Size of PDF grows after saving in Preview

Greetings,
At my work we have a photocopier that also has a scanning feature that emails the scanned document to me as a PDF.
I frequently have to make minor edits to the PDFs in Preview--like flip them 180 degrees, delete blank pages, etc.
I've noticed that most of these documents are 2.2 to 2.3MB in size when I first receive them. After I edit and save them in Preview, they jump up to 3.6 to 3.8MB. Why are they growing when, if anything, they should stay the same or decrease in size???
TIA.

I'm not sure what exactly is going on, but many apps avoid re-writing the whole file by appending your changes and leaving it at that, if the file format supports it. So instead of saving a new PDF with pages removed, for instance, it is possible (again I'm not sure) that what Preview is doing is marking the pages deleted but not actually deleting them. So instead of "document - pages = smaller file" you may be getting "document + instructions to ignore pages that are not really deleted = larger file."
Are you simply doing a Save after your edits? If so, try doing a Save As to a new name. In many apps, this will write out a whole new file that's smaller because all unneeded data is finally thrown out.
Another example of this is Microsoft Word's "Allow Fast Saves" feature; if it is on, changes (even deletions) are appended as additional instructions that only make the file grow. To set everything straight you would have to Save As a new name.
It is also possible that Preview is using different, less compact PDF compression than the app that saved it before.
If your office has a Mac copy of Acrobat Pro, it might be worth seeing if it saves smaller PDF files since it does not handle files exactly the same way Preview does.

  • Image size isn't maintained after saving

I'm having some real issues here, I'm trying to send some photography work to print. I'm making the image size for the full print size, put my photograph in there and resize it to printer specifications. Crop the remainder of the image. After I save it as a new jpg and I open that jpg, it's right back to the original image size... it's not maintaing the measurements I specified. I've never had this issue until I got CS5, is there some new feature I'm totally missing here or what?

If the pixel dimensions before and after saving don't change, you're looking at perfectly normal, expected behavior.
You were told that in post #1:
Is the number of pixels changing, or just the resolution?
If the latter, the print resolution is not saved in JPEG files.
I repeat:  the print resolution is NOT saved in JPEG files.
It does not behoove me to inquire into why someone who "thinks in print terms" is dealing with JPEGs in the first place.

  • Setting page size of PDF converted from .ps by Preview

I'm trying to generate an A4 PDF from an A4 .ps file, but Preview changes the page dimensions to 8.5"x11". I'm assuming/hoping there must be some way of setting the default page size, but I can't find it in Preview's preferences, or in the printing section of System Preferences.
    Some background, if it matters:
The .ps was generated by Inkscape, which isn't aware of the OS X printing services, but does allow PostScript output to a file. The bounding box defined at the top of the .ps is A4 proportioned (596:842 = 1:1.414), but I don't know what the units are.

    Hi Lynne,
I can't remember if any of the defaults changed in Acrobat v.9 (it's at v.XI now). However, the options in the Acrobat Print settings are "sticky", so perhaps it was set for one job and not noticed when yours was run.

  • HT2506 Problem with highlighting - scrambles PDF text after saving

    Hi,
I've been having an issue with a PDF which becomes partly scrambled after I edit it (highlighting) and save it. I have tried to find information about this problem but haven't come across anything similar (please redirect me if I am wrong).
The 'scrambled' text is actually a bunch of numbers and symbols.
For ex, the text 'Whether the supervisor is contactable to be able to re-arrange the meeting' now shows up as this:
It seems this is only a display problem as when I select this section and copy paste it elsewhere, it then shows up normallly.
Not all the text is scrambled. It seems to be mainly headings, which all happen to be in bold.
Does anyone know how to stop this from happening?
    Cheers.

Does this happen with all PDF's, or only one? If only one, the file is corrupt.

  • Cannot print to PDF file after saving it to JPEG

I get the following error when I try to print to a .pdf file that I just saved to a .jpeg.
"Adobe PDF" cannot access the file because it is in use by another applicaiton or process:
    C:\Users\<username>\Desktop\junk.pdf
Verify that the file is not open by another application or process and try again.
I am using Acrobat X Pro on x64 Win 7.
Here are the steps I take to produce this error:
    1.  Print any file to the "Adobe PDF" printer
    2.  Save that .pdf file as a .jpeg
    3.  Close JUST that particular .pdf file while leaving Acrobat X up (clicking the small black x on the top right).
    4.  Try to print any other file to "Adobe PDF" with the same name as the .pdf file I just closed.
I do not get the error if I do not save to .jpeg, or when I close Acrobat X completely, but the user who is complaining about this error keeps multiple .pdf files open and doesn't want to have to close Acrobat X out completely every time.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance!

Thanks Pat.  Tried each, restarted computer each time; tried the "Accept" routine several days ago - it worked briefly and then stopped.  Uninstalled Reader and Flash as well.  Strange thing with Flash, one of my online broker programs provides streaming of CNBC.  When I clicked on the CNBC option to initiate CNBC, I got a message saying that I needed to load Flash.  I did, and it loaded again with no mention of Flash having already been installed.
Using Internet Explorer works, as well as, clicking on the .pdf file within Windows Explorer (WE).  Expanding the window in WE makes it large enough to read.  I would still like to find a way to open the files as they are designed to open.
I have done all of the Adobe updates as they have been presented.  Microsoft updates load automatically, and restart my computer in the process.  I do not look to see what the updates have been.  I figure if there was not a need, Microsoft would not make the updates.

  • Problem with PDF file after saving from MS Word

When I have an image in MS Word and I save to PDF, the page with the image becomes black as you can see the text at the bottom is black instead of white.  Also, I have Replace Document Colors active to invert the PDF color.  Anyone know why inserting an image messes with the text this way?

Not sure, but it may deal with transparencies if those were used.

  • Disappearing PDF file after saving work in Acrobat Pro 9?

I use Acrobat Pro 9 to do markups. Some of the files may be as large as 2,000 pages. At various points, I save my work. Sometimes, however, I save my work, close the program. I come back later and discover that the PDF file that I working seems to have vanished. It's not in Recyle Bin and searching for it, does not bring it up. There isn't even an icon. When this happens, all that remains are aabxxx 's in Recent Places. Sometimes if I am lucky, I can somehow generate another PDF file. Sometimes not.
I know that it is possible I could strike the wrong key and not save my work. But this has happened often where that something else be the reason.. I have looked for solutions to this problem in the past and have not been able to find any.  I currently am using Windows 7 with IE9
    Any ideas? Thanks.

Thank you for your help and suggestions. I put in the browser info, but I wasn't sure if that would be helpful. I have a lot of problems with IE9 and using Microsoft Word and Excel.. MS Office 2010 is 64-bit.  The version of Windows 7 I have is 64-bit. What happened is that I began working for this one publisher, AA9 was the version in use and that was I was instructed to use It was also just before the release of AAX.
Do you think that the 32-bit/64-bit difference is what could be causing the issue?
I put off going to a new version because of the cost and the fact that I wouldn't have time to learn the current version. I have a lot of projects right now and scheduling is tight.

  • Adobe Reader X change the PDF version after saved

    Hi all,
I recently discovered a weird behavior of Adobe Reader X (free version) regarding the .PDF version document.
I scanned just before the week-end a series of documents with default 1.4 version, I checked several and all were ok, Scanner did the job well.
The only problem is that every time I opened a document and save it under a different name, or replace under the same name – Save As option (Shift+Ctrl+S); the version of the document is automatically changed from 1.4 to 1.5; This is very annoying since I do not need 1.5 document version I use only 1.4.
Is there a way to work around this? I mean the Adobe Reader X should not keep the version 1.4 and not change it to 1.5
Thanks is advance for looking into this

  • Form content disapears after saving

I have been able to do this in the past but for some reason can not get this to work now. I am trying to pt a signature on a IRS form after I have filled in all the fields. In the past I simply saved the form with a different name, say for exapmle, IRSxxx.-signed.pdf. Opened the new form in Apples PREVIEW program that comes with all macs. Within this program I have a hand written signature that allows me to place anywhere on any document. So I place my signature on the signature line on the PDF and save the form. When I open the form, the signature is there, but all the fields are blank.
So I gave up on this method and then just printed out the last page of the PDF, signed it, photographed it with my cameraphone, then tried to place an extra page in the PDF using the photograph of the signed page to add to the PDF. Again, when I go to open the newly created PDF document after saving it, the image of the signed page is there but all the field again are blank. How the heck can I say PDF without deleting all the fields. This is most frustrating.
I am using Acrobat 11.0.4 on an iMac running Lion 10.8.5
    Many thanks,
    Houston

Or to use acrobat instead and save or signature as a Stamp and you the stamp to to  place it where you want.
What I would do instead is:
leave the signature line when creating the PDF (In Acrobat)
    Remove the Signature Field
Then fill out for and print it.
Then put your signature by hand, in signature Box.
    Then mail it to them.
OR if they allow digital signing in the Signature Field place a Digital Signature.
You'll have to contact the IRS and see if the allow digital signatures.
I expect not. With all the stealing passwords and such going on today. They probably will not because The digital signature  coud be broken into and Faked.
And the only way I would email it if they allow is use VPN Connection to do so.

  • Can't search for words anymore after saving PDFs in Preview

    Hi everyone,
I would love to use Preview for my day-to-day use of previewing PDFs + highlighting + setting annotations. However, once I have saved the pdf with Preview I can not search for words anymore. If I search for one letter only, I would get cryptic hits like "7;%! 2%8%P%8!".
I am not sure, but I guess when preview saves the pdf using a Quartz PDF context, something happens with the index, or the underlying the font structuring.
Does anyone have had experience with these kinds of troubles?
    Thanks in advance,
    Heinrich

Hi, thanks for answering quickly, and the heads up on that other thread.
It undoubtedly has to do with the annotations or mark ups (the last, in my case).
In the linked-to thread they end by suggesting that it's because it's has "commenting not allowed" when you see it
using Adobe Reader, File > Properties > Security says Commenting: Not Allowed.
However, some documents with "commenting not allowed set in Adobe Reader I can highlight or annotate fine, without it messing up after saving.
Besides, any document I save as pdf even from Word, will say commenting not allowed in Adobe Reader. So if even my own documents are not highlight- or annotate-able without garbling the text, what documents would these functions be for, then?
I think what somebody mentioned in the other thread about character encodings hold some truth, I see it in documents in Danish with æ ø and å (however, not all!), but not in English-only docs (yet. Have any of you?).
    Thanks in advance,
    - Alexander

  • PDF file size increases several folds after OCR

    Hello,
I've been using Acrobat Pro 9.  Whenever I receive a scanned PDF from someone, I always try to OCR it.  I thought this would reduce the file size because it's saved as text characters instead of images.  However, the file size actually increases several folds.  For example I just had a scanned PDF with original size of 3M, but after OCR (settings:  searchable image, downsample to 300dpi), the file size is > 19M.  This is a legal document with no pictures or diagrams.  Even ClearScan gives a result of 15M file.  Could you help explain why and how I can change this?  Thank you.
    Hung

I just did an OCR with Searchable Image (exact); and here are all results
    Original:  3,046 KB
    Searchable Image (300dpi):  19,408 KB
Searchable Image (Exact) (600dpi):  3,377 KB
    ClearScan (300dpi):  14,813 KB
So in this example, Searchable Image (exact) only causes about 10% increase in size.  I used Save As "PDF" (not "Reduced Size PDF" or "Optimized PDF"...).  Does this make sense?  Thank you.

  • Bug Report:  "View PDF After Saving" Does Not Work When Saving as Photoshop PDF

The saved PDF file is not opening in Acrobat after saving a file as a Photoshop PDF. I noticed it happening a few times in earlier beta testing, but today it happened again.
I have Adobe Acrobat Pro 10.1.2 installed on MacPro with Lion OS 10.7.3. Photoshop public beta m415.  System info can be provided if needed.
The file I was trying to save was about 8 MB. Once it failed to open after save, I tried varied PDF settings and save locations. Also tried several different files. All were saved properly as PDF files, but would not continue to open in Acrobat as previous versions have done. The files open properly when you click on the file names in saved location.

I'm happy I could help and feel a bit proud to have found a real bug. The simplest work around is just clicking on the file list once it's done...that's certainly not a problem.
