Single instance Dataguard on RAC

Hi
I am trying to create a single instance dataguard for 2 node RAC. The following is the uname -a on all the 3 machines. Just want to know as the uname is different on dataguard machine than the RAC nodes, will there be poblems? I am using CentOS 4.
Also, the Oracle veresion of RAC and standby machine is 10.2.0.1. Is it recomended to patch to 10.2.0.3 first or patch after setting up dataguard.
Thanks in Advance

I doubt Oracle 10g R2 , is certified with CentOS !!!
Check Certify - Oracle's Certification Matrices

It is good,to install patch set 10.2.0.3 , before setting DG.

    In essense you are really doing nothing more than restoring a backup on a new host. If you want a blow by blow detail of how to accomplish it take at http://www.oracledistilled.com/oracle-database/restore-database-to-another-host-using-rman
    In order to write the files to the ASM Disk groups you will use the SET NEWNAME FOR DATAFILE in your restore script. You will also need to create the ORACLE_BASE/admin/<DBSID> structure on all of node. Once you get the database completely restore you will need to edit the SPFILE to include the proper value for the CLUSTER* parameters and each the node specific parameters. Sorry that it is kind of higher level than what you are probably looking for but the link above and what I put here should get you were want to go.

  • 10gR2 single instance to 11gR2 rac upgrade

    Can someone tell me some good approach for upgrading a single instance 10.2.0.2 database of approx size 2TB to 11.2.0.3 rac 2 node db on linux.

    Hi;
    1. You can upgrade your db to 11gr2 first than convert it to rac
    2. You can use RMAN and restore it to new 11gR2 server
    3. You can use expdp/impdp to new 11gR2 server

  • Single-Instance ASM to RAC ASM !!

    At the moment i am in process to create a RAC ASM instance on two nodes. When i was creating ASM instance it gave me error that unable to connect to crsd on Node2.
    So i manually added asm instance using srvctl on node2. It is registered with CRS but it is not online. I tried starting up by using crs_start or srvctl start asm but asm resource is down on both the nodes.
    I have started up manually both the ASM instance and created some Diskgroups, Now i have to create a RAC enabled DB for which it is showing convert single-instance ASM to RAC ASM.
    What needs to be done.

    Hi
    because the service ASM was added individually the crs stack is unable to recognise the clustering of ASM. In fact this has just made the ASM on two nodes function as two seperate ASM instances. They were never clustered. So i think convertion is one option. I came here while looking for one such doc. My 10.2.0.1 RAC install on windows 2003 went on a toss.. while dbca was trying to set up the clustered ASM and configure the instance, the primary node crashed and when it was recovered, i could notice the ASM instance is created on one node only.. When i try to invoke dbca again, neither am allowed to create an ASM instance for RAC/convert the existing one to RAC. Until now what I have found is that if such case arise, the quicker way is to revert everything back, clean up the server of clusterware and re install every thing... but before am looking for my options..
    does any body have an idea? please share
    sarat.

  • Creating a new single instance on a RAC structure

    I have a RAC with 2 nodes using ASM, it's perfect running.I don't have any problems with that.
    Now I need to create a new instance in one of the RAC the nodes.
    So my question is, I need to create a new ASM instance for this new single instance that I will create?
    What will be the best practice in this case?

    But i will have to create a new ASM instance to control the storage of this new instance?
    I have the ASM1(node 1) and ASM2(node 2) I will have to create de +ASM3 on  the node 1 to control this new instance?

  • Convert single instance in Rac

    Hello experts, I have already configured a cluster database between two nodes with a RAC database named Cars. Also I have a single instance database named Persons in the first of the nodes. Now I need convert this single instance(Persons) in a Rac database, that is I want to have two RAC database(Cars and the new Persons).
    Thank you very much in advance.

    Oracle provides following methods to convert a single instance database to RAC:

  • Convert ASM single instance to RAC ASM instance...

    Hi, all
    Im installing OracleDatabase with RAC and I got an error on the Database Configuration Assistant that says "The ASM instance configured on the local node is a single instance. To manage this instance as a single-instance ASM restart DBCA and select the single instance database option. To manage this instance as RAC ASM, convert it to RAC ASM first".
    How I can convert it??
    Thanks

  • Rconfig: converting a single instance to RAC instance

    Hi,
    I am trying to use the "rconfig" utility to convert a single instance to a RAC instance in an existing RAC cluster.
    I have modified the .xml file, and am trying to run the conversion from the 1st node in the 2 node cluster (where the single instance resides).
    The only error message i seem to be getting is below:
    <Response>
    <Result code="1" >
    Operation Failed
    </Result>
    <ErrorDetails>
    ORCL_DATA_ORCLCLN The specified diskgroup is not mounted.
    </ErrorDetails>
    </Response>
    </Convert>
    </ConvertToRAC></RConfig>
    Now I dont really understand why I would be getting that message as the instance is up and running and ASM disk group is mounted on node1 at the time i run the rconfig command, though its not clear to me if I also need to somehow mount the ASM disk group on the second node prior to running the rconfig command??

    Ok,
    So I managed to get the disk group mounted on the second node, and re-ran the rconfig process.

  • Using RMAN to create single instance standby from 2 node rac

    Any advice on the RMAN command to take a non catalog full rman backup from a two node 11gr2 rac node and use it to create the STANDBY single instance.
    The RAC two node instance is in ASM (Linux)
    The Physical Standby is Normal File System (Linux)
    The command that I get from Metalink suggests:
    rman target sys/passwd@primary catalog RMAN/RMAN@RMAN auxiliary sys/passwd
    RMAN> run {
    allocate auxiliary channel C1 device type disk;
    duplicate target database for standby;
    When I took the rman backup I did not use catalog. Please suggest how to accomplish the same task without catalog. Thanks

  • Restore single instance rman backup to rac database

    Hello all. I have a 10gR2 single instance database that I have been taking backups using the oracle's suggested backup strategy, that is, once full database backup and incremental backups here and there. That's is all fine as I have (many times) being requested to rollback the database resulting in all operations being sucessfull.
    However, since this is somehow a pre-certification database, I am now being tasked to restore this database to what is going to be our production database, which is a 10gR2 rac database. I have already set up the RAC database sucessfull.
    Now, my question is: How can I take one of the backups that I have on the single-instance database and restore onto my RAC database ?
    Some information about the infraestructure:
    Both operating systems are HP-UX. Single instance is 11.23, RAC database is 11.31.
    Both database are using ASM as datafiles storage and flash recovery area storage.
    Any help will be appreciated!
    Thanks!

    In general terms, there are several ways you can convert a single instance into a rac intance, and it involves much more activities than just adding redo threads.
    Use of DBCA
    Enterprise Manager Grid Control
    rconfig utility
    Considering your case, if you don't currently have Grid Control, the first option is rconfig.
    1. Migrate your database from the current environment to the target environment by a regular cloning procedure, this will create a single instance into your rac environment. Your regular rdbms rac installation allows you to manage both, single instance and rac instances. Use this procedure to clone your database to the target RAC environment using recovery manager --> http://madrid9999.googlepages.com/rmancloneadatabase
    2. Once you have started your database in the RAC environment proceed with the rconfig tool, this requires some files to perform the conversion, the ConvertToRAC.xml file which is located at $ORACLE_HOME/assistants/rconfig/sampleXMLs
    3. Once you copied/edited the ConvertToRAC.xml file, you have to run the rconfig. Save the ConvertToRAC.xml under a different file name.
    rconfig editedConvertToRAC.xml
    4. For further reference on the rconfig command, you may refer to this page Oracle® Real Application Clusters Installation Guide

  • Duplicate single instance (11.2.0.2) database to RAC (11.2.0.3)

    Hi Experts,
    I have to duplicate my PROD database which is a single instance in to RAC TEST database. Please give me procedure to do that.
    Prod database - Single Instance - 11.2.0.2
    TEST Database - Need to create dummy instance in RAC and restore the PROD data - 11.2.0.3
    Note: RMAN duplicate failed due to different patch level.
    Regards,
    Salai

    You CAN restore an 11.2.0.2 database backup into an 11.2.0.3 ORACLE_HOME.  You will need to upgrade the database (data dictionary) using catupgrd.sql from the 11.2.0.3.
    Conversion to RAC will be done after completing the upgrade.  Essentially, this consists of adding one more Redo Log Thread and one more Undo tablespace.

  • Single node Dataguard setup

    Please can somebody provide me the source for step by step single instance physical standby dataguard setup for my single instance database.

    http://static7.userland.com/oracle/gems/alejandroVargas/DataGuardPhysicalStandbystep.pdf
    I got this PDF from the above link, do you have one for 'single instance to single instance dataguard setup' as in the one you sent from Page 17 of 27 it starts telling about RAC which is confusing me. Please send if you have any other pdf or source.
