Single toplevel synchronization folder ?

Hello,
I would like to know whether I can create a single iCloud synchronization folder that's synchronized when using multiple devices: desktop + macbook + PC laptop + iPhone.
Until now, reading webpages,  it's my impression that iCloud has several different categories to synchronize: mail, documents, etc.
I would like to use just 1 toplevel directory that I can choose, from which all files and subdirectories are synchronized.
Is that possible ( 1 synchronized toplevel directory ) or should I consider Wuala or SpiderOak as an alternative to do that ?
Thanks for the feedback.

    How do you delete [empty] a single file or folder from "Trash"?
    Can you "securely delete" just 1 item?

    A dangerous and incorrect shell command has been posted in this thread.
    NEVER empty the Trash in the shell (Terminal.) NEVER put anything in the Trash unless you intend to delete it immediately. If you do put something in the Trash and change your mind about deleting it, move it out or use the Put Back contextual menu item. Then empty the remaining items in the Trash as usual.

  • Synchronize folder command no longer works

    I have a folder on my Mac with almost 9000 photos in it, 2000 of which are in sub-folders.  I have been adding and removing files from this folder since LR 3, am currently using LR 5.
    I have always used "synchronize folder" on the root folder to update the contents of the library (I add and remove photos with other apps). Worked flawlessly.
    However, recently, every time I use the command it follows this sequence:
    1.  right-click, synchronize folder
    2. dialog comes up and indicates (for example) 38 added photos.
    3. I click synchronize.
    4.  Four images are added.  The progress bar goes to the end but does not complete.  I have left it for an hour or more to test.
    5. I quit the app, it alerts me the import is still in progress, i say ignore.
    6. re-open app, start over.  now of course it says 34 added photos.  Click Synchronize.
    7. all but 2 of those images import (32)!
    This happens without fail, every time.  What's going on? What can I do?
    This did not start with 5, started in 4.2.

    Dunno - sorry.

    Not sure the "right" way to remedy - I use Ottomanic Importer to bypass such quirks in Lr's native import/synchronization logic - beware it's one of the trickier plugins to setup/use - sorry.

  • LR3: Synchronize Folder a step back

    If I synchronize a folder that has several subfolders, I can no longer de-select any of the subfolders. This is a huge step back and I thought it would be resolved in the final version.
    Also, I really wonder why now there are those completely different dialogs for Import/Synchronize Folder and Import from Catalog. Doesn't make sense.
    Thomas

    I found a solution (at least in my case). It's so simple as this: just batch rename every problematic file using its own name within Lightroom. I don't know why, but after doing it LR doesn't find "new" pictures (already existing in the catalog).
    Hope this can help you.

  • Synchronize Folder ... does not work

    I am using Lightroom 4.1 on a PC. I have added some jpg photos to an existing folder already indexed Lightroom using Windows Explorer. In other words there were some photos in there and then I added some using Windows Explorer.
    When I right click on the folder in Ligntroom and select Synchronize Folder, a task box appears showing "Import new photos (8)”  so I make sure the box is checked.  So far so good.  When I click Synchronize, I get a box saying “No photos or videos were found to import”.
    When I do the same thing and also select “Show import dialog before importing” it shows there are no “New Photos” to add.   However, when you click the “All Photos” at the top of the box/screen it shows all the photos in that folder greyed out.  When you right click on the photo you cannot select “Import This”.
    Does anyone know why this is happening?   It is because the photos I want to sync in this folder are already indexed somewhere else in Lightroom?   Is there a way to select or unselect that setting?

    Lr is telling you that the files are already in the catalog. This may be because older files with same name already exist in catalog or that you've already imported the files into another location.

  • Synchronize folder: maximum file size?

    Greetings,
    I have noticed that the synchronize folder option seems to just hang on folders with more than about 1000 images in them. Smaller folders seem to work just fine. Is there a maximum size in numbers of files where the synchronize feature no longer works?
    Thanks in advance!

    OK, PROBLEM SOLVED:
    It appears that the folders that I was having problems with for synchronization were corrupt in Lightroom. They had designations that there were stacks in the folders which there were not. This was designated by the "+" and "/" symbols next to the folders. The synch feature would completely hang.
    After deleting and reimporting these "problem" folders all problems disappeared, the sych featured worked, and the symbols for stacks disappeared. Lastly, there was no limit on folder size for the synch feature to be functional.
    Thanks for all your help and hopefully this experience will help others with a similar problem...

  • How to change iTunes default synchronization folder?

    Because my disk C too small, I want to synchronize my iPad to another disk (for example D or E). How do I to change iTunes default synchronization folder?

    FYI, when the camera is on you can tap the middle icon in the lower left corner of the screen to select the folder which files will be saved to.
    Cheers!

  • LR2: Synchronize Folder doesn't read back changed .xmp metadata

    LR2 on Mac.
    My workflow for geotagging CR2 RAW files, which worked fine in LR 1.4:
    - Catalog Settings: Automatically write changes into XMP (but this can't always be trusted if you just imported them)
    - If needed, Save Metadata to force metadata to XMP
    - Run external tools that update GPS metadata in CR2 file
    - Unix 'touch' .xmp sidecar file to update its mod date (since LR doesn't see changes in CR2, probably thinking it is read-only)
    - Back in LR, Synchronize Folder
    Used to bring GPS data into LR, now doesn't notice any change.
    Workaround: Read Metadata from File (but less safe if you made any intermediate changes in LR, since Read seems to do a total metadata replace, whereas Sync seemed to be smarter).
    Any other ideas on how to get LR to notice GPS changes actually made in CR2 file?

    Another bit of info....   As I looked at this further, it seems to be occuring only on those photos where I previously ran camera raw from CS3. I've upgraded to CS5 but have not rerun camera raw since. I understand the camera raw engine in CS3 was different. Could this be involved? Could Lightroom be changing the metadata because the engine is updating the information and I have to save TO file to get this to synch?
    update about this camera raw engine possibilty..... it would not appear to be the answer. I have some files that synch even tho lightroom develop says they are using the 2003 process version. I have some files that are on the new version that won't synch.

  • Why doesn't "synchronize folder" pick up new images?

    Hi all.
    I edited a picture and saved it in the same directory, as a PNG.  On my next launch of Lightroom (2.1), I right-clicked on the folder and said "Synchronize folder".  The file still isn't shown in Lightroom.  If I pick "Show in Finder" on the folder, the PNG is right there and it opens up just fine in Preview when double-clicked.
    Is this a known defect?
    Thanks.

    "Lightroom is NOT an image browser! It is a photo management program.  Bridge is more like an image browser."
    A photo management program can't function effectively without an image browser.  I don't see that this point is even worth debating.  If you want to manage your pictures by looking at filenames and dates, go right ahead.  I think most people demand thumbnails these days.
    "It's design is such that it doesn't "expect" pictures to be plopped into its directories""
    That's poor design.  There are "professional" cameras that can transmit image files directly to a computer wirelessly as they're taken.  That's just one example of why pictures would be "plopped" into directories by exactly the customer that Lightroom is supposed to serve.  Having to baby-sit your entire directory structure manually is just amateurish programming.
    Photographers will often need to make adjustments to pictures, adjustments that Lightroom does not perform, thus the option to "edit in Photoshop" right there in the context menu.  After editing, any conscientious photographer will want to save the image in a lossless format.  It doesn't matter if that format doesn't carry metadata, because Adobe can (and already does) store additional information in a sidecar file.  Adobe could've added a lot of value by giving users the ability to retain selected metadata through the round trip from Lightroom to Photoshop.
    "It seems a little unreasonable to me to belabor something, demanding (almost) that the program be modified to meet your specific needs when those needs are outside the realm of normal photographic editing activities."
    So you're arguing that any function not offered by Lightroom isn't a "normal photographic editing activity".  I don't think you'll find wide consensus on what should and shouldn't be included in those activities.  Nor do I think that people will agree that image browsing isn't one of them.

  • Can I restore a single photo/photo folder from Time Machine/Time Capsule

    Hi
    So I'm usuing Time Machine to back up my MacBook to Airport Time Capsule.
    If I somehow lost a couple of photos and its taken a few months to realise, can I retrieve just these photos/photo folder or do I need to restore my whole photo library going back to a past date - and then how can I be sure which date to restore back to - is there anyway of actually viewing the photos for a certain date before restoring?
    And if the only way is to restore the whole library, what happens to any new photos that were added to the library between present day and the date I would be restoring back too?
    Would it be better to move my photos from the app Iphoto to a documents folder for future use?  This is assuming that in a documents folder you can view and just retrieve a single document...  Havent tried it yet but that was my understanding...
    Hope this makes sense
    Many thanks in advance

    Learn from Pondini, who knew more about Time Machine than anyone.

    See the green box for links for iPhoto instructions according to the version that you might have.
    Would it be better to move my photos from the app Iphoto to a documents folder for future use?
    No. Even if you did this, you would not be able to retrieve individual photos since iPhoto is a special type of package file.

  • Synchronize folder not working in Lightroom 5.7

    When I synchronize a folder in Lightroom 5.7 it shows 'Task completed', but nothing happens and Lightroom does not respond anymore. Any advice? Running on Windows 8.1..

    I found the issue: From the event viewer I found that there was a problem with a Wifi Scale that my pc was trying to connect to. After removing all references to that device in the registry and restarting windows, Lighroom was working again. Seems perhaps far fetched, but I tested after every small step I tried, and it sounds somewhat similar to the connected phone issues mentioned on the forum..

  • Single xml synchronize access

    I have a single XML file and my program have many calls can update it, potentially at close to the same time. ( I have [Fatal Error] Premature end of file]
    How i can synchronize access to the single xml file?

    Here my code:
    public static void update (String id, String child, String value) {
              try {
                   DocumentBuilder db = DocumentBuilderFactory.newInstance()
                             .newDocumentBuilder();
                   Document doc = db.parse(NetworkManagerGUI.xmlData);
                   org.w3c.dom.Node element = org.apache.xpath.XPathAPI
                             .selectSingleNode(doc.getDocumentElement(), "//node[@id='"
                                       + id + "']");
                   if (element != null)
                        ((Element) element).setAttribute(child, value);
                   TransformerFactory tFactory = TransformerFactory.newInstance();
                   Transformer transformer = tFactory.newTransformer();
                   transformer.setOutputProperty(OutputKeys.INDENT,"yes");
                   DOMSource source = new DOMSource(doc);
                   StreamResult result = new StreamResult(NetworkManagerGUI.xmlData);
                   transformer.transform(source, result);
              } catch (Exception ex) {

  • Impossible to import photos in 'Synchronize Folder' dialog. Bug?

    When I try to synchronize a particular folder in LR3, the dialog says there are 16 new photos in that folder. On the import screen however, these photos are only shown if I uncheck the 'Don't import Suspected Duplicates' tickbox. If I do that and import the photos's, they indeed show up double in the database. But, if I tick that box, no photo's for import are shown.
    I can find these photo's in LR using the filename. When I then use the 'Locate in Explorer' dialog in LR, they all ARE in that particular folder. Is this a bug? Is there a workaround? How do I get these photo's to show up in that folder?

    I upgraded to Lightroom 5.7 and I can do the import of the pictures.

  • Synchronize Folder problem - LR finds missing photos that aren't missing

    A bit of background:
    I decided to dive in and clean up a big 40K catalog I have. This involved:
    Moving images around
    Creating new folders
    Renaming existing folders
    Renaming all photos
    All of this was done within LR to avoid problems. But now, everything is working fine, LR does not complain that there are missing photos EXCEPT when I try to synchronize a folder.
    The strange this is there is no question mark on the images and when I use the Find Missing Photos, LR tells me that there are no missing photos.
    But when I try to synchronize a folder (any), it finds all the images as new images and suggests to remove the missing photos (both matching the exact number of images). Obviously I don't want to do that and loose my edits...
    I found some information here, it seems to be an old bug but no solutions work for me... I really don't want to go back and redo all this work. Is there a magic trick?
    Thanks!

    Thanks but this a completely different problem. You are referring to the "Treat JPEG files next to RAW files as separated photos" setting that I have unchecked purposely and I do not shoot RAW + Jpeg anyways.
    Your issue is a normal behavior. LR assumes that Jpeg+RAW shooters will only required the RAW to be imported in LR unless you change that setting.
    My problem was a very specific instance where the volume name did not match case with the folder names in LR. As soon as I fixed that, it went back to normal.

  • Synchronize Folder - Scan For Metadata Updates

    Can anybody explain to me, what exactly is supposed to happen when I am synchronizing folders and have "Scan for metadata updates" checked?
    What kind of metadata is searched
    (I notice that keywords are not synchronized)
    What action is supposed to be taken
    (write metadata to image, read metadata into catalog, any prompt before updates?)
    The manual isn't really specific about this, and by trying I haven't really found out what to expect.
    Thanks for any suggestions.
    Beat Gossweiler

    Basically, the folder is scanned for new or changed images. The metadata changes will include new or updated IPTC, Keywords, ratings, labels, develop adjustments, which will have been applied in an external app such as Bridge/Camera Raw. If the folder contains new images these will be identified as such. If an image has been removed from the folder but still remains in the catalog you will be notified and given the choice of removing it.
    Synchronise Folder does NOT save anything back to the actual files. If you have made a change to a file in Lightroom that change will NOT be applied to the actual file when Sync Folder is run. It reads the folder for externally applied changes/additions/omissions and subject to user choice will update the catalog accordingly.
