In DW CS 5.5 Build 11.5, clicking on "Put" or "Get" generates the error message "An FTP error occurred - cannot make connection to the host" but at Site>Manage Sites>Server>Test, I get "Adobe DW CS 5.5 connected to your Web server successfully". Is there more than one place in DW to configure FTP? Thank you.

After not working for a week, suddenly today DW works. "Put" and "Get" both connect. The only thing I did in the interim was successfully run Site>Manage Sites>Server>Test several times over several days. I am grateful for whatever fixed the problem, but I cannot explain it. I thank those of you here who read and considered my question.

Mac + parallels and https site test = router restarts

Ok I have an interesting & very frustrating problem happening. I'm going to explain it the best I can.
I work as a graphic designer & web designer on a mac and have a Comcast internet connection that comes through a Comcast branded router (SMC8014) which then ties into an Airport Extreme Base Station which runs my office network. I run OS 10.5.7 and also run Parallels 4.0.3 (running Windows XP) for testing websites in Internet Explorer and so on.
Ok, so that the basic background. Here's my issue.
I've been collaborating an ecommerce website with another designer/developer and when testing the site on the PC side we have started to run into some sort of network problem. The site is https if that matters at all I suspect it may. Basically when I run parallels for testing I am constantly having to restart the router in order to connect to the test site (it's hosted). Funny thing is I can access the rest of the internet fine, just not this site I'm working on until I restart the router (It's sorta like the site is timing out). This never happens when just running the Mac side of things. It only becomes an issue when Parallels is open and I am doing page refreshes while making css or HTML edits via something like Coda or CSS edit (connected to the hosting server via ftp). The real problem is that once the problem starts I only get about 2 or 3 page loads before I have to restart the router again. It's absolutely crippling. I cannot get any work done when I have to restart the router every couple of minutes.
So, if you think this problem is isolated to me, the answer is no. The designer/developer I'm collaborating with has an office a couple miles away and experiences very similar problems under slightly different setup. He also has Comcast as his internet provider and connects his router to an Airport and primarily works on a mac. The main difference is that rather than using a visualizer like parallels to test the website on the PC he uses a real live PC that is on his network. Once he fire up the PC to do testing he runs into the same issue described above. After a couple of page refreshes in Internet Explorer or other browser on the PC the site becomes unresponsive and the router has to get restarted.
Any thoughts on what is going on here would be greatly appreciated.

Web Site Testing + Profiling

Does anyone know of a good web site timing and performance profiling tool? My web site takes ~10 seconds to load into a browser and I want to see the timing breakdown and specific bottlenecks.
I've used server side profilers but they indicate that my server takes under a second of processing which indicates that most of the slowdown is not occuring on my server. My site links to various other images, scripts, and ads hosted on other sites so those may be causing this issue.
Any ideas?

haven't done it myself but you may get a bit further having a program access the site instead of your browser....maybe some lag issues are in the rendering and not the serving....have a look at whats available with httpunit.

Site Test - Any comments

Just finished my first proper web site. Just doing it as a
hobby and been busy learning it from books and this forum for about
8 months now. Any way have a look see what you think. There are a
few thing which I know are good practice I havent done, Partly
because I learnt this afterwards and diddnt want to start again.
Anyway please have a look. I used divs & tables and
optimised everything as best I could. Oh and yes the bit of Flash
the client wanted :)

Love the use of the steel grid as a background! I frequently
find repeating textured backgrounds to be annoying &
amateurish, but this is definitely not the case... it's a perfect
fit for the business.
Also really like the subtle use of Flash on the main page.
Only thing I might change is the Legislation page. It's quite
long covers a variety of topics... you might think about splitting
the individual headings on this page off into their own separate
pages, with links from Legislation... you've already got the links
to the various anchor points in the page, but I think most
customers would rather read shorter pages then having to scroll up
& down a single long page. If you do keep the long page, I
would add "back to top" links at the end of each of the sections.
Same may apply to the "portfolio" page... if you add more
customers your page will get very long!

The Records Center requires the ability to set up email routing feature. The issue might occur App pool account didn't have proper permission to add a contact to active directory for the email enabled list.
To narrow down the issue, please perform the steps below to delegate full control of Organization to admin account and test the issue again:
a. Right click on the Organization and select "Delegate Control". Click Next and then Add.
b. Enter the account that will be using on the Central Admin site and then select OK.
c. Select Next and then select the "Create a custom task to delegate" radio button. Select Next.

Error in saving site as a template

hi,
i have created a site http://mysrvr/sites/test and i added - 20 doc libs and 8 splists, custom master page, discussion forum, calendar control and uploaddocumentcustom web part and custom
css file- as per my requirement . and i saved this site as as a template -
myGenericTempl.wsp. and when i have uploaded the resulting wsp to another site collection. and when i tried to activate this wsp, i was getting multiple errors.
1) enumeration constarint is failed
2) second time, i was getting the error " publshing site feature activate failed .. with featureid { 2344 }."
can someone help, by giving any pointers why this is happening.
also when i tried to navigate to create a new group/ site settings page, i am getting server eror in application.
first of all, would like to know whether http://mysrvr/sites/test cant be saved as a site template?
or is it not supported?

Yes you can save http://mysrvr/sites/test as template
But Publishing feature does not support "Save Site as Template" option

Site loads 1/2 way down cuts images and background but fine in IE

Site cuts background ~1/2 way down page, ~3/4 pictures load others don't (again near bottom of page), text also sometimes doesn't load at bottom of page.
Site is perfect in IE & Chrome
No firefox browser add on's, bone stock firefox recently updated.

TESTING SERVER ISSUES

I am new to dynamic site development. Am caught up in a very
basic issue. I am using XP Pro, IIS is working, am trying to set up
a ASPjavascript page. In "site definition", "testing files", my URL
is
http://localhost/test. "Test URL"
gives error "Dreamweaver cannot use the prefix you entered to
display live data Please double check your site configuration or
click Help for more information (HTTP error:12029)".
If I ignore this and complete the site definition, when I
make a new ASP javascript page, the Application Databases,
Bindings, Server behaviours etc don't work - "Set up the sites
testing server" is not checked
The IIS
http://localhost/ works fine. If i put
in a file in the test folder "index.html" and type in
http://localhost/test/index.html
, the page opens.
Details of the Site Definition settings are:
LOCAL INFO
Site : test
Local root folder : C:\inetpub\wwwroot\test\
Http address:
http://localhost/test/
TESTING SERVER
Server model :ASP javascript
Access : local/network
Testing server folder : c:\inetpub\wwwroot\test\

I've checked and re-checked IIS, Site definition settings.
I've been to as many forums as I could. I've un-installed and
re-installed dreamweaver - No luck.

You posted a reply to my problem regarding the "testing
server". I did things as you'd told but am still stuck with the
same problem. I can open the index page in the internet explorer by
typing in
http://localhost/test/index.html.
My problem is that when trying to make a dynamic page in
ASPJavascript, the "bindings", "server behaviours" etc won't work
as the third step "set up sites testing server" remains
"unchecked". In the database if I check "use DSN on testing server"
I get an error message saying that 1)There is no testing server on
the server machine 2) The testing server specified does not map to
the
http://localhost/test/_mmserverscripts/MMHTTPBD.asp
URL. Verify prefix maps to the root of the site.
I am certain that the IIS is working as I can access the
local host on the internet explorer.
I feel that the whole issue revolves around when I am working
on the Site Definition and at "SiteDefinition"-"Basic"-TestingFiles
stage, when I click "TestURL" it gives the error message that
dreamweaver cannot use the prefix entered to display live data.
I have been trying everything , but haven't been able to
resolve this very basic issue.

Local testing enviro/DW8 gone all wiggy

Hello all,
My local testing enviro was working perfectly...like a song.
Hell, even a full-blown chorus.
However, something got messed up and whenever I go to preview
in my local enviro with Dreamweaver 8 I now get this message:
The requested URL /[filename].php was not found on this
server.
I could have altered something in my sites testing server
info in DW8...can anyone help? I'm stumped!
...and I NEED to get on with it.

You're getting mixed up over the meaning of public_html.
Most hosting companies that offer PHP use the Apache web server, which has a single server root folder called htdocs. XAMPP also uses Apache, so c:/xampp/htdocs is the XAMPP server root, and its URL is http://localhost/.
Although Apache has only one server root, virtual hosts make it possible to run multiple websites on the same server. Each virtual host is located in a separate folder that acts as the site root. It's common for this folder to be called public_html. What bregent was describing was the location of the site root on your remote server. The name of the site root in your local testing setup can be whatever you decide to call it.
When learning to use PHP, most people use a subfolder of the Apache server root because it doesn't require further configuration. However, once you're working with real sites, it's normal to set up a virtual host for each one. I create all my virtual hosts in a folder called C:/vhosts. So for example, I might have one in C:/vhosts/site1. In the virtual hosts configuration file, I designate C:/vhosts/site1 as the root folder for a virtual host called site1, which can then be accessed as http://site1/.
The only reason I might have a folder called public_html is if I designated C:/vhosts/site1/public_html as the site root.
I hope that's clear. Once you understand the principle of virtual hosts, the concept of the site (or server) root becomes obvious, but it can be difficult to explain. I remember it took me a while before the concept sank in.

How to use Site collection url in feature xml

I think i am asking a very simple question but this question has realy desturbed me.
I want to deploy 2 script files using modules in style library.
here is elements.xml file of module.

Any thoughts would be very welcome.

We don't have Macs, but our client and some colleagues do.
It's clear he is troubleshooting a problem with the web site when viewed in the Mac version of Safari.
To ulysses69: While clearly many of us are willing to help with this (and I kind of enjoy it, personally), questions like this are probably better suited to other web sites that have forums for general web site testing and troubleshooting. Apple's forums are specifically intended for questions and answers about problems using Apple's products, which isn't really what you're looking for. That said, I don't have a problem continuing in this thread. Just be aware that there are probably more effective places for this kind of question.

How can I get DW to access my site frommy new computer?

I was using DW MX (yes!) successfully from my old computer (XP). But I have problems with the new computer (Windows 7). I transferred the copy of the site from the old computer to the new, installed DW, defined the site, tested the connection to the site successfully. When I make a change to the local copy of a page, save it, and Put it, DW says it has Put the file, but the web page doesn't update (after several attempts and refreshes). Can anybody help, please?

McAfee have taken the decision to rewrite the Firefox SiteAdvisor plugin to make it easier to update. This should ensure that Mozilla's fast-release schedule does not cause lengthy delays after future version updates. What it means for Firefox now though is that until the rewrite is complete - and tested - SiteAdvisor is being prevented from loading in Firefox in order to avoid the possibility of software incompatibility.
The SA rewrite is projected to take a few weeks to complete and test; it should be ready by about the third week of July, although the exact date is not being given at this stage. It could be earlier.
In the meantime, users who are concerned about the safety of websites may wish to consider WOT as a temporary substitute. WOT ratings are set by user consensus rather than by automated site testing, so WOT is not a full replacement for SiteAdvisor. It is, however, a good rating tool in its own right (I use both it and SiteAdvisor in all my browsers) and is apparently unaffected by the upgrade to FF5.
