Siri only works in "raise to speak"

Just in the last couple days, Siri stopped working when I pressed the home button. She pops up, but there is no voice recognition. I know my speaker works because Siri works when I "raise to speak".  My speakerphone also works when I call someone. I have an iphone 5 with the latest (7.0.4) update. I also have tried turning it on and off while disabling Siri and Reseting. I'm guessing this is a software issue because my hardware obviously works in other ways. Help?

I am having this same problem.  The problem appears to be related to the microphone and must be a softwear issue.  The microphone works with other apps, and works when making and receiving calls.  It also works when I "raise to speak" to Siri, but it does not pick up any sound when I attempt to talk to Siri by holding the home button, or when pressing the microphone button on screen when in the Siri interface.  Is it possible that holding the home button to talk to Siri is somehow not activating the microphone?
I should also note that I have tried turning the phone off and back on.  I have tried the reset by holding the home button and the sleep/wake button, and I have even restored the phone in iTunes, although I did not set it up as a new iPhone, because I am not interested in losing app data, call history, messeges, etc.

Siri only works when I raise to speak, but when I hole down the hold button and Siri pops up, it doesn't pick up any sound. How do I fix this?

    Try A and B
    (A) Restart iPad
    1. Hold down the Sleep/Wake button until the red slider appears.
    2. Drag the slider to turn off iPad.
    3. Turn iPad back on, hold down the Sleep/Wake until the Apple logo appears
    (B) Reset iPad
Hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears
Note: Data will not be affected.

  • Does Siri only work when connected to WiFi

Does Siri only work when you are connected to a Wifi?  Mine does not seem to work through the 4G cell network.

It works over WiFi or cellular.
If you are using 4G cell network, are you using something like a Verizon MiFi 4510L to create a hotspot that your iPhone 4S is using?
There are other issues with Siri that are going on - perhaps that is what you are seeing?

  • Siri only works when I use the "raise to speak"-feature

Siri works as in the icon shows up when I press the home button and it starts "listening". But the microphone does not show any movement. So Siri "doesn't hear me". Funny though: When I just pick up the phone and talk, she understands me perfectly.
    - Siri via home button does NOT pick up my voice
    - Siri with "raise to speak" enabled works
    - Microphone works
    - no network problems (my iPad-Siri works fine)
    Kinda annoying. Things I've tried:
    - reboot
    - turn off/on
    - diable bluetooth
    Hardware:
    - iPhone 5, 64 GB, white (as if it matters *g*).
I am kind of clueless. Any help? Anyone? Thanks a lot.

Replying to myself. Believe it or not. After I finished this post, I tried just one more time. Guess what? It works. No changes. Siri got scared of the community, I guess. Very weird.

  • Safari is not working and siri only works with the phone not internet related questions.

I have an Iphone 5 and for about 8 months it worked find, then somewhere along the line I think about the time I upgraded to the latest OS, Safari stopped working.  That is when I hit a link from email or open safari I get the browser window but nothing works, like its been blocked.  Siri of course only works with internal serches, through contacts and such.  My other browsers (crome, oprea and mercury) work fine.  I have been through all the internal settigns I can find, but nothing has worked.  Have cleared history cookes with no suceess.  Any ideas?

    Hello Mike,
Thank you for providing so much detail about the issue you are experiencing with Safari after upgrading to iOS 7.
The first thing I recommend is quitting and relaunching the applications on your iPhone:
    Double-click the Home button.
Swipe left or right until you have located the app you wish to close.
Swipe the app up to close it.
You can find the full article here:
iOS: Force an app to close
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5137
If you are still seeing the same issue after quitting and relaunching the apps that are open, I recommend restarting your phone and then resetting if it's still not working:
    Restarting your device
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red "slide to power off" slider appears, and then slide the slider.
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
Note: Reset your device only if you are unable to restart it.
    Resetting your device
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
You can find the full article here:

If the issue persists, the last thing I recommend is backing up and restoring your iPhone:

  • Intel iMac sound only works out of one speaker, but both headphones...

    Hello.
I've run into a very interesting problem with the sound of my 20" Intel iMac's sound. Ever since I moved into my new appartment, my Logitech computer speakers have only worked out of the left speaker. The strange bit is that if I plug any pair of headphones into the same jack I get perfect sterio sound. I've check my sound preferences to make sure the sound is balanced, checked multiple pairs of headphones (that are all known to work perfectly), multiple pairs of computer speakers (that are all known to work perfectly), I even plugged in my M-Audio fast track USB audio interface with the same results (left channel only with speakers, sterio with headphones) Another weird thing is that I tested both pairs of computer speakers with my roommate's 20" Intel iMac (same model) and both worked just fine.
I feel like I've run the gambit of things I could do to eliminate a faulty component. Do you think I have a faulty jack? something wrong with my software/hardware? I'm completely stumpped...anyone have any ideas?

You've done a lot of testing such that it sounds like the jack and plug combination of the Logitechs and the iMac are just a hair short now, and the move is the only thing that changed. Can you compare the headphone plug and the Logitech plug side by side for length? Is one of them a straight plug and the other a 90 degree such that it can't get all the way in now? I'm sure you've tried pushing it in extra hard or wiggling a bit. One guy on here awhile back sent pix of his headphone port and the one right beside it on the back of his iMac, and the headphone one was recessed slightly deeper into the iMac's body.

  • Siri ONLY working on 3G

Hi, I'm having some trouble with Siri: She works perfectly over 3G, but when I try to use her over Wi-Fi she says that there is a conection problem and so...What can I do?

I'm guessing there might be firewall and port restrictions on the wi-fi network you're connecting too.  There is not much you can do other than work with the administrator of the network to open up the right ports, etc.

  • Siri only works on Bluetooth to our Honda Handsfree link.

Siri is not working in normal phone mode.   She will blink....we then speak and nothing happens.
BUT...I can walk out to the car...and she works PERFECT.
    I have tried
    A.  Enable / Disable Siri
    B.  Disable Siri, Turn Off phone, Wait 5 mins, Turn On Phone, Enable Siri
    C.  COnfirmed our Speck case is not covering the 3 microphones
    Open to ANY suggestions....

  • HT204389 Siri only works about 25% of the time after iOS7 upgrade on my iPhone 5. Is it really still "the servers"?

"I am really sorry, I am not avail right now..."
I understood this error after launch due to the servers being down, but I continue to have this issue when attempting to use Siri the majority of the time. Starting to get worried!

I've been getting this problem with iOS7, but not as badly as you mention.  75% of the time Siri is OK, but it's definitely slower than with iOS6.  Usually, when there is a problem, I just immediately repeat my request and it works.
Although the delays are small - it may take 5 to 10 seconds to get Siri to respond - the great benefit of Siri is that it's quicker to do things with Siri than by other means: if it becomes slow, then a lot of the value of Siri disappears.
I hope these are just teething performance issues that Apple can fix in the next release.

  • The raise to speak feature on Siri does not work

The raise to speak feature on Siri does not work anymore is there any possible fixes for this

I had the same problem (iPhone 5), but the fix was simple.
Turn off your Bluetooth.  Yeah, I know this sounds crazy.  Here's why.
When you use Siri with the "Raise to Speak" feature activated (Settings/General/Siri), this enables the proximity sensor that lets the iPhone know it is near your ear, activates Siri, and turns off the display.
However, if you are using a bluetooth headset (like I do), then this sensor is turned off automatically, because you will be speaking thru your bluetooth and not the iPhone to activate Siri and make calls.
To prove this, do the following test.
Make sure "Siri" is on, and "Raise to Speak" is on (Settings/General/Siri).
    Turn off your Bluetooth (Settings/Bluetooth).
(TEST) Hold your phone in front of you, and with a natural motion, bring the phone to your ear (as if you are answering a call).  Siri will automatically activate, assuming you want to ask it/her a question (very cool feature). And the screen will turn offautomatically.
If you have never used the "Raise to Speak" feature, this feature automatically activates Siri when you raise the phone to your ear (really a cool and helpful feature). It may take a little practice to get used to this.  I struggled at first, but soon got the hang of using a natural motion to bring the phone to my ear.  Starting with the phone in front of you, the phone should be "almost" parallel to the ground when it gets to your ear.  It may take several practice tries to get it, but you will get it, and you will be hooked on this neat little feature.
Ok, with this done, this proves your proximity sensor is funtioning properly.
Now, turn on your Bluetooth (Settings/Bluetooth).
And repeat the same (TEST) above.
This time, Siri should not activate, and the screen should not go off.  Why? This is because your voice communications with callers (and Siri), are now going thru your Bluetooth, and not the phone handset.  Because of this, their is no need for the proximity sensor, so it is automatically turned off (when Bluetooth is on).
I can only speak for me and my situation, and what worked for me.  However, their may be other issues regarding the proximity sensor separate of this that I am not aware of.
    I hope this helps you.
Man I love the "Raise to Speak" feature, you will too.
    God Bless You All.

  • Siri on Iphone 5 only works with headphones

I have an iPhone 5 64 gig gsm, factory unlocked phone.  Siri only works with headphones or when you use raise to speak.  When I attempt to use it without it doesn't seem to hear me.  I read a few threads on the subject and it seems this is a known issue.  Most of the time the threads end when someone finds a solution without the solution being disclosed.  Apps like Soundhound and Shazam seem to work fine so it appears the issue is software related.  I have notice Apple texting does not work with the mic either.  This is a very strange problem and I would appreciate any help you can give me as my iPhone is no longer in warranty.

    Hey W. Harrison Stone,
Thanks for the question. It sounds like you may have a hardware issue with one of your microphones on the iPhone (three in total). To help isolate the issue to software or hardware, it may be best to back up and restore your iPhone to factory settings. However, before doing so let's first try a simple restart/reset of your device:
Turn your iOS device off and on (restart) and reset
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1430
If the issue persists after a restart/reset, follow the instructions in this resource to backup and restore your iPhone:
iOS: How to back up your data and set up your device as a new device
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4137
After erasing and setting up as a new device, your device is now in a factory configuration. Test to determine if erasing and setting up as a new device resolved the issue. Content on the device may have caused unexpected behavior.
If the issue is still present, you may want to contact Apple Support.
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

  • Siri not working in the UK

I've been using Siri and it works well for most questions, but if I ask it for something about a local business, for example, where is the nearest pizza restaurant, it always replies that Siri is not able to give information for businesses outside the US and also something about using only the UK voice.
It works very well for other sorts of questions.
Is anyone else in the UK having this problem?
    Is there a solution?

To expand a bit on the previous reply, Siri only works for finding local business in the U.S. It does work for many things in the U.K., but not that.

  • HT204389 Why does talk text only work sometimes?????  At times it works fine and then it will either show me the blue circles forever or just stop without converting anything I said.

Why does talking to Siri only work periodically????  Sometimes it does fine and other times it just keeps running and nothing happens!     When I am tring to talk to text in messeges it does the same thing.  Sometimes fine,  other times the blue circles forever and then...nothing !  Does this happen to others???  Does anyone have a solution to this???

The trascription doesn't take place on your phone. The audio file is processed a little on the phone and then sent to Apple's servers for the bulk of the work, and the resulting text is sent back to your phone.
Sometimes there might be problems connecting to the internet to send the file. Sometimes there might be problems with Apple's servers in a specific region. In my case if I go outside my house a bit my phone will still be trying to connect to the wifi (there is just a little bit of a signal). There isn't enough wifi to handle sending the audio files to Apple, but enough that the phone keeps trying to use it.
Things that sometimes help. Turn off wifi if it is weak. Put your phone into airplane mode for a few seconds and then turn the radio back on.
If the problem is at Apple's end. Just wait a while.
