Sketchy Blu Ray Playback

OK,  So I received my new HP Slimline s5360f, hooked it all up and put in a Blu Ray disk.  WOW, it was very Impressive Video and the Sound gave life back to my tuner!  And this was all through the HP Media Smart program..
Anyway,  I installed PC Tools "Spyware Dr with Antivirus" and now the playback of Blu Ray in the Drive is Sketchy.  It plays, then stalls, then plays, then stalls and is a mess.  So after spending some time on the issue, I shut down Spyware Dr, and the Drive plays the Movie without a Hitch again..  This is a Bit ODD Considering we are talking about a 64bit System with 6gigs of DDR3 and uncluttered with a bunch of Software and Fonts.
But now the Quality is No Longer there.  Its very Close, but definately noticeable that its not the "Right out of the Box" Quality.  The video is Very Nice, but is just not as sharp as it was, and the Audio is now missing alot of the Bottom End that really impressed.
I thought I would try WinDVD PRO and Installed the trial, but it will barely even load up, and when it does, it tells me that the MEDIA IS NOT SUPPORTED.
Is anyone else having this problem?  Or does anyone have any advice that might bring back the FULL Quality again?

I know some time has passed since you posted this but I just came across this post today. I'm havening a similar issue with my s5360f. When I got this PC, I was impressed with the quality of the BluRay movies played through HP MediaSmart software. I think I played approx 6 or so movies before it just stopped recognizing BluRay disks. I tried re-installing the HP software, ran the updates from Cyberlink & out of the blue, it would work again. Unfortunately it would be short lived and I continued to receive a variety of errors like "No media in Drive", "Drive not detected", "Drive missing or not installed", Drive doesn't support BluRay", or "Drive doesn't support writing to disk", etc.
A few days before my warranty expired, my PC went in for service and they replaced the drive. The day I got my PC back, I burned photos on a CD with no problems. I tried to play a BluRay but I goet an error message that the media in the drive was not supported. I tried again but I received another message that said there's no media in the drive. I immediately contacted HP Support and the 1st thing the agent said was my PC was no longer under warranty and I will have to pay for a support call and any I will have to pay for any parts and service. I explained that my PC just came back from being serviced under warranty but he stuck to his guns and said my PC was under warranty when it was last serviced but now it is not so I will be charged for any support regardless.
Very angrily I completed HP's Service call survey and wrote how distraught I was and I want a manager to contact me! I immediately got a call the next day. The 1st thing I was told was that my PC doesn't have BluRay and never did so it was impossible for me to have ever played a BluRay disk on my PC. Ironically, this was the 2nd time I was told this and proved them wrong on both occasions when I gave them the driver's model number. Unfortunately we are still troubleshooting, so no solution as yet but I'm finding many people have issues with this drive.
I'm just curious why the specs for s5360f no longer list BluRay drive, 3rd party software doesn't detect BluRay support on the drive and even HP Support state the s5360f didn't include a BluRay drive, however, my drive clearly has the BluRay symbol on the front of it and HP Diagnostic's System Information clearly lists the optical drive as: hp BDDVDRW CH20L Readable Media: CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-ROM, DVD-RAM, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD-R DL, DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD+R DL, BD-ROM, BD-R, BD-RE? And BD is the industry format for BluRay. Sketchy is right!

  • Does the imac support blu ray playback

    ????

The iMac along with other Mac do not support bluray playback....THAT BEING SAID,
You can play Bluray on the mac using an external bluray player and a piece of software known as Mac Blu-Ray Player.
I have it running on my MacBook Pro. I also do Blu-ray Authoring so I have a 12x BluRay drive in a OWC case.

  • HD DVD and Blu-Ray Playback in Leopard

Does anyone know if you can now playback a commercial HD DVD, using the XBOX 360 HD DVD Player or Toshiba HD DVD Drive, or commercial Blu-Ray disc, using the LG Blu-Ray Drive, in Leopard? There was talk this OS would finally support HD discs. Just wondering if it came to fruition. Thanks.

I tried it but it doesn't work. It seems Leopard doesn't support HD disks, HD-DVD that is. I don't have an externel BR player i can check with. But since HD-DVD isn't supported i doubt BR is.

  • Blu-ray Playback issue

I am trying to burn a 23.937 H264 blu-ray disc but having issues with playback once burned.  The disc plays but starts skipping or freezing towards the end.
In encore the video is fine.  on my last attempt a chapter item wouldn't even play but again in encore everything is fine.
i am creating an ISO file and then burning the image using verbatium 25GB disks
    Project:
mp4 h264 blu-ray format encoded in Media Encorder  and PCM audio

its a constant bitrate of 15 Mbps
Yes the Encore shows "Do not transcode"  also I tested the ISO file and it also freezes at the same spot but the m4v files plays back smooth.

  • Blu Ray playback skipping even when not burned to disk (CS6)

I'm using encore to create a simple blu ray disc image from 5 separate video files each with 2 audio tracks (stereo and 5.1). all the encoding is being done via media encoder using the H.264-blu ray presets and compressor for the surround sound so encore is just assembling the iso. Once this is done it skips and hangs in every video even when played back through the computer without being burnt to disc (just mounted for testing). Watching the data rate it is jumping all over the place and when it hangs it often drops to 0 or less than 5Mbp/s
Am i missing a step or encoding it incorrectly or is this a common bug? I've been through a stack of discs working on this problem and any help would be appreciated as I need to deliver our films on DVD and Blu Ray imminently.
    Cheers
    Rich

ok about to do that now - just noticed that my timeline is displaying upside down and in greyscale in the monitor - now I'm really starting to think Encore is paying up!!

  • HP MediaSmart DVD software and major Blu-ray issues

In September 2010, I bought an HP Pavilion Elite HPE 250-f desktop computer (running Windows 7). This computer was advertised as having a Blu-ray DVD player, as well as players for regular DVDs and CDs. From September 2010 to October 2014, I successfully played regular DVDs and CDs. But in October 2014, for the first time, I needed to view a Blu-ray DVD. Specifically, I needed to view the "Divergent" Blu-ray.
When I tried to play the "Divergent" Blu-ray (which was made in 2014), the HP MediaSmart DVD software (version 3.1.1.3317) and the Windows Media Player detected the Blu-ray but were not able to play the Blu-ray.
Next, I downloaded the Media Player Codec Pack, http://download.cnet.com/Media-Player-Codec-Pack/3000-13632_4-10749065.html. This Codec Pack was supposed to help Windows Media Player play the Blu-ray. That did not work.
I then downloaded Cyberlink PowerDVD 14, which played the Blu-ray for only about 7 seconds before crashing.
I downloaded TotalMedia Theatre version 6.0.1.123. However, this software did not even detect the Blu-ray.
Recently, I decided to revisit this issue. I installed the most advanced version of HP MediaSmart DVD. I installed HP TouchSmart DVD, version 4.1.2.5122.
TouchSmart flawlessly played disk 1 of the 2-disk "Star Trek" Blu-ray set (made in 2009). However, TouchSmart was not able to play the "Divergent" Blu-ray at all. After failing to play the "Divergent" Blu-ray, TouchSmart attempted to play disk 2 of the "Star Trek" Blu-ray set. TouchSmart played disk 2 with poor video.
Next, for some strange reason, TouchSmart became totally inaccessible. I could not start TouchSmart. I rebooted the computer. TouchSmart was then able to play the "Divergent" regular DVD, but was unable to play the "Star Trek" Blu-rays at all.
I did a system restore to the point just after the installation of TouchSmart. TouchSmart played regular DVDs well, but still could not play the "Star Trek" Blu-rays at all.
Next, I got rid of TouchSmart and installed HP MediaSmart DVD, version 4.1.4229 (sp49489.exe). MediaSmart 4.1.4229 flawlessly played the "Speed" Blu-ray (made in 2006). However, MediaSmart 4.1.4229 failed to play either of the "Star Trek" Blu-rays. And after failing to play the "Star Trek" Blu-rays, MediaSmart 4.1.4229 played "Speed" with poor video.
So, it appears that any specific version of HP MediaSmart DVD software will play old Blu-rays successfully, and will then subsequently fail to play more advanced, more recent Blu-rays. After that version fails to play the more advanced Blu-rays, that version will play the old Blu-rays, not as flawlessly as before, but rather with poor video quality or not at all.
I have read many threads on the HP forums and on other forums about people having trouble playing Blu-ray DVDs on a wide variety of HP computers. I went back to the specifications of my HP computer, and I found the following disclaimer about that computer's Blu-ray capabilities:
As Blu-Ray is a new format containing new technologies, certain disc, digital connection, compatibility and/or performance issues may arise, and do not constitute defects in the product. Flawless playback on all systems is not guaranteed. In order for some Blu-ray titles to play, they may require a DVI or HDMI digital connection and your display may require HDCP support. HD-DVD movies cannot be played on this Desktop PC. Some HD DVD and Blu-ray advanced features may not be supported. CPU power is dedicated to support HD DVD and Blu-ray playback functions. It is recommended that you close all other applications before and during HD DVD and Blu-ray playback. HD DVD and Blu-ray movies will only play through the HD DVD and Blu-ray player software. Advanced Access Content System (AACS) keys are integrated into your PC for copy protection purposes. Occasional renewal of the AACS key is required, and easily done by connecting to the internet.
I believe that I have gone way above and beyond ordinary diligence, to try to get my computer to play Blu-ray DVDs. The disclaimer states that certain issues may arise and that flawless Blu-ray playback is not guaranteed for all systems. But certainly my frustrating experiences, and the frustrating experiences of others, go way beyond the leeway given by HP's disclaimer, do they not? Has anyone thought about the possibility of a class-action lawsuit against HP?

In "Device Manager", under "DVD/CD-ROM drives", I see the following:
    hp BDDVDRW CH20L
I click on "hp BDDVDRW CH20L", and I see several tabs.
In the tab marked "Driver", we have the following:
    Driver Provider:   Microsoft
    Driver Date:           6/21/2006
    Driver Version:     6.1.7601.17514
    Digital Signer:      Microsoft Windows
In that same tab, clicking on "Driver Details" gives us the following:
    Driver files:      C:\Windows\system32\DRIVERS\cdrom.sys
    Provider:           Microsoft Corporation
    File version:    6.1.7600.16385 (win7_rtm.090713-1255)
Copyright:       Microsoft Corporation. All Rights Reserved.
    Digital Signer:   Microsoft Windows
I think that, back in October 2014, when this Blu-ray issue first came up, I updated the driver. That may be why you see the following different versions :
    6.1.7601.17514
    6.1.7600.16385 (win7_rtm.090713-1255)
So, how would I update the firmware? To what version should I update the firmware?

This ebay seller apparently has the drives for all HP models...the exact part number you need (depends on whether yours is black or biscotti in color) is in the prior link above.I would contact the seller in advance with a question and be sure he has your exact model as he seems to be selling IDE drives and I am sure yours is a SATA interface.

$139 is not too bad. A Blu-Ray reader with a DVD burner was an option on your laptop series so it can work. You likely will need to add Blu-Ray playback software to watch movies. If you wanted a Blu-Ray burner the answer is even more complex so I hope you only meant you want a drive to watch Blu-Ray movies.

  • Blue-ray reader for lenovo x61s

Hi i am new to the lenovo forum i am looking if someone can help me my question is can i get a blue ray reader or blue ray burner for my lenovo x61s and if so can someone direct me to the correct one that would fit my model Thanks......
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Blu-ray playback, if that's what your're interested in, probably won't be that great in the X61.  The X61s low voltage CPU probably doesn't have enough processing power for smooth playback.  The graphics card on the X61s unlike newer integrated GPUs cannot help with the decoding.  It's all left to the CPU, which struggles cause it's getting no help from the GPU.

  • Blu ray and surround sound

I just purchased a Sony Bravia kdl-52v4100 and a ps3 to watch blu ray. Now I want to buy a surround sound but watch blu ray at the same time with out buying a blu ray dvd player. Is there any way I can connect my PS3 with the surround sound to play together.

Assuming you don't already have a surround system, and plan to use the PS3 for DVD and Blu-Ray playback:
    1)  Buy surround system with an optical audio input.  Most have this.  Since you have a PS3 you don't need one of the ones that has a built-in DVD player.  I'm partial to the Yamaha HTIB (Home Theater in a Box) systems.
    2)  Buy optical audio (TOSLINK) cable
    3)  Connect TOSLINK cable from PS3 to surround receiver
    4)  Leave existing video connection between PS3 and TV in place
No need for a separate DVD player, the PS3 handles this.
You will have to change some options of the PS3 to enable the optical audio output.  I can't help you here as I don't own a PS3.

  • Blu-ray build: no video (solid red, green, etc image)

    Hey everyone,
If this problem has already been addressed, could someone please point me in the right direction? I searched and didn't find anything similar, but wasn't too sure what to search for.
My problem: Everytime I build a blu-ray project in Encore, I am getting the same result; the video will play (according to the progress bar on the player), but the image is always a solid color, sometimes it's red, green, tan, black, apparently just random, but always the same color throughout the entire video.
I have tried so many different things at this point, I'm at a loss for how to proceed further. I've tried this with at least three different projects, all of which were created in Premiere. I have attempted both the dynamic link from Premiere to Encore and exporting the video first and importing into Encore later. I have tried transcoding as .264 and MPEG2 (I am not very knowledgeable about the settings, so I use the defaults). I have tried building the project in Encore as a blu-ray folder and as an ISO. I have burned to discs and played just the digital files on my PC.
The video always plays fine up until after it is exported from Encore (that is, it previews fine in Premiere, exported video from Premiere plays fine in players like VLC, and the video previews fine in Encore). And I have no trouble building DVDs in Encore with the same video, timeline, and all that jazz.
The only thing I haven't done yet is gone to the trouble of trying to reinstall Encore, which will be my next step if noone here has any suggestions. I am running CS6 with all recent updates. I have been testing the blu-ray playback in PowerDVD and a PS3.
Like I mentioned above, I'm not very proficient in video. If I left out important details, just let me know. Thanks in advance for any help!
    Matt

When I play the m2ts file, it works fine in VLC and also in PowerDVD. That's interesting, but I'm not sure what that means?
If the actual m2ts file from the Encore build does not show the problem, but what I assume is the same file on disk (or in iso) shows the problem, what could cause such a problem? (I don't know.) The more frequent oddity is a problem on burned disk and not on iso or folder, which points to the burner, burn speed, or media. But that does not appear to be the issue here.
I can't find the example at the moment, but try creating a tiny bluray project and see if the problem occurs. If so, you can upload it for me to take a look.
For example, one menu with one button, linked to a 30 second timeline, using a sample of your material that is causing the problem. If that shows the problem, I would also try a bars and tones sample to eliminat your actual video - although I assume your video is part of the equation.

  • Encore CS3 - Blu-ray authoring - video formats?

Does anyone know if we'll be able to use h.264 or VC-1 video formats for Blu-ray discs in Encore CS3?
I already own some software that's MPEG2 only but would prefer more flexability (Roxio's DVDit Pro HD)
Will you be able to do "pop-up" menus that you can have appear while the video is still playing?

Blu Ray is not as easy as some folks think.
Wait until you try to get these titles replicated.....you will find that only Sony can actually do the job.
To quote from our replication company - who talked directly to Sony as they wanted to get into this:
    >the Sony guy was very open about Blu-ray production and replication - basically he says only Sony has the resources and time to devote to authoring and mastering the Blu-ray materials and the up fron costs (starting at £20,000 up front before any disc is made) mean that this is never going to be something for anyone other than the biggest media companies to get into. At least, not for the foreseeable future.
And that is a direct quote.
Additionally, they are also saying that Scenarist is the *only* tool they will accept content from. Still trying to find out about HD DVD replication - it is a LOT easier & cheaper to do.
Another issue with Blu Ray is that BD-R, the recordable format, will simply not play on most set top players. only PS3 will play these.
Finally, of course, Sony are also lying about the sales figures, as they have included PS3 consoles in the figure for Blu Ray players, which is sophistry. Most people buy PS3 for games, not Blu Ray playback. True BRD player figures are apparently well under 20,000 total.
They are ALSO lying about Casino Royale "sales" of over 100,000
Most of these were actually given away for free, not sold.......

  • FCE 4 slideshows and Blu Ray media

I'm a newbie to video editing and was wondering if I could use FCE 4 to import hi res photographs from Aperture 2.01 and create HD slideshows which would include the Ken Burns effects panning across my panoramic images. I would then like to output the footage to Blu Ray Disc to play in a Blu Ray set top player.
I have Toast Titanium 9, which I'm told will handle the burning to Blu Ray Disc, but will FCE 4 handle the outputting and if so, which format would it output in?
I also intend to invest in an HD camcorder, any recommendations for use with FCE 4/
    Many thanks
    Mark

Yep, you certainly can - remember the approx 30 minute limit though. And the results from my Sony FX7E via Blu-ray DVD, through PS3 to my Samsung 42" are stunning, and in some carefully filmed and well lit situations exceed the quality of some of the commercial Blu-ray feature films I've watched.
I don't know about profiles. I do know that the PS3 is rated very highly amongst Blu-ray playback devices and, of course, as on online device, it is able to download firmware updates whenever, as ours did soon after we bought it. And you get a free games machine for the kids as part of the package!

  • Burning blu-ray disks with Archgon

I have a HD camcorder and create home movies of my daugher with FCP X. I have an iMac (late 2012 model I think).  I recently purchased the Sea Tech Archgon blu-ray writer super drive with the intent of buring blu-ray disks for the grandparents.  The instruction manual for the blu-ray player states "Please purchase and download appropriate blu-ray playback software for Mac OS".  My questions are:
    1) When I plug in the drive, no icon appears on the desktop.  There is power to the unit because it allows me to open and put a disk in.
    2) Do I need to purchase Mac Blu-Ray player just for the iMac to see the drive before I can burn any blu-ray disks?
    3) I don't intend to use the drive to watch any blu-ray movies.  This is strictly for making blu-ray disks that can be popped into a regular blu-ray player so the grandparents and other relatives can enjoy the home movies.
    4) Is FCP X an appropriate software, which I already have on my computer?  It allows me to create DVD directly from FCP X, but when I tried to do it from FCP X, this drive does not come up as an option.
    5) I also have Titanium Toast and purchased the blu-ray upgrade.  Then I save the file from FCP as a master on the computer and attempted to burn the blu-ray using Toast.  Again, this drive does not come up as an option.

    1. Any external burner will only become recognized once you insert media. If you plug it into the Mac and launch Toast, it should show at the bottom of the Toast window. You can choose it and control the drive with Toast - open tray, close tray, insert DVD, etc.
    2. No.
    4. Not sure re. blu-ray, but try to export it as a .mov or Video_TS folder, then drag either into the Toast window. That is how I proceed using iMovie and/or iDVD. (I only use FCE for special effects/layered intros, etc., export at best quality settings, then use those with iMovie and/or iDVD). You do need software (Toast is best because of the blu-ray plugin) to burn to DVD.
    5. Again, the drive should show up at the bottom - see screenshot (mine is only showing my internal Superdrive; once I attach my external burner, both will show up):

I picked up a Kindle Fire HD today and found that one of my apps is not working on the device I have found no documentation that indicates that there are any problems with older apps and the Kindle Fire HD, and Gold Level support has provided no help
