Size/Resolution of PDF Created by Illustrator?

Hi, I'm trying to figure out how Illustrator determines the resolution of a PDF file when using the 'Save As' command.
Here's what we're trying to do. We've created some web site concepts for a client and want to show them a PDF. But it's important that they see the comps at "100%" of size, or screen resolution, so that they can tell the real size of the type and other elements.
Currently, the Illustrator document is setup using pixels as measurement. And when viewed at 100%, everything is proper relative to how it would look in a web browser. But when we save as a PDF and open in Acrobat, viewing at 100% is too big. Just by eyeballing it, it looks like it needs to be viewed in Acrobat at 75% to be correct. But this is probably just on my screen with it's resolution. Not sure if this would translate to client (probably on PC).
- Any ideas???
I almost considered creating JPEGs and putting on a web server, but then all the type is rasterized and looks horrible. I'm open to other suggestions.
THANKS!

But since the purpose is to simulate the image at 100% on screen, the rasterization of the text makes no difference. You could use an effect to rasterize the text with aliasing before saving the PNG. But for what purpose? Any browser in use today antialiases text anyway.

  • How do I save a 2 page pdf (created in Illustrator) to be used in a web site?

    How do I save a 2 page pdf (created in Illustrator) to be used in a web site?
    When I save my Illustrator file as a pdf, it is about 2600 kb, my web site admin will only allow storage of 5000 kb. I tried to "save for the web", but that only saves the first page of my document. Any suggestions other than paying for more storage???

    What pdf preset are you using? Try smallest file size rather than illustrator default.
    Save for web does not do PDF, so no multipage.

  • PDF created in Illustrator CS5 causing problems in InDesign CS5

    I have created a wallpaper / background in Illustrator CS5 that measures 646mm x 303mm (it's for an A4 folder cover) is in CMYK colour mode and is made up of only 2 layers.  Layer 1 is 3 rectangles - 1 the size of the page and 2 that are 50% of the full page.  They are all filled in with a gradient.  Layer 2 is 2 x waves made up os 2 lines then "Object", "Blend", "Specified Steps - 20", "Make".  This is the extent of the graphics on this page.  I have then saved it as a PDF (Illustrator Default) and it's size is 518k - pretty reasonable size.
    Here's my problem -  When I place the PDF in InDesign as the background for my folder it is slowing all my processes down is I put my view to "High Quality".  I can move, resize, type or place anything without the program crashing or a monumental delay in whatever it is that I am trying to do.  Printing is also taking an excessive amount of time when I try to print off the PDF (created from the InDesign file and being all of 1.2MB).
    Also - the illustrator document has now crashed once.
    Other things that might be useful to know is that I am running on Windows XP, Office 2010, 32 bit, and have the whole CS5 package.
    I can't think of any other information to give.
    Do you think there is a system problem?  File issue?  Any advice would be FANTASTIC.
    Thank you!!!!!

    That's an issue with the shared PDF stuff in newer versions of Acrobat. There's realy no fix for this misbehavior, it's more or less a "hard" compatibility issue.

  • Multiple page pdf created from illustrator - has white border on pages

    Hi - having trouble with a white border which appears around each page (have a colour background) in a multiple page pdf doc- created in illustrator (using page tiling) - anyone know the trick to get around this? Want the colour to go to the edges....see attached pdf

    I'm using CS4 but that's OK you can get it to work in CS2
    File: Print. Beside Media select Custom. Make the size really big. Then click done in lower right. Afterwards save your file.

  • Links to PDFs Created with Illustrator Won't Work

    I am using CS3. I create a document in Illustrator, save it as a PDF, and create a link to the PDF either through our website developer or through a newsletter program I am using. If I create the PDF using other programs (such as MSWord or Excel), the link works fine. If the original document is created using Illustrator and then saved as a PDF, the file will open directly as a PDF no problems. However, when I link to the PDF, the PDF downloads about 95% to 99% and then just stops on a blank page. Sometimes I get the message that the download is done; sometimes it just sits there at 95% downloaded and never progresses. Anyone else experience this?

    That's weird. Did you try and run the "Optimize" stuff in Acrobat? Perhaps it still has some references and fancies turned on that are unsuitable. Also there may be something up with your Internet Zoen surveillance and Illu simply not be an trusted app, so your PDFs are flagged as risky by the system...

  • User can't open a PDF created with Illustrator CS4

    I'm creating a PDF in Illustrator CS4, and I save it on a server where the user can get it. User is not able to open the file, it says acces denied. When I email that same file to several users, they can open it without a problem. I have checked that there's no restrictions on accessibility on the folder or the file. I wonder if it has to do with windows user permissions...
    Our IT guy couldn't find any problem ....
    Any clue?

  • Fixed layer in a pdf created by illustrator

    Hi guys,
    I'm an absolute beginner in illustrator and i have perhaps a trivial problem:
    I create a map of a region with different information each on an own layer and additional one layer with the legend, which should be visible all the time. After all I want to save this file as an PDF to make it available for my custumer.
    Now my problem, in this pdf-file it's possible to disable the legend layer and my customer has the possibility to print out my map without my copyright or logo.
    Is there any possibility to fix this layer in the pdf?
    I tried out, that it would be possible if I copy my logo into each layer, but that's just an agreement not the "perfect" solution.
    Thank you for every idea or hint!

    I was so curious and tried it:
    I think the best solution is the background solution with acrobat standard:
    - Save the legend layer in an own file (without all other layers) and then in an own pdf file without creating a layer (remove the check at the save option).
    - save the other layers in a second pdf file with the layer information and without the legend layer (delete it in the ai file before saving it as a pdf)
    and then combine the two pdf files as described there: http://www.adobe.com/designcenter/acrobat/articles/acr8at_background.html
    disadvantage:
    You need an additional programm and two files
    advantage:
    The illustrator file is "clean" and with no double information.
    a big thank you to Jacob Bugge for giving me the idea!

  • How can i plot a 600mm * 3200mm PDF created from Illustrator in perfect quality?

    Hi,
    I have this huge 600mm * 3200mm plan drawing, which i want to plot. I have importet Autocad .DWG files into illustrator and mingled with the lineweights and colores.  But, when i save it as a .PDF and send it through the plotter, it comes out all strange looking. The lines are brooken up and generally the plot is of very poor quality. If i create a A3 artboard in the same illustrator file, and print that, it comes out in perfect quality - very confusing. I have attached an image were you guys can see what im talking about. Has enyone ever encountered this problem?
    On the left you see what it looks like on the screen and on the right you see the plot.
    Regards Karl

    Karl,
    What happens if you plot the A3 PDF?

  • Trouble print on PDF created in Illustrator

    I have a problem I´ve created a 2 pages press release in Illustrator for web use, and save it to PDF. But in a moment my client print it, this show a paragraph in two differents colors, the first line print black 100% and second print in gray, this appear on all pagraphs of file. I made 2 days making test tosolve it but I dont find a solution.
    This a scan preview of failure.

    Hi to all, finally I´ve find a trouble, if you see the scaned file this correspond a printed file on printer without black ink, I see close this image and the first line is a black color more rich than anothers lines, to solve it I made a setup of all text on K100 color, and place it on top layer. finally this problem are fixed. thanks so much to Mylenium for your comment. • Hello.  May I ask:  I am using Acrobat 6.0.2, and having trouble formatting a PDF created from multiple (jpeg) files.  Each page is formatted to A4 size, portrait.  But when I create the PDF, each sheet appears as tiny, in the middle of a huge white page.

    Hello.  May I ask:  I am using Acrobat 6.0.2, and having trouble formatting a PDF created from multiple (jpeg) files.  Each page is formatted to A4 size, portrait.  But when I create the PDF, each sheet appears as tiny, in the middle of a huge white page.  I cannot seem to find any controls to adjust this.  Any advice appreciated.

    Thanks CtDave, for the further info.  Unfortunately, those suggestions are not working, which is strange.
    ....Until last week, I used to make multi-page PDFs straight from Photoshop: File > Automate > Make PDF.  One simply choses the files, orders them, and creates a PDF.  (Resolution doesn't matter; 300 DPI is no problem.)  However, my new Photoshop CS5 does not have the option in Automate.
    What I've done, seeing as Acrobat is letting me down, is use Bridge (new to me) to create the PDF.  It worked without a problem, but seems like more work than the old PS method.  I will download a newer version of Acrobat to see if that makes any difference.
    .....Also, thanks Test Screen Name:  I agree with you that jpeg is irrelevant, and that one can make a PDF from Photoshop (Print > Save As - pdf).  But that only works for SINGLE PAGE pdf, not multiple pages as far as I can tell.
    Kind regards,
    Prince Nuada

  • Why can't I reduce size of PDF created from multiple JPEGs?

    Hi,
    Using Adobe Acrobat Professional 8.0, I combined a bunch of JPEGs and turned them into a PDF. Because the resulting PDF was very large, I tried various Adobe tools to create a smaller version. However, nothing worked.
    Am I missing something? Or is it simply impossible to shrink the size of a PDF when it's created from JPEGs?
    Many thanks for your help.

    Unless you use size reduction on the images, you are not going to do much better than the JPegs themselves, that is unless the JPegs used no compression at all. There are limits to compression and you have probably reached it.
    Using Reduce File Size, you can usually reduce the size, but you will generally be reducing the resolution as well. If that is desired, you might find reducing the size of the graphics in a dedicated graphics package might be a better choice, followed by creating the PDF.

  • Is there a way to reduce the size of a final PDF created for print when saving a file?

    Is there a way to reduce the size of a final PDF created for print when saving in any software (especially illustrator)? I don't want any quality to decrease at the same time. Thanks!

    Personally I would avoid optimizing the PDF's via Adobe Acrobat Pro unless you understand what you are removing from the PDF; having said that, it is the most effective way to reduce the file-size in the right hands.
    If I am sending out layouts for commercial print I change my default Print / Export setting from Standard to PDF/A-1b:2005 (CMYK). This will resolve a lot of common print problems for print-ready documents and it should embed your fonts and flatten transparencies etc.
    If your document is still too large you run an Audit Space Usage using Adobe Acrobat Pro. In the left pane enable 'Content' and then hit the button in the top left corner of the Content Pane and choose Audit Space Usage.

  • How do I export from PDF to PPT so that shapes created in Illustrator are editable

    How do I export from PDF to PPT so that shapes created in Illustrator are editable, not just text on top of them? I used the Acrobat XL Pro technique described here (http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/pdf-to-powerpoint-pptx-converter.html), to export a graphic I had created in Illustrator and saved as an Adobe PDF file, but shapes are not editable and are fuzzy too. Is there a way to export a complete Illustrator graphic to PowerPoint?

    Thanks Bill. Of course I realize I can insert an Illustrator drawing into a PPT without making it a PDF first. What I’m trying to do is insert a drawing from Illustrator that is still editable in PPT (a client request). Using the Acrobat XL Pro capability shown in this video <http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/pdf-to-powerpoint-pptx-converter.html> , only the text is editable in PPT, not shapes created in Illustrator.

  • Problem with printing pdf file created from Illustrator

    Hello,
    In a drawing I created with Illustrator 10.0.3 I covered part of a circle with a white rectangle (to make it disappear). I saved it as pdf. When printing the pdf (under Linux with a HP printer), the covered part reappeared. However the pdf-file is how it should be. Anybody knows what the problem is?

    No, it is not set to overprint. Also, I have to add that the printing results were not consistent. Sometimes it covered and sometimes it did not.

  • Pdf created from FrameMaker book using FDK is of bigger size

    Hi,
    I am new to FrameMaker, when trying to generate a pdf document from a FrameMaker book using FDK, the size of the pdf file created is big when compared to the pdf created using “Save As PDF” from FrameMaker. I have tried setting Named Destinations to false and also “PDF Job Options” to “Smallest File Size”.
    Below is the code we use to create a pdf file using FDK
    //Open the frame book to process document by document
    bookId = OpenFile(strFile);
    /* Get docId in order to set Acrobat Bookmark levels */
    docId = F_ApiGetId(FV_SessionId, FV_SessionId, FP_FirstOpenDoc);
    F_ApiSetInt(FV_SessionId,bookId,FP_PDFBookmark,True);
    F_ApiSetInt(FV_SessionId,bookId,FP_PDFJobOption,6);
    /* Sets "Body" to the highest Acrobat Bookmark level. */
    pgfId = F_ApiGetNamedObject(docId, FO_PgfFmt, StringT("Body"));
    F_ApiSetInt(docId, pgfId, FP_AcrobatLevel, 1);
    F_ApiSimpleSave(docId, name, False);
    /* Sets the save parameters so as to save as PDF and allow user to name file.*/
    params = F_ApiGetSaveDefaultParams();
    i = F_ApiGetPropIndex(&params, FS_FileType);
    params.val[i].propVal.u.ival = FV_SaveFmtPdf;
    i = F_ApiGetPropIndex(&params, FP_PDFAllNamedDestinations);
    params.val[i].propVal.u.ival = (IntT)False;
    i = F_ApiGetPropIndex(&params, FP_PDFJobOption);
    params.val[i].propVal.u.sval = F_StrCopyString ((StringT)"Smallest File Size");
    /* Saves the book and all its components to one PDF file */
    int_SaveID = F_ApiSave(bookId, StringT(strTargetFile), &params, &returnParams);
    /* Close the open files.*/
    F_ApiDeallocatePropVals(&params);
    F_ApiDeallocatePropVals(returnParams);
    CloseFile(bookId);
    Can anyone suggest a way to reduce the size of the pdf file
    Thanks,
    Neeraja

    Are these duplicates side-by-side (e.g. A and then A again) or one after another (A, B, C... and then A, B, C...)?
    If they're one set after another, FM picks up the list of paratags to include in the bookmarks list from the first file in the book, so if this doesn' contain everything, it might help to import the additional formats into that one. Then clear/remove the exisiting bookmarks and only add back the Titles and Heading1 bookmarks (check that the TOC ones remain in the Don't include list).
