Single Project Won't Load - Eternal Beach Ball - File too large?

I had just finished putting in the last still image in a project in iMovie last night when all of a sudden, my whole computer crashed. Another friend had been working on the same project on my machine and had mentioned that occasionally iMovie would randomly glitch but she didn't mention any crashes.
Now when I try to get to that particular project, I get the beach ball and it never goes away. I eventually force-quit the program.
I've cleared preferences files (which allowed me to load videos again, at first it was just sitting in this suspended state of "loading" but would never do anything) and deleted old movies and projects. This is the ONLY project that won't open.
I have 42.16GB available on my HD so I don't think space is an issue. (I could be wrong.) Again, I had just finished the project when everything went wrong.
I have searched the forums for answers and nothing seems to really match my issue. I've tried their suggestions anyway but nothing seems to be helping. (The deleting of preference files did solve the issue of nothing loading, however.)
I tried to copy the project file onto a disc so that I could maybe switch machines but that proved ineffective.
Help?

In searching other forums, I've seen a plethora of ideas but no real common thread. Someone said that trashing things before a movie is done will corrupt it. I don't believe I initially trashed anythinng necessary for the movie but now I have. Is all hope now lost?

  • Project won't load! Spinning beach ball at opening screen.

So my project is multi-camera, has all externally synced audio, and about 45 min of footage in current timeline. When I created the project, and edited the elements within, all worked fine. But now when I try to reopen the project, I get the spinning beach ball hanging at the opening screen for hours. It just shows "loading project into timeline" forever. It just doesn't want to open. Anyone run into these problems before??

    Hi Chris Lee 310,
I'm sorry to hear you are having issues with your Final Cut project.
The article below may be able to help you with this issue.
Click on the link below to see more details and screenshots.
I've quoted some helpful highlights for you:
Final Cut Pro X: Troubleshooting basics
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3893
    7. Hide Events and Projects
You can isolate issues with events and projects by hiding your events and projects and then un-hiding a project or event. Do this one at a time until you are able to reproduce the issue and identify an affected event or project. For detailed information on hiding events and projects see

  • When i open final cut pro x  when it starts loding the projects it shows the spining beach ball and is stuck wat can i do?

when i open final cut pro x  when it starts loding the projects it shows the spining beach ball and is stuck wat can i do?

Possible  corrupted project or media fies. Here's what I'd suggest.
First trash preferences. If that doesn't work…
Move your Final Cut Projects folder into a folder named Hidden Folder. See if FCP then launches. If it doesn't hide your Final Cut Events folder. Once FCP launches successfuly, create a test event and project.
To track down the problem, successively move load events and projects from hideen to their proper location and open FCP. When and if you get the crash you have hopefully located the problem.
The easiest way to do this is to purchace Event Manager X ($5).
    Good luck.

  • IMovie 09 projects won't load HELP!

Hiya, i have searched all over theplace to try to find out why my projects wont load in IM 09, to no avail.
The below link seems to be the bestbit of information i have worked on.
I have no 3rd party plug in's in thequicktime folder.
I have deleted the last few moviesimported (despite the fact these worked and were later exported)
iMovie will load on another acct thati created, but wont be able to work with whats imported into this acct unless ire upload?
iMovie does start up, i see all myclips i have imported, but none of my projects won't load.
I do have a fair bit of footagethere, but it was working fine when i had a lot more in there (before deletingafter i had used it).

I have had the same problem and found that if I opend up iPhoto where the videos were placed from, it cleared up the problem. Crazy, huh? Plus, you have to make sure that the iPhoto account is opened to the correct one...this is done by Option Clicking on iPhoto and choosing which account you have the active videos in.

  • My i-Pod Classic 160GB won't load MPEG-4 video files.

My i-Pod Classic 160GB won't load MPEG-4 video files, a message says "file type not supported." I've checked the file types I have been able to watch in i Tunes and these are MPEG-4 video files and these work ok. Any help?...Thanks.

The files didn't actually contain any video! They were corrupted.

  • Project won't load after upgrade to 10.1.3

    Howdy,
I'm working on a series of videos, each in a separate project, but all in the same library.
I did the bulk of the editing in 10.1, but recently upgraded to 10.1.3. FCPX did it's usual "update projects and events" routine when I opened the library in 10.1.3 for the first time. All my projects appear to be fine, except one...
This project is about 30 minutes long, with a handful of different clips – nothing huge...  but it won't load. I get the spinning beach ball for a few minutes, then a system alert saying I've run out of application memory. I check Activity Monitor, and sure enough, FCPX is using over 12GB of RAM! It seems FCPX gets stuck in some sort of loop while trying to load this project, and I'm not sure what to do about it... Any help would be appreciated.
    System info:
    iMac
    OSX 10.9.5
    3.5GHz Core i7
    16GB RAM

OK, I think I resolved my issue. I hadn't noticed that there was one missing media file in the project that wouldn't open. I didn't notice because normally, FCPX would open the project and swap a "missing media" icon for the absent file in the timeline, but in this case it simply refused to open the project. I re-imported the missing file, and now there are two of them in my media browser. If I delete any one of them, they both disappear... Odd.
In any case, my project opens now and that's good. What I don't understand is what happened to that missing file in the first place. I didn't delete it or move it. It seems to have been kicked out of the FCPX database upon upgrade to version 10.1.3, which by itself is a little troubling... and I fear there may still be similar database issues that I haven't discovered yet lurking in other projects
Here's hoping all of FCPX's "growing pains" get resolved soon.
    Thanks for your help, Russ.

  • After downloading iTunes 11.3 for Mac, I get the eternal beach ball

I get that beach ball and I can't do anything else.  I restarted several times but no change.  I connected iPod but it doesn't even appear.  I have Mac OS-X 10.9.4.  I need help!  How do uninstall 11.3 and go back to the older version?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • Contents of one network folder won't display - spinning beach ball

I have an eMac on a network running 10.3.9 which, even though the user is properly authenticated on the network, it will not display the contents of one single folder. All the other folders' contents display perfectly and the user can interact with the server and its' contents without any problems. All the other users on the network can interact with the folder in question without any problems, which tends to lead me back to a problem on this one eMac.
The folder in question is inside the main share and all the other folders are as well. Again, the user can traverse the directory structure without any problems. She can use any file, read, write, save, change, delete any file without any problems in any folder EXCEPT in this one folder.
When the user tries to access the folder, the result is the perennial spinning beach ball.
I've tried all the usual tricks. Cache cleaning, directory repairs, permission rebuilds, prebinding rebuilds, log file maintenance, etc., etc. to no avail. I'd appreciate your thoughts. Thanks.

Have you tried logging in with any of the other user's credentials from her system?
Also, have you tried a different user account on her system. (With either her or anyone else's login info for the server.)

  • Eternal beach ball after 10.8.5 Combo Update

Just installed the 10.8.5 combo update on my mac mini (2013, i7).
Everything was, of course, working perfectly with 10.8.4
Now I get the eternal spinning beach ball just before the login.
I've already verified the boot hard drive, repaired permissions, cleared the chaches, reset pram, reset smc, etc.
Pretty much everything I can do just shy of a clean reinstall (which would've taken less time).
Boots fine in sigle user and safe mode.
Only workaround has been to remove the physical ethernet connection (using wireless) and ensure the two usb bus powered devices -- a canon lide scanner, and an Asus USB DVD burner -- are disconnected prior to booting the computer. Symptoms that are widespread and linked directly to the .5 update and are not addressed in the supplementals.
Any other possible solutions or perhaps someone knows if apple is still working on the issue?
Unplugging USB devices is merely a hassle, but not one i'm going to live with. I will take the time to reinstall and stop with the 10.8.4 update if I have to. I'd rather not, but since there was nothing wrong with the system or hardware I have no problem with stopping there. the .5 update didn't include anything i needed.
Don't waste your time posting if you are going to advise me that it's something other than the update that borked things. It's the update and I've already confirmed it. It's not my software as i run nothing aside from MS Office and Adobe CS6 beyond what apple preinstalled. Unless you can specifically point to a conflict with the files in the update and either of those two packages, keep your opinions out of this discussion. If you can, i welcome the data.
    Thank you.

I also encountered this "spinning beach ball of death right when I'm supposed to see the login screen" issue. It happened to three of the laptops I manage (two MacBook Pro 13" retina, and one MacBook Pro 15" retina; all late 2012 models). The "spinning beach ball of death" symptoms started manifesting themselves right after I performed "software update" on them.
The symptoms: I get the spinning beach ball (or sometimes just stuck with a grey screen) when waking from sleep, when switching users, right after a reboot, right after a cold boot, just as I was trying to get back to work after the screen saver kicked in ... it doesn't happen 100% of the time, but I'd say about 3/4 of the times I expect to see a login screen, I got the spinning beach ball of death (or the grey screen of death).
This is what I think solved the problem: Rebuilding the Spotlight Search Index.
    (Apple's How-To instruction here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2409 )
Be sure to disable screen saver, set "computer sleep" and "display sleep" timers to infinity before the start the rebuilt process (explanation below).
I also did other things like resetting PRAM, repairing disk permissions, rebuilding the directories with DiskWarrior, etc. But the best I could tell, it's the rebuilding of the Spotlight Search Index that actually did it. I speculate that the system, while trying to show you the login screen, was also trying to fetch some images or info (the users' login profile pictures, the background wallpaper, whatever), but somehow couldn't find the data and got stuck because of some issue with the Spotlight Search Index. So once the Spotlight Search Index is rebuilt, the "spinning beach ball" problem went away.
So which software update component broke the system? As counter-intuitive as it may seem, I'm pointing my finger at the component Apple calls the "Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update" version 5.01. As I mentioned earlier, I observed this problem on three different laptops, and I updated them weeks apart on multiple occasions ... I've gone days and weeks on two of them after the 10.8.5 Supplemental Update without problem, I've gonve days on another laptop after the Safari 6.1, Remote Desktop Client 3.7.0, iTunes 11.1.3 updates without problem. The only constant that applies across all three laptops was that right after the "Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update" version 5.01 was applied, the "spinning beach ball of death" symptoms started manifesting themselves. That's why I'm pointing my finger at the "Digital Camera RAW Compatibility" version 5.01 update as the prime suspect. (Secondary suspects, if I have to name them, would be the Safari 6.1, Remote Desktop Client 3.7.0, iTunes 11.1.3 updates.)
On rebuilding the Spotlight Search Index ... this is a long process. It's will likely take hours (depends on how much data you have on your drive). You don't want the screen saver or the display sleep or the computer sleep timer to trigger and lead you right back to the spinning beach ball while you wait for the Spotlight Search Idex to rebuild. That's why the recommendation to disable screen saver and set the sleep timers to "infinity" before starting the index rebuild process. If you try monitor the rebuild process by eyeing at the "mds" and mdworker" CPU utilization ... don't get faked out by the occasional lulls when the system shows you that "mds" and "mdworker" CPU utilizations are zeros. "mds" and "mdworker" appear to take short breaks once in a while, and that starts up in earnest again eating up close to 100% of CPU cycles when they work. Rebuilding the Spotlight Search Index is supposed to take "hours," so best guest, I'd say wait at least one hour, then check if "mds" and "mdworker" CPU utilization figures stay consistently close to zero for a few minutes before calling it done. I do not know of any better way to tell if the system has finished rebuilding the Spotlight Search Index.
All the above are based on my experience rescueing a grand total of THREE computers back from their software update-induced "spinning beach ball of death" problem. So granted it is a very small sample base. My apologies in advance if it turns out the above does not solve the problem for you. (I'm just going to skip the "Digital Camera RAW Compatibility" version 5.01 update going forward as I have no desire to "recreate the problem" just to test my hypothesis.)
    Good luck!

  • Some projects won't load full screen view?!?

I have about 10 projects (out of 130) that won't load in the full screen view if I enter the project and then try to enter full screen. The areas around the Aperture program window (menu bar and dock) turn black as if it were in full screen but the program window just sits there doing nothing as if I never clicked to enter full screen. If I try push F to exit full screen, the black disappears but my dock and menu bar do not return. At this point, I can't click on other projects and have to quit the program (just normal command-Q works fine) and re-open it to do anything.
What is strange is that if I click to view all my projects, enter full screen, and then double click on one of them that is giving me this problem, it will load the pictures fine. But it seems to hang up when I try to go to another project and I have to quit the program.
The 10 projects are all pictures taken within a 1 week trip and they include between 50-100 jpeg images each. They were imported into Aperture as part of my iPhoto library. No other pictures that came from iPhoto have this problem.
Things I have tried to fix the problem:
    1. Repair permissions on library and system
    2. Rebuild library
    3. Export originals from iPhoto and import into Aperture as a new project
    Any suggestions?
Edited to Add: If I double click a picture so it loads into "Viewer" mode, it seems to enter full screen mode fine when I press F, but the system hangs up and bogs down badly when I try to jump to another problem project from full screen mode. The Activity window says it's loading, but it never does. If I click on anything else, it just continues to say it's loading the first project I tried to switch to.

I have 4 GB of RAM in a 2.2 Ghz Santa Rosa MBP.
I don't believe it's an issue of needing to wait for it to load because it loads other projects perfectly. These 10 projects only have 50-100 jpegs (1.8 MB average file). I can enter and exit projects with 200 RAW files (5 MB average file) with absolutely no delay.
Additionally, it will never load the project. It will say it's loading in the Activity Window but never complete. I can't click to load anything else as the program basically locks up. But it's not really locked because I can Command-Q to exit and it closes properly.

  • Projects won't load

so i have been using iMovie a lot lately and have been satisfied with it. opened it one day and it suddenly won't load projects, so i deleted it then downloaded it off the app store (tried turning it off and on) once i turn on iMovie it "loads projects" and gives me the color wheel. the only thing i can do is force quit. any ideas?

I have had the same issue over the last couple of days.  Imovie just doesn't load up for me.  I tried trashing the preference/plist but it still doesn't respond.  any solutions?

Can't get my mail to load messages, shows it trying too but just spins. Can't get into my mail preferences either as I get the spinning ball and have to force quit mail.  Any suggestions?

Have you tried rebuilding the mailbox? Select the account in your Inbox, then choose Mailbox > Rebuild and wait for it to finish. Then restart Mail and see if the problem continues.

  • CS6 InDesign Won't Stop Spinning Beach Ball After Opening

My Mac was acting up tonight and it told me some InDesign-related files were damaged in the process. I doubt that.
More likely you need to press Shift+Z to fit the timeline to the project window.
(I have known it 'go off to the left' and then it looks as though the timeliine is emply).

  • IMac (early 2008) crashing/freezing/beach ball appearing too often

Hi - I'm new to the support community but am in need of advice/help for my iMac that is crashing with blue and/or white screens or freezing with unresponsive mouse/keyboard and a spinning beach ball.
It's been doing this for about 6 months, and 4 months ago I sent it to an Authorised Apple repair centre. They upgraded the HDD to 1Tb as disk space was just about used up and beefed the emory up from 4Gb to 6Gb. However, within the week, it was doing it again - and the repair centre dont want to help anymore (seperate issue) - hence the plea for help as, no suprise, its frustrasting me beyond belief - I'm now almost at the point of giving up the mac way of life
The iMac is a 24" Early 2008 machine (2.8 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo) running Mavericks at 10.9.1 (albeit the issues were there last summer before the upgrade). The machine wont run a hardware test with holding down the D or Alt D on boot up - it used to do this fine before the Mavericks upgrade
Appreciate anyone's steer/advice - my technical knowledge is quite low (hence going for the mac in the first place)
Ta in advance to any replies

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to gather information about the state of your computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it on this page. However, you should be cautious about running a program at the instance of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them.
Here's a summary of what you need to do: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait about a minute. Then paste some other text, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking  anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in your browser, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign ($) or a percent sign (%). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for your password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator rights.
The test may take up to a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. There is no indication of progress until it's done. Wait for the line "[Process completed]" to appear in the Terminal window. If you don't see that line within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report your results. No harm will be done.
When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." That's because the forum software falsely identifies something in the post as a violation of the terms of use. If that happens, please post the results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.
