Site Owner Unable to edit site permissions

Hi,
On one of our site, me and my colleague both are site owners, but only I can edit the site permissions not him.
I'm an SCA. Does that make a difference? How can I troubleshoot this?
Thank you !
Regards,
prajK

Hello,
Just to clarify are you trying to add/remove users for a group? Or give direct permission to a user?
Site collection administrator has more permissions in general than a site owner.
Site collection administrators   These administrators have the Full Control permission level on all Web sites in a site collection. They have Full Control access
to all site content in that site collection, even if they do not have explicit permissions on that site. They can audit all site content and receive any administrative message. A primary and a secondary site collection administrator can be specified during
the creation of a site collection.
Site owners   By default, members of the Owners group for a site have the Full Control permission level on that site. They can perform administrative tasks on
the site, and on any list or library within that site. They receive e-mail notifications for events, such as the pending automatic deletion of inactive sites and requests for site access.
The above information are taken from here:

  • Group owners unable to edit groups

We migrated from portal version 3.0.9.8.5 to 9.0.2.6.18
using verison4 of the upgrade scripts.
Now group owners cannot edit groups.
However when i login as portal30_admin or assign

    Any pointers?

This is a known bug in this version. You need to open a TAR for the solution.

  • Unable to edit Hosts file in Win7 Home Prem 64bit.

Clean install.  Administrator account.  Unable to edit the permissions of the hosts file. There is one in the drivers\etc file, which I cannot edit. There is supposed to be one in %systemroot% \SysWOW64\drivers\etc   but there is no etc folder in the drivers folder.
Turned off DNS Server. gpedit.msc not found when calling it in "run".  This is the first time I've used 64bit anything, so a bit of a newb in that respect.
    Any ideas?

    Hi,
As you would know, some of the Windows 7 users can’t save the host file how they like it. The host file itself will simply vanish what the user had done with it.
In my scenario, I was unable to fix this even after all the instructions provided in above posts. Hence, I have come up with my own idea and luckily it
    worked.<o:p></o:p>
For those users who experience this problem, here are the instructions to fix it.
First of all, you should have the administrative privileges to edit the host file. In normal case, if an admin user directly go to the host file in system 32 and add his preferences
and then save it, it should keep the changes. However, in some wicked scenarios, it will not. I had done a detailed research on this through all the available online forums and even contacted Microsoft several times with no luck.
So, here you go with a correct solution for this problem.
Note: If you are not comfortable with Windows OS and don’t know what you are doing, this process can mess up things.
Hence, do not attempt if you are not 100% sure you can make it.
    Login to an administrator account.
In the run command (Windows key + R) type, “control folders” and hit enter.
Click on the tab called view.
Select the radio button for Show hidden files, folders and drivers –ON.
Uncheck the ‘Hide extension for known file types-ON
Click on Apply and then OK.
Type “drivers” in run command and hit enter. It will take you to where the folder “drivers” located in System 32.
From the “drivers” folder, double click the folder named “etc.”
Now you can see the “host” file along with others.
Now, in the search area in start menu, type “notepad.exe” and open the notepad.exe as administrator. (In order to do this, you can right click on the notepad.exe shown and select
“Run as Administrator.” If UAC prompted, click YES/OK)
Now, you will have a notepad open with administrative privileges.
At the top left side of the notepad click on “file” and then select “Open.”
A box will appear which will allow you select the file to open. Carefully, navigate to the location where the “host” file is located. To do that, select the drive where you
installed Windows. If you have the Windows installed in C: select ‘Local Disk (C :)’ > Windows > System 32 > drivers > etc. At this point, you might not have another option to proceed or select from. The window would be empty. To proceed further,
select the option “All files” from the drop down menu which is located above the “Open” and “Cancel” button. You can now see all the files located in etc folder.
Select “hosts” from the menu and click on “Open.” Note: You can either click on open or double click on the file.
Now, you will have the host file information open in the notepad which you had already initiated before with administrative privileges.
Make whatever changes you as you wish. (Example: If you need to block a web site called
    www.block123.com you can type 127.0.0.1
www.block123.com right under the local hosts.
Make sure you do not change any other letters or characters which are already saved in host file.
This will completely mess up your computer. For more information on the information about host file, refer the Microsoft web site:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/972034 . If you
have accidently delete/edit anything from host file, please delete the complete information stored in host file and copy and paste the host file information from Microsoft which is appropriate for your Operating System.)
Click on “file” again and select “Save as” and save it in etc. If the path is showing correct to etc folder, save it to etc. If it is navigated to somewhere else, follow the
instructions provided above and select etc folder and then save it.
Now, go back to the actual host file location which is in System32 > Drivers > etc (You would have it already open if you had followed the instructions just like the way
    I have provided)
There you can see 2 host files. One which has already been there and the other one you just saved.
Among the two, one is called “hosts” and the ‘type’ would be ‘file.’ This is the original host file. The other which you have just saved will be named as “hosts.txt” with the
    file type as ‘Text Document.’
Right click on the original host file and select rename. You can even click on that file and press F2. This will enable the option to rename the file. Rename the original host
file as “hostold” and hit enter.
Now, select the second host file which we have saved as a text document and rename it as “hosts.” Make sure that you DELETE the .txt file extension in order to change the type
“Text Document” to “File” and hit enter.
Now, you have successfully saved the host file with your preferences.
You can now delete the file which we renamed as “hostold.”
We are done. You would need to do this process all over if you need to edit the host file again. I know it is difficult, however, it is our own requirement and we have to invest
    few minutes on this.
Enjoy your computer with a great feeling that you have finally edited the host file as per your wish and take it from here. Wish you luck.
Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

  • Admins are unable to edit all sites?

    Hello and help!
We have designed three websites, all under the same site plan. From the admin panel, the admin is able to edit both site 1 and 2, but not site number three. Right now, we have
A-Master (admin is able to edit)
B-Master (admin is able to edit)
C-Master (admin is able to edit)
D-Master (admin is unable to edit)
A, B and C Master all have links that lead to D-Master, but you are unable to click on them from the admin panel, only edit them. D-Master DOES have it's own domain name. Does this make a difference? A, B and C master are all under the same domain. Keep in mind, D-Master was designed under the same site plan.
Any help would be so appreciated! Thanks!

Master pages can not be edited with IBE at this time.

  • Unable to set site permissions for AD group

    Hello,
I have upgraded TFS from 2012 to 2013 Update 2 and using SharePoint SP1.
The TFS server is installed in Domain A which has Trust to Domain B (domain B doesnt have trust to domain A). User account that the TFS runs under is from Domain B, also application pool in IIS runs under account from Domain B.
Problem is that i cannot add domain groups from Domain A to the site permissions, i can add users but not the groups.
The error i get when adding domain group from Domain A: "The user does not exist or is not unique"
Does anybody have that or had this kind of problem?

It is the Application Pool account making the query to retrieve the groups, so you would need to establish a trust from Domain B -> A.

  • Project Site Permissions Being Overwritten

    Hi there!
    We're on Project Server 2010.
We've been having an ongoing struggle with custom Project Site permissions being overwritten from time to time.  We've unchecked the auto sync for Project Site Permissions.  I believe that's working well.  I suspect where our troubles
come from are the PSI.  Calling QueuePublish through the PSI is the only way I've been able to replicate the issue.  However, we've been unable to find out what is making this call.  For example, Our tier 1 support person will
see all is well with a Project Site's custom permissions late in the afternoon.  But the next day the permissions will have been overwritten and it seems everyone in the Project Managers group and Web Administrators have been added back to the site.
I can even see in the ULS logs where it appears the Publish occured, but unable to identify what called it.
I also attempted the steps in this article ( http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh670402(v=office.14).aspx ) to disable synchronization for Project Sites (DisablePWS = 2) with no success.  Even when I use DisableAll (4) the user sync fires when
the QueuePublish is used through the PSI.  This would be a great solution if I can get it to work.
Has anyone had success completely eliminating PWA to Project Site permission syncs?  Either through identifying what jobs may trigger a full publish or by making the sync change detailed in the article I linked?
Thanks so much for your help!

  • Retrieve users who are not added to any group in site permissions page

    Hi,
In the OOB (Site Permissions) "user.aspx" page, I have some users who are directly added to the site and not part of any OOB or custom group.
Is it possible to retrieve only those users who are directly added to site permissions page programmatically  ( Using C# ) ?
    Thanks

    Hi,
    You can use the
SPWeb.Users property which “Gets the collection of user objects that are explicitly assigned permissions in the website”.

  • Cannot see user under site permissions

I added the user he has access but Cannot see user under Site Actions>Site Settings>Site Permissions. It shows on Site Users Web Part but not under site or library permissions.

Have you added the user to any SharePoint Group? This can be the possibility. Check in "People and Groups" link in Site Settings.Verify each group.
The group might be available in library permissions and hence the user can access the library.

  • Sharepoint 2010 - Hiding 'Site Permissions' on the Site Actions toolbar for an entire site collection

    Good morning,
I have been tasked with creating a feature that will allow a customer to hide the 'Site Permissions' menu option on the Site Actions toolbar.
I was thinking this could be done easly with a site scoped feature with a feature.xml as follows
and a manifest file like this
I think what I have listed is an incorrect HideActionID but I am not finding the correct ID listed anywhere in the documentation.
The other two custom actions that are in the manifest work perfectly and hide 'delete web' in site settings and add a new item to the site actions toolbar.
Can you point me to the correct HideActionId for site permissions or tell me where to look.

I will agree with Paul, but just in case if you dont change approach, below client side code may help.
    <script type="text/javascript">
    var doc = document.getElementsByTagName('ie:menuitem');
    for (var i = 0; i < doc.length; i++){
    itm = doc[i];
    if (itm.id.match('MenuItem_SitePermissions') != null){
    itm.hidden=true;
    break;
    </script>
    jQuery:
    $('ie\\:menuitem[id*=MenuItem_SitePermissions]').attr("hidden","true")

  • User unable to edit contacts

I have a user with Outlook 2013 connected to an 2010 Exchange Server. I have a user that is unable to edit any existing contact, getting an error: Your changes cannot be saved because you don't have permission to modify some or all of the items in this folder.
Do you want to save a copy of this item in the default folder for the item?
I have checked the permissions on the mailbox folder as well as the Contacts folder. The user has "Owner" permission to these folders.
No other users report the problem, and loading the users account on another computer demonstrates the same problem.
Any ideas what I am missing?

    Hi,
The error indicates that the issue is related to permission. I recommend you use the Get-MailboxPermission -Identity xxx |fl cmdlet to check if the permission is right. What's more, please check if OWA has the same issue.
If the issue persists, I recommend you remove the owner permission at first. Secondly, use the following cmdlet to add the owner permission and check the result.
    Add-MailboxPermission -Identity "xxx" -Owner "xxx"
    Hope it helps.

  • Unable to edit

I am a complete novice to Dreamweaver so please bear with me.
I am trying to edit some pages (.php files) for my employer. I was
able to edit the index.php file but none of the others. All of the
html code is greyed out except certain areas and unfortunately, the
part I need to change is greyed out. I am completely unable to edit
any of the greyed areas. I've looked all over to see if there's a
way to unlock the code but I can't see anything. Does anyone have
    any suggestions?

If you do not have the associated Template file, it *MAY* be
    a trivial
matter to recreate it. We would need to see the code on the

    whether that's possible, though.

  • Unable to edit document using "Edit with Word" option

    Hi All,
i am having an issue with Office web apps. i am using SharePoint 2013 and Office web apps 2013. all the configurations have been done successfully. but i have a different kind of issue.
i am able to open documents in browser
i am able to edit document using " edit with word/excel web" option
but i am unable to edit document using "edit with word/excel" option
i have Office 2010 installed on my local machine.
do we need to have MS office of 2013 version? or is there anything missing from configuration part.
    Please help me.
    Thank You,
    Bhaskar.

    Hi,
According to your post, my understanding is that you could not use the "edit with word/excel" option.
I had tested the issue with the Office 2010, the option worked well.
You don’t need to install the Office 2013 to use this option.
What did you mean “but i am unable to edit document using "edit with word/excel" option
Did you mean the option gray out? Did the issue occur in other browsers?
You can use compatibility mode to check whether it works.
    Open IE->Tools->Compatibility View Settings
You can also add the site into Trusted sites.
Open the IE->Internet Options->Security->Sites->add the site into the Websites, then check whether it works.
What's more, you can also use other browsers to check whether it works, such as Firefox, Chrome.
