Sizing pages to pictures

Question

I want to create a series of web pages each of which will
hold one illustration with, underneath, a caption with linking code
built-in.
There will also be navigation buttons.
If you think this is a picture gallery or photo album you
have it in one. I have found no way with most picture album
programs to insert the vitally important caption with link code
built-in. There may well be a program or extension to do it but I
have not found that progam or extension.
Doing it my way in Dreamweaver I open a basic page for each
shot, set up a two line table and put in first the picture and then
the text with the built-in link.
Above the picture I have graphic buttons for forward and back
with links built-in. I treat every picture to its own page and I
end up with page1.html, page2.html and so on.
I can then easily link these together and I have a slide show
but, important bit this, the text has a link built in which will
help overcome copyright problems..
My problem, which shows how new I am at all of this, is when
I do it this way the page that comes out is the standard size so
the illustration, depending on its size, has a large amount of
white space around.
Thus I want to be able to control the size of the page and I
am blessed if I know how to do it.
Any suggestions?
