Skewed Objects on Art Brush

I have a bunch of baubles placed across a path painted with a Pattern Brush, but the brush insists on skewing said baubles when the curves achieve strong degrees. Is there a way to assign certain objects in a pattern brush to be protected from distortion? Sorta like the masks used in Photoshop while using the Content-Aware Scaling.
I did attempt to edit the spine of a blend to achieve a similar effect, but the baubles were  not too shy to overlap; Kind of a problem.

The pattern segments were designed with a rectangle where the path is and a separate shape for the bumps. In most cases, I would rather the highly augmented bumps just not appear.

  • Art brush question

When I use an art brush on a rectangle the corners all have a flat, angled
outside edge. It doesn't matter what art brush I use, it happens with all
of them. I've tried changing the miter type but that doesn't do anything
with art brushes. Is there anyway to get the brushes to 'flow' around the
    corners without the flat spot?
    Thanks!
    Richard

The simplified file in question is here:
    https://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0B0kosHJIs4dTZTE1MjgyM2UtZmZmNi00ZDMwLThiNzAtZGE1OTI3MzFhN jBm&hl=en&authkey=CJvuvO0B
    Two layers, two objects.
The blue object is the subject of discussion as the art brush.
The "crystalized" oval with the transparent gradient is on a locked layer.
Trying to change the direction of the art brush while the transparent gradient object's layer is locked fails.
Unlock the layer and the direction change works as expected.
(The CS5 symbol sprayer problem has been discussed on this forum in the past, probably NOT related here since I ruled it out by deleting any in the file)

  • Incomplete border around closed path with art brush

I want to create a border around a path, essentially another path at a fixed distance from the original, but when I apply an art brush to the path the border has a break in it, as if it wasn't connected.  I have checked to make sure all of my paths are joined, am I using the wrong tool?  Here's a picture of what I'm talking about

Why don't you try using Object>Path>Offset Path?

  • Created new Art Brush but it dissapears

Let me just say I am reasonably new to Illustrator.
I've created a new art Brush: New brush>Art Brush> and made my selections and clicked ok. The brush then shows in the brush palette where I have access to use it but then when I close the document and reopen a new one the brush dissapears. Where did it go and how do I get it back??
Please help... not sure where I am going wrong in saving the brush.

Once you create a brush in Illustrator you need to save it by choosing save brushes under Brush libraries menu.
What you can do now open the old document  click on the save brushes and than open the new document and under Brush libraries menu select other libraries and open the saved brush library from the previous document.

  • CS4 Illustrator art brush applied to path

I've made an art brush that looks like this:
And applied it to some wavy vertical lines. The lines are open paths, all drawn with the pen tool. The brush works fine on some of the lines, but others end up looking like this:
    Any idea what's causing this?

Oh, sorry - I misunderstood Scott's comment. But…there are no fills applied to the original wavy lines; they are just lines. To clarify, in this image, #1 is one of the original wavy lines (just a .5pt line, no fill); #2 is that same line with the brush applied; #3 is a different original wavy line; #4 is #3 with the brush applied, and #5 is a short wavy line with the brush applied, included to show the brush effect on an entire line. 4 & 5 are correct - this is what I expect to happen when I apply the brush. #2, with the even/very oddly filled cut off section, is incorrect.
However, I did figure out that I could fix the problem by slightly reshaping the curves in the misbehaving lines. I'm still curious about what's causing it (don't think anything's corrupt), but this will work for now. Thanks for your help  :-)

  • Art brush bug(s).

I really don't know why it happens. 'Art brush original' in second picture is art brush material for art brush in both pictures.
In the first picture, the circle has no fill, and it's showing white fill as if it has.
And the second picture, as you see, something's gone horribly wrong.
I'm not really sure but this hadn't happened till the latest update(I might be wrong).
download link for second example: [download]

Well, I found out myself what's causing this bug, it was blank fill/stroke rectangles on each element of the brush, still doesn't explain why, but yeah. Bug is still a bug.

  • Art brush not following path

I have an art brush that I created to achieve an offset on an open path.  In some location the brush doesn't follow the path.  I have attached an image.  The narrow pink line is the actual path.  The thicker pink line is the art brush I created for the offset.  You can see at the top of the image what the style is supposed to look like.  Once the path starts curving towards the bottom the path and the brush get out of alignement.  I have tried adding points, which works on other types of brushes, but doesn't seem to work on art brushes.
Any ideas on how I can fix this?  Thanks.

It only occurs around certain curves and bends.  Here is other path with the issue.  You might be able to recreate if you draw a shape like this.  Also, I am using CS4.  I don't know if this is a bug that may have been fixed in CS5.  I don't have any effects applied to any of the strokes.  The only items listed in each line of the appearance is the stadard. "Opacity: Default"
Sometimes if I just redraw the corner using the pencil it will help, but not always. And sometimes adding an extra anchor point at the beginning or end with help, but again not always.  It is very strange and the reason I avoid art brushes if possible.  However, I can't find other way of offsetting a stroke on an open path.

  • Live linking or "nesting" of art brushes

I don't know how feasible this would be to implement but what I would like to see is the ability to "nest" art brushes. To explain, what I'd like to be able to do is make one art brush with say, a "Stretch Between Guides" setting that when used unexpanded to make part of another brush, still retains the "Stretch Between Guides" for that element or to be able to set a colorization method for that brush and have it override the colorization method chosen for the brush it is incorporated into or the ability to use one brush as part of an element in another brush and then after modifying the original brush, get a dialog similar to what you have if you go to edit a brush after you've used it where you have the option to apply that change to the existing artwork (another words, to modify the new art brush) or to expand the element in the brush and break the link or nesting...
I'm not sure if I'm being entirely clear with this but it seems like if there were a way to do this similar to the way symbols or some live effects work, it would open up a huge number of possibilities with the brush tool.
I'm sure this probably falls in the "easier said than done" category but with a preference to allow or disallow this feature with individual brushes, it seems like it could be done without risk of breaking older files or workflows.

Take a pencil and paper and make a drawing of what it should do.
What you get is a bunch of pages that display what you describe. Then draw lines.
A link from one image on *the top page* to *a page that shows three individual projects*.
Then a link from one image on *that page that shows three individual projects* to a *the individual project page*.
The sub-pages should have their page hidden from the menu, but still have the main page visible in the menu.
Always make sure your visitor can get back to the top page.

  • Art Brushes appear grey, and not Rich Black.

Art brushes are showing a grey version of what should be a Rich Black RGB 0, 0, 0,. Furthermore, expanding the art brush stroke and sampling the color shows the strokes "Black" is actually: 32,32,32, pre-expansion the RGB sample shows the stroke is 0,0,0.
    Color Mode=RGB
    Print Proof=NO
    Document =RGB
Display all Blacks, print all Blacks=Rich Black
Options for Art Brush show art brush swatch is Rich Black but using eyedropper (within brush options window) and sampling preview stroke CHANGES swatch preview from Rich Black to Grey. (see attachments)
image 1 (below): Art brush stroke (greyish), over top of pen tool shape (rich Black)
image 2 (below): RGB of stroke
image 3 (below): RGB of stroke after converting to shape.
Image 4 (below—art brush options): Art Brush Before sampling using colorization...
Image 5 (below—art brush options): Art Brush sampled using colorization..

    Try this.
Use one of the Chalk and Charcoal brushes, like Charcoal - Feather.
Set the colorization method to NONE.
Make a mark. Take a sample reading with the Eyedropper tool. The RGB value will be, 32,32,32 (or some place around there) but defiantly not 0,0,0.
Now EXPAND the stroke and take a reading of the shapes color. Same values.
    It is NOT RICH BLACK.
I DO NOT understand emils directions.

  • Art brush on an ellipse creates a gap

See attached file. I am applying this Art Brush on a perfect circle I've drawn with the Ellipse Tool. It is a closed path. Why the gap? Any way to get it to go all the way around?

Art brushes have a beginning and end regardless of what they are applied to. IF the ends of the art used to create the art brush aren't the same as the , then you'll see the end caps.
Art brushes aren't designed to even out the shape. They simply take your shape and transform it to the path. That miniscule gap between the two ends can be corrected by drawing a no-fill, no-stroke rectangle around the art that stops just short of the end of the artwork and is behind the art. Then drag the art and hollow rectangle to the Brush panel.
For your artwork.. I'd use a Pattern Brush, not an Art Brush.

  • Miter on Art Brushes

I'm trying to create a tribal tattoo looking design, so I created an art brush that is fixed in width and tapers at the ends since this is the way most of the lines in those tattoos look. The problem I am having is with mitering. If I create any angle that isn't very shallow the miter looks very bad as if the miter limit is set too low, even at miter limit 500. The corner appears chopped off. Is there anything I can do about it? Is there a better way?
    Thanks

    ...even at miter limit 500.
Miter limit setting has nothing to do with ArtBrushes. It only affects ordinary strokes. ArtBrushes try to stretch artwork along a path. The artwork doesn't really get mitered at corner points. It tries to "bend around" the corner, and what you see is what you get.
Depending on the artwork, applying the Round Corners Effect to the spine path is about all you can do, short of expanding the results and manually correcting it.

  • Beginners art brush question

    Hello, using CS5,
I've created an art brush and applied it to a path. I get the following result..
Instead i'd like the ovelapping section to appear so that one part of the path is on top of the other. Any ideas?

    candlecatrat,
You may cut either segment of the path on either side of the crossing and move it above/below the rest.

  • Will this Art Brush trick return in CS5?

I hope, in final release of Illustrator CS5 opportunity of making uniform spirals from Art Brush will return.
Because, as I saw, it’s absent in the pre-release.
    P.S. sorry for my English

    Nice demo!
Sadly, this is NOT fixed in CS5.
I wasn't aware you could do these tricks, but now that I see them, I really would like this feature to work. It looks like the bug appeared in CS3, and has gone unfixed. Has it been reported as a bug? This forum (new features) might not be the best place to report it...
    Thanks,
    Allen

  • Edit/update Art Brushes like you edit/update Symbols

To update an art brush, currently you have to:
    - Pull the brush into the drawing area
    - Edit the shapes
    - Create another brush from those shapes (and enter all specifications all over again)
    - Select every path that had the original brush
    - Apply the new brush
    - Delete the original brush
This could go much quicker like so:
    - Enter an isolation mode for the brush (like when double clicking a symbol in the symbols palette)
    - Make the changes
    - Exit isolation mode
    Thank you.

thanks for all the replies. those totally got me the idea. i was just having some problems finding a reference. more exactly an ebook that i can try to follow to learn more about adf bc programming. can you please suggest me of ebooks that tackles these types of subjects or stuff that I can download so I can study even when I am offline? thanks

  • Changing color stop gradients by eyedropping objects on art board

I'd like to be able to change a single color stop on a gradient by picking a color of an object on the art board. I know you can make custom swatches then pull them onto the gradient, but that doesnt work when you just want to add a color on the fly. Also if you want to change a color stop using the color picker it should come up with the color that the stop currently is, not something else. Thanks!

When the color stop in the gradient is selected, take the eyedropper, press shift and click on the color you want applied to the stop.
Pressing shift means sometimes that colors will be converted through color management though. For example when clicking on a placed photo.
