Sizing of precalculation server and workbook description while broadcasting

Hello Gurus,
First
i have a question concerning broadcasting. First we installed one precalculation server on a desktop but after creation  a lot of settings for broadcasting a workbook the sending vial email or portal did not show the workbook (numbers, textitems) correctly. I just saw NV for the numbers.
Then i deleted the broadcast settings from transaction RSRD_ADIM. After created one setting again after the deletion of all the settings i broadcasted one workbook via email successful. --> my suggestion was that it depends on the settings created for a precalculation server. Sizing is a problem, broadcasting the workbooks correctly. is there a relationship one precalculation server how many workbook broadcast settings?
Second when i broadcast a workbook via Email the name of the attached file is:
WORKBOOK_XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXtechnical nameXXXXXXXX.XLS
This name is meaningless. Is there a possibility to change the name of the of the broadcasting file?
Thanks and kind regards,
Murat

Hi Murat,
First: yes, there is a limitation on how many workbooks a precalculation server can process at once.
The older load balancing server version (see note 1275837) had the following environment variable to control how many instances it should start at a given time:
(Control Panel -> System -> Advanced -> Environment Variables) BEX_PRECALC_INSTANCES = 1. In this case, only one instance would be started at a time (that is, a workbook would be processed after another).
Second: No. It is not possible. I had a request here at SAP some time ago and the development said that it is just working as designed and no plans to develop such functionality were ongoing at that time.
Kind Regards,
Marcio

  • Is Precalculation server a prerequisite for Information broadcasting

    Hello Everybody,
I wanted to know is installation and configuration of pecalculation server a prerequisite for enabling Information broadcasting feature in BW 3.5 i.e; inorder to send emails to users .I mean inorder to send mails to users is it necessary to install pecalculation server first.
    Regards,
    Saumya

The Precalculation server is only needed if you want to distribute <b>workbooks</b>.  In order to distribute workbooks, the BW needs access to a computer with Excel on it. The precacluation server service software can be installed on a standard desktop PC.  It can be installed on mutliple desktops, or you can consider a centralized server, but for initial testing, a desktop will do. There are a number of OSS Notes to apply, several from SP 17 that deal with problems occuring as a result trying to distribute multiple wkbks simultaneoulsy.
You do <b><u>NOT</u></b> need it to distribute either query links or html formatted output.
You also need an IGS server if you want to be able to send your output in a zip file format.
Don't have the link handy, but try searching SDN on Precacluation Server - there is a good paper (think it was a How To...) that was just written in April on troubleshooting Precalculation Server issues.

  • BPEL server and java crashes while accessing a deployed process in console

    Hi,
I am running BPEL developer version on my local machine (win xp ). If I try to run a deployed process from my BPEL console by clicking on the process name, an Unexpected error dialog box pops up saying Java has encountered an unexpected error. After that the broser as well as the BPEL server window crashes. I have tried both IE and netscape.
Can someone help as this is completely preventing me to test my deployed processes.
    Thanks

Naah, I said, that will never work.  But to my shock and (pleasant) surprise, it does!  Here is a snippet of a little routine I cobbled together using LabVIEW for both the Writer and the Reader.
The Writer is on top.  It creates a Temp.txt file on my Temp directory, deletes it if it is already there, then opens it for writing.  There's a boolean "Done" flag that tells me when the Writer finishes, so I clear it before entering the Writing Loop.  Here, every half-second, I write the sequential numbers 0 .. 9, with a New Line to create a Text File of Lines.  When I'm finished, I close the file.
Below this is the Reader Loop, designed to start after the Writer Loop has opened (and created) the file.  Here we open the same file in Read-Only mode.  The Reader Loop also goes 10 times (I could have built in a Stop condition, but this is only a Proof-of-Concept).  The loop is initialized with the current File Position (0) in a Shift Register.  The inner While Loop is a "Wait for Data to Appear", a loop which checks 10 times a second to see if the File Position has changed, exiting when it does (meaning the Writer has Written Something).  It then reads a line from the File (the Read Text function has its "Read Lines" property set) and displays it.
When you run this, you will see the Reader's output, Line, count up, 0 .. 9, and then the program stops with no errors.  What fun!

  • Precalculation Server on a Virtual Server

We have tested precalculation server for workbook with our BW 3.5 installation that we are live with for quite sometime. One of the limitations of this precalculation server is, not all of three BW systems (Dev, QA, and Prod) can be connected to one physical precalculation server. We are wondering if we could use virtual servers with one physical server, each virtual server connecting to each BW instance. Has anybody tested this before? Your feedback will be highly appreciated.
    Thanks.
    Vinay Karna

technically it is possible to connect more than one system to one precalculation server.
You need to logon from the machine of the precalculation server to the different BW systems and execute TA RSRPRECADMIN register an new server and restart the windows service. The server will be active in all BW systems where you performed the steps before.
I knew that because i was the developer of the precalculation service.....

  • BI Precalculation Server

    Guys,
Any idea how to set up precalculation server and whats are the hardware requirement for it.
    Thanks
    P B

    Hi,
From SAP OSS note : 760775
The following steps are necessary for the precalculation and distribution of workbooks:
    1. You install the precalculation server from the Server Components CD.
    2. You install the .NET-Framework, Microsoft Excel 2000 (or higher) on the precalculation server. For more information see the installation guide on the SAP NetWeaver 04 Add-On DVD and under the Internet address service.sap.com/instguides -> SAP NetWeaver -> Release 04-> Installation-> Installation Guide -> SAP Business Information Warehouse.
    3. In Customizing, you establish which precalculation server will be available for the BW system. See SAP Reference IMG -> SAP NetWeaver -> SAP Business Information Warehouse -> Reporting-relevant Settings -> General Reporting Settings in Business Explorer -> Managing Precalculation Server. For more information see SAP Help Portal -> -> Documentation -> SAP NetWeaver -> Release 04 -> SAP NetWeaver -> Information Broadcasting -> Tasks for System Administration -> Administration of the Precalculation Server, and under the same path, Creating Precalculation Servers.

    Siva.

  • Regarding BW precalculation server

    Hi gurus,
We have BI 7.0, SAPGui 7.10, SAP Netweaver 2004s, Also we use Microsoft office 2003 (No SP installed)  I want to precalculate workbooks and broadcast the same. Could I know what version of .NET as well as what
precalculation server version should I install on my PC so that I can broadcast workbook.
    Regards
    Sree.

    Dear Mr. Varadarajan,
The note 745206 provides you with a link to download the latest BEx Precalculation server, and the path that you gave has two precalculation servers listed in it. I have already known about them, however, I want to know which one is the latest one. Is it the one provided in the notes, i.e.  BExPrecService.exe or is it  xPreCalServer06_1-10004472.msi  or is it xPreCalServer08_1-10004472.msi. At the same time, the .NET framework that i am gonna use would be a 2.0 SP2, so will both of these be compatible.

  • Precalculation Server error after 10 broadcasted workbooks

    Hi gurus,
i have a question concerning broadcasting workbooks. We are using the newest precalculation server with patch 13. The first 10 workbooks are calculated and sent via email. The rest of workbooks calculated are sent as a job  but the RSRD_Log transaction shows an error. It begins with "Unresolved exception occured in the precalculation server" then next message "System.Runtime.InteropServices.comException. The RPC server is unavailable (Exception from HRESULT:xxxxxx) "
Then some other messages are displayed. Then at the end it says cannot precalculate Workbook. In rsprecadmin  the server is green and ready.
Is there any restrictionin sending via Email?
How can i get the server again to continue sending?
How can i clear the queue, to get the precalculation server ready to continue scheduled workbooks?
    Thanks and kind regadrs,
    Murat

    Hi Edward,
we are testing the broadcast functionality and we want to go live first week in september. I hope you remember and suggested me the note which came out in CW33 with the precalculation server patch 13 . we are using it but still NVs but there is also the issue with the sizing. Last night we scheduled 16 times the same workbook. All 5 minutes one workbook should be sent out. 2 Precalculation server were set up to deal with them. In the SAP document "How to ...Troubleshoot Information Broadcasting (BEx Workbooks)" in chapter 2 it is mentioned that when ycurrently you can have 10 workbooks in the queue. Therefore we set up 2 precalculation server with 10 workbooks capacity. Then we set in the Broadcast setting the load balancing option without selecting any precalculation server. My intention would be the first 10 workbooks should be broadcasted with one of the precalculation server. After he has reached his capacity the next workbooks would be broadcasted with the second precalculation server. Am i wrong?
When i check the queue i see the 16 workbooks in "Queue Overview of Proccessed Error-Free Precalculations" but with a duration with 0 seconds. the log says  in RSRD_LOG says as described before the first message is "Unresolved exception occurred on the precalculation server" then "System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x800 0706BA): The RPC server is unavailable. (Exception" and at the end "Cannot precalculate workbook ZBROADCAST_TEST". I can see that when load balancing the second server is not used.
But while seraching for precalculation server it says "Precalculation server PRECALC_2 has only                                                 0 free instanzen => not selected" but why. it has never been used why 0 instances free?

Other workbooks work fine. I've already created a new precalculation server but it didn't help. Has anyone an idea what could be the cause or why this just happens with this workbook?
    Any advice could be helpful.
    Regards,
    Chrigu

    Hello All,
When you have an issue with a single workbook, try to open and re-save this workbook.
This is probably happens with Chrigu. Someone opened the workbook and save again.
    Also, another tip.
Open BEx Analyzer -> Click on "Global Settings".
Check the option "Repair workbook while execution" -> click "Ok"
    Execute and save the workbook.
This should solve issues with a single workbook.

  • Precalculation Server Broadcast Workbooks - BI7.0

    Hi,
We have installed Precalculation Server to broadcast our Workbooks in BI7.0 System. The configuration looks OK. We are able to successfully broadcast workbooks. We receive an email with attached excel file. But when we open up this excel file, there is no data returned. All we see is the template again.
I have checked the configuration again and also gone thru How to Information Broadcasting.pdf document, still no luck.
Can someone please point to where the issue might be?

    Hi Fahad,
Can you please send me or share information on how you set up the Precalculation Server?

    Hi Deepu,
Thanks for your answer. Now, it works when we tested manually. However, when the report reached the e-mail destination it was unreadable with the following error:
"report.xls cannot be accessed. The file may be read only or you may be trying to access read only location. Or, the server the document is stored on may not be responding. "
There are two options to proceed - retry or cancel. Do you have any idea ?
