Size of photo to import

I need to create a document in Photoshop that I can import into FCE. My project is in 16x9 format. What size (inch x inch) should I make my document so that nothing will be cutoff, and it wont need to be stretched or anything that will cause pixelation or any loss of quality. Thanks

  • Optimal size of photos to import into T3

If I use 2x3 x 75 DPI the picture does not take up the whole screen. If I use an 8x10 it takes up too much memory and is slow. There must be an optimal size.
    Thanks,

    Hello!
The Tungsten T3 has a 320x480 res LCD screen so optional resolution is 320x480, this does equate to a 2/3-3/2 aspect ratio.  The 2x3 x75dpi aspect yields 150x225 resolution thus too small and 8x10 x75dpi aspect yeilds 600x750 resolution which is too big for the screen to fit.  Using mspaint should give you the ability to set the resolution for both x and y axis or if you are using a more complex app use the 2/3 ratio with 120-150 DPI setting.

How do I reduce the size of photo in iPhoto?  The size of my imported photos from my camera are 2 - 3 MB and for my purpose I need 200 - 400 KB.   Scanned copies of older photographs with a size of 100 to 500 KB work very well.  Any help is greatly appreciated.

File -> Export and make your choices in the Export dialogue.
Jpeg Quality and Size will have most effect on file size. Note that 'Size' refers to the pixel dimensions of the photo.

Digital files don't have sizes in centimeters or inches, meters or yards. They have only pixels. If LR is not changing the number of pixels, it is not changing the digital image. When the image is printed, the number of pixels packed into every inch has a large effect on the quality of the print. This is the pixels per inch number, or "ppi". For a smooth print paper it is generally accepted that 300 ppi produces optimum quality, but for canvas a lower ppi, as low as 150 even, will do. Unfortunately, your camera puts a tag on the digital file which sets a default ppi of only 72. The reason is very anachronistic and silly and is a hangover from 30 years ago when Apple monitors had a resolution of 72 dpi, a measure long ago abandoned. That tag is misleading because it gives the impression that a very large print can be made from the pixels just as they come from the camera (the smaller the ppi, the larger the print) and some beginners think that is the only size print that can be made. But that not true. It is only a default tag, a suggestion, and it can be disregarded or changed (LR changes it to 240 ppi) and any sized print made. The real, operative, ppi will be the pixel dimensions divided by the print dimensions. Your image with all its pixels (uncropped other than to the 1:1.4 paper ratio) will have an operative 93 ppi on b0 paper which is a bit low. I would suggest using LR's resize function to double it to 7296 pixels on the short side.

See this article: iPad: Using the iPad Camera Connection Kit
No, this canot be done, afaik. When your camera or card is connected, you will see the thumbnails in the camera pane, but not full size preview. So to browse your photos on the iPad you will need to import them to your camera roll. But you need not delete them from the camera or card after importing, so you might simply import selected photos to your camera roll from the camera grid and then delete them again from the camera roll after importing and browsing, without removing them from the card/camera.

  • Is there a maximum size for photos used in a slideshow? I cannot anymore put my slideshow into a wmv

Is there a maximum size for photos imported in a slideshow ? I cannot anymore put my slide show into a wmv file.

About CLOB size, it's 4Go not 4000 characters - VARCHAR2 supports up to 4000 bytes. Pay attention also to unicode encoding!
Are you using CFQUERYPARAM to insert into the CLOB fields ?
         <CFQUERYPARAM CFSQLTYPE="CF_SQL_CLOB" VALUE="    ">

  • Photos copies photos when importing even when told not to copy photos when importing?

The new Photos app is pretty cool.
The one thing I didn't like about iPhotos is still present here:  Rather than handling my photos in the Finder it creates a weird database full of all the photos -- and the only way to get to them is via this one app.  I guess maybe we'll have a solution for that in the future.
But I have stumbled across something that may be a deal breaker for me:  Even when set to not COPY imported photos, it turns out the Photos copies imported photos.
In preferences:  GENERAL -> IMPORTING you can choose whether to Copy Items To The Photo Library.
Well, I don't want to do that.  I have 8G of photos on my drive, and relatively little space, and the last thing I need to do is use double the space!  So I chose not to copy items when importing.
I come back a couple hours later.  And guess what?  My Photos app/library is 8G in size!  Photos has copied all my photos when importing.   So now I have two copies of all my photos on my hard drive, and I am running out of space.
Is there a way to make that setting, to not copy photos when importing, work?

    Hi,
Thanks for the idea.  Here is what I found:
The "Masters" folder is very small.  300MB.
The "Previews" folder is a similar size.
    "Thumbnails" are under 1G.
It's the "Resources" folder that is many gigs in size.
Very interesting.  So in a sense, it could be even worse!
That is, apparently the setting prevented the "Masters" folder from getting 8 gig of photos copied into it.
But even so, "Resources" ended up with 6.5G in it -- even though no files were copied!
    Wild.
Other photo management apps (e.g., Lightroom) have sort of a 10% overhead, not a 90% overhead -- i.e., close to the same size as the actual photos themselves.
I should probably start a fresh question, now that you have solved half the mystery:  Yes, the actual photos were not imported into Masters, but Resources gets really big!

  • Recommended size of photos

Just started using iM 8 on my 1.8 Dual G5 (Yes, it installed and works although it appears a little slowly)! Question: What is the size that photos need to be to insure they will import and display properly? I dragged a couple of photos from an external file and one showed perfectly and another was black. I resized them to 640x480 and no problems but is there a specific max?

Question: What is the size that photos need to be to insure they will import and display properly?
Not sure if there is a limit on the source photo but photo resources stored in the "Project" package are scaled. However, specific storage does seem to be somewhat contextual. For example, all of my source photos are 3008 x 2000 and my tests have been in the widescreen (16:9) mode. In one of my projects all of the photos were scaled and stored at 1624 x 1080 while in the other they were scaled and stored at 718 x 1080. First photo added to the project may determine how all other photos will be stored. In the case of the first project, the first photo was in a landscape orientation while in the second the first photo was in the portrait orientation. In addition, while all photos for my second project were stored in a "portrait" orientation, they were not stored using a "preserve aspect ratio" algorithm -- i.e., landscape photos were stored "squished" horizontally but were correctly displayed in the project and final output. Would, therefore conclude that the scaling algorithm may be based on the height of the first original photo added to/kept in a project and the aspect ratio of the project itself. Believe it might be interesting if you were to post back with comparison notes regarding the scaling and storage of your photos -- i.e., for both the original and the 640 x 480 cropped photos.
I dragged a couple of photos from an external file and one showed perfectly and another was black.
For the moment would assume the "black" display problem may have been due to the scaling and/or file format. Mine were all JPEG files. What were the dimensions and file compression format for your photos?

  • Ideal file size for photos

If I am making photo albums in iWeb, what is the ideal file size for the photo file?
My camera now is 7 megapixel, so the original file sizes are about 3 MB, obviously that'll be very slow to load.
To what file size should I save it to make it load at a reasonable speed and still have a reasonable quality? 500 KB? 200 KB?
In case this is a factor, the typical album I make would have about 40 - 50 photos.
Also, what are the best ways to batch converts -- making a group of photos 500 KB instead of 3 MB? I know a few time-consuming ways (ie. individually resaving the files) or using a thumbnail-making program (have used a program called Thumbs Up).
    Any other suggestions? Thanks.

If you are importing your photos directly from iPhoto to iWeb, they will be scaled down to a max dimension of 800x600. If you are using a photo template page or making a gallery page using the following method...
    http://www.mac.com/web/en/Blog/013C4180-4787-4847-BAAB-319222AFC652.html
...iWeb will also make your thumbnails for you automatically.
For all your other freeform pages that you might make, it is always a good idea to size your photos down to their usage size. A good rule of thumb is to consider the width of your page, which by default is 700px. Then divide it out by how many photos across you expect to have roughly. So 3 photos across 700 pixels means that the photos should be scaled to roughly 233 pixels wide maximum. Just a rough approximation is fine.
The reason I recommend doing this is that if you drop in a 2500 pixel wide image into iWeb directly, and you only plan on using it as a 233 pixel wide image on the page... iWeb will do a fine job of scaling the photo down to size BUT it will also save the full resolution photo as part of your web page....not to use, but just for safe keeping. And if you ever discover the RSS feed on your website, you will see that iWeb makes all of these high resolution photos available for download, too! So beware if you value your original work! Don't feed them directly to iWeb.

  • Wrong photo will import from iPhoto window

During the normal course of editing, all of the photos that were in the movie were overprinted with a random movie clip still. The thumbnails in the project window still show the intended photo, but only the new clip still will show during playback. By right-clicking the photo and doing "Show in Finder", the correct .jpg file is referenced. When I try to drag the correct photo back in from the photo media window, a photo will be brought in, but it will be one that appears a few spots away in the list from the intended one. The thumbnail remains the correct photo. I believe something has become corrupted in my iMovie project that will not show the correct photo, even though the program is internally pointing to the correct photo. Very frustrating, as I have lost many days of careful editing. Made a copy of the project and have tried many things, to no avail.
Anyone have an idea? Is there a parameter file or something that I can delete that will reset things? Thanks very much.

The distortion/blurriness may arise due to the size of the photo being imported from iPhoto.
iMovie HD 6 appears to have problems handling very large photos - these should be resized (not cropped) in iPhoto before being imported to iMovie HD. The process is described in this post by Karl Petersen on 14/04/2007:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=4389924#4389924
Karl describes the process very thoroughly (as always) in Point 3 of his post.
Doing as Karl suggests may not, of course, help in your particular case but it's certainly worth a try.

  • No Photos to Import

    G5 PPC, OS 10.4.1.1, 8GB RAM, CS3
Images in HD folder can be opened in PS; when trying to Import into LR 2.3, get error "No photos to Import".
In Import dialog, most, but not all, photos grayed out.  The images are definitely there!!

Yes, but they're in different folders. They're readily found----I sell my images, and this particular folder is a group of 24" images.  The images can be found in other folders on my HD that contain different sizes of duplicates, up to 65".  Many of the images are scattered around LR, and that's why I want to consolidate them by size in folders.
Would your question indicate images can't be duplicated anywhere in LR?

  • Can not find out how to set size of photos

    Hi
I have iPad 1 and iPad 3 and iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S and ATV
bur I can not set the proper size for photos.
My TV-set is of course 16:9 and ATV sends photos OK to screen
but I have to resize them in iPhoto or PhotoShop.
I have also an 6 year old Canon camera and there is the possibility to take 16:9 photos (still) direct
Anyone know how to set iPhone to shoot 16:9 stills.
I do not belive Apple have missed something important as this.
    Everyone must have a 16:9 TV-set today.
Perhaps anyone know about an app as does this?

  • CS4 Photo Downloader imports photos in wrong order

I decided to give Photo Downloader a whirl with a batch of photos I took this weekend. I had about 400 photos spread over three cards, so I had them renamed with the date and a counter. I was using the high-speed drive mode on my camera (5Dmk2) and I noticed in one spot where I blew off a run of photos, Bridge imported them in some order other than the filename counter in the camera.
I was looking at about a half-dozen shots of someone shooting a basketball and noticed that it looked like the ball came out and then was shot again, something that didn't happen in the game. Fortunately, I had Bridge embed the original filename from the camera into the XMP data and sure enough, Photo Downloader screwed up the order of the photos.
How does Photo Downloader determine the proper order to download photos? There are no options to change the import order and the software clearly doesn't just read the filenames to get it sorted out.
Any ideas? Or just stop using Photo Downloader? Or do I have to download the files, then rename then in filename order in Bridge?

It is a known issue that Photodownloader can't get this sort order right every time, the higher frequency of motordrive used the more it will screw up.
However when you don't use the rename function in downloader it will be more accurate. Feel also free to file a bug report about this using the contact button top right of this page, the more complaints the faster it will be repaired you would hope...).
I rarely have sessions with that high speed but it occurred to me also and using no rename did suit me :-)
You can then easily rename them in Bridge (also with more options) but it would be preferable that it worked right in downloader!
The ups for using downloader are still great, without this rename setting for speedy jobs you are still left with the possibility to keep the original filename (and disable that in the Bridge batch renaming option), convert to DNG, make a back up copy and add a metadata template in one go :-)

  • How do I reduce the size of photos to use on website?

Thanks to the helpful person who recommended I use Rapidweaver to build a website, I am slowly getting somewhere. It is so simple and just like Apple applications that I think I can do this.
My problem now is that when I tried to transfer a photo from iPhoto to the draft website page it comes across so large it fills the page.
How do I reduce the size of photos so that I can bring them across? I need to show about 20 photos on the web pages. Do they need to be in a different format and if so how do I change it to the appropriate one?
    Many thanks.

    Hi Casuarina,
Go to this site and click on the Desktop Version Quicktime movie for a small tutorial. It will explain everything to you and you can see how you resize right within Rapid Weaver. It's really quite nifty.

  • I suddenly cannot email photos from iphoto. I get a box that says "server does not recognize username or password". I now have to use regular email and cannot re-size my photos.

Suddenly I can no longer email photos directly via iphoto mail.  The box comes up that says "server does not recognize username or password".  I used to be able to re-size my photos before sending so that they jpeg or pixels were larger for publishing in newspapers or magazines, but I can no longer do that.  Apple tech support told me to change my iphoto "preferences" to using regular email to send.  But that does not allow me to re-size.  Is anyone else having this problem?  I don't know if there was an update that caused this or what?  Please help.

The box comes up that says "server does not recognize username or password".
That error message usually will pop up, when there is a conflict between the "From" setting for the mail account you are sending from and the selected outgoing mail server. Probably the outgoing Mail server is receiving a user name and password it does not understand. When the mail returns unsent, do you see the "Try again" panel with the option to select a different outgoing mail server?
If you do not see this panel, change the Mail "Preferences > General" to "If Outgoing server is unavailable: Show a list of alternate servers". This way, you will know, which server Mail is trying to send from.
Have you tried to set "From"  pop-up menu to one of your other email addresses?  If that works, change your settings in Mail to always send from this address. You can set this option in the Mail "Preferences > Composing: Send New Messages from". I have my "Send New Messages from" set to "iCloud". That is working best for me with iPhoto.
