Single folio optimized for ipad 1/2 and 3

Is it possible to publish a single app, produced with adobe dps, that is optimized for retina display as well as for the older ipads?
so that a customer could buy the app at itunes, and depending on his device, he gets the ipad1/2-version or the retina-version of the single magazine.

Bob L.,
Actually, the print parallel is exactly the way I'm approaching DPS. If I'm printing 150 line screen and an image is 150dpi (or anything less than 300dpi), that's an issue that needs to be fixed. I'm not going to just run it and hope the client doesn't notice. The image is either the correct resolution, or below the correct resolution.
In the case of DPS, I am unable to use the correct resolution for both iPad 1/2 and iPad 3 if I want to distribute a single-edition app. What I want is to be able to target devices and ensure the correct resolution folio is rendered on each device. Renditions is exactly the right feature to accomplish this, but it being limited to multi-issue apps is what's tripping me up. I understand the way the feature is implemented now will not allow for it to exist in single-issue apps. My hope is Adobe changes the way it works and considers renditions an essential feature, regardless of the type of app. In other words, renditions as it is now feels like leveraging Adobe's already-existing services to accomplish a great feature, but perhaps a fresh look at the feature is what's needed to move it beyond its current limitations.
As for file size, I did not say I'm not concerned about it. Rather, I said I'm less concerned about it than quality. For our business, quality is top priority. Our clients and customers have a discerning eye. The image comparison I posted above should illustrate the vast quality difference and the folly in assuming 1024 folios look "nearly identical" or "good enough" on the new iPad.
And yes, I realize we can do "the whole thing" with HTML. We create our own webapps, do all of our own hosting and have staff that develops in Rails, Javascript, HTML, etc. Our production staff, however, knows nothing but InDesign. My hope with DPS was to ensure our production staff could create publications for print and use DPS for tablet publishing. But, the more I learn about DPS, the more attractive building our own apps leveraging HTML sounds.
I'm posting my feedback here thinking Adobe might like to know that a small publishing company like ours is evaluating DPS and coming to the conclusion we may be better off moving away from Adobe's tools altogether, including InDesign, and working in HTML.
Thanks,
Chris

We have been producing single folio apps for the iPad and want to continue this through 2015.
At the moment we can only create apps for the iPad platform.  If we upgrade to a Professional Edition DPS license can we create an unlimited number of Single edition apps for iPad, iPhone and Android devices?
We do not need multi-folio apps as we are not a publishing company.

We are not a publishing company so we will produce a small number of the apps.  If you could get back to me with a solution and approx price that would be great.

Go to destination is unsupported in DPS. You should be using go to url with a navto: command.

  • In need of a combobox optimized for ipad/iphone

Sorry, I'm rather new at this but nearly have an app ready for ipad deployment with only one major hang up.  I'm trying to implement a combobox optimized for ipad's touch screen.  I've tried using the one found here: http://blog.kevinhoyt.org/?p=548 but can't load the swc file. I get an "unexpected file error".  I've even moved the swc file to the components directory.  Do I have to have Flex to have it work?
Does anyone have a touch screen optimized scrollable list, like a combobox, that works well with their app?  If so I'd love to have the source code as I need all the help I can get.
    Thanks,

    Hi lt12345,
I understand that you are looking to use the Photosmart 2710 with Windows 8.1 RT, but are unable to locate a driver. In my attempt to locate a driver I have come up empty handed. It appears that this printer is not supported for printing from Windows RT.

I purchased iWork apps for iPad (pages, numbers and keynote).  How do I transfer files from my Laptop PC to the cloud for my iPad?  Thanks!  Frustrated Janet

    Greetings Janet,
    Read here: http://www.apple.com/mobileme/news/2010/09/iwork-for-ipad-apps-now-support-mobil eme-idisk.html
Login to your iDisk on the windows machine and then click on the Home on the left.
Upload whatever documents you want access to on your iPad to your iDisk.
Once you have the desired files on your iDisk you go to the app on your iPad you wish to work with tap the sharing button (little arrow going down into a box) which will give you an "iDisk" option and you'll see the files there.
    Hope that helps.

  • Create single .folio file for desktop viewing

    Hi,
I need a bit of help here please. We are currently on issue 2 of our iPad magazine: https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/absolute-photo-magazine/id719597521?mt=8
We are trying to create a version of our app that Advertisers can view on all platforms (iPad & Desktop). What we have done is created a delegate account and from the folio builder panel, we have shared the specific folio with that delegate and emailed the login credentials to certain advertisers. This allows them to view it using Content viewer on an iPad.
I am also trying to export the .folio file in order to send this out to specific people to view using Content Viewer on desktop (PC & MAC). In the example here http://www.e3zine.com/desktopviewer.html there is a single .folio file but when I use the export function within the Publishing Suite it exports a zip file which contains all articles as individual .folio files. Is there any way of exporting this folio as one single .folio file?
    Thanks
    Dean

    Hi,
Thanks for your response. I will try the solution for windows users. However, for Mac desktop users this is supported by DPS as shown in this example:
http://www.e3zine.com/desktopviewer.html where I was able to download a .folio file and preview it in Content Viewer on my iMac. I have been able to export my published folio from the publishing suite into a zip folder on my desktop which contains a series of .folio files that are all viewable within content viewer for desktop. The question is how to create one single .folio file like in the example rather than a series of .folio files?
    Thanks
    Dean

  • Make a folio created for iPad viewable on non-tablets

    1) I'm creating a folio that is meant to be viewed on the iPad using InDesign, but I also want it to be viewable in a web browser (I'm thinking about just embedding a SWF file?). It's my first one so I'm not sure exactly what I will need to do at the end. I've found tutorials that take me from start to finish for the iPad version, but I don't want to do a bunch of work and then lose functionality for the web version. I would also be interested to know what functionality I would lose if I tried to convert it to HTML5.
    2) Second question would be how I can distribute the folio if I don't need it to go through the App Store. I will be sharing it with a known (small) group of users. The research I've done leads me to believe that I would have to have an enterprise license to hand out individual instances of the app. Is this correct? I'm on adobe CC.

    1) There is no way to do this as a Single Edition user. You can create a folio for iPad, but that's it.
    2) If it's just one or two people you can share the folio with them and they can use the Adobe Content Viewer and an Adobe ID to log in and view it.

  • SSM 10.1 Screens Optimized for iPad

With the recent release of SSM 10.1 SP4, users can now consume SSM content natively on the iPad (ie without the need for the SSM iPad App). Specifically users can view data on
    Scorecards: objective and KPIs data
    Homepage: alerts and performance
    summary
    Initiatives: initiative summary and
    milestones
    Strategy: diagrams including objective drilldown
    Briefing Books: as PDF
In future SPs we plan to add the ability to view and respond to Comments, edit Initiative data, and view and approve Entry and Approval data.

The core SSM screens are not optimized for iPhones now, but adding the ability to do things like view and approve Entry and Approval data via the iPhone is definitely on our radar.
Yes, your iPad must be connected to your corporate network to access SSM data IF SSM is deployed within the org's firewall. If SSM is deployed in a hosted environment (e.g. via a partner hosted or HANA Enterprise Cloud environment) then connection to the corporate network may not be required.
Yes, at some point we will have a publicly available, self contained demo that highlights the SSM iPad optimized screens. At a minimum we'll have a recorded demo available on YouTube soon, similar to the CI demos up there now...see the links below.

  • Using a single external drive for both Time Machine AND for manual backups?

I'm new to Leopard and haven't launched Time Machine yet. I would like to use a single (500 GB) external hard drive to use with Time Machine, plus I would like to use whatever portion of this external drive Time Machine isn't using to keep some other files upon it as well--things that I can drag-and-drop manually and then trash from my computer's HD (avi files, etc., so that they don't take up space on the computer). Is there anything special I need to do with the external hard drive before I let Time Machine have its way with it, so that I can also do drag-and-drop manual file backups with it?

I’m not terribly knowledgeable, but I’ll tell you what seems to be working for me.
I also have a 500GB external drive which I had planned to use for TM for my MBP. I partitioned it (using Disk Utility) into two partitions. One I created nearly the same size as my MBP drive, the other I used for TM.
I used the smaller partition for a backup using SuperDuper prior to upgrading from Tiger to Leopard. Once I tested that I was able to boot from it and that all my programs seemed to work, I upgraded to Leopard and told it to use the other partition for TM.
It then created a TM icon for the other partition and, to the machine, it looks like a separate drive. I’ve seen no performance hit at all.
Just one man’s experience, though I haven’t yet tried to retrieve anything.
    Good luck.

  • BEWARE on OnLive Desktop for iPad 1, 2 and 3

I signed up for OnLive Desktop Plus but what they won't tell you up front is that you need  4G service.  This is not available for iPad 1 or 2.
Oh, gee, I'll have to upgrade to the new iPad3 version for a few hundred bucks just so that I can use OLDPlus which costs a mere $5/month.
The iPad 3 will have 4G service.
Well, I'm not ready to part ways with my original iPad so this promising new app will not serve the many millions of users like myself and who have been mislead by deceptive marketing promises.  NO REFUNDS ALLOWED.
    Think before you click.

Possums and Burgers and anyone in between....
Well, thanks for your delayed responses to my rant of March 9....   well deserved....  I'm happy to inform you that this week
I upgraded from my iPad1 to iPad 3 (sold former for $300) and although I have still lots to discover of the advantages, I must say the app which appeals to me the  most is the camera and ease of delivery of images.  This is especially cool when I get a Skype call from far away and I'm faced with not only my own face but the caller's  at a merciless close and clear  image.....
Well, who am I to complain.... when I first arrived as a teen to the US in 1969, I had to mail an audio cassette by sea  to my mother in Sweden and it took approx. 3 weeks to get to her.  That was as close to a personal greeting we could get if not using the airmail  letter service.
Count your blessings....don't take anything for granted....
Oh, and do call/email your mother, father or other members of your family just to let them know you love them and that you keep them in your thoughts.....now and then....  it means a lot!

  • IMovie for iPad 2 - importing and exporting

    Hi all,
I am a brand new iPad 2 user and am looking to edit my home videos using the iMovie iPad app.
After a bit of research it seems there is a bit of discussion on the ability to add your own video files for iMovie to recognise the format for editing.
I was just wondering if anyone with recent experience can share if it is possible to do this method without a whole heap of converting and transferring.
Here are a couple of my other related questions:
    1. Import - how do you import video from a digital camera or video camera to your iPad?
    2. Export - once in iTunes how do I get it on my iMac for playback and sharing? i.e. create DVD, add to USB stick/flash drive.
    3. Export - what video file format does iMovie on the iPad 2 export to?
    4. Export - can I export the iMovie project file from the iPad 2 and then continue to work on it using my iMac?
    Many thanks

1 - Imovie for iPad is made to work with video shot with an IOS device. You would have to make sure it's compatible
2 - Export the movie to your camera roll. Connect to computer and import just like you would from any camera.
3 - it exports an MOV file, h.264 encoding (720P)
4 - Yes you can export a project and continue to work on it on the Mac, make sure you have the latest version.

  • Is there a single  reference source for IPad 1 user problems?

I am a new IPad user and have not found using it as easy as I thought  (from listening to ipad users saying how simple  it is) and  being used to Windows for the past 15 years.
In particular, since I did the recommended up date to 5.1 , my iPad has become very noticeably slower to respond - from connecting to the Internet to lag in typing and frequent crashes . Have tried factory reset which has improved it a little - but not enough to stop me powering up my ancient laptop which is definitely quicker!
I have tried browsing the support community but found trying to wade through a single thread of 40 pages relating to this problem overwhelming  .  Through google i have found some (allegedly) expert advice on solving this problem from 'non apple sources' but would prefer to trust apple sources.
Is there a single source of expert information or advice relating to specific problems such as the above exist anywhere and if so please could you point me towards it?

  • Scaling a folio made for ipad to fit on iphone?

    Hi guys,
I'm new to DPS - has been a steep learning curve!
Wanted to ask advice as to best practise for creating folios for multiple devices. All my googling tells me HOW I "could" do it.. but no best practise articles.
So, I've converted a magazine into an iPad (768x1024) folio and its working great on the ipad (except for the iOS8 Youtube bug) - but I was asked to make it work on an iPhone (as a fallback).
So my question was: do I (or is there a way) to simply tell the folio to scale the iPad version to fit on the iPhone screen (letterbox/pillar) or do I need to create a 2nd layout for each acticle? OR.. do I create a separate version altogether?
You advice would be greatly appreciated.

1024x768 folios don't appear on iPhones. You must create either a 480x320, 960x640, or 1136x640 for the folio to appear on the iPhone. The iPhone viewer scales up but not down, so the 960x640 folio won't appear on an iPhone 3GS, and an 1136x640 folio won't appear on an iPhone 4S. One option is to create a set of folio renditions, such as 480x320 and 11360x640, to account for all iPhone devices. Look up "dps renditions" for info.
As far as creating iPhone source files from iPad source files, your best bet is to create alternate layouts in InDesign. There are a number of different approaches you can take, but I like to either center or scale the content and rebuild the design in the alternate layout. If it's an HTML source file, simply create a new folio that's one of the iPhone files and import the HTML articles.

  • Update of software for iPad was interrupted and the iPad is now locked up.  Any ideas for how to re-start the update process?

    Hi all,
I was updating the software on my iPad2 and while trying to multitask stopped the update process.  My iPad is now locked up and unresponsive.  Does anyone have ideas about how to re-load the update?

You will need to hold down the power + sleep button, wait for restart, then hold home.  iTunes should then be in DFU mode.  Once in DFU mode connect to iTunes and click "Restore".  PRESTO!
