Single processor vs dual core

Hi all, hope this is the right place to put this post.
I'm finally about to take the plunge and get a new mac pro, putting my old G4 out to graze.
My question is, which machine is the best? A single processor or dual core?
I work mainly with photoshop, illustrator, indesign, painter and increasingly flash and dreamweaver.
It's going to cost me a couple of thousand so I need to get my choice right.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi northey;
It all depends on how intensely you use the apps you listed.
If you just dabble in them never doing anything very intense then single processor will probably be sufficient.
If on the other hand you use these apps to their fullest and with great intensity then the dual processor would be the better choice.
A second point if you use the apps professional to make money then the dual processor would be the better choice since time is money.

  • Processor question - Dual core vs. single core.

I currently have an Aspire 6930 laptop that I bought about a year ago on clearance from Best Buy.  I'm quite happy with it.  It has an Intel Core 2 Duo processor (2.0 GHZ, 800MHz, FSB, 2 MB L2 cache), 3 GB DDR2, 320 GB HDD if that means anything.  I'm not a computer geek so really don't know much about this stuff.
Our old laptop is a modular laptop (about 4 years old) which my husband is using (I won't let him mess with my Aspire - long story) and it's pretty much falling apart.  None of the USB ports work, the CD/DVD RW is broken, one of the hinges is busted so it won't close properly and it runs slower than a snails pace as he's dowloaded any and all "speed up your PC"  and "diagnose your PC" programs from the web - if it's on the web it must be true, right????   Anyway, I've taken pity on him and have decided to try to buy him a new laptop as a combination 10 year anniversary/42nd birthday/Christmas present.  Money is a HUGE issue as I'm a SAHM and have been pinching pennies and clipping coupons from the grocery money to try to come up with some funds for this surprise.  I'd like to stay around $400.
I've found this one at Best Buy and it has good reviews....  http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Acer+-+Aspire+Laptop+with+AMD+Athlon%26%23153%3B+Single-Core+Processor/9...
But it says it has a single core processor.  What exactly is the difference with single core vs. duo core???
We are not gamers.  DH basically uses the computer to surf the web, watch Youtube video's, upload and download photo's, burn DVD's, etc.  He does talk with family overseas so I would need/like to add a webcam.
I was also looking at this Asus model...  http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Asus+-+Laptop+with+Intel%26%23174%3B+Pentium%26%23174%3B+Processor+-+Mid...
But the Asus has a Pentium processor which I've heard isn't the best????  Also, it's over $150 more.  Is the duo processor and increase processor speed (1.6GHz vs 2.1 GHz) really going to increase the speed/response time significantly for what we do on the computer??  An extra $150 is going to be really tough for me to come up with but if it will truly make a significant difference I will try to find it somewhere.
    Your thoughts/recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks for the input.  We really don't have the space for a desktop which is why the laptop worked so well for us.  The only place to put a desktop is on the kitchen table and then we are always taking it apart when family come for dinner (which is often).  I thought of netbook, but it does seem so limited.  My husband is an amateur photographer and I would like the larger screen so that if he decides to persue this he would be able to do some basic photo editing, etc.
I think I will go with the dual core processer.  BB has an HP that is $429
     http://www.bestbuy.com/site/HP+-+Laptop+with+Intel%26%23174%3B+Pentium%26%23174%3B+Processor+-+Black...
and then another HP that is $499
     http://www.bestbuy.com/site/HP+-+Laptop+with+Intel%26%23174%3B+Pentium%26%23174%3B+Processor+-+Piano...
and I can't seem to find the difference??????   Except the cheaper on has more RAM???  Doesn't seem to make sense.
    Thoughts on the HP???

  • Migrating from single processor to dual processor Callmanager

    Hi Networkers,
had anyone install a Callmanager 4.1 dual processor version of CM4.1-K9-X345D= before in a single CPU in a dual processor capable server before.
Can it work in the first place?
Had anyone successfully migrate it to a dual-processor later on?

I dont think there is any difference in Callmanager software for a dual processor versus single processor server. For 7845 (dual processor) the hardware detection disks may be different from the one for single processor (7825, 7835)
Migrating from one to another is as easy as taking a BARS backup from one server, build the other server to the same version and restore it. (Make sure server name and ip are the same for both servers)

  • A6m processor disable dual core

Hello! A laptop HP 2310er, A6 processor 4400 m, there is a possibility to disable Dual Core, as the fan when overclocking is hampered?
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    Hi Denis1882,
There is no way to disable the switchable graphics. With no options in the BIOS, and the software doesn't have the options to change it you will have a dynamic only setup. The graphics are controlled by the Radeon GPU. It will switch automatically if needed. Here is a document on the switchable graphics on Notebooks configured with Dual AMD GPUs.
    Hope this is helpful.

  • SQLSvrStdCore 2014 SNGL MVL 2Lic CoreLic on a Single Processor Server (4 Cores) How many licenses needed ?

    Hi Guys...
I am abit confused with the latest SQL Server processor licensing and this Core Factor Table.
Am thinking of putting in a new SQL Server on a HP Server with a single
Intel® Xeon® E5-2407 v2 (4 core, 2.4 GHz, 10MB, 80W) Processor. How many of the (SQLSvrStdCore 2014 SNGL MVL 2Lic CoreLic) licenses would I need to purchase for the above Server ? Will not be virtualised.
Also with this license am I entitled to use SQL Server 2008r2 instead on this Server ?
    Thanks

  • Intel Dual Core Processors

I know that the new iMacs have Intel Core 2 Processors in them, and I am considering buying one next summer. It will run at a speed of 2.4 GHz. I have just one question on speed. When a processor is "dual core", does it have two cores running at 2.4 GHz each, or is it two cores running at 1.2 GHz each to total 2.4 GHz?
P.S.- This does not affect my descision of buying a Mac.

No it's not the same as having a 4.8GHz single processor. Like Duane said the total processor speed is 2.4GHz. However with 2 cores it's just like having 2 processors running at 2.4GHz each. This means the system can handle multiple tasks very well but the over all processor speed is still 2.4GHz. How much better than a single processor this is solely depends on what kind of applications you are running. Some applications are written to use multiple cores and some are not. Over all Mac OS X is designed to use multiple cores and practically all of Apple's applications will as well. So even in the case of a particular Application that can only uses 1 processor, the benefit is the rest of your Apps including the system can still be utilizing the other core simultaneously.
When comparing the C2D to a faster clocked Pentium 4, besides it being multi-core, it also has a much more efficient architecture. It creates less heat and has a larger on chip cache. Both equates to a better performing chip even at a lower clock speed. However real time speed differences will again completely depend on what you are running in comparison.
As for the video GPU you might take a look at these comparisons:

  • 2.7ghz Dual Core verses Single Core

Hi, I have a Pro Tools system with PCI audio cards that I sunk quite a bit of money into. Needless to say, I'm stuck in PowerMac purgatory until I come up with the cash to make a total PCIe conversion. With that being said, I am now trying to determine what the absolute fastest (dare I say the best) PowerMac was before Apple moved on to greener pastures. What I've been able to find with some light research is that they built the obvious 2.7ghz Dual Core machine but also momentarily built a 2.7ghz Single Core machine for some reason. Can anyone shed some light on the advantages/disadvantages between the two? Thanks!

You have received misinformation. The dual processor (not dual-core) model was the only one offered. Only the 1.6 GHz and 1.8 GHz machines were ever offered with a single-processor.
All G5s at 2.5 GHz and above were also liquid cooled, so you may want to take that into account. Should one of them develop a leak, the repair bill is astronomical, assuming you can't coax Apple into fixing it as a design defect.

  • POwerMac G5 Dual Core vs Dual Processor

Am thinking about upgrading my G4 computers and going to the G5 Powermac. More than likely a dual processor or dual core. What is the difference between the dual processor and dual core? Is there any difference between these re: efficiency and how they work overall?

A "dual processor" refers to two physically distinct and separate chips. A "dual-core" refers to 2 processors on a single chip, often sharing certain resources (eg cache, memory, etc).
As far as I know, the only dual processor G5 Apple currently offers, is the Quad, or 2 dual-cores. The 2 GHz & 2.3 GHz machines, have only a single chip with dual-cores (2 processors on each chip), to the best of my knowledge.
To the best of my knowledge, having separate chips is better whenever possible, than multiple-cores (processors) on a single chip, because multiple cores have to share resources.
However, if you can only have a single chip, multiple-cores (2 processors) are advantages. It won't double your productivity, but should give it least a 40-60% boost. This assumes that the specific software you are running, takes advantage of multiple cores. A lot of software does not take advantage of multiple cores, and having a multiple-core machine is a waste.

  • How to use Real time execution trace toolkit with Dual-core processor??

    hi there
    the situation as follows:
i have a computer (PC and Laptop) types with Dual-core processors, and am trying to do simulation using Multi-core technology and based on different simulation scenarios...starting from sequantial processing,.......Piple lining processing strategy. so that i can differentiate the time delay between those types of processing based on (Using 1 processor then dual-core processor Computers)
my question is: As i read through Ni's white papers i saw many notes refer to Real-time execution trace toolkit to investigate the (processing-time , etc) of multi-core processors in processing diffenent algorithms. My algorithms are to be run on 1 computer with dual-core processor BUT, not in real time environments, that is ( No hardware to be connected to my pc) only algorithms running on my pc....
So, is it possible to use Real time execution trace toolkit  or anyother tools in LabVIEW to show processing-delays and/or anyother timing critical issues without using my application for  real- time hardware.???
in other words: how to use Real time execution trace toolkit  in non-hardware and/or real-time scenarios???
    please help me in this.
Any suggestion, comments, feedback.....is absolutely highly appreciated
    thanks a lot in advance
    Labview Lover

    Hey,
The Realtime Execution Trace Toolkit only works for NI RT Targets.
But you can use the Desktop Execution Trace Toolkit, just search for it under ni.com.

Having some odd problems with my DVD drive in my G5 2x2.66 GHz Dual Core.
If I put a DVD in the tray the DVD player launches and the DVD window is completely screwed up. It perspective is screwy and the image is mangled as well. It also stall my OS so I get the spinning beach ball of death. To get a DVD to load I have to put it in the drive and then do a crash restart using the power button.
    What gives? Any ideas?

  • Envy 17-j050ex is it quad core or dual core

    Hello,
the HP envy-j050ex. in the specs page of the link below mentioned that it's processor is dual core.

and @ intel website they said that the processor intel-core-I7-4702MQ is 4 cores per 8 threads in the link below.
     http://ark.intel.com/products/75119/Intel-Core-i7-4702MQ-Processor-6M-Cache-up-to-3_20-GHz

    Hi,
Intel® Core™ i7-4702MQ is a quad-core processor. And your link shows 4 cores - quad is 4. By the way a Q also means Quad.

  • Processor / number of cores

just a thought is is better to have [2x physical processors with dual cores = quad core] or [1x physical processor with 4 cores = quad core] ?? please give me some thoughts.

    http://www.pugetsystems.com/articles.php?id=23
Following these benchmarks logically, one physical processor with 4 cores would be better than two dual core processors.
    Hope this helps!

  • Labview 7.1 and Dual Core Processors

    Hi,
I was wondering if anyone has encountered any problems using Labview
    7.1 and the newer dual-core processors. I have a Dell Dimension DXPO51,
2.8 GHz Pentium D with 1 GB ram. There is NO virus software or any
other non-essential programs running in the background. The computer is
totally dedicated to controlling a machine.
Other NI boards installed: PCI-6221 for analog inputs, PCI-6602 for
reading encoders, PCI-7352 Motion Control board to control 2 motors.
    The problem:
Periodically when I start my program, it locks up and I get the "Tell
Microsoft about this problem..." screen. After it exits out of Labview
and I restart, the Run arrow is not broken but the program will not run
until I make a change on the block diagram. Then I can run again.
Doesn't happen all the time, doesn't happen after running after a
certain amount of time, doesn't happen after a particular change is
made (i.e. adding case statements, adding an event, etc.). In other
    words, totally random.
I have tried totally uninstalling ALL National Instruments software,
including cleaning the registry, and re-installing everything. Didn't
    help.
The machine will be shipping with the executable file only but I'm still leary of problems arising due to this issue.
Any help or suggestions of things to try would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Teri

    Hi Teri,
I've seen scattered reports of users having trouble with dual-processor
machines with earlier versions of LabVIEW, though I'm not aware of
verified solutions in those cases.  The dual-processor operation
should be completely transparent to LabVIEW, although I know XP has had
some difficulties in providing the abstraction correctly.  A
workaround that has been successful in the past is to set the processor
affinity for LabVIEW to a single processor.  This should eliminate
the dual-processor nature of the system from consideration.  If
the problem still recurs after that, then the issue stems from another
source and we can investigate further.  Does it show this behavior
with any program (or just by opening the LabVIEW environment)?
How often does this occur (10%, 50% of the time)?
    Cheers,
    Matt Pollock

  • Unexpected reboot during simulation using multisim on AMD dual core processor

We are using NI-multisim 10 in a classroom environment and are experiencing sudden reboots during simulation without giving any error or warning. This happens on multiple machines, all being Dell Optiplex 740 with AMD DC 2Ghz as processor. Since these problems happen so frequently, making  teaching quite impossible, we have shifted PC-room and are now using older machines. On these machines - Dell GX280 using intell P4HT-2,8 Ghz - we experience no more problems.
Is this reboot problem related to the article :  Unexpected Errors with DAQ Device on AMD Dual Core Machine  (http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/9CE22FE099AFB8BF862572FF007A5D45) and what do we have to do to fix this problem?

    Nic
Can you verify your driver versions? Make sure that you are running the latest versions of NI drivers to ensure proper compatibility. If possible, you might try upgrading to multisim 11. If this does not solve the issue, try the single processor workaround in outlined in the following KB:
    http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/D0FC3BE7D9F331398625731A005D76B8?OpenDocument
Altough it is surely decreasing the performance of the system, certain cases have shown that there is no other possible workaround unfortunately.
