I need some information about size converting in the business warehouse.
We have a problem with our current solution and I was wondering if there is a mechanism in a newer release of AFS which handles the conversion of sizes (e.g. shoe size in different countries).

File Size Conversion Problem

I recently began to see large pdf files being generated intermittently, even at relatively low dpi.
So to test, I took two jpg photos and converted them to pdf using Acrobat 9.2 Pro at 72, 144, 300 and 600 dpi. The resulting pdf file sizes are 106KB, 1920KB, 1195KB and 361KB respectively. I have never experienced this problem before, so I un-installed and re-installed the program, but got the same results. Any thoughts? Thanks

Any details on how you did the conversion? Are they B&W, grayscale, 256 colors, or a 24-bit color graphic? What is the size?
Of course you may also see compression aspects coming in. How you select the DPI can make a difference. In one package I have, when I adjust the DPI, the size changes and the resultant file size when printed to PDF remains about the same. The size combinations you give seem real strange, but it may be a combination of DPI, size of graphic, and downsampling by Acrobat. If you do not want the latter, then you should probably use a Press or Print setting if printing to retain the max resolution of what you are printing.
Note I feel into a discussion of printing, but you may have done something differently. How you set the DPI could be an issue. If these were graphics that you imported into a PDF, then give the graphic size, not just the DPI. We have to be able to replicate your problem to help in many cases. We at least need to know the steps you used as the answer may be starring us all in the face when the steps are provided.

sorry for all of you guys, this is my first time on a forum, really it seems more than just ask a question to get the answer on the run, for me in one day i have learned from you guys what takes me a while to learn it my own.

Format Size vs. Current Size

I hope I don't complicate this too much...here is the deal:
Captured Video:
Frame Size: 720 x 480 (which makes no sense to me because it is a 16:9 video)
Vid Rate: 29.97
Compressor: DV/DVcPRO - NTSC
Data Rate: 3.6 MB/sec
Pixel Aspect: NTSC - CCIR 601
So I take that video and clip here and clip there and then export out of FC using the "Current Settings" (gives me a .mov file). When I open the clip up in Quicktime it displays normally for me on my Mac. It says the Format is: DV, 720 x 480 (853 x 480), Millions 16-bit Integer (Little Endian), Stereo, 48.000 kHz. But the weird part to me is that it says the current size is 853 x 480 (which is 16:9).
When I compress it down to an MPEG4 with Compressor it looks good on the Mac but as soon as I upload it and play it through a browser it reverts back to a 4:3 squished look. Also if I play it through QT on a PC it does the same thing. However, I can open the same file on the Mac and it looks just fine. It seems the difference has something to do with the Format Size vs. the Current Size.
I'm stuck...I want this to look good but it just is not happening. What am I missing?

720 x 480 NTSC is rectangle pixels for TV displays. 853x480 is square pixels for computer displays. When you compress to MPEG-4 in Compressor go to the Geometry tab and set the size to 853x480. The Pixel Aspect will automatically change to square.
You may if you want too, turn on Frame Control and set the Resize Filter to Better. This will give a better size conversion and add a little time to the MPEG-4 compression.

Problems turning Illustrator pages into PDFs at the SAME SIZE...?

Something weird is happening for me, when I attempt to turn Illustrator layouts in PDFs or maybe it's "normal" for Acrobat to do this, but I don't like it and I want to fix it...
I have a page laid out in Illustrator. It's RGB, 1024x768 pixels in size, and has various JPGs at 72dpi placed on the page, and it has text on it too.
Everything is laid out pixel-perfect, and when I view it at 100% size in Illustrator, that's the size I want to the PDF to be as well, when the PDF is viewed at 100% size. The PDF is going to be viewed on-screen and the images contained in the file have various lines and suchlike in it that absolutely have to be viewed at 100% size, or they appear all blurry.
So I have my Illustrator document, at 100% size, and it looks perfect. I go to File > Save A Copy and save a version of it as a PDF.
I use the Illustrator Default settings (which, when I go through them all one by one, would indicate to me nothing about a file size conversion, no downsampling, etc.) and my PDF is generated.
However... when I then open up the PDF file in Acrobat Professional, the page it has created is way larger than my Illustrator page. So if I view my new PDF at 100% size, not only has the 72dpi image gone all blurry, but the boundaries of the page extend off the edge of my screen.
I would hazard a guess that in order to get my PDF to appear at the size it *should* be, I have to view it in Acrobat at *about* 75% - but the images are still blurry, because of the re-sizing.
So all I'm asking is for a simple way to get what's in Illustrator to convert to PDF at the same size.
Surely there must be a way?
Any help anyone?
I'm using Illustrator CS3 13.0.2 and Acrobat Professional 8.1.2, running on Mac OS X 10.5.2 on Intel.

No, that is your current magnification. Your resolution is set in the
"page display" section of Acrobat's preferences. Each user can set it
differently.

can't do is do pixel-level design. You can control the open options,
like what magnification, whether the full page is visible, but you

Not able to run the job with user id - is

Hello experts,
We have problem.
Every day we run the job.
( the job contians two programs called ZTIBCOPRG and J_5HJSTP )).
I would like to know why the above job is running with the user ID TIBCOADM. Because this user has German settings for the size conversion in program ZTIBCOPRG and we are having some issues.
We changed the user to TIBCOUSA and the job would not run.
We have changed the user back to TIBCOADM. It is running.
KINDLY HELP ME WITH YOUR VALUABLE inputs. YOUR HELP WILL BE HIGHLY APPRECIATED.
I have checked for both users in AGR_USERS table.
The AGR_USERS is the old user and have many roles compared to userid TIBCOUSA.
WHERE WE NEED TO SEE . IS it authorisation problem or the other user with whom unable to run the job ?
or is this the error in the program ZTIBCOPRG which is not able to do size conversion and causing some issues.

Hi,
after running the job with user id TIBCOUSA, it should be in cancelled state as per your comments.
you just select the cancelled job and type JDBG in command box and enter it takes you to Debug mode.
There you may get some information where it is failing.

DV PAL preset?

I have heard that there is something called the "DV PAL Preset" that you can select in Compressor, but I don't know how to find it in the program (to convert from NTSC to PAL)
Please help ASAP!

Any frame rate conversion or size conversion requires re-encoding. NTSC to DV PAL requires both size and framerate conversion.
As far as I can see, there is no default Setting for DV, but you can copy any of the existing settings to make a custom setting, and then set the file format to "DV stream", and select "PAL" as the format. Then make sure to enable Frame Controls and set Rate Conversion to "Best", and Duration to "100% of source". You probably also want at least "Better" Resize filter.
Please don't ask two questions about the same basic problem, and please search the Discussion group before asking. Chances are that basic questions like this have been answered before.

Compressor Help for HDCam Tape Layoff

I have footage that was shot on the RED, graded and output via Apple Color, and now has the following specs:
resolution: 2048x1152
pixel aspect ratio: square
frame rate: 23.98
field dominance: none
and I need to lay it off to HDCam for screening purposes. The venue has requested
"an Apple Pro Res QT to be laid off to HDCam tape at 1080i/59.94"
What's the best way to get them my footage without it getting mangled in the process?

As noted above, there are 6 versions of "ProRes Quicktime". It doesn't hurt to verify exactly which one.
Getting it done ....
Open up Compressor
Select the appropriate ProRes preset in Settings. It can be found in Apple> Advanced format conversions folder.
Copy it and select the copy in the Settings list.
Go to the Inspector window.
Change the name to something meaningful to you - "Red to ProRes 1080i" would work for me.
Start working through the settings. The key thing to keep in mind is you are turning a progressive 23.98 large raster image into an interlaced 29.97 smaller raster image. You will want to have FRAME CONTROLS turned on to get the best frame rate and image size conversion.
Do some tests with smaller segments to judge time vs quality. Unless there is a decided quality benefit THAT YOU CAN SEE, stay away from BEST. It adds enormously to the time.
Or, find someone with a Kona3 that can do the conversion to 1080i ProRes for you in hardware.

Best way to downconvert from HD to SD for SD DVD... Help...

Ok gentlemen... I'm some tens of hours into this frustration and have hardly any hair left to pull out.
I'm building a main menu for SD DVD in DVDSP.
The entire menu is a quick time file with all graphics and text included, set as back ground in DVDSP, with the buttons drawn over the top.
So Im in FCP building this video for the background of my main menu. It is a composite of video, some motion graphics, live type some and Photoshop stills.
Im building for SD however I want the menus to appear 16x9 and since most of my footage is HDV 1080i I built everything in 1080i thinking I could down convert after.
my first out put was HDV 1080i60 which is native... what I have been editing and compositing in through out. It looks fine.
I run this 1080i Qt through compressor multiple times trying to convert to DV NTSC 4x3. 720x480 3x2... I try every combination I can think of... crop dont crop letter box, anamorphic... everytime my resulting QT is either distorted or degraded beyond acceptability. the text has fallen apart the video is fuzzy etc. All I want to do is Down convert to SD!
So I bring the original 1080i output back into FCP because I don't want it to have to re-render this monster every-time I out-put. It looks exactly the same when viewed from FCP. I try to do the same thing with QT conversion... same problem.
So next I tried to do it in FCP by simply creating a new sequence with the desired dv settings and making the size conversions and re-rendering. same deal.
I went back to DVDSP and Attempted to create an HD project... new project ... modify the project and general prefrences. I cannot import the original HDV 1080i video output as an asset. the message reads incompatible format.
Question is :
Can anyone recommend to me the method, the format, and the program to convert HDV1080i60 to what ever SD format DVDSP will haphazardly accept... please... anybody.
I realize that some of you would like to know what the specs are on this vast multitude of useless dv QT's that I have produced. unfortunately I do not have the energy to produce such post. J/K I will be glad to supply whatever data i have failed to list here if it will help some on to help me. Ask away...

If your final output is SD, I would set the camcorder to downconvert to DV and capture the footage as DV. Then you don't need to worry about the whole HD->SD thing anymore and things will happen much faster.
Also, if you're creating an asset that will be rendered by DVDSP into a menu by adding buttons, etc, I wouldn't compress it to .m2v prior to importing into DVDSP. The reason is you'd be compressing (i.e. throwing out information) and then adding your buttons and then letting DVDSP recompress the menu again and throw out even more information leading to poorer quality.
Finally, you mentioned your source footage is 16:9 and you want 16:9 menus. Why did you convert to 4:3?

Mpeg2 DVD VOBs Video and Audio into QuickTime ?

How can I read the mpeg2 VOB files from some DVD that we created into QuickTime Pro with the MPEG2 playback component ?
We have an app that does video and audio processing built on QuickTime. After the processing is done the result is written to an mp4 file using QuickTime export. We now have to be able to read DVDs that we create into this app (QuickTime), and after processing we must se the QuickTime export option to create the mp4 file. These are not commercial DVDs and are not copy protected. I'd like to just be able to read the mpeg2 video and audio directly into QuickTime but I haven't yet found a good way to do this. Here is what I have tried:
1) I can read individual VOB files with QuickTime, but I don't get any audio and I need all the VOB files as one.
2) I have used MPEG Streamclip to open the DVD VOB files and exported the demuxed mpeg2 video and aiff audio. Both files open together in QuickTime but since the total size of the video is over 4 GB the video and audio are off and drift more so throughout the video.
3) I used libdvdread to read the DVD and create a single MPEG2 file. This can be read by QuickTime but I don't get any audio. From what I understand this is muxed video and audio which QuickTime doesn't understand, but is playable by VLC.
I think I could probably ulibdvdread to read the VOB files into a muxed MPEG2 file, then use ffmpeg to convert this to a very large DV stream, then import that into QuickTime, but there has to be a better way than to do the lengthly and large file size conversion to DV which is not a format I ultimately want.
Before we go and write our own, I'm looking for a simple way to read the mpeg2 video and audio from a DVD format directly into QuickTime and preferably something that can be integrated into our app and not use another commercial stand alone app.

OK, I can't tell you what we are doing, you'll have to trust me that it's for a very good cause. I'll simplify the use case as an example. If I can do the following we'll be OK:
1) Read video/audo files from a DVD that we created
2) Open these files with the QuickTime Player, click on Export to Apple TV to create an output file.
I'd rather not do an interim conversion of the video data (like use a 3rd party app to convert to mp4 first and then read into QT, but I'm considering a conversion to DV) because that could seriously hurt the apps effectiveness. I also can't use another app (MPEG Streamclip, HandBrake, VisualHub, etc.) to do the conversion.

hello all, forgive me for being such a newbee, but i have more shake woes...
my project consists of many formats, ntsc, pal, dv, hdv, pal.
i need to assemble a tourrist video compiled of various archive material...the problem is, among others, a lot of this material has already been edited and needs in many cases time remapping.
we ran a test editing with fcp and then sending the edited material to shake for size conversions and retiming. my problem is when i click remap or speed, the clip shifts in time and i am left stranded somewhere within me original material. this caused me a lot of stress and my client now believes i am incompetent, which i very well maybe.
my question is...is there anywhy i can avoid this or is there a simple way i can change the time shift or starttime to easily compensate for this?
or whould you simply suggest that we do all time remapping on the uncut material render that out, import back to FCP and act like this nightmare had never happend?...

The easiest way is to do as Zeb suggests, export your clip as a non-self contained quicktime, import that and send it to Shake.
To do it within Shake involves a little math. If you look at the FileIn node in the timing pane, you'll see a timeShift, inPoint, & outPoint. TimeShift is most often a negative value and it's measured in frames.
You basically divide your timeShift by your speed change to get the corrected timeShift. If you wanted to run a clip at half speed (.5) and your timeshift was -400, you'd get -400 / .5 = -800. Put that value in and you should be good to go. Take a look at Captain Mench's tutorials for more info on this...

Imported stills become pixellated once dragged into the timeline?

I have a frustrating problem. I have generated a 768x576 pixel image (PNG format) for a PAL project which I import into FCE. When the file is double-clicked in the Browser to view in the Viewer, it looks nice and sharp (Viewer window with 200% magnification):
But when I drag that image into the timeline and render it (all video render options are ticked), it looks pixellated and frankly terrible in comparison:
When exported as a movie it also comes out like this. How do I keep this image looking clear and sharp? What is going wrong?

No, not yet, I'm trying to understand why the same image looks different in the Viewer compared to the Timeline. With a bit more digging and reading, part of the problem is the way image conversions are done between the square pixel computer world and rectangular pixel DV world (I'm sure you're familiar with http://lipas.uwasa.fi/~f76998/video/conversion/>this).
Following the pixel aspect and frame size conversion algorithm exactly in Photoshop, and using Quicktime to convert that to a DV frame, I now get a DV frame that matches the aspect ratio and size of the original PNG image. But the DV image still looks much softer and more pixellated than either the original PNG image or the Photoshop processed image.
To my simple brain, I don't see why the DV encoding algorithm should cause so much image degradation when applying the same algorithm in Photoshop produces a much crisper result. Do DV codecs use poor image resampling algorithms or something?
Is there any way to produce a crisper image in DV?

Canon 5D mark II raw file conversion size blowout

I am suffering from an issue where my CR2 files from a 5D decrease in size when converted to DNG from for example 14.4MB to 11.8MB while the 5D mark II files increase from 8.7MB to a much larger 23.6MB after conversion. Both conversions are being done with DNG Converter 5.4 using the same preferences. Any light you could shine on this for me would be greatly appreciated.

It is because your 5D Mark II files are sRAW images, not raw. (The full 5D Mark II raw files are usually over 20 MB, not ~8 MB.) When you process sRAW files into DNG files, the DNG files are stored in the "linear DNG" format, which is much bigger than the sRAW format.
p.s., these questions should be directed to the Camera Raw, Lightroom, or DNG forums in the future to get a faster reply.

SAP Data File size considerably reduced after Unicode Conversion

I have just performed a CUUC (Upgrade along with unicode conversion) from R/3 4.7 to ECC 6.0 EHP5. The data size that i earlier had was close to 463 GB (MSSQL MDF, LDF Files), after the data export to be converted to unicode the size was 45 GB (10% of actual data size, i feel this is normal after heterogeneous system copy), but after the import again the DATA file size is only 247 GB, is this normal ? or have i lost some data ? For ex, I tried checking tables like MSEG and the number of entries have reduced from 15,678,790 to 15,290,545.
Could you kindly let me know if there is a way to check from Basis perspective if i have not lost any data ? I have followed all the procedures as per SAP Standards.

Data is compressed during the new R3load procedure is understood, but why number of table entries have reduced is something which is still a question to me (in some cases increased as well) ? For example
