Site Definition - local info, remote info confusion

Hi,
I am new to DW CS4, but doing well getting to know it.
In the Site Definition dialog, Advanced Tab:
Local Info:
Links relative to document is selected.
-- HTTP address -- I'm not quite sure which of the following to use:
http:/www.johnblaustein.com --  this is my site
http://johnblaustein.com/var/www/html/ -- this is the folder on the server that stores the site.
Remote Info -- set as follows -- which works fine to connect:
Access: FTP
FTP host: johnblaustein.com
Host directory: /var/www/html
QUESTION:  On the Local Info Tab, which of the above two addresses do I use?  I think I simpy use http:/www.johnblaustein.com, but I am not sure.  Also, do I need the "www"?
Thank you.
John

Yes, that's kind of what I thought, but I wasn't sure.  The /var folder is not visible on the web.
Thanks for the quick reply.
John

On 2 separate computers using 8.0.2 I have been having issues
with my site definitions loosing the login info on only a select
few sites. This is only occasional but is annoying when you have
    deadlines.
If I re-import the definition it works fine again.
I just recently spoke with someone else that has the same
issue and now I tried it on Vista and had the same issue again.
I also noticed there were some posts in here referring to IE
7 Beta as being the problem, but I have the regular version of IE 7
    and never installed the Beta.
Has there been a fix posted anywhere?

  • Need help : cannot anymore select local info in site definition only remote

    Hi
I made the mistake choosing in site deffintion for remote info and not local info
Now it seems impossible to reverse it cannot anymore select local info in site definition only remote
So now I can not make the site normally.
I've closed dreamweaver a couple times and tried it again and even my pc but it seems to be something irreparable?
Does anyone know a better idea than reinstall?
    thank you
    Paul

You are on the Basic Tab of the Site definition dialog in DW CS3.  Unfortunately, that's also the more confusing way to define a site.  Nevertheless, you'll note that there are 3 selections across the top of the dialog:
    1.  Editing Files
    2.  Testing Files
    3.  Sharing Files
Have you already filled out the first two?
A site definition in DW *could* only have the first of those three filled out - you really only need the local site defined until you are ready to upload your files (assuming you are only creating static pages - that is, pages without server scripting).
To define most remote sites, all you need to do is to select that you connect to your remote server using FTP, and then to state the folder within which your website files are stored on the remote server (often this is a folder called 'www' or 'wwwroot' or 'public_html').
In my mind, the better way to define a site is to go right to the Advanced tab - it's less confusing because you just fill in all of the fields without going through this 'wizard-type' interface....
So - does that help at all?

  • Remote and Testing Server Site Definitions

I am confused about what information I should put in my
remote site definition info and testing server FTC Host directory
text boxes. My host placed 3 directories: database, log, and www on
my server and Dreamweaver placed two directories, Connections and
_mmServerScripts in the same directory as the above 3. I have
placed all of my site files, including my home page and folders in
the www directory and my Access database in the database directory.
Dreamweaver placed the connection info in the Connections folder an
d _mmServerScripts in the same directory.
In order to construct my local site to match the remote site,
I created a www folder on my local site and placed all of my HTML
files and supporting folders in it.
From various Adobe Tech Notes I have read, I was led to
    believe my FTP host directory
Should be www/. However, when I do this and create a new web
page on my local site and upload it to my remote site, Dreamweaver
creates a new www directory inside of the one my host created on
the remote site and uploads the file to it instead of placing it in
the www directory my host created. Also, when I use F12 to test my
page in my browser I get a 404 page not found because Dreamweaver
placed a www in the page URL that shouldn’t be there and
after I remove it I’m able to see my page in my browser. My
URL prefix on my testing server site definition is:
    http://I.P.number.html.
What am I not doing right?
Should I use www/ as my FTP host directory or leave it blank?
Also, what should my URL prefix be?
    Thanks for your help.

What you need to do is set up so that in the remote server
    you point to the
www level on the server, and don't replicate this locally.

  • Dreamweaver help with site set up. Local and remote server

    Hi,
I've just got dreamweaver cs6 and i'm having issues with managing the site.
Up until now I was using dreamweaver cs3 and when setting up a new site, the site definition had the category Local info and Remote info separated.
Now on CS6 I cannot set up both individually for the same site, it doesn't give the option, it's one or the other which it doesnt work for me if I want to test a page locally, via preview on browser, otherwise it will upload it to the server if I choose FTP. If I choose only local then I lose all the ftp settings and once I've done the testing it won't upload to the server.
Surely it has to be a work around this or something Im doing wrong but I can't see what it is

There is no need to uncheck remote and testing. Previewing locally should work exactly the same as it did in CS3.
Are you using a server-side language? If so, expand the Files panel by clicking this icon:
Then make sure that the Testing Server icon is selected.

    Question:
Is the hosting changing? or just the domain name?
    If just the domain name-
At the domain name Registrar's control panel, set the new
    domain name up
with the DNS domain name server of your current hosting.
At your hosting- you'll need to add this new domain name to
    their DNS name
servers also. Either through a hosting control panel or
    through a
    trouble-ticked to their help desk.
There will be no need to make any change to the site
    definition in
dreamweaver, unless you change hosting to a different remote
    server.

  • How to enter/edit Remote Info Settings???

I have just opened Dreamweaver CS5 for the first time and, to my dismay, I cannot find the Remote Info settings window anywhere. When I select Manage Sites, the Local section is there, but Remote is nowhere to be found. Help!

    From this help document -
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/dreamweaver/cs/using/WSee8adad8a8c1990b-6cb1a36e1266d204f20-80 00.html
    Set options for FTP connections
Use this setting if you connect to your web server using FTP.
    Select Site > Manage Sites.
Click New to set up a new site, or select an existing Dreamweaver site and click Edit.
In the Site Setup dialog box, select the Servers category and do one of the following:
Click the Add New Server button to add a new server
Select an existing server and click the Edit Existing Server button

  • How can I change remote site definition without breaking all of the links?

I've created a website and put it here http://home.comcast.net/~alpsf/index.html to test it during construction.  Now when I change the remote site definition on the local site in DW, all of the links are broken.  I now suspect the problem is that I made it site root-relative, and DW inserted /~alpsf/ in all of the links.  Is there a way to fix this?
    Thanks very much.

You can do a find and replace to change the links globally. Make sure you do a complete backup of the site prior to doing this incase you don't do it correctly. Let me stress that again, backup your entire site incase you need to restore. If you have created a "new site" and this will not be part of the /~alpsf site, then you will need to define a new site and copy all the files into that folder (I am guessing this is the case). I would copy the files outside of Dreamweaver. You could do this without touching the files in the ~alpsf directory. There are a lot of variable here as I don't know exactly what you are doing.
On the file menu select window/results-select search. (this is done if the search window is not open).
Find in: Entire Current Local Site
    Search: Source Code
    Find: "/~alpsf/
    Replace:"/
That should do it, but this is a very tricky thing. I wouldn't have a problem doing this as long as I have everything backed up.
    Jim
Edited:You might have to go into your css, spry files and any others that has links to do the same (this time only select Find in: Current document once the document is open). Once that is done, delete the whole remote site and upload the changes once you check that everything is completed.

  • Error clears remote info

Dreamweaver sometimes says something to the tune of "index
not found in site" and then clears my remote info. Wtf?

They should look in their own tech articles. I had the same problem and this solved it:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93061
With one caveat. The article talks about creating a shared folder in the Users folder, but I could not create it there even with Admin permissions. However, I could create it somewhere else and paste it into the users folder, the change the permissions.
Makes no sense, but seems to solve the problem!

  • When you expand to show local and remote sites, in DW CS6 how do I get the local to be on the left?

When you expand to show local and remote sites, in the previous verions of DW, the files type (local or remote) selected when not seeing both, automatically came up on the left.  I liked local when I am editing and when I am ready to upload I expand to see both local in remote.  Before, the one you had selected, in my case local, was always displayed on the left.  Now in CS6 when I have local selected before I expand, the local is on the right and remote on the left. For me that is not correct.  I find that having local on the left works best for me like reading, left to right, I want the local on the LEFT so I can put the updated from left to the remote on the right.
-->In DW CS6 how do I get the local to be on the left?

Thank you so much!  That did it!

  • Firefox freezes on sites into which I enter info, like survey site and especially facebook.

Firefox freezes on sites into which I enter info, like survey sites and especially facebook. On a particular survey site, I filled in the dots for how much I like or disliked their product. After I was done, my firefox screen went grey and my computer became unresponive. I had to shut it down via task manager. The biggest problem is with face book. If I write long messages then I am okay... most of the time. It's inconsistent. But the result is usually a grey screen and I must follow the procedure above. I tried the same thing on myspace and oddly I didn't have this problem. Also, on facebook, while typing a message it will not scroll down when I get to the end of the page, such as this page just did now. Therefore I can't see what I'm writing at certain points. I recently reinstalled Vista Premium Home edition and then installed the newest version of firefox. Everything was fine til yesterday. So I reinstalled firefox and change my lag time to -1, but that didn't help either. Had a problem with adobe earlier too, so I don't know if that has anything to do with it. That's all I can think to tell you. Thanks for the help!

    Hello Kelly.
It's possible that you are having a problem with some Firefox add-on that is hindering your Firefox's normal behavior. Have you tried disabling all add-ons (just to check), to see if Firefox goes back to normal?
Whenever you have a problem with Firefox, whatever it is, you should make sure it's not caused by one (or more than one) of your installed add-ons, be it an extension, a theme or a plugin. To do that easily and cleanly, run Firefox in [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode safe mode] (don't forget to select ''Disable all add-ons'' when you start safe mode). If the problem disappears, you know it's from an add-on. Disable them all in normal mode, and enable them one at a time until you find the source of the problem. See [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes this article] for information about troubleshooting extensions and theme and [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting+plugins this one] for plugins.
If you need support for one of your add-ons, you'll have to contact its author.

  • Synchronizing local and remote sites

    Greetings
I created a site locally and then FTPed it up to a server at
my ISP. The site was working fine until I made a number of changes
that I note below. When in DW and I try try to preview in a
browser, I am unable to view any of the files in any browser
because DW is unable to locate the files locally and remotely.
The error message I get is:
Firefox can't find the file at
    /______/______/_____/_____/ThankYouVeryMuch/Website/tyvmi
    3/index.htm.
The changes that were made to the site:
    - I reorganized my folders locally thereby creating a new
root folder. When I tried to add 3 pages, I received several error
messages. One of them was that DW was unable to locate the home
page. Another was that it was unable to create the site map and if
I'm not mistaken DW was unable to create cache files.
    - My client had a friend add some Google analytics to the
site. This person also created an XML site map. Obviously, the
local and web sites were not synchronized so I was receiving more
    error messages.
    - I then downloaded the site to a new directory in the new
root folder I created above. This downloaded site is my local root
directory in the Site manager and is located at
    ./______/______/_____/_____/ThankYouVeryMuch/Website/tyvmi
    3/index.htm
    - These are my current directories for the site
