Siren Like Noise from SuperDrive with Windows Disc??

Hi, I was attempting to install a program from pinnacle for my Dazzle, but when I inserted the disc my drive made a very strange sound. At first I thought it was coming out of the speakers. It would not let me eject immediately. I tried on Mac and same thing happened, so it was not a driver issue. Surprisingly a DVD ran fine. The disc I was using was not cosmetically damaged.
Not a big deal but very odd:

http://creganfamily.com/temp/1274727679.mov
it is difficult to hear, I used my iPhone

That does not sound normal at all. The SuperDrives on both my BlackBook and first gen G5 iMac are a little louder than in my PCs, but there is no grating or scratching sound at all.
Are the disks scratched in any way? If so, definately take it in to Apple as there is something wrong. I would probably take it in anyway as I would hate for a disk to get scratched or stuck in there.

  • How can I quickly view pdf files like I can do with Windows Picture and Fax viewer for jpg files?

How can I quickly view pdf files like I can do with Windows Picture and Fax viewer for jpg files? I need to look at several thousand PDF files. It takes too long to open each one individually. The only thing I could think of is combining them into large groups and then using the Navigation index. But I like the way windows Picture and Fax Viewer does it because you can keep the files separate. Combining PDFs causes loss of individual file names. That would be a problem since I do need to have the individual file names.

Windows Picture and Fax Viewer is a DLL and is started via a rundll32.exe call and can't be set as an application to handle images in Firefox 3 and later versions.
Try to set Windows Picture and Fax Viewer as the default viewer in Windows, then it should be listed automatically in the Mozilla Firefox Browse dialog.

  • Clattering noise from Superdrive

My iMac G5 has started making a fairly loud clattering noise during wake from sleep and when ejecting an optical disk. It lasts about 1 second or so and is coming from the area next to the disk slot on the right side of the screen. I am assuming it's the superdrive making the racket. The superdrive itself has no problem reading and writing CDs and DVDs.
This is definitely a new phenomenon that just recently started. Aside from being disconcerting it is causing no functional problems. I use my iMac everyday in a home business and hate to have to lose it to be serviced. Has anyone else experienced this anomaly? Is there a way to fix this yourself?
Thanks for any friendly counsel on this!

I have the same loud electric razor-like noise while burning discs. Someone had mentioned previously they find it soothing or whatever, I certainly do not. It's actually quite emberrassing when people to whom I extoll Mac virtues are here when it happens. Far too loud and disconcerting for me. What is to be done for it? I hope this isn't my 2nd consecutive Mac with super-drive issues...

  • How do i get my ipod to go from syncing with windows 7 to windows 8?

Bought new songs and they won't sync onto my ipod when I plug it in because my new computer is Windows 8 and my old one was Windows 7. It syncs the songs from 7 but not the new ones I downloaded with windows 8

Move all of your content from the old computer to the new computer.
Then connect the iPhone to the new computer and sync.

  • Can you use a Apple USB Superdrive with Windows

    Hello,
I frequently finding myself wanting to use my Apple USB Superdrive with my work computer but havent had any luck being able to load CDs to play or burn.
If anybody has a solution or information please advise.
Windows XP Pro, Version 2002, Service Pack 3
    Thanks,
    Will

It should work, as long as the drive is getting sufficient power.  It is possible that your Windows PC is not providing enough power through the USB port.

  • How do I stop iTunes from starting with Windows?

    Hi there.
After installing iTunes 7, it launches with Windows despite there being no registry entries or Startup folder entries. I also can't find any preference settings in iTunes to change this. I don't want iTunes starting with Windows as it's a CPU hot and system drag as it is without it slowing down my startup.
What's even more odd I find is that, if for whatever reason iTunes does NOT start with Windows, I don't have an Internet connection. It's strange but the connection between the two is absolute. If I reboot and iTunes starts with Windows, I have my Internet back.
Any suggestions? I can't find anything through searches. I've also checked for viruses, spyware, backdoors, etc.
    Thanks.

  • Loading CS2 from laptop with Windows XP to new laptop with Windows 7

Hello, I just purchased a new laptop with Windows 7 on it, and am wondering if I can install my CS2 software onto it. I had it on my old laptop which had Windows XP. I don't see
Windows 7 on my installation CDs as an OS I can use the software with. Not wanting to buy all new as I am a novice user, not a professional graphics person. Can I
load this version on my new laptop?

  • HP Officejet Pro 8500 A910 Premium will not fax from computer with Windows 8

My printer worked great on Win XP and I could fax directly from the printer or from the computer.  I installed Windows 8 32 bit (I'm running an older system that works fine for everything I use it for -thank you very much), and downloaded the latest greatest HP driver & software for Win 8 32 bit.  Everything works perfectly, except faxing from the computer.
If I run the fax test from the printer, the fax test PASSES.  If I run the fax test from the computer, the fax test PASSES.
If I put documents in the printer feeder and use the printer fax functions, it faxes beautifully.
It is only when I fax from the computer, the screen pops up with a status of spooling, then the status turns to Cancelled every time.
It always worked on Win XP.
The FAX printer and FAX driver for the FAX printer showed up in Control Panel automatically when I installed the updated drivers/software from HP.  All the properties on the FAX printer look good.
I tried a usb connection, and a network ethernet connection, with the same results.
Printing and scanning all work fine.  I really like this printer, and I would like it even more if I could figure out how to get it to fax a document from the computer.
When I say fax from the computer, I mean opening a document, saying Print, selecting Fax - HP Officejet Pro 8500 A910, filling in the fax information page, selecting my cover page options, and pressing the send fax.  All just like I used to do before I upgraded to Win 8.  When I hit send fax, that is when I get the popup that the fax is spooling, then it goes to cancelled.  No error codes are displayed, no clues as to why, no nothing.  If I print the document and put it in the printer document feeder, I can fax it using the printer display screen no problem.
    Very bizarre.
    This question was solved.

Alright, I spoke with some of the engineers and they suggested the next few steps. First, here is a thread on an MS forum about removing a driver in an alternate fashion.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc730875.aspx
Another thing to note is that in Win8 you can easily access the Command Prompt by hitting the windows key and typing “command prompt.”
Additionally, I will PM you some further steps on removing the vestiges of the software from the back-end of your PC. You will HAVE to be sure to follow those instructions to the letter.
Do these two things and let me know what happens after you install the printer again from the direct download link I have already provided above.
Let me know and have a great day!

  • Horrible Noise from PB17 with external units drawing power from FW.

With external boxes that draw power from the firewire bus (Audio interfaces/SSL Duende etc.),
my powerbook makes a terrible sort of digital whine.
(actually it sounds a bit like cassette based program loading on old 8-bit computers (e.g. ZX Spectrum)).
The noise is coming from under the rear left of the keyboard.
I'm convinced it's something to do with power draw as it only happens with boxes that take their power from FW.
Sorry if this is a repeat question. I did a really long search, but only got a couple of allusions to this.
Thanks again in advance for any help.

  • Firefox asks to download like.php from sites with Facebook social button

So, I don't know if this is a problem with one site or Facebook in general, but everytime I access this site, a download window for "like.php" appears four times in a row. I've seen the same problems in this forums when I searched for it, but none of them provided a final answer. By the way, I formated my PC some weeks ago and the problem happened before it, so it can't be cache, history or something like that.
This may be about "Do Not Track" and/or other privacy extensions that I use. If it's not possible a solution now, could anyone explain why this happens? Is it because of the site, Facebook, Firefox, settings or extensions?

That should be an issue on the server.
Firefox should not ask you to download a PHP file. Instead it should ask you to download a HTML equivalent.
Try this: get the PHP file and open it. If you don't find < ?php in the file it means it's an issue on Firefox and you may want to clear your cookies.
Many site issues can be caused by corrupt cookies or cache. In order to try to fix these problems, the first step is to clear both cookies and the cache.
Note: ''This will temporarily log you out of all sites you're logged in to.''
To clear cache and cookies do the following:
#Go to Firefox > History > Clear recent history or (if no Firefox button is shown) go to Tools > Clear recent history.
#Under "Time range to clear", select "Everything".
#Now, click the arrow next to Details to toggle the Details list active.
#From the details list, check ''Cache'' and ''Cookies'' and uncheck everything else.
#Now click the ''Clear now'' button.
Further information can be found in the [[Clear your cache, history and other personal information in Firefox]] article.
If this doesn't work, maybe you'd need to reset Firefox.
The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information.
Note: ''This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.''
To Reset Firefox do the following:
#Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
    #Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
#Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
#Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.
Further information can be found in the [[Reset Firefox – easily fix most problems]] article.
If this doesn't work too or you found < ?php then the issue may be on the server, which doesn't process CGI commands for the mimetype. That's an issue on Facebook and should be fixed soon.
Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!

  • Boot up and wake from sleep noise from superdrive normal???

whenever booting up or waking from sleep, the superdrive seems to make a loud, not grinding, but close to grinding noise.
this noise is on other mbp's that i tested at the apple store, but it's really annoying, like your drive is about to die.
this happens every time on boot up and wake from sleep. do others find this acceptable or normal?
everything else is great. i do have the cpu idle whine, but it's intermittent and running the mirror widget definitely resolves the issue until the next restart.

that's really unfortunate. coming from pc side of computing, i don't recall such an awful sound when booting up laptops tha t had similar drives.
as for previous apple notebooks, i could only comment on the ibook g3 model which had a more pleasing mechanical sound...kind of like whirring(although not a superdrive).
also, a car cd player mechanism is much smoother and much more quiet. apple should pay more attention to this area like bmw does.
the only solution is to keep a cd or dvd loaded in the drive, but peace and quiet comes at the expense of battery longevity.

  • USB ports don't work after resuming from standby with Windows 8 on X230 tablet

I have just done a clean install of Windows 8 on my X230 tablet.  Before installing Windows 8 I installed the most recent BIOS for this machine (version 2.50).  After installing Windows 8 I installed System Update from the Lenovo Website and downloaded all the recommended drivers and other files.  I've also installed all the latest Windows 8 updates.
Here are the symptoms of my problem: After resuming from standby/sleep mode, my USB ports do not work.  My computer has two USB 3.0 ports and one USB 2.0 ports.  All exhibit the same behavior.  After resuming from standby mode I have tried inserting both my mouse and a USB thumbdrive, but neither are recognized.  After restarting Windows, the USB ports work again... until I resume from standby mode again.
I hope there is a solution to this issue.  It is very frustrating.

Thanks for the suggestion about tweaking the "Allow this computer to turn off this device" feature.  I un-checked that box for every entry I could find under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" in the Devide Manager.  Unfortunately, the same symptoms of my problem persisted.
I went back and looked at the README file associated with the BIOS 2.50 download on Lenvo's support site.  At the bottom of the file it gives a "Summary of Changes".  Under version 2.03 of the BIOS (the version just before version 2.50), it says:
    - (Fix) Fixed an issue where USB device might not detected when system resume from sleep mode.
This indicates that Lenovo support was already aware of such issues.  The problem was intended to be fixed in version 2.03 of the BIOS.  However, the issue persists on my machine, even with the latest BIOS.
Hopefully someone from Lenovo can comment here.

  • Shared file from computer with Windows 7 slow to open and save on computer with Windows 8.1

I have three computers in homegroup. They can see each other and sharing files is not a problem. Main computer, where I have all my data on uses Windows 7 Home premium, and Office 2007. Both other computers use latest version Windows 8.1, Office 2010. I
use these two computers to access files on main computer (word, excel). I have problems, because when I try to open word and excel files on these two other computers, files open very slow (green bar is showing, although word has no text inside), and also saves
very slow - empty word file takes 1 minute for saving.
One of computers with 8.1 had 8 before updating and I managed to solve this problem with running this protocol (smb.bat) - this solved the problem, although I do not really understand why:
    sc config lanmanworkstation depend= bowser/mrxsmb10/nsi
    sc config mrxsmb20 start= disabled
So it seems it is really something to do with the version of windows since the same computer had windows 8 and this protocol and worked well, but when updated to 8.1 it works slowly (I tried this protocol, but it is not working)
Please see if there is any solution (updated protocol?) because I really cannot wait for word file to open 1 minute.
    Thank you for help!

    Hi,
First, You can leave the homegroup and join again to see the result.
    To leave a homegroup:
1.Open HomeGroup by typing homegroup in the search box, and then clicking HomeGroup.
    2.Click Leave the homegroup.
3.Click Leave the homegroup, and then click Finish.
You can also join the homegroup in the way accordingly.
Besides, this happens after a upgrade to Windows 8.1, this also might be caused by service conflict, I suggest to perform a clean boot to solve this:
1.Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Search. Or, if you are using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, and then click Search.
2.Type msconfig in the search box, and then tap or click msconfig.
3.On the Services tab of the System Configuration dialog box, tap or click to select the Hide all Microsoft services check box, and then tap or click Disable all.
4.On the Startup tab of the System Configuration dialog box, tap or click Open Task Manager.
5.On the Startup tab in Task Manager, for each startup item, select the item and then click Disable.

I am using windows vista and i was wondering if this was a normal thing or if there was anything that i could do about it. Thank you in advance for anything that you can do to help me.

Yes, there are big problems with iTunes for Windows. Until these are rectified, your Ipod will be a paper weight.
