Single Link DVI-I to Dual Link DVI-D?!!

I have a (G1)Power Mac G5 with a ATI Radeon 9800 Pro with a Single Link DVI-I connecter, and my LG 19'' LCD has a Dual Link DVI-D connecter. What DVI cable do I need? I heard the newer Dual Link DVI-D cable will work with the older Single Link DVI-I. if it does, how does this work? DVI-I and DVI-D has differant pin slots. Please help!

The display is probably single-link DVD unless it is more than 1920 X 1200. The DVI plug may have all the pins, but the dual-link pins are probably not connected to any wires. The Graphics board uses DVI-I which include digital and analog. It can be used with DVI-D cables which don't use the analog signals.

  • No display when connect DVI-D dual link cable

    Hi
I am using MS-6398 motherboard and I have the latest Bios 5.60.  when I connect DVI-D dual link cable from ATI All-In-Wonder 8500DV graphic card to my SONY SDM-M81 Flat Panel.  There is no display at all during POST as well as after boot up. It has display only if I connect with regular analog VGA cable.  I have contacted the ATI tech support and they ask me to contact the manufacturer of my motherboard because it don't have display during POST which is nothing to do with driver.
    thanks,
    Siong

DVI-D port on the Ultradock is single link only.
If you need DVI-D at dual link resolution (i.e. 2560x1600), you need an active displayport to dual link converter. Startech makes them, they should be around 80 USD or something of that region.

  • Best way to connect T430 to Dual Link DVI 2560x1440 Catleap monitors?

I have a T430 and I am looking to get one of those cheap $300 27" Korean 2560x1440 IPS/PLS monitors, but the problem is all of the cheap models only take dual link DVI, while the new T430 notebooks only output via displayport.
I was thinking the best solution for this would be to buy a Lenovo dock that natively outputs dual link DVI (DP to dual link DVI adapters do not allow for refresh rate overclocking). Though on the Lenovo website they don't specify whether their docks output single or dual link, and I am not sure if the signal conversion is done "natively" or via some custom chip in the docks which might prevent refresh rate overclocking.  Do you guys know of any T430 docks that are definitely equiped with native dual link DVI? If the docks are only single link DVI or do not allow overclocking then that leaves either buying a $70 adapter and forgoing the overclocking or buying a significantly more expensive monitor with displayport input (and more input lag).
What have your experiences with connecting your T430 to one of these monitors been like? And what do you think would be the best solution at the moment?

The dock dvi is single link dvi-d, if you wish to use dual link dvi-d connection, then you should consider the Apple laptop's active miniDP to Dual Link DVI-D converter.

  • Dual link? SLI multi-head?

    Hi all.
A couple of quick technical questions. I own an IBM T221(9503)-DG5 monitor, which can be driven from a dual link DVI connector (plus a single link one).
The NX6800GT-T2D256E is listed as having dual link support (in the chipset on the main page, and I believe there's a PDF which claims it too). However, I know there's been some confusion in the past - I understand that nVidia's reference 6800 boards really did have dual link (two SiI178s per output) connectors, but that these have been left out by all consumer manufacturers so far, and some other nVidia board manufacturers (e.g. Innovision) are still claiming dual-link support despite the fact that their cards provide two single link outputs. On the other hand, it's promising that none of MSI's other cards are listed as having dual link support.
Can anyone confirm for me that this MSI board really *does* have dual-link support on at least one of its heads? Currently the only boards with this feature are workstation class (Quadros, FireGLs, Realizms, etc.) and the Apple DDL boards (the 30" cinema display also needs a dual link connector). Since I've no need for the other features of workstation boards, I don't really want to pay that kind of money for a part which is different only in some $30 interface chips... so I'll buy the MSI part like a shot if the support is there. MSI UK haven't yet been able to confirm with head office for me.
Corollary: if there's an impending 6800Ultra version with the same connectors, I'll gladly wait for that instead!
In a related topic, as noted above my monitor is best driven from two DVI outputs (one dual link, one single). However, I've heard a rumour that SLI is only supported on one head - I know it disables the output from one card, but this is more restrictive. In my case, both heads are driving the same display, so in theory the driver ought to be able to cope by treating both outputs as one frame buffer... but can anyone give me details on the behaviour I can expect? If I have to switch to driving from a single head, there's little benefit to me from trying to run an SLI system - at that would lean me even more towards a 6800Ultra, if one is in the pipeline.
I'll need to buy a PCI-E system in which to put the MSI card, so I'm keen to be sure of myself before ordering even if I could return the MSI card should it not work as advertised.
Thanks in advance for any information.

Iiyama VMPro 454 (off the FX5200)
    Tagan 480W PSU
That's probably about all that's relevant...
Oh, and based in the UK.

Since I found out the answer to my own question...
The PCI-E 6800GT (OEM version of the NX6800GT-T2D256E) which I've got *really is* dual link - I can drive 3840x2400 at 25Hz from a single head, and there appear to be two SiI178s on board. Big hand to MSI. This presumably means that the board would be capable of driving Apple 30" cinema displays, although reports from people with Quadros suggest that the Apple display is a bit temperamental.
Unfortunately, I've had trouble getting the single link head to run 1216x2400 at 48Hz, so I've not got the whole display running at 48Hz yet, but I'm told that may be an issue with newer drivers so I'll try again (or play with PowerStrip). There's always quad head mode if I give up on SLi...
A word of warning: the second head on this card is DVI-D only - that is, it's a DVI-I connector, but with no analogue pins connected, so you can't use a DVI/SVGA adaptor to plug in an analogue monitor except on the primary head. That means that if you want a 30" Apple plus a CRT, budget for a second card...
I'm waiting on a new motherboard before I can answer my SLi question, but I can live with the options I've got even if I don't quite manage everything I'd hoped for.

  • Jittery mouse with SINGLE link DVI adaptor!! Not Dual-link

    Hello All,
I've found the Dual-link DVI adapter threads regarding this known issue but I'm now experiencing this with _not just one but 2 Single Link DVI_ adapters and my 24" Benq display.
I bought these 2 adapters the day I bought my laptop (mid-december) and was using one non stop for several months without a single issue and 2 days ago, suddenly my mouse is constantly jumping when connected to an external monitor. A reboot will not alleviate the problem, only when I disconnect the mini dp to DVI adapter does the mouse start behaving correctly. It happened before and after I upgraded to the new iTunes 8.1 and iLife support update. Everything else is up to date on my system...
    I've tried:
    -Zap Pram
-Remove all USB devices but mouse/keyboard
    -Many many reboots
-Switched from performance to better battery mode on the display settings
-Uninstalled completely (and properly) iStat menu
    -Using 3 different mice
-Used a brand new mini-dp to single link DVI that I had purchased for my laptop bag and never used
So I'm back to using my laptop screen in front of a dark 24" monitor since I can't really work efficiently with a constantly jumping mouse. I've not seen anyone else experiencing this on a single link adapter... Anybody else???
    Thanks!

I have found a possible solution to your issues. It worked for me. I am using the midi Display to DVI.
My issue was that I started getting the mouse and video lag when the external monitor was plugged in. I had no issues in the past, it just started to happen. I thought it was a XP update so when I booted back to XP there was no lag. It was strange. I had called support and they cleared my memory but that didn't work. So when they told me it was hardware issues I didn't really believe it. Especially when it was working ok in XP but not in OSX.
So to make a long enough story short, the thread I found suggested to plug your monitor in another location than the Mac is plugged into. Like a surge bar. I had both plugged into a surge protector so I plugged the monitor directly in the wall and what do you know, the lag issues stopped.
Sounds strange but why it work, Who the frak knows. I am just glad it fixed this issue. Was driving me nuts.

  • DVI-D Dual link and DVI-D Single link

I have here a FPD2185W Gateway 21" monitor that will not connect to my mac via the MBP's DVI port. I sent in the Mac for repair and it was sent back saying "everything is A-OK". Now my question is, are the cables that i am using effecting the functionality because i know the monitor works on a PC via DVI, but not the mac. The Cable im using now is a DVI-D Dual Link cable. would it be wise to try the Single link cable? I am pretty sure i have tried everything, and am desperate to get a DVI signal going to my monitor instead of the VGA.
    -thanks, grant

Do a Google search on "FPD2185W Mac" and you'll see quite a few problem reports. It seems like the Gateway display is the problem and just won't work properly with some Macs.

Is an Apple ACTIVE Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter the same thing as an old Mini-DP to DVI adapter?
Will a different adaptor give me better resolution between my old computer and a new monitor?
    Computer: MBP 15-inch Mid 2010
    Monitor: Dell U2713H
Current cable: 20276 3dv ft1 DVI Digital Dual Link with a Apple Mini-DP to DVI adapter to get it to plug into my MBP.
Possible solution?: Apple ACTIVE Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter instead of my old adapter above?

Yes. A single-link DVI connection can't drive that monitor at its maximum resolution.

  • Switching between Dell 4K display and Apple Mini DisplayPort To Dual-Link DVI Adapter

    Hi All,
I've recently upgraded my home setup to a Dell 4K display (Dell P2815Q), which since the 10.9.3 update work as expected.
However the downside is that my office setup uses a Mini displayport to Dual-Link DVI adapter (Firmware version 1.03) and a Dell 30" display (2560x1600), which will not work without a reboot after using the 4K display. If I use the 4K display after using the Dual-Link DVI adapter it works fine.
Is this a know issue ? If not, I'm happy to provide some more diagnostic information to help resolve the issue.

    http://www.everymac.com/ says:
*This model supports a simultaneous maximum resolution up to 2560x1600 on two external displays via Thunderbolt. Alternately, it can support a single display up to 2560x1600 via Thunderbolt and a single 1080p display at up to 60 Hz, 3840x2160 at 30 Hz, or 4096x2160 at 24 Hz via HDMI.
DVI is not mentioned at all.  You probably need to connect to the display via HDMI to get the 4096x2160 resolution.

  • What does the 'Dual' in Dual-Link DVI Adapter refer to?

We purchased a 'Mini Display Port to Dual-Link DVI Adapter thinking it meant we could split the output to two monitors such as the Matrox TripleHead2Go or Matrox DualHead2Go.
Having received it, we are unable to determine the advantage of using this product other than a normal Mini to DVI adapter. Hopefully the Dual doesn't refer to the addition of a USB port. Thanks for any replies.
    --Bruce D. Meyer

DVI uses a transmission format called "transmission minimized differential signaling" (TMDS). In the DVI standard, single-link means that there's one 165MHz TMDS transmitters connected, and dual-link means that there is 2 (doubling the bandwidth of the cable). So, a single-link cable can transmit 1920x1200 at 60 Hz, whereas a dual-link can transmit 2560 x 1600 at 60 Hz (about 1.8x the resolution).
So, a dual-link cable will allow you to use higher resolutions and frequencies (though common LCD panels are locked at 60 Hz) than a single-link one.

  • Can a Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter do the same job as the Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter?

Can a Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter do the same job as the Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter?  Meaning, can I connect a DVI screen less than 30 inches?  Why would I buy the expensive product?  Simply because I might have to sometimes work with a small screen, sometimes with a big, and it would save me the trouble and money of buying both.  If the answer is yes, do I have to constantly plug it in USB, even on a smaller screen?

    Hi p,
Can a Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter do the same job as the Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter?
    Yes.
Meaning, can I connect a DVI screen less than 30 inches?
    Yes.
Why would I buy the expensive product?
Don't know which products you're looking at, so can't say.
Simply because I might have to sometimes work with a small screen, sometimes with a big, and it would save me the trouble and money of buying both.  If the answer is yes, do I have to constantly plug it in USB, even on a smaller screen?
A dual link is supposed to handle any single link signal, it just has twice the bandwidth.

  • Will the old 23" ACD work with the Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapte

Will the old 23" ACD work with the Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter and the new MacBook Pro?
Apple Store says it is for the 30" only.

I'm not so sure about that. I'd say the jury's still out until someone gets one and tries to use it single-link.

  • No Video from Mini-DisplayPort or DVI, only Dual-Link DVI

Just got my new Mac Pro 6-Core delivered. Out of the box, there were problems. I have a Dell 27" monitor that takes Dual-Link DVI, DisplayPort, or HDMI and a Dell 22" monitor that takes DVI, VGA, or HDMI. I am using a DisplayPort to Mini-DisplayPort cable to connect my 27" monitor to the Mac Pro and a DVI cable for my 22" monitor. I have the ATI 5870 graphics card installed OEM.
The problem is that the graphics card appears to not be switching to Mini-DisplayPort or DVI for output. It only works when I plug in a Dual-Link DVI cable to my 27" monitor. At that point, I get a video feed on my screen on a hard boot. At this point, I can then plug in my Mini-DisplayPort cable to my Mac Pro and unplug the Dual-Link DVI cable, and it switches video feeds perfectly. The problem then is that when I restart the computer, or power off and power on, the problem starts all over again. I HAVE to boot using the Dual-Link DVI cable for anything to work.
Ideas? Called AppleCare, waiting on engineering to see what they have to say. All the cables work perfectly when I plug them into my MacBook Pro (Late 2008). I am stumped.

I seem to be having similar problems. I bought the same system (6-core Westmere with the 5870 graphic card installed OEM) last month and I seem to be having problems running two Dell monitors which I know to be perfectly fine.
For the past month, I've been using a 24" Dell U2410 monitor with my Mac Pro using a DVI cable. Absolutely no problems at all. I then purchased another 24" Dell U2410 with the intention of running with dual displays. To prepare for this, I bought two mini-DisplayPort to DisplayPort cables from Monoprice. When I finally received the second display, I turned off the computer, hooked up both monitors through DisplayPort using the two mini-DisplayPort connections on the graphics card and turned on the system. I got two black screens. I tried to use keyboard commands to bring up the shutdown dialog box but it wasn't working. So I was forced to do a hard shutdown by holding down the power button for 10 seconds.
I went through a series of combinations of power cycles for the displays and computer and still two black screens. Finally, I went back to square one, a single display through a DVI cable. Again, a black screen. At this point, I disconnected the display from the computer. Power cycled the display (this initiates the self-test for the Dell display), hooked it up to the Mac Pro, turned it on, and it worked. I had one working display. Then I plugged in the second display using the mini-DisplayPort to Display port cable and that worked also. Finally, two working displays. For some reason, the Mac Pro recognized the display using the DisplayPort as the primary monitor. I rebooted the Mac Pro and the monitors continued to work properly. I booted into Windows 7 and again, no problems. I went back to OS X and used the computer for the night. When I was done, it put it to sleep.
This morning, when I tried to wake it up, same problems. I had to go through a series of power cycles and cable swapping to finally get a single screen to work.
I went through some of the troubleshooting documents here in the Support area and found this one:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4279
I am going to pick up the Apple mini-DisplayPort to DVI adapter and try running the display as two DVI monitors. Hopefully this will fix those problems. If the AppleCare engineer is able to give you anymore information, please let us know. This is a worrisome issue.

  • Macbook Pro with Retina wont detect monitor on mini display port to dual-link dvi adapter

So after reading Jeff Atwood's post, I decided to jump and give it a shot. So this week I got my monitor in from Korea, and I already had my Apple mini display port to dual-link dvi adapter, hooked everything up - and nothing. Monitor doesnt show a signal, and no display shows up in user preferences.
To verify the monitor actually works, i plugged it into my windows box - and boom, right away there it is in all its glory. So I called apple support, after spending about an hour going through the "are you sure its plugged in stuff", the tech finally admitted to being stumped and blamed the adapter. Not to be deterred, I then went to my local apple store and talked them into trying their adapter to rule out the adapter - regardless of the adapter, the mbp wont detect the monitor.
Just for fun, i tried my old single mini displayport to single dvi, the monitor is recognized, but that obviously cant drive the right resolution, so i just get a backlight. Same deal when i try the hdmi port with a hdmi to dual-link dvi adapter on the end of it. Also tried display port to the same hdmi with adapter on it (the joys of working in a dev shop - cables to test everywhere)
I have read / tried a ton of things:
re-installed / uninstalled air display, just to be sure it was gone. went through all my apps just to see if there is anything like this i could think would be effecting it
install gfxCardStatus to ensure i am on the nvidia (discrete) and not the internal card
Played with different settings on SwitchResX to try to force the res over hdmi - no love - os rejected each one
I bought the monoprice adapter wondering if it was just the apple adapter since the apple adapter has been panned, no love from it either
    Reset the PRAM countless times
I have two other adapters coming in to test with in a day or two - maybe one of those will be magic, but at this point i kinda think its software on the mac. My Spec:
I am running Mountain Lion with all the latest updates
New MBP with Retina (2.6g processor, 16gig ram, nvidia video card)
Here is the ebay link to the monitor
Now the other weird thing is pretty much universally these auctions say the monitors cant be run on a laptop - which makes no sense to me, because its just a connection, if the video card is strong enough (which my machine better be) it shouldnt matter the source. The listing mentions its a "by-pass" monitor, which is something I and google have never heard of.
So any sage words to make my day?

Magic was, I have to have the adpter plugged into the mac, let it recognize all with the monitor powered off.
then power on the monitor, and boom gloriousness
For future generations, setup that works:
    1) MacBook Pro with Retina
    2) Monitor From Korea (example auction)
    3) Accell Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Active adapter (amazon)
    4) Boot mac, plug in adapter, let it recognize the monitor, power on monitor

  • Dual Link DVI

    Hey guys,
I have a MacMini which is a couple of years old now, it has ONLY a DVI connector on the back, no display port.
I recently bought a Dell U271 monitor which is capable of going up to 2560x1440 using a Dual Link DVI cable under Linux.  If I take the same cable and plug it into the Mac Mini, it only goes up to 1920x1080.
Can it go higher?  Or does this question apply: https://discussions.apple.com/message/6672268#6672268 and it's only single dvi out?
    Thanks
    amir.

Also, switching to a single DVI cable gives me the option of using 2048x1152, but no higher.

  • Reccomendations for x800xt radeon card wthe dual link and DVI?

I was very unarmed when I posted my last question. I know know that the radeon x800xt MAC Edition is a dual link DVI and has one Apple DVC. I guess I can go two ways with this:
    1. I can get an ADC to DVI converter and run another monitor
    2. or I can get a DVi splitter and run two monitors
Apple's help desk doesn't support x800xt, so I called a local apple store for advice. It was recommended that I do not split the DVI into two monitors.
Through my reserch I have been getting conflicting info:
Can I get away with a dual DVI or should I go with the ADC to DVI adapter.
I hope this makes more sense. If anyone has run two monitors off of a single DVI let me know the success rate.
    Thanks.

    2. or I can get a DVi splitter and run two monitors
A DVI splitter will put the same picture on two monitors (which should have the same resolution).
