SIS 648 Max RAM speed

How can i set RAM speed? Plz give me step by step exp
I have 512 DDR 400 ram, will it work? I didnt find any 512 ram in tested hardware on this board.
Tom

Hi Tommen,
I can not give no a step by step guide, for that I know to little. Under the "Frequency/Voltage Control" you can set the CPU/DRAM ratio. When you change the ratio you can see the DRAM freq. just below. For DDR400 it should say 200MHz.
In the "Advanced chipset.." you can set CAS latency, timing and command rate. These settings are depending on what kind of RAM you have, and would also effect the RAM speed.
But if you have read this forum a bit you probably have seen that a lot of us using DDR400 in this MB have had problems.
In addition MSI has the program "Fuzzy Logic" but few of us (if any) has been able to use it with success for this MB.
I'm intresting to here how your DDR 400 is working?
My 512 DDR400 was working perfectly except from when rebooting I had to turn off og on the PS. To get it working as it should I had to set it as DDR333 (shown as 167MHz in bios), and set timing to Normal.
Everyone else....please feel free to correct me..

    Hi Everybody!
Everything seem to be find with my PC, but everytime I play a game, I'm sent back to the desktop eventuelly. I have a fresh Install PC with XP SP1, latest driver from ATI (Catalyst version 3.0) directx 9 install, BY the way my mobo is a SIS 648 MAX from MSI with the lastest AGP and IDE Drivers installed (for this motherboard of course) and I have the latest version of the bios. here the description of my Machine.
    Intel 2.4 P4 533 northwood

    Ati 9700 pro AGP 8X
    SB Audigy
    120 Gig HD Seagate
    With Windows XP SP1 Installed
Any suggestion!??? all my game do this

Try stepping down (underclocking) your RAM tp run @ 266..   There is a huge issue that hasnt been addressed by MSI or ATI at this point.  Its a latency issue.
It could be solved by ATI with a new driver that decreases the AGP latency or MSI could update a BIOS that could be flashed that allowed to reduce AGP slot latency manually.
Let me know if it helps you!

  • SIS 648 max w/ATI AIW 9800 pro issue

Hey all...    I am trying to install a new Ati AIW 9800 pro in to my PC.  The Motherboard is a MSI 648 Max-L.......    Every time I install the old or new Driver set for the Ati card it kills my network connection I cannot connect to the internet or other PC in my network...  I cant even ping my router.   I have to restore my PC back to the time before the install and all is fine even with the card still in the PC with no drivers loaded.       Hers the kicker I can install just the ati display drivers an all is fine but as soon as I install the Multimedia drivers I lose all network connection and have to do a restore to get it back.  Even if I delete the drivers and reboot the PC my network connection is gone, have to do a restore to get it back.
    Any ideas on this issue????

  • SiS 648 MAX problem!

    Hello!
I have a very annoying problem with my MSI 648 MAX board.
The computer freezes and reboots when i put in another DIMM in it.
I have two identical TwinMos 256mb PC3200 DDR modules.
They both work fine when they arent used together.
When i put in the other one, the sympthoms i described above happen.
I have formatted c: and tryed with both WinXP and Win2000.
I'm using the latest SiS AGP & IDE drivers.
Nothing in the system is overclocked.
I have upgraded with the latest bios.
    Other system speccs:
    P4 2.0 (400mhz).
    ASUS GF4 Ti4200.
    80gb Seagate.
    350W "Noname" Powersupply.
Is this a known problem and will I just have to face the fact that this won't work? :(

    It's a JNC Power Supply 350W.
    The amps are:
    +3.3V = 24A
    +5V = 35A
    +12V = 12A
    -12V = 0.8A
    -5V = 0.5A
It has worked fine with this board before and with another board (Abit th7 II raid).
The problem itself is getting worse, windows freezes with just 1 memory-stick now :(
Formatted once again and tried WinXP and Win2k without any success..
The Memory / GFX works fine in another computer.

  • Help for SIS 648 MAX-L Startup Problem

I just bought an MSI-648MAX-L, a 2.4GHz cpu and a Jaton GeForce4 TI4200 card. Installed all of the above + PC2700 512 MB RAM and a WD 80GB hard drive, floppy and CD. Turn on the power and my screen flickers all four of the diagnostic leds light up green and then nothing. I hear the hard drive spinning and the CPU fan and video card fan but nothing else. Tried one other AGP video card and a PCI video card but nothing on the screen. Seems like the BIOS is not loading. So I turn the computer off and set the BIOS reset jumper. Turn it back on again and still nothing. Checked all the connections, the seating of the CPU and tried again, still nothing. Any idea what might be wrong?? I hope I don't have to buy another MotherBoard and also I hate the idea of removing my CPU once installed. ;(
    Thanks for your help..
    Kumar.

What kind of video card is it?
If it's a radeon 9700 pro, look in one of the other threads  on this site to figure out what revision you have, rev 1.1 or 1.2 9700 pros will not work on some 648 max boards ( well for me it was 648 max L im not sure about the 648 max but im assuming it has the same problem.
What happens with radeon is since the mobo sets the agp automatically, and there is the 8x bug the system doesnt boot. But the card will work fine on machines that have 4x, In this case RMA the card to radeon and make sure to specifiy that you get a 1.3 rev.
Otherwise you stated you have tried other processors and memory that were "known" to be good.
DDR 400 or DDR 333 memory?

  • SIS 648 MAX Sound

I have a 648 MAX motherboard with onboard sound.  I also have an S-Bracket fitted and use this to connect to a TEAC PowerMax 950 Digital 5.1 sound system using digital coax.
I am using the latest version of the AC97 sound driver under windows XP Pro. (5.10.0.5320)
When pressing the test button on the sound system, all 6 speakers are heard and work OK.  When I use the AC97 Sound Effect Manager from within control panel, this fails to test anything other than the front left and front right speakers.
    Any ideas please?

Do you have any real problems when it comes to gaming, watching DVDs/VCDs or listening to MP3s and CDs?
If you are not encountering problems with the daily usage, then you can don't bother about the 2nd party software for the testings.
I personnally don't use any programs to tests my Altec XA3051 5.1 DDS speakers as long as they work normally with all the correct programs and apps.
You can also try updating your WinXP to SP1.

  • SiS 648 Max and Memory, still having pb

OK, I still can't use 3x512Mo of Corsair DDR 400 Mhz! I've tried all kind of settings in the bios, all kind os speed of ratio, it's always the same, it works perfectly with only one memory chip !
So my question is: what memory should I use to be sure that 2 or 3 chips will be OK ?
What if I use 3 x 512 Mo of  SEC K4H560838C-TCB3  PC2700 DDR Ram ? They say it has been tested ... am I guarantee that will work normally ??
Did some of you have 1 Go or 1.5 Go of DDR something with this mother board, without any problem for configuration ??
    Please, tell me !!
    Thanks

By the way, I didn't try to change the settings in the bios (speed, voltage, ...) because I'm not really familiar with that, and because I assumed that if it works fine with one, it should work fine with 2 or 3 ...
What kind of bios setting would you guys suggest  ??
I've found that with this board, if you change the memory you may have to change the BIOS settings. Try setting the Timings to Normal. After that, try manually setting the CAS# Latency.  Try it at 2 and 2.5. At each CAS# setting, also try changing the MA Select setting. The easiest way is to get memtest86 and run it after changing each setting. If you change a setting and it won't post, reset the cmos. If you get it working, then try setting the timings faster.
Edited:BTW I guess I should ask. On your first post, when you say it wont boot. Can you still get into the BIOS?

  • [SIS Series] SIS 648 Max-L MS-6585 mobo probs. please help.

I have been having tons of issues with this mobo.  First off when playing a simple game such as starcraft, it will either restart randomly, or perform an illegal operation.  It has massive probs playing any games more complex than that, which is sad.  I also had alot of problems with installation of win xp pro.  some files failed to copy. Install finally worked but after many tries. some help would be great. thanks.
it had a 2.0ghz 400mhz fsb intel celeron processor but was changed out with a 2.26ghz p4 proc
so heres the specs on this computer
    power supply
    tigerpro 350 watts
    vid card
    Abit siluro gf4mx-se
    hard drive
    80gb western digital wd800
    Hitachi 8x dvd rom drive
    generic firewire card
    s-braket installed
    d-braket installed
    2.26ghz 533fsb 512k l2 pentium 4 proc w/ stock heatsink+fan
    memory
spectek select 512mb which worked in 2 other systems flawlessly
    OS
presently a dual boot system with win xp pro and suse linux
oringinally had just winxp pro and had same issues as stated before

see i dont kno.  its a 350w psu, and it seems almost as if the ram bank is bad, ie the slot where the ddr mem goes.  i change it to a diff bank and it works.  starts up fine. but the next restart, will not run.  see this is what happens.
1 turn on the computer. it will just sit there with no cmos/post beep and no bios for the mobo or vid card appears on screen.  hdd and dvd rom get power as well as the fans
2 the d-bracket 4 leds read all green, signifying that the cpu or heatsink is bad or not installed properly.
sometimes ill release the tension on the heatsink and move it around(the heatsink) then turn it on with the tension loose, and seems to do better like that. plus it will boot. also, another time and pretty much every time since my first post, it seems to start up all the devices, but no boot.  I initially thought it was the cpu so i changed that out with another that was known good. then it worked marvelously, but after another restart, refused to start at all.  Then after reading the other moderators post i realized it could be the ram.  I had the same issue with this board before, before it was RMAed mind you, where it wouldnt work, so i moved the ram to a diff slot and it worked.  same case with this new mobo.  it started up fine.  then same prob arose, but this time, no matter what would not start until i put the new kingston ram in. then i ran that memtest prog.  finished, got to 100%, and kept counting, but couldnt stop it or reboot from the menu, so i hit the reset button, prolly not the best idea, but i didnt have a choice.  im not quite sure if the ram passed or not, but immediatly after gave me tons of probs.  boots runs Suse linux, but wont run windows.  As soon as it loads it instantly restarts.  this happend even in safe mode.  this mobo was originally in the computer i have now, and i think its the same wattage and amperage as the one in the msi mobo case.  the reason y i dont see it being the psu is bc im currently runnin a 3.0ghz p4 1 sata 2 eide ok vid card a dvdburner and a cdrw.  alot more than this system, but never gave me any probs. but who knows i could be wrong.  I appologize for the long post.  but i am totally stumped on this one.  but it just seems to me like this mobo series (648max-l) is just way buggy.  i have had issues with this mobo from day one. as well as the one(exact model) before it.  If i have to put anymore money into this mobo, it jsut isnt worth it to me anymore.  i will prolly just  buy a diff mobo all together.  as always any help or suggestions are very much appreciated.  once again i appologize for the lengthyness, but i hope this will aid you in your diagnostic.  thanks again!

  • Sis 648 max (ms 6585) display problem

whenever im rebooting or reseting, my display does not return. i cannot see the post or anything and i dont think it boots up into windows. i have shut the computer off completely wait for 6 secs and then turn it on. its a hassle when i restart. i flashed the bios 1.1 to 1.4. im using  a 9700 Pro on it i heard theres an issue with the card. any solutions? i used live update to flash and the manual bios flash file  is confusing, says its missing a file when i try to flash.  please help!

o yea of course ive tried that... but its actually just not loading. a more detailed descript, its not only during restart. if the computer is coming on from a  cold boot and this is the first time its booting up this happens. i must kill the power supply, wait 10 secs then try it. if i shut it off or restart it does not do post or do anything making me turn off the psu and waiting and starting again.
and another problem, my HD light is not working. the store i bought it from said it was fine but i dont see it... im a little lazy to go even though its a 5 min walk... any suggestions?

  • MSI 648 Max with AGP X8 - BIOS update

I have replaced my old AGP card with Radeon 9550 256MB for use with my new Dell 20" WS monitor.
Every time, after starting or during 3DMark03, it crashed back to desktop and sometimes retarting my pc.  I try ram settings, aperature etc with no luck.  My pc has TrueBlue 480 watt PSU and the voltage reading is good.
In the end, I searched this forum and found out it was the problem with AGP X8 so I changed it to AGP X4 via ATI control panel, my pc went through 3Dmark03 with no problems at all.  AGP X4 works flawless.
Regarding BIOS - my motherboard is SIS 648 MAX-L HT ready (Hyper-threading) and its latest BIOS version is v3.1.  I'm just wondering that is my board exactly the same as non-HT 648 MAX board physically?  Since they use same chipset with same layout and also because I noticed the BIOS update for non-HT version is different with v1.5 and has the fix for Radeon 9700 problem which could be related to my problem.  Since I'm using Pentium 4 2.53Ghz, Hyper-threading is a useless feature, could I flash my board with this BIOS?
    Thanks in advance

I am running an A88XM with an A8-7600.  I purchased 4gb x2  2400Mhz DDR3.  When I enable XMP I get the message above, "CPU Max DDR Speed 2133Mhz"  I read that the A8-7600 supported 2400mhz with AMP, so I purchased some AMD 2400mhz ram with AMD and I get the same message.  It doesn't not allow me to manually select 2400 either.  I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas or am I just missing something.
    Thanks!

  • Fastest Compatable DDR RAM For 648 MAX?

I've been reading about all these problems people have been having concerning RAM/motherboard combinations, and have concluded that my RAM is what is causing my problems (XP/2000 installation difficulties, unrecognizable Gainward GF4 Ti4200 card, boot up problems).  Right now, I have one Kingston Hyper X 512MB DDR434 RAM (which is going out the door soon) installed on my 648 MAX.
I originally thought the video card problem was BIOS related because the only thing recommended by XP was to update the BIOS (said motherboard does not support your video card's features; try updating your BIOS).  I tried that through LiveUpdate, and it messed up somehow during the flash, so I tried to restore the original BIOS, but the system was very unstable after that.  I'm about to send my motherboard back for an exchange.  I just found out by reading some posts here that other people have been having the same problem with a similar RAM/video card setup.
Also, I'm having extreme difficulty installing Win2000.  It installed the first time on a test HDD, but on my new one (WD 80GB 7200RPM ATA100), it wouldn't go in at all.  ;( It went up to the final file copying part (after entering the serial number), and crashed.  It kept doing that, so I gave up and moved on to XP.  XP went in fine the first time, but it wouldn't reinstall after that, even with a reformatted drive.  Other people are having similar problems, and said that once they swapped out their RAM, their problems were gone.
I'm just looking for the fastest compatible 512MB DDR RAM available for the 648.  Thanks.

Heh, funny thing, I was messing around with some BIOS settings, and somehow got my computer to work this afternoon! 8o Reinstalled everything, and was having a good ol time!  :D
Then, and even funnier thing happened.  I went out this evening, and when I came back, the computer wouldn't work anymore!  X(  This thing is driving me nuts.  I'm definitely gonna pick up either the Corsair or Winbond memory ASAP.  Thanks for the replys everyone!
BTW, I've had the hard drive by itself with the jumperless setting from the beginning.  Also, it always wants to be the primary drive, even when it's set to slave and attached at the slave connector on the IDE cable. ?(  I know that isn't a problem right now cause I just have it by itself on the cable.

  • RAM Settings for 648 Max

  • SiS AGP drivers with 648 MAX-F and TI-4600 GS

A few days ago I bought a new computer. Here are the specs:
    Compucas 6A21B 300W SuperLowNoise
    Intel Pentium 4 Northwood 2,4GHz
    MSI 648 MAX-F
    Kingston 512Mb 333Mhz DDR
    Seagate Barracuda ATA V 80Gt 7200rpm
    Gainward Geforce4 Ti4600 ultra/750 XP golden sample
    windows 2000
I have tried everything to get the SiS AGP drivers work. Every time I start with them I get a white screen with colourful horizontal lines. There is also gray at the bottom of my screen. This picture comes after the windows screen, when it should say preparing network connections and everything. I have service pack 3 and DirectX 9. I have tried many different versions of the drivers from both MSI and Gainward/NVidia. I even upgraded my BIOS. From bios I have tried all the DRAM timing things. Now I have a nice set of drivers on my computer. Is there anything else to do than wait for new drivers? It works fine after I uninstall the AGP drivers. Does the operating system matter?

Did you try the newest drivers from Nvidia's website?
Did you try video card in another system when you had it in the shop, and another video card in your system? I take it you did a clean install of Windows XP. Mine has had no problems in WindowsXP, It's a Chaintech Ti4600. While I do have Windows 2000, I haven't used it on this system so I'm no help there. Also did you try setting BIOS to default settings? Come to think of it, I think it defaults to graphics card in PCI slot, maybe I'm thinking of another board. Don't know if that would make a difference anyway. Can you go into safemode and update or remove the agp drivers and start over? Is this fun or what? Did the AGP drivers you installed, create a Sis agp utility folder in the start menu? That might give you some information about any possible problems. What are the agp voltage readings in the BIOS?
Oops! Checked my BIOS, there is no setting for graphics card in PCI slot. Way too many motherboards.  I'd try re-installing XP from scratch, install all sis drivers, install Nvidia drivers, install XP service pack. If that doesn't work, get mad, scream and run out the front door with arms flailing!
