Single mode Fiber SX GBIC

Looking for specifics on exactly what issues would arise when you find a singlemode fibe connected to an multimode SX GBIC.Anything more than a larger loss than what would happen when a 50 micron and 62.5 micron cables are connected together?

Loss would be the biggest concern.
In addition to the much smaller apreture (8.3 micron vs 50 or 62.5 micron), the method of transmission ( the "mode") is quite different between the two.
If you're looking at short jumper lengths (~6-12 feet), it may work: Anything beyond that probably will not.
You should also check that both endpoints are using the same frequency (850nm, 1310nm, etc.).
Good Luck

  • Transitioning to Single Mode Fiber

    Hello,
We need to install new fiber to some new buildings in our school district. I want to be able to use current switches that I have in the old portable buildings that will be turned down this summer. My idea was to use Single Mode Fiber for these new buildings as long as the speed between the IDFS and MDFS is 1GB.
So I assume I need new transceivers ? Which ones will work with the models below mentioned?
My "Corebuilder" is WS-C4506 and my switches are 3750G 24 ports.I only need 6 transceivers, 3 for the WS-C4506 and three for 3 switches.
Eventually when we replace the switches then we'll go to 10GB but then I will need 10Gb transceivers but that will be another project for another day, I guess.
Any help will be much appreciated.

What is the distance of the single-mode cable?

    Part number is:  GLC-LH-SMD
You will also need to get SM patch cords.

  • Can I run VSS over Single-Mode fiber long range?

So I have 2 Cat 6509 currently in the same room and I use VSS. I would like to split these 2 switches up geographically on the campus and they would be approximately 2500' apart. I plan to user single-mode fiber with 2 10G LR links on each switch. Any help would be appreciated!

As Leo also noted yes that will work fine. It doesn't matter what optic (LR,SR, etc) you use as long as the VSL comes up you are fine
what you have to be care full with is that now you have to use single mode for one of  the uplink ports coming from your access switches

  • SFP with LC connector to be used with SC single mode fiber termination (Cisco2960S)

    Hi,
I have a question for a Cisco CATALYST WS-C2960S-24TS-L with SFP GLC-LH-SM (LC connector).
The problem is that we have an SC single mode fiber termination.
Is there any chance to provide with an SFP with SC connector. In case not, what alternatives do I have? Is there any Cisco recommended SC-LC converter/cable?
    Thanks a lot for help,
    Dario

You could get a fibre patch cable with LC terminal ends.

  • Connecting a 100 Base FX transceiver to single mode fiber

I'm looking to connect to an ISP circuit. The fiber run is single mode and they have a 100 Base FX transceiver on their end.
I've looked up the specifications on that transceiver and it say's it should only be run on SMF.
Anyone had any success with this?

    You're welcome.
For a VERY short run your MIGHT be able to get a SM transceiver to work over MM fiber.
The coherent light ("single mode") from the laser that launches into much larger core of the multimode fiber (usually 50 or 62.5 microns vs 9 micron for SM and having different propagation and dispersion characteristics) may "punch through" over short distances.
I wouldn't do it in any production environment though as it would likely be unstable in the long term (and is definitely not how the equipment is designed to work).

  • Single mode fiber to Multimode SFP

Kindly check diagram..is it working in live environment?
two buildings connected with Single mode OFC...on both side LIU SC Connector (Single mode) -- On both end we have to connect Router/ Firewall - both have Multimode SFPs.

    Won't work.
If your fibre run is SM then your SFP on your firewall should be SM.

  • Single mode LC to ST adapter

    Hello,
We currently have a cisco 2911 and have been handed a 1000/Mb single mode fiber with an ST connector from our service provider. I am not able to find any modules that support this type of interface for our router (most of them are LC). I dont have much experience with fiber but I found an adapter that converts LC to ST (http://www.comtrol.com/pub/products/product/pid/324). Would this be a good idea? Also, would I be correct in using this type of module?
    Cisco GLC-LH-SM
    Thank you for your help.

That's a very common use case. You should verify with your provider that their end is expecting an LH-specification laser from your end - in most cases they are but it's always good to check.
We very commonly use LC to ST (or LC to SC) jumpers between customer equipment and the patch panel where the provider's fiber is terminated, usually from the building riser or demarcation point (also known as demarc) to the outside plant.

  • Explain about transparent mode, single mode, multiple context mode

You can explain about the differents of transparent mode, single mode, multiple context mode in ASA 5500? Thank you very much.

Great question. Hope the below helps:
Transparent Mode: In this mode, the ASA will filter traffic without requiring L3 on the ASA. This means that in your config you will not put IPs on the interfaces to be used for traffic filtering. Thus, filtering is transparent to the traffic as the traffic isn't directly routed to the firewall. Think of it like you have a server plugged into a switch. In transparent mode, you place the ASA between the server and the switch and no configuration change is required to the server. In routed mode, you place the ASA in the same physical location between the server and switch, but have to change the server to use the ASA as a default gateway.
Single Mode: Default mode of an ASA. The ASA acts as a single firewall and all interfaces are provisioned to be managed through a single firewall configuration.
Multiple Context Mode: The ASA is split into multiple virtual configurations. With the ASA now virtualized, you provision the physical interfaces on the ASA to the virtual firewall configured. Each context has it's own configuration seperate from the rest of the firewall. Multi-context is meant for enterprises to invest in a single piece of hardware and scale it for use as multiple security devices.
Hope this helps. Let me know if you have anymore questions!

  • Osx stuck in single mode, how do I get out please

I have a Mac Pro OSX mountain lion, stuck in single mode, not sure of administrative account so just want to get out of single mode .it displays right now...display all 1475 possibilities?(Y or no) I hit No and it repeated I don't want to Press yes unless I know what's going to happen. can someone please Help Me.I just want to get out of here so I can take it to the Apple store tomorrow

If you cannot login you will have to go back to single user mode in order to reset a password.
    Follow the instructions here:
    http://www.macyourself.com/2011/08/20/how-to-reset-password-for-mac-os-x-10-7-li on/
    excerpt:
Shut down your Mac and turn it back on while holding down the Command and S keys at the same time until your see a black screen with white text. This is known as Single User mode.
You can skip this step, but it’s recommended that you don’t because it will check the consistency of your hard drive. At the prompt, type fsck -fy and press Enter.
Once the disk check is complete and the prompt returns, type mount -uw / and press Enter.
Type launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.opendirectoryd.plistand press Enter.
Type ls /Users and press Enter. All of the usernames on the computer will be listed, which is helpful if you don’t know or remember what these are.
Type dscl . passwd /Users/username password while replacing username with one of the users displayed in the previous step and replacing password with the new password of your choice. Press Enter. You will likely get an error message about a file or directory not being found – it’s safe to ignore this.
    Type reboot and press Enter.

  • Invalid node structure, files are visible in single mode

I did something stupid today. First i ran my mac until there was no disk space, resulted in failing booting up. Went into single mode and did a mount command and deleted some big files. And now the disk check is failing and still not able to boot ios. All the files showes up in single mode, but not sure how to proceed. When running fsck it gives invalid node structure error. Marry x-mas :) any ideas?

You might try using Disk Warrior to fix the error, but Disk Utility cannot. Short of DW you will need to repartition and reformat your hard drive unless the Recovery HD partition is still usable. If it is then you can do the following:
Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • PT880-Neo, Won't run in Dual, only Single mode

I have two 512 pairs of RAM (DDRAM 512M|PC-3200 991093 MUSHKIN R) that won't show up in CPU-Z or the POST message as running in Dual mode. It'll only show in single mode. I've tried every combination of slots (i.e. 1 & 3, 2 & 4, etc, etc) to no avail. I've also tried adjusting the BIOS to specify dual channel as well as letting it "auto" adjust. I've tried changing the RAM ratio's 1:1, 5:4, etc with all of the above combinations. Any suggestions would be appreciated....
PS. Bought the board two weeks ago. Haven't checked to see if there is a BIOS update. Don't see that as a reason it won't work since it ships as a Dual DDR 3200 compatible board.
    My rig:
    PT880-Neo LSR

  • Converting Multi mode Fiber 100Mbps to FastEthernet

Please advise me! I have an install of one possibly two 4003 L-3 switch as core, and several 2950 access switches installed around the campus. The customer wants 100Mbps Multi mode Fiber cable to connect to the cabinets in the different buildings on campus. Reason for this is the distance from the core switch to the various buildings exceeds 100 and even 200 meters. Can the 100Mbps MMF be converted in the cabinet to connect to FastEthernet ports on the 2950?

Yes, you can. There are a number of companies that make media converters, including BlackBox (www.blackbox.com) and Signamax (www.signamax.com).
If you look around you can find pretty much anything-to-anything (within reason).

  • Display screen single mode question

    Hello,
Looks like my friend tampered with the display mode settings of my mac and now when I turn it back on the desktop comes on but with no icons or menus. When I scroll the mouse all the way to the right I can hear the clicks of menus being opened. Seems that the screen is in dual mode and I need to switch back to single mode.
    How can I do this?

Every Mac since the Mac II has been shipped with the ability to support an "Extended Desktop" made from multiple displays. This option is only activated when multiple display cards are available, into which multiple sections of the Extended desktop can be drawn.
If this option has been activated on your Mac, it is possible only when you have more than one display card or a two-headed display card.
When Extended desktop is activated, additional Controls will appear in "Monitors and Sound" or "Monitors" Control Panel. In particular, the ( Arrange ) button will be visible. Clicking this button will give you an additional display showing the multiple screens, with the proportional desktop sizes (in pixels) and their relative positions on your bench. One display will show a representation of the MenuBar, and that tiny MenuBar can be dragged to any of the other displays. An Identify button will draw a number in the center of each Physical display and the same number on the screen presentation to help identify which is which.
I have always thought this was a great feature, very well-behaved, and works with almost every Application. But honestly, if you are not using this on a daily basis, you are better off pulling out the extra display card entirely (which will put the MenuBar back on the only display and eliminate the problem of "losing" the mouse cursor off the edge of the display).
