Size and purpose of receipts folder

I have recently noticed that my /Library/Receipts/ folder is over a gigabyte in size, and cannot figure out the real value of having all that. What would I lose by excluding it from TM backups?
It seems to be holding on to every update I download and apply to my install. I understand (I think) that it uses this db to know what has been installed, and what not. but that seems an awful lot to keep to that end.
suggestions appreciated.

My folder contains 600MB, on a Mac that is four years old. 1GB is not unreasonable if one has a lot of software installed.
My advice is to leave that folder alone. With the size of today's hard drives, a single GB is not a significant difference. And if your free space is so low that 1GB is a significant difference, then it's time to get a bigger hard drive.

  • What is "InputManager" and why has"Receipts" folder changed?

    1st Topic: Current MacWorld article (May , pg 16-17) tells about the Leap-A trojan horse. However, it refers to a user Library folder named "InputManager" ... no such on my system...I wonder why not? I never use iChat.
    Is the Virus connected only to the 'Buddy List' ?
    2nd Topic: I seem to remember a rule to never delete the "Receipts" folder in System/Library/... /Receipts/... All 'Install' Icons were there to aid Update and other S/W. My Tiger (10.4.4) has no such folder.. I wonder what happened to it?
    Was it renamed?
    Everything works fine... updates, installs, etc etc... Just wondering...

    #2: Receipts are kept in /Library/Receipts, not
    /System/Library/
    HTH
    Thanx to Francine & baltwo for their reply.
    I understand the InputManager answer.
    baltwo: I remember now that indeed Receipts are in
    ~/Library/Receipts.
    BUT, I have none in my Tiger Production Volume....
    All that is in that folder are 3 folders from
    previous Adobe installs... the install.log for
    Acrobat Pro, Distiller & Reader...
    Did Adobe do that to my Library/Receipts? It could
    happen I guess however a FIND in each of the logs did
    not have any reference,
    I backup via SuperDuper! ... and I use the SANDBOX
    feature.
    GUESS WHAT?
    I FOUND a SANDBOX Volume that has the correct
    Receipts FOLDER! I have prepared the Production
    Tiger Volume and will copy the Receipts to it. I
    will
    then backup the Prod Vol...
    Then I am doing a backup of the User/HOME directory
    out to CD.
    Better to do that on a regular basis Huh? Cloning is
    NOT always enough!
    I updated to 10.4.4 with Achive and Restore but
    somehow during the Safety Cloning the Receipts got
    clobbered.... It's probably my fault...
    Thanx again... Jim B

    Receipts Folder: IT IS on all my Tiger Volumes: Production, Sandbox, Backup...
    I was confused with the fact that <Users/jbabcock/Library /...> is NOT the same as <Root/Library/Receipts/....> where Root is my Computer's name: followed by its /Library/... etc.
    So ALL my Volumes of Tiger DO have the Receipts folder... but NOT /Home/Library /.... Etc...
    I have only myself as the user.

    I was copying files to my time capsule when it crashed when it was almost finished. Now I am stuck with a light grey folder I can not delete. I would´t care if it wasn´t for the fact the folder is 1 TB size and takes up too much space. I have tried turning on and of Hiding Files in Finder and what not with no success. So, how do I delete this folder. Remember, I am not extremely familiar with technical terms.

    I recommend you erase the TC.. it is the easiest and fastest solution.
    In Airport utility open the disk tab and select erase.. choose quick erase.. it will take less than 1min.
    Start again but copy files in small amounts.

  • Discrepancy between iTunes Library size and stored folder size

    Hi
    I'm looking around for ways to clear up my computer's hard drive, and typically it seems that my iLife libraries seem to be the bulk of it. The main problem is that iTunes claims that my iTunes Library size is some 21GB, when the size of the "iTunes Library" folder claims all the music accounts to 26GB. This doesn't include any content in the 'TV Shows' or 'Movies' folders.
    The only thing I can think of is that not all of the music in my iTunes Music folder is in my iTunes Library... is there a simple way to check which ones aren't? Or is there another reason why there would be such a difference in the sizes?
    Thanks in advance.

    It may take some creative thinking rather than expertise to figure this one out.
    Oh, and my girlfriend got herself a standard MacBook a month ago, which has possibly sown the seeds of envy since it has as much RAM and a faster processor than my PowerBook MacBook Pro-wise, let's see what MacWorld in 2 weeks brings
    Then, it may be time to talk to the bank - or the finance people at Apple - about how best I can pretend I can afford one

  • LR4 and Camera RAW Cache folder

    Hi all,
    I know many are complaining about LR4 responsiveness and how LR3 was faster in response.
    Like many others, I have a new and very fast PC, however it seems that LR4 is crawling when it comes to navigtaing through images.
    I've done my share bit of tweaking LR4 to get the best optimized results such as, Optimize catalogs, Render 1:1 previews, Increase Camera Raw cache size to 30GB, move the Camera Raw Cache folder next to the catalog folder as Adobe recommends and what not.
    LR4 didn't become more responsive, however I did notice something strange, which is the topic of this post.
    While filddeling around with LR4 performance issues on my PC, I've noticed that even though I have over 20,000 images in my PC and some folders are rendered with 1:1 previews, the Camera Raw Cache folder is empty.
    This might explain why rendering 1:1 previews didn't affect LR4 while browsing images.
    For example, right after I've created the 1:1 previews (whether it's straight from import or after the fact) I'm browsing back and forth during this browsing action, LR4 renders the 2 images each and every single time I view them - that beats the purpose of using the cache folder.
    So one comes to think how could it be that with such a catalog size and 1:1 previews, the camera raw cache folder remains empty? And could this be the cause that makes LR4 render each and every single image time and time again regardless if I viewed the image a second ago?
    Thanks.
    Gil.

    Firstly, to clarify, Previews and Camera RAW files are not the same thing. Previews are simple, just jpeg representations of the raw file, at various resolutions used principally in the Library module and filmstrip.
    Camera RAW cache files are used by the Develop module and contain the output from some initial RAW processing. I don’t remember exactly what processing but about half that LR needs to do to render an image. This processing is done regardless of what you actually do in the Develop module so it is done once, then cached. This is why the “Loading” appears to take longer when you initially browse to an image in the Develop module. The rest of the RAW processing (about half) is done every single time you browse away from the image and back again. This is why you always get CPU spikes when browsing through images in the Develop module. So you can create as many 1:1 previews as you like, this will have no impact whatsoever on image rendering performance in the Develop module.
    So to answer your question specifically,
    Can you be more specific about when exactly does this folder being populated?
    A camera raw cache file is generated when you browse to an image whilst in the Develop module. Files continue to be generated until the cache size limit is reached, then as new files are generated, the oldest are deleted.

  • Can I trash all or part of RECEIPTS folder to save 500 mb of HD Space?

    I'm on a major campaign to free-up HD space on my 2006 MB (160 gb HD). I've found a folder in the RECEIPTS folder (Located here: /Library/Receipts ) and just wondering if these packages are still needed or whether I can trash all/some of them.
    ALSO: I replaced my MB 120 gb HD about a year ago with a 160 gb - but are there reliable 250 gb or ??? Hard Drives that would fit my MacBook (May 2006 - Intel Core Duo) --???
    Any other suggestions on files / folders that I can reduce in size or delete to free-up HD space?

  • How Can I Determine the Size of the 'My Documents' Folder for every user on a local machine using VBScript?

    Hello,
    I am at my wits end into this. Either I am doing it the wrong way or it is not possible.
    Let me explain. I need a vb script for the following scenario:
    1. The script is to run on multiple Windows 7 machines (32-Bit & 64-Bit alike).
    2. These are shared workstation i.e. different users login to these machines from time to time.
    3. The objective of this script is to traverse through each User Profile folder and get the size of the 'My Documents' folder within each User Profile folder. This information is to be written to a
    .CSV file located at C:\Temp directory on the machine.
    4. This script would be pushed to all workstations from SCCM. It would be configured to execute with
    System Rights
    I tried the script detailed at:
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/heyscriptingguy/archive/2005/03/31/how-can-i-determine-the-size-of-the-my-documents-folder.aspx
    Const MY_DOCUMENTS = &H5&
    Set objFSO = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
    Set objShell = CreateObject("Shell.Application")
    Set objFolder = objShell.Namespace(MY_DOCUMENTS)
    Set objFolderItem = objFolder.Self
    strPath = objFolderItem.Path
    Set objFolder = objFSO.GetFolder(strPath)
    Wscript.Echo objFolder.Size
    The Wscript.Echo objFolder.Size command in the script at the above mentioned link returned the value as
    '0' (zero) for the current logged on user. Although the actual size was like 30 MB or so.
    I then tried the script at:
    http://www.experts-exchange.com/Programming/Languages/Visual_Basic/VB_Script/Q_27869829.html
    This script returns the correct value but only for the current logged-on user.

    The only part pending, is to achieve this for the 'My Documents' folder within each User Profile folder.
    Is this possible?

  • How do I resize to 800x600 pixels and save in new folder or with new name

    I have tried and tried and read help but can't do this.  I like to crop my photos individually then save to about 800 wide or 600 high, obviously each photo after cropping will be and individual size and 800 wide may not be 600 high it might only be 435.  I understand the principle of custom mode and constrain, but the photo then keep reverting to the original cropped size.  I have been trying since I changed to apple some months ago, and my blog www.thebusphoebeandme.us has not been updated since June
    Any help in this would be appreciated, surely it must be easy to do and I am just missing the point.

    Why do you think the photo "keeps reverting to the original cropped size"? and what do you expect? when you crop then that is now the photo size unless you revert to original or undo the crop. How are you accessing the photos?
    probably the best way to do this is to export the photos to a desktop folder using the export option to set a maximum dimension then upload to you blog from that folder deleting the photos after uploading - see Exporting From iPhoto

    The ipad won't sync some photos, saying the file can't be read by the ipad, however it will sync some photos taken at the same time which are the same size and file type.  Why does it reject some and accept others?

    Hi there. I'm having the same problem: my iPad won't import some photos from a folder, saying that they can't be read. They are all JPEGS and some photos taken at the same time have synched fine, but out of a folder with 200 photos, it only lets me synch 37. I'm synching albums created via Photoshop Elements 6, which has worked fine until now.
    I've tried deleting all photos and re-synching, and have also deleted the iPod Photo Cache, but it hasn't made a difference.
    The iPad auto-updated to the latest version of iTunes, so maybe that's what's causing it?
    Any advice gratefully received!

  • [Forum FAQ] Reduce the size of System Volume Information folder

    Symptom
    There is a folder called System Volume Information in the root of each drive. (Figure 1)
    Sometimes, you may find the size of System Volume Information folder is too large. However,
    it is not recommended to delete the files in it casually since
    the System Volume information folder is
    created by the Operating System and used by Windows for storing critical information related to the system configuration.
    Figure 1.
    Note:
    The System Volume Information folder
    is a hidden system folder on each drive by default, you can show the hidden files and folders before accessing it.
    Cause
    In general, the System Volume Information folder contains
    System Restore points, Distributed Link Tracking Service databases, Content Indexing Service databases, WinFS databases and information used by the Volume
    Snapshot Service.
    If you enable shadow copies on a volume, more and more VSS snapshots will be created in the "System Volume Information" folder. Then the size of this folder will become
    too large.
    Solution
    You can follow the steps below to free up the space of System Volume Information folder safely:
    1. Delete the GUIDs files in System Volume Information folder using DiskShadow.exe.
    1) Open a command prompt with administrator privilege, then type “DiskShadow.exe” at the command prompt.
    2) Type “Delete shadows OLDEST <BackupStorageLocation>”
    at the command prompt.
    3) Type “Exit” to exit DiskShadow.exe.
    Note: Theoldestshadow
    copy in the folder will be deleted each time
    you run the commands. Before you run those commands, please
    make sure the oldest shadow copy is not useful to you.
    2. Changing the amount of disk space available to VSS
    1) Right-click on the drive you want to configure, and click “Properties”.
    2) Click “Shadow Copies” and then click “Settings”. (Figure 2)
    Figure 2.
    3) Choose “Use limit" and type the maximum size you want to set for the shadow copies, then click “Ok”.
    (Figure 3)
    Figure 3.
    Note: The extra shadow copies would be deleted in System Volume Information folder once you
    configure the Maximum size to a lower value than before.It
    will delete the older shadow copies firstly. Before you configure this setting, please make sure that you have enough space
    to create shadow copies.

    Hi,
    You could choose the shadow copies tap then choose Settings and then “use Limit" put in 1024MB, OK and OK, the drive would have plenty of free space.

  • Listing File, path, sizes and dates

    Hi all
    Case: I have 6 machines on one network (some with 2 drives), another on another network (connected by vpn) and 3 external drives.
    These all have accumulated stuff, some repeated as I've upgraded and re-purposed machines but left directories behind as a safeguard.
    I need to rationalise the space and develop a more systematic approach to backup and archiving.
    My first step is do an inventory of what's where and my natural approach is work with a data base of file name, path, size, created date and last modified to allow me to do some maths on archiving to dvd.
    Using find as follows
    find [Start Somewhere Directory] -print > [workspace path]/TestOutput.txt
    gives me a nice list of file name I can parse out in a database
    But I don't get size and dates.
    Adding -ls produces that info but creates header lines for parent directories and adds permissions, node and other info I don't need.
    I got to here
    find [Start Somewhere Directory] -type df -exec ls -lshk {} \; -print > [workspace path]/TestOutput.txt
    but still has the hierarchical output rather than flat paths.
    Am I doing this all the hard way ? Is there a tool that returns just what I'm looking for ?
    Or what command will allow me to take just the relevant columns form ls to the print parameter ?
    Or can I extend find to add the size and date info to the output ?
    Kind Regards
    Eric

    Eric
    I just so happened to have done something similar before!
    It relies on mdls so isn't exactly speedy, but produces a full path, size, modification date, modification time, creation date and creation time as a comma separated list. mdls is not exactly predictable as to which order you get its output, so basically you have to try first without any editing.
    Anyway, here it is:
    sudo find ~/testfolder -type f \! -name ".*" -exec echo 'mdls -name kMDItemFSSize -name kMDItemFSCreationDate -name kMDItemFSContentChangeDate "{}" | tr "\n" "," | sed "s%^\(/.*\) .*ChangeDate = \(....-..-..\) \(.*\) .CreationDate.= \(....-..-..\) \(.*\) ...00,.FSSize.= \(.*\),$%\"\1\",\6,\2,\3,\4,\5%"' \; | shI'm sure it could be improved!
    You could also do it with AppleScript, since that can access the creation date easily.

  • How to count files in a folder and subfolders of the folder.

    Hello everyone,
    I'm having a difficulty with countin files in a Regular folder and subfolders of the folder. I've tried to use SI_ANCESTOR  in a query; however, it gives me innacurate results.
    I used this hierarchy to create the code below, and it works to count all the files:
    Folder A ---> Folder B( subFolder of A)  -
    > Folder C(subFolder of B)
    //get folder A
    IInfoObjects regFolders = infoStore.query ("SELECT * FROM CI_INFOOBJECTS WHERE SI_KIND='Folder' AND SI_PARENTID=0 AND SI_NAME!='User Folders' Order by SI_NAME");
    IFolder regFolder = (IFolder) regFolders.get(0);
    //get files from Folder A
    IInfoObjects rFiles = infoStore.query ("SELECT * FROM CI_INFOOBJECTS WHERE SI_PROGID !   = 'CrystalEnterprise.Folder'   AND SI_PARENTID=" + regFolder.getID() );
    ilesCount += rFiles.size();
    int subCntr=0;
    nt subCntr2=0;
      //get folder B
    IInfoObjects rSubFolders = infoStore.query ("SELECT * FROM CI_INFOOBJECTS WHERE SI_PROGID = 'CrystalEnterprise.Folder' AND SI_PARENTID=" + regFolder.getID() );
    //get files from subFolders of Folder A
    while (subCntr < rSubFolders.size())
              IInfoObject subFolder=(IInfoObject)rSubFolders.get(subCntr);
              IInfoObjects subFiles = infoStore.query ("SELECT * FROM CI_INFOOBJECTS "
          + " WHERE SI_PROGID != 'CrystalEnterprise.Folder'" AND SI_PARENTID=" + subFolder.getID() );
             filesCount += subFiles.size();
             //get subFolders of Folder B
             IInfoObjects rSubFolders2 = infoStore.query ("SELECT * FROM CI_INFOOBJECTS WHERE SI_PROGID = 'CrystalEnterprise.Folder' AND SI_PARENTID=" + subFolder.getID() );
                         //get files from subFolders of Folder B
         while (subCntr2 < rSubFolders2.size())
              IInfoObject subFolder2=(IInfoObject)rSubFolders2.get(subCntr2);
              IInfoObjects subFiles2 = infoStore.query ("SELECT * FROM CI_INFOOBJECTS "
                   + " WHERE SI_PROGID != 'CrystalEnterprise.Folder'  AND SI_PARENTID=" + subFolder2.getID() );
                                               filesCount += subFiles2.size();
               subCntr2++;
              subCntr++;
    As you can see, the code is too complicated, and what if folder C has subFolder?
    I'm guessin maybe recursion would be one way to got, but I'm not really good with it, so I was wondering if anyone has any idea on how to go about doing it.
    Thank you,

    Hi,
    For detailed information, please refer to the BI 4.0 developers guide here.
    You can find the section "Setting up the development environment" in developers guide that have every single instruction to execute a java code specific to BI 4.0 environment.
    Also, here are the instructions for BO 3.1 environment:
    To configure a WAR file for a J2EE application that uses the BusinessObjects Enterprise XI 3.0 and 3.1 Java SDK, complete these steps:
    Create a lib folder in the WAR file's WEB-INF folder.
    Copy the Enterprise XI 3.0 or 3.1 Java SDK JAR files from the appropriate location below to the WAR file's WEB-INF\lib folder:
    Windows:
    ...\Program Files\Business Objects\common\4.0\java\lib
    UNIX:
    <businessobjects_root>/java/lib
    Copy the log4j.jar file from the appropriate location below to the WAR file's WEB-INF\lib folder:
    Windows:
    ...\Program Files\Business Objects\common\4.0\java\lib\external
    UNIX:
    <businessobjects_root>/java/lib/external
    Copy the entire crystalreportviewers12 folder from the appropriate location below to the WAR file's root folder.
    Windows:
    ...\Program Files\Business Objects\common\4.0
    UNIX:
    <businessobjects_root>/enterprise12/JavaSDK
    Open the web.xml file located in the WAR file's WEB-INF folder.
    Specify the location of the utility files used by the report viewers contained in the crystalreportviewers12 folder by inserting the following code below the <display-name> and <description> tags but within the <webapp> tag definition:
    <context-param>
    <param-name>crystal_image_uri</param-name>
    <param-value>/BOXIR3/crystalreportviewers12</param-value>
    </context-param>
    <servlet>
    <servlet-name>CrystalReportViewerServlet</servlet-name>
    <servlet-class>com.crystaldecisions.report.web.viewer.CrystalReportViewerServlet</servlet-class>
    </servlet>
    <servlet-mapping>
    <servlet-name>CrystalReportViewerServlet</servlet-name>
    <url-pattern>/CrystalReportViewerHandler</url-pattern>
    </servlet-mapping>
    Deploy the WAR file to the J2EE application server.
    You are now able to run an application using the BusinessObjects Enterprise XI 3.0 and 3.1 Java SDK on a J2EE web application server.
    Hope it helps.

  • Image size and resolution question.

    Is an image at W 48.667 x H 32.444 inches at 72 res the same as an image that I could convert in photoshop to 300 res and then the with "Resample Image" clicked off would be W 11.68 x H 7.78 at 300 res for printing purposes? I'm asking this questions because after exporting 200 images from Lightroom 1.4, putting them into an wedding album I realized the images were not at 300 res but the first size listed above. I'm trying not to have to rebatch and have to put them back into the album. I sent the question to NAPP and got this back"
    "If you do the math you'll see that the answer is "no."
    48x72=3456 pixels; 32x72=2304 pixels
    11.68x300=3504 pixels; 7.78x300=2334 pixels."
    I did the math and it comes up to 5760 vs 5830. Pretty darn close. So would an image printed out with both settings print the about the same quality or am I missing something?
    Thanks
    Bob

    Bob's question is a common one. And one of the first that most of us struggled to understand. Let's see if I can shed some light to help clarify the matter.
    o The image starts out with a given number of pixels from the camera, scanner, or whatever was its source. The resolution only matters when it comes time to print the image.
    72 dpi was once a common resolution for displaying on a computer monitor. Today 90 dpi is more common monitor resolution.
    o Let's assume that the image is 3504 x 2336 pixels (which I got from his size @ 72 dpi).
    o In "image size", if you do _not_ have 'resample image' checked, all you are doing is _rescaling the image. The image resolution is whatever you enter ...
    For example, if you enter 360 dpi -- the native printing resolution of many Epson printers -- you get a print size of 9.733 x 6.489 inches
    o Let's say you want to print this image at 360 dpi in portrait on 13 x 19 inch paper with a one inch border on the sides. That would make the short dimension of the image 11 inches and the long would work out to 16.5.
    To do that you need to _resample_ the image to change the size. More pixels will be made. The resolution stays at 360 dpi. So check the 'resample image' box.
    After resampling to get the print size and resolution you want, the pixel dimension goes to 5960 x 3960 (from 3504 x 2336). Those new pixels came at a price, but that is a matter for another thread and a lot of personal bias.
    Hope that helped.
    P.S. The answer to your question, Bob, is yes. With resample off in PhotoShop, your original images should have gone to 11.68 x 7.787 inches @300 dpi.
    In looking at the rest of your original post, it seems that the export didn't work the way that you wanted. Do I read right that the images turned out to be 11.68 x 7.787 @ 72 dpi? Can't help with that as I don't do Lightroom.

  • How do I change the name of file from save in web receipts folder?

    I use safari to do online banking and when I have paid a bill or transferred money and when it is complete I use save to web receipts folder to keep a record of the transaction.
    The problem is that the page always has the same name so there is only the record of the last transaction for that service. Does anyone know a way to change the same of the file that is saved?

    Hi DPertovt,
    After you download/save the file to your destination folder where you keep your records, only select the file ones an rename/chance the file name, date anything you like.
    Good luck ...
