Size of iPhoto Library greatly over estimated by Aperture on import.

Trying to import a 106GB iPhoto library into Aperture. I get "Error Importing Library. 1500.80 GB is needed, but only 469.29 GB available." Anyone know what's up? Both apps on latest version.

I wasn't able to export the iPhoto library until I followed a tip to place all the projects into a folder. That worked and then new Aperture library seems to be an exact replica of the old iPhoto library.
It hasn't solved anything though, as I now get this: "1896.37 GB is needed, but only 464.40 GB is available." It's gotten worse as it said 1500GB yesterday.
Both libraries are on the latest release and I have ca 25.000 images in the old library. It is just short of 106GB on disk.

What version of iPhoto do you have?
The maximum size of a library for iPhoto 05 or earlier is 25k items
For iPhoto 6 - to iPhoto 09 is 250k items
For iPhoto 11 it's 1,000,000 items.
There is no limit on the HD space. So, to iPhoto it matters not if the library takes up 10 gigs of space or 1,000 gigs of space.
In practise, there are other considerations of course: how much Ram do you have on your machine? Remember always to have to at least 10 gigs of free space on the disk.
FWIW: I have 52k items in a Library. It runs perfectly well. We've seen reports on here from folks in with in excess of 100k items in the Library - and one in excess of 300k items.

I don't think my old mac will support the newer version of iPhoto so I feel like I'm stuck (this is why I got a new mac -- cheaper than upgrading all my software, etc). Help! I really need to get to my old photos, and no, they are not backed up anywhere. Thanks.

You have two options:
Run the Library on a machine that has the same version as the machine that was stolen.
or
Recover the files from this library and start over from scratch.
To recover the files:
Go to your Pictures Folder (or whereever you have the back up) and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Your originals are in the Masters folder.
Note this will only recover your photos as imported from you camera.

Copying an iPhoto library on an iMac to Aperture on a mbp

Anyone have a suggestion for copying my big iPhoto library on an iMac to Aperture on my Mbp?

If you want to have the iPhoto library on the iMac and that Aperture library on the MBP then copy the whole iPhoto library over and then use Aperture to import it. You can then keep, or delete, the iPhoto library. What you can't do is keep them is sync easily.

According to you youo did not do what I instructed - you said you imported the old library into th enew library which can easily take a 2000 photo library and turn it into 12,000 including two ro three versions of each photo pus all the face thumbnails
The correct procedure has NO importing involved
drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac

Open your iPhoto Library package with the Finder as shown in this screenshot
and look in the folder named Auto Import. Move any files in that folder to a folder on the Desktop and close the package. Do not make any other changes. Launch iPhoto (the message should be gone) and drag the folder on the Dersktop into the open iPhoto window to import them.

Aperture 3 Library size vs iPhoto Library

Hi!
I recently switched from iPhoto to Aperture and am wondering about the library size? In iPhoto the library size was bloated because it made a copy of every photo behind the scenes upon import. I got tired of that and thought that moving to Aperture would solve the problem. But, after importing most of my photos into Aperture, then comparing the size of my Aperture Library package with the size of my Photo folder in Finder that I imported from, I'm finding my Aperture library is over 100 GBs bigger!! Yikes! How did that happen?
I am running a managed library, but I thought Aperture didn't make a copy of every photo behind the scenes but rather just made versions of the master when changes are made.
Frankly, I haven't even done any editing yet, just importing. So, why the huge library size compared to the size of my Photo library in Finder? It's 186 GBs versus 85 GBs. Same photo collection. Crazy.

No, from folders in Finder. I always have my photos in Finder too on an EHD, even after I import them to iPhoto or Aperture.

How do I reduce file size of iPhoto library that's had photos deleted?

I created a calendar in my iPhoto library (which contains thousands of photos). I want to save the calendar now as a separate library with just the calendar in it. I duplicated my iPhoto library and deleted everything except for the dozen or so images used in the calendar. However my iPhoto library is still over 10GB! I've checked the trash is empty and I've rebuilt the database. Is there anything I can do to reduce the file size of the library?

Empty the system trash. If that doesn't help:

Is there an iPod Photo Cache? You can delete that too...

Determining folder sizes inside iPhoto Library Package, eg Originals/2009

In iPhoto '09 is it possible to determine (in an automated fashion) the size of the folders inside the Originals folder inside the iPhoto Library Package.
I'm working on a MacBook Pro with limited space so I wanted to identify the folders that are taking up the most space and try to remove them.
Specifically, I'm looking at the following location:
Originals/2008/...
Originals/2009/...
Those seem to be the largest folders, so removing some of the largest ones will really help for a trip I have coming up.

Thanks for the info on DiskInventoryX. Unfortunately it cannot look inside of the iPhoto Library Package, so I guess I need to keep looking into the true format of a package... Is a package similar to a tgz file?
It is unfortunate that the Mac doesn't automatically list the size of the contents of folders in the finder. Having that information listed in the finder would be very beneficial...
Since it sounds like iPhoto is so sensitive about folder structure modifications and does not have the ability to adapt to changes, I may need to look into another program that is a bit more forgiving for working with large numbers of photographs that are only temporarily on the MacBook Pro before being moved over to the Desktop. My workflow requires that most photos and videos are temporarily stored and worked on the MacBook Pro and then (a few weeks over) moved off and over to a desktop for permanent storage and further editing.

Size of iPhoto Library

Hi, where can I idnetify the size of the iPhoto Library?

Is there a maximum photo number for the iphoto library? I started having lots of issues when I reached the 20K range. I don't remember what the issues were, but I remember deleting 10K that I had backed up on disc, and continued backing up the other 10K.

My iPhoto library is growing out of proportion to it's content. The iPhoto library file is now 27GB. When I go in and do a show package content I see the following folder sizes:
Data 649MB
iPod Photo Cache 15.79GB
Modified 267MB
Originals 7.1GB
Do you see this!
The iPod Photo Cache is TWO times the size of the Originals. How can that be????
Why would this be larger anyway. I thought pictures are getting scaled down to fit on the iPod.
Has anybody any idea how I can reduce the size of this iPod Cache?

Normally, I would advise against changing things in the iPhoto Library Folder but make a back up - just in case - and you can safely trash that iPod Photo Cache. The worst that will happen is that iPhoto will create a new one next time you sync. When it does, compare the size with this one.

Summary:
I have started a new library, with the birth of my son, 7 months ago.
I was going to move it and realized : 15Gb, with 5Gb in the "modified" folder.
After looking around here, I found the reason.
And now, the auto-rotate is turned off on my cameras. (and I will try your Xee, to rotate before importing to iPhoto)
Now, my question:
What can I do, with my existing library?
Is there a way to reduce it? to get rid of all the rotated pictures? (could I delete the one in Original folder?
Only solution is to reimport all, in a new library ? (I can't imagine doing again all the events... even if it's only 7 months worth of pictures...)

I don't know of any software to remove that tag. If you did and imported the files they would be displayed in the landscape orientation which is not how they were taken. So if you wanted to view them correctly you'd have to rotate them from within iPhoto thus creating a modified version and be back from where you started.
Your best bet would be to go thru the photos using Quicklook to find those portrait oriented photos and use Xee to rotate before importing.
Or use a different DAM (digital asset management) application that can handle those types of files without creating modified versions. I use Expression Media which lets me rotate the files from inside the application without creating modified files.

Can aperture reduce my iPhoto library size?

Hi, I have spent hours reading lots of discussions and whilst, maype part of my questions have possibly been answered somewhere else, I cannot get a definitive answer to everything I need to know. I undrestand that aperture is different to iphoto, but I am confused by some of the answers regarding libraries that I have read! Any opinions or answers are gratefully received...

My current photo library is nearly 120GB and I want to get some space back! I have external drives that I could move my iphoto library onto, but I want to keep my photos (well, certainly half of it) on the internal drive as I work away from plug sockets often and my 3TB drive needs power.

It uses the same Library format as iPhoto, so no, it doesn't organise the library differently. It gives no thought to saving space. Digital photography with a non-destructive workflow uses a lot of space. iPhoto makes no duplicates. It has a preview of an edited version. One thing that Aperture can do is not generate the preview. But that means no integration with other apps, and you'll need to export the shot everytime you want to email or use an image in a document etc.
Frankly, I don't think that space would be a reason to migrate to Aperture.

Split the Library. It's cheaper:
Make sure the external drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
Now you have two full versions of the Library.
3. On the Internal library, trash the Events you don't want there
Now you have a full copy of the Library on the External and a smaller subset on the Internal
Some Notes:
As a general rule: when deleting photos do them in batches of about 100 at a time. iPhoto can baulk at trashing large numbers at one go.
You can choose which Library to open: Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
You can keep the Library on the external updated with new imports using iPhoto Library Manager

See above. I don't think you need Aperture. iPhoto can have the same number of Libraries as Aperture - i.e as many as you want.

Yes you can, but you might want to ask yourself why you're using a non-destructive workflow at all, if you're going to that bother to try and defeat it?
IMHO: there are many excellent reasons for moving on from iPhoto to Aperture - and they are all to do with the limited nature of iPhoto's tools. You mention one of them. I think that the suggestion I have above is the way to go forward, with multiple libraries.

How long to import an iPhoto Library? What settings....? Arrrrgh!!

I have now been importing (leaving images in the iPhoto Library) for over 4 hours now.
My iPhoto Lib is 240Gb with 45k photos and an hour or so of Video. I am running an iMac i7 with latest OSx and 4 Gb RAM
Aperture is 'grinding' away and has consumed the available RAM and a lot of the processor.
With this process running the system is almost unusable and at times freezes. I have found that Time Machine (which kicks in every hour) causes a massive lock where the two processes seem to be competing over the same patch of land... Turning this off has helped.
Initially I tried an import "to 'Pictures' " which I left running overnight, however the system settings sent the machine to sleep before it was finished and I had to force quit on resuming this morning. I then tried to 'resume' the import selecting "No Duplicates" however the import was starting from scratch again. This may have only been events/projects but it was simply taking for ever.
An initial import of a folder from "iPhoto Browser" view did not pull through the GPS or faces or other project data - so I decided a full import was required.
My end goal is to work out the best setup of the different import options for me.
What's better and what are the pro's 'n' con's of loading images into the Aperture Library or leaving in the iPhoto Lib? What about in folders in 'My Pictures"?
After reading through some of these forums I have noted that there are a few of the "consumer" functions which Aperture does not have I will still want to use the card/calendar features of iPhoto - what might be the best setup for me?
It's a bit confusing when looking to transition from iPhoto...... I've tried reading through the support pages and watched the How To vids - but I cannot find a Why do it this way or that way....?

So - after a lot of playing around this is what I have sorted out.
Aperture is pretty awsome
Cannot possibly go back to iPhoto now....
....but will still need iPhoto for some of the 'Grandparent' stuff like cards and calendars!
On the setup/installation side when importing from iPhoto, depending on library size - expect this to take a significant amount of time.
Turn off TimeMachine
Disable 'sleep' in Energy Saver
Set import up and let it run overnight!
I have imported my entire iPhoto library both into Aperture and 'in place' to see what is the best way to make it work/run and performance etc.
Thinking that I would not want to duplicate a massive library file - I wanted to see if there was any performance or other like issues with either method, and if there was any siginificant space savings of doing either.
Here are some stats:
On file sizes:
iPhoto Library 230.36 GB
Aperture 'Leave in current location' Library 26.48 GB
Aperture 'In Aperture' Library 216.27 GB
On Time to import:
Aperture 'Leave in current location' Library 8+ hours (this was before i worked out to turn off timemachine)
Aperture 'In Aperture' Library - overnight..? It just worked this time!
On Opening Aperture: Average time taken until application is fully responsive
Aperture 'Leave in current location' Library -> 2m:35s
Aperture 'In Aperture' Library -> 1m:16s
On Exit with Update to previews: (obviously this has a lot to do with changes in your library)
Aperture 'Leave in current location' Library -> 7m:40s !!!!!
Aperture 'In Aperture' Library -> 2m
Using Aperture
I could not find much difference in creating slide shows, editing images or working with faces/locations etc once Aperture was loaded with either library. The big difference seems to be in the post processing of libraries once imported. With the 'In location' library this seemed to take 'days' as each time I opened this library I had massive lags and delays and became frustrated so went back to the 'In Aperture" library.
Now this processing is complete I also find the Application is running well and not completly hogging all the RAM/Processor available. I am now comfortably able to run Aperture, Web browser and another profile on the iMac without too many performance issues!
Still looking at how 'going back to iPhoto' using the Aperture library combinations might work - aaarrrrggggh - can I really be bothered ????
Summary
For me I am going to use the In Aperture setup. Performance is greater and the library size is smaller.
If looking to import a large iPhoto Library I suggest:
Turn off all background and other programs which could steal any processing power/RAM
Run it overnight
Import with the 'In Aperture' option
Be prepared for the 'post processing' and allow this to complete before you become concerned bout the performance

IPhoto library empty after upgrading to iPhoto 9.6

I have noticed this problem mentioned by others numerous times with no solution that has worked for me. Has a better fix been found other than recopying all of the files in the 'old masters' list into a new library, effectively losing previously created albums, etc.? Is anyone at Apple actually working this issue since it seems to be pretty widespread and apparently directly related to a bug in iPhoto 9.6?.
OK, first, i have no back up iPhoto library. I had one previously but my secondary external drive got full and I had to wipe it to rearrange a bunch of data. Had planned on re-backing it up when I opened iPhoto and uploaded some new photos from my phone, but this event happened and now I am out of luck...
My iPhoto library is stored on an external drive (Wester Digital my Passport for Mac) and has worked fine until yesterday when I plugged my iPhone 6+ in to upload photos and sync with iTunes. Upon booting up iPhoto, I got a notification that I needed to upgrade my library. I clicked on the upgrade function and was then notified that a mistake was found and a repair was necessary. The repair was ongoing when iPhoto froze and entire system failed, giving note that startup disk was nearly full. After doing system restart and opening iPhoto, I found all photos gone from iPhoto window. iPhoto is using the correct library and after looking at all internal files in iPhoto library, I found all photos had been moved to "old masters, old thumbnails, old previews". Size of iPhoto library is still over 500 gigs, so data is there apparently. I immediately backed iPhoto library up, so at least this data has been salvaged, but I still can't access my photos. I have used iPhoto's rebuild functions sequentially all the way to full rebuild, with no photos being found. I then used iPhoto library manager app's rebuild function, and it also revealed no photos.
So, what can I do to sort this out? Needless to say, with 500+ gigs of photos, I am concerned. I am hesitant to do the manual rebuild using the 'old masters' option since I will lose all of my previously organized albums. Is waiting for Apple to issue a fix that will actually restore lost data only a dream or would that feasibly happen? Thanks in advance for any and all help that can be offered.

Here is the step by step method to recover your photos into a new Library....
Please read the warning below first.....
The current emergency only workaround fix for this issue when the user hasn't made or doesnt have access to any backups, is as follows....
Quit iPhoto
In Finder, Select iPhoto Library
Control Click on iPhoto Library and choose Show Package
Drag Masters or Old Masters folder to either desktop or external HD if not enough space on System Drive
Delete or preferably move iPhoto Library file to new location so at a later date one can recover the library again if needed..
Restart Mac
Launch iPhoto... (It should then create a new Library automatically...)
Drag and drop the Masters or Old Masters folder(s) onto iPhoto's icon... or use the menu option in iPhoto to import photos and point to the Masters or Old Masters folders saved out previously.
Be patient............
Photos will then be re-added to iPhoto... and added to the new library...
Note: If you have both Masters and Old Masters folders then add them one at a time, letting iPhoto import and index all the photos from one folder before adding another....
Important Warning!!!: All modifications and folder structures/albums from the original library will be lost.... but at least the original photos are rescued... and a new library is created that should be free of issues with the current iPhoto/Yosemite combination.
