm using Logic Pro 8.01 on a G5.

Yes. This is a problem. Also, when you create a new ultrabeat with your own samples and take the time to name them in ultrbeat's piano roll, the next time you open it up in a new project the names are gone. Both of these are major bugs. I have reported this to Apple and seen no results yet.

  • The single drum shots

when i am using th eloopology how would i construct my own drum progressions using the single drum shots and turning the into an actual drum track all the while keeping them in time and tempo any info would be greatly appreciated thanks

Set your session properties first, tempo/BMP, time signature, key, ect. If you are unsure of your tempo and time then enable the metronome and hit the play button. At the bottom of MT view change the time line to bars & beats.  I like to enable snapping as it is a quick way to align to a beat and or the beginning or end of a clip. If you want to accent an off beat or add a little something of interest you may need to turn off all snapping.
Now grab your 1 shots and drag them to a track. I like to put  different drums and cymbals on individual tracks. This gives greater control over each, eq, reverb, panning, ect. If there is a clip you want to repeat continually opposite click  it and go to its' loop properties. Once you have the looping properties set you can drag to the right to lengthen or left or shorten.
Once you build your pattern across 1 or several bars, highlight the part of the pattern you want and play it via the LOOP button on the transport bar. This will allow you to hear if it will seamless repeat as a loop. Believe me, if there is a glitch in your pattern somewhere it will stick out. If it meets your expectations then render/export to a single file that can be looped.

  • Realistic drum sound? Advice given and needed

I am trying to figure out how to get a decent, realistic (ish!) drum sound on the iPad, to use when recording garageband tracks. Let's face it, the smart drums just don't cut it. I have gone through seemingly tons of set-ups and configurations with different apps and so forth, and have sort of settled on a sound which is ok (for now) and is by far the best sound I've achieved so far. Bear in mind that, as a garageband user, I am not investing tons of money into tech - a few pounds per app is all I've spent really. First, I'll describe what I've done in the past, and what I currently do.
I started with the smart drums, of course. Tiresome very quickly, and they were naturally holding back the quality of my recordings by making them sound, basically, rubbish. I find that with drums, they either need to sound decently realistic, or completely electronic (like a drum machine). Anything in-between is nonsense and sounds bad.
I next downloaded the DM1 app and made drum tracks using some of the preset acoustic drum kits. Much much better sound, ability to change individual drum sounds and panning. Still not great though, and very laborious as the track had to be (before ios7 and inter-audio apps were usable with garageband) rendered, emailed to myself, downloaded, converted using file conversion software, loaded into another DAW to allow it to be copied, then pasted into garageband. There was also some latency apparent when exporting the file. Bah!
Eventually I found Easybeats 2. More intuitive, some ok-sounding samples available to use for the different drums. Only 16 bars of drums can be programmed at a time, but that doesn't matter so much as you can easily export the 16 bars into your pasteboard straight from the app, then copy it into garageband (no latency either!). Then just wipe the 16 bars and do the next section. Panning, individual drum control, VELOCITY CONTROL for each hit (finally!).
Still something was missing though. I had yet to find a kick and snare sound which was close to acceptable. DM1 came closest for those two so far, but much worse for cymbals, hi-hats, toms, and had no velocity for each hit (well I think you could select normal or louder for each hit, but nothing more than that - not good enough). Also the snares were a bit weak-sounding. For some time, my solution was to record a drum track on kick and snare only using DM1, load this into garageband, then record a duplicate track in Easybeats 2, again with kick and snare but this time with everything else as well, then load that on another track, and attempt to sync the tracks as closely as possible (sometimes a laborious job considering the latency from DM1), then mix this down to one track. This gave a powerful sound and I was pleased with it for a while, though looking back now, it was awful. Just awful.
When I became dissatisfied with this sound, I came to a crossroads. Was I going to stop this quest for realistic ipad drums, and just buy EZdrummer for my laptop? I would need to upgrade my windows as well. And buy a DAW. An investment of hundreds of pounds! No, I would continue my noble quest! But for this, I would need to enlist the help of my laptop.
What I really needed was a decent kick and snare sound to use in Easybeats 2 (i tried Easybeats 3 but went back to 2. 2 is just better in my opinion). For me, that's 80% of a good drum sound. Average-quality cymbals and hi hats can hide to some extent if the snare and kick are convincing enough. Of course, I'm talking about rough-quality demo tracks - in professional recordings all elements are of course important. I would have to find samples, and save these as a drum kit to be used with Easybeats. But this can't be done using only an ipad. I googled 'acoustic drum samples' on my laptop and on the first page is 'Tom Hicks Samples'. Zip files with tons of samples for every drum you could need, and all free. I don't think you can find better for free online. Still I was not 100% happy with any one sound. I therefore loaded a few sounds into Audacity (free mixing software) and overlayed them, and played with the bass and gain, until I was happy. I then exported these as wavs, created a custom wav kit by sending a compressed file with all of my desired sounds from my laptop directly into Easybeats 2 (you need to plug the ipad into your laptop to enable this), and finally... Finally! My drum kit is completely (for now). The combination of decent sounds and the ability to control the velocity of each hit in Easybeats 2 is, thus far, simply the best method I've discovered for drums on the ipad.
Not being very technically-minded (I prefer just playing and writing music, but know little about tech or computers) the above methods were things I discovered and experimented with gradually, and something as seemingly simple as, say, creating a custom snare sound by overlaying multiple samples into Audacity, then using that sound for every snare hit, is not something which even occurred to me for a long time. There was certainly nothing online that I found to explain or guide me through any of the steps. Most advice amounted simply to 'use DM1', or to not use the ipad at all. Hopefully my advice may prove useful to anyone undertaking a similar quest.
I posted this not just to explain my method, but to ask whether anyone has any input or further advice on creating a good drum sound on the ipad. I am always looking for new ideas, and I am not convinced that I have reached the pinnacle of what the ipad can achieve yet.

I'm definitely going to agree with BeeJay to a point... Logic's drums are not stellar (they're okay, but that's as far as I go), and forget Ultrabeat if you want a little bit a "realism". However, if all you have to work with right now are Logic's kits (and perhaps the Rhythm Section JamPack), go into the EXS and separate the important groups (kick, snare, toms and hi-hats) into their own aux channels and save the the instrument as a multichannel instrument. Work with the separate aux channels by adding in a bit of EQ and/or compression (or do the New York style mix). As well, send the unprocessed signals to a bus containing a drum room reverb and mix them together.
Another thing you may want to consider is the fact in order to sound like a human, don't play it like a robot. Quantize certain parts, but not every part (and it doesn't have to be at 100% - use lower strengths to bring out a bit of humanness). If you don't have one, get a pad input, such as M-Audio's Trigger Finger. Note the a lot of the kits in the EXS and JamPacks have a few articulations for drums that you need to make use of, such as flams, drags and rimshots to do various beats. Listen to various rhythms and fills and watch how drummers do it (plenty of videos on http://www.drummerworld.com). And, when you make a beat, play the beat.
Back to samples: if you find that Logic's kits still aren't cutting it for you, definitely go for something like BFD, DKFH or whatever. I fell in love with BFD and highly recommend it. As to whether it sounds like a drummer for you will depend on how you play it. For me, it definitely sounds like a drummer. :-D

  • Moving Drum Sounds Between 2 Ultrabeats

    Hey all,
I am sure this is very simple, but I have not been able to figure it out through reading the manual. How does one move an analog synthesized drum sound from one Ultrabeat to another Ultrabeat. I have not been able to figure this out and have spent very large amounts of time recreating the sounds in one ultrabeat that I found in another kit. I would really like to not have to do that. A friend suggested bouncing the sound from one ultrabeat and then loading it in as a sample in the other, which seems like it would work. Any other methods?
    Thanks for the help.

Just save the first UB settings as a preset.
In the second UB, use the 'import' function, load up the saved UB, and drag and drop the sounds you wish to use.

  • How to modify the drum sounds in Jam Pack?

Hi Folks, I know this is a newbie question but what I'm reading is over my head. I have the Rhythm Section/Jam Pack and I want to be able to adjust the drum sounds individually. I know it talks about a midi keyboard controller but that's where i lose it. I am playing Roland TD-6 Drums, via MIDI/USB interface to my Mac. Can anyone give me some direction for a MIDI idiot? Thanks much!

Hey Guys, Thanks for the replies, sorry for my delay.
To explain further, what I mean is, with the help of "HangTime" I can play my Roland drums into my Mac and get them to work as a software instrument in GB. Now, I'd like to be able to adjust the sounds: for instance, change the volume of the high hat only, lower the pitch of the first tom only. The following line is in the "Rhythmsection" documentation:
"In addition, you can modify the sound of each drum kit in real time using keyboard controllers, including the modulation (mod) wheel and pitch bend wheel."
I guess what I'm saying is the above statement is currently way beyond my skillset and I was hoping for some simplified direction.
Hope that helps and thank you reading.

  • New York Drum sound

I remember reading a post a couple of weeks ago where a couple of you guys mentioned how to get that "New York" drum sound.
I can't find the post anywhere so could one of kind fellas remind me of the best way to get it. I kind of recall it involved aux channels.
I'm using DFHS C&V and love it but want to get an extra bit of oomph in the sound.
    Ta in advance!

Basically, the idea is this... to tuck a super compressed version of your drum kit underneath the main drum kit.
Generally speaking, this works best with kick, snare and toms, although some cymbal bleed can be really cool too.
Mult those elements of your drum tracks off to their own Aux, and do some heavy compressing on that Aux. Make sure that you don't set the attack of the compressor so low, that all the transients are squashed back. You want those to poke through.
Now, play your track, and slowly slide the Auxes level up from nothing, until you hear the effect of the compression as it blends with your "regular" drum tracks. A little goes a long way here.
You can also experiment with adding a few dB of 10kHz and 100 Hz to that Aux track.

  • MacBook Pro 2012 hinge problem with single click sound when i open it

when i go to sleep and shut my macbook off and close the screen next morning i open my screen and i hear a single click noise??
im paranoid ita a brand new macbook its not a hard drive fail it just a single click sound when i open it to turn on
and heres a video of the hinge is this is whats causing the single click sound? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wEUt2p783nA

I have this problem too with my Mid-2012 MBP non-retina. The screen would click once, after being left for a long time, and would be fine after that, until you close it and re-open it again after a long time. It is especially loud in the morning so I think it is temperature dependent. Happened about 3 months after buying. I took it to Apple. First time they replaced the entire screen. They had to since that is the only way to replace the hinge. When I got it back, the screen still clicks. Took it back to Apple again. Second time they just tightened the screws securing the display with the unibody. When I got it back the second time, the screen still clicks. Took it back to Apple again. The third time they replaced the entire screen AGAIN! When I got it back, the problem was fixed for 2 days, then the screen started clicking again so I'm back to square one. I'm wondering whether I should take it to Apple the forth time, but then again, they've already replaced the screen twice which didn't work so I'm not sure what more they can do. It's either this is normal, which implies the screen hinge is really badly designed or the clicking has nothing to do with the screen at all.
