Skin Softening Plug in

I'm using CS4 Extended. I'm now getting busy enough with my photography on the side that softening the skin manually through layers is becoming rather time consuming.
I'm curious if there is some kind of plug in that is able to speed up productivity on skin softening.
Any advice on time management as relates to post processing of skin?
Thanks,
Robert

You might want to look at third-party plug-ins like Portraiture by Imagenomics; Digital GEM Airbrush Professional by Kodak; SkinTune by PhotoTune; etc.
Just Google Photoshop plug-in skin smooth.

  • LR 3.6 Skin Softener

I have that feature on my Macbook Pro.  However, on my desktop MacPro I don't see that even though I'm on the same version.  What gives? Any ideas?   I have the Iris adjustment, I have the teeth whitening, just not the skin softener....
I'm running (where the option is missing)  MacPro Intel, 8TB across four drives if that helps.  I've attached a screenshot with the brush tool pulled down.  Any help is greatly appreciated.

Its a preset that you have either recorded over, has been deleted or has just faded out of clarity ( pun intended)
These are the  paramaters for the Soften Skin,
    Soften Skin
    exposure : 0.00
    brightness : 0
    contrast : 0
    saturation : 0
    clarity : -100
    sharpness : 25
colour X ( ie no colour)
If as R Owens says does not work for you, simply set these parameters and then save as a new preset
    I also have
    Soften Skin (low)
    exposure : 0.00
    brightness : 0
    contrast : 0
    saturation : 0
    clarity : -50
    sharpness : 0
colour X ( ie no colour)
Whether this is mine adapted preset or a softer option I can't remember. I do know that the -100 clarity is far too excessive for my liking.
Hope his resetting or my parameters above can help you.
    Happy Christmas

  • No pop-up for skin softening or teeth whitening etc.

When I go to the adjustment brush, the pop-ups for skin softening and teeth whitening do not pop-up.  How can I get these to show up on my screen?

Under LR Preferences, Presets, click on the Resore Local Adjustment Presets.

  • Reinstalling The Skin Soften Adjustment Brush in Lightroom 3.5

Last week I accidentally deleted the "Skin Soften" adjustment brush in Lightroom 3.3. I upgraded to Lightroom 3.5 hoping it would reinstall the adjustment brush, but no such luck. I am having trouble locating information and understanding how to reinstall this brush. If anyone could help me do this, it would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Go to Preferences, Presets Tab, and click "Restore Local Adjustment Presets".

  • Converting to jpeg in CS2 after skin softening in LR2.4

I have not used Adjustment Brushes much, so I do not know if this is a known problem. Running with XP. I did a skin softening, cropped and exported as a tiff. Went to CS2, opened file, did some acne removal, and went to save as a jpeg to send to lab. It will not save, saying "could not complete your request because of a program error." At first I thought it was a computer problem, since I am having a little "old computer" trouble. I shut down, restarted everything, re-exported the file from LR, and same problem. So I exported a jpeg instead, and no problem saving it in CS after acne removal. I tried to search the forum, but the search is not very good.

It's an issue that's been around for quite some time. Exporting as JPEG and possibly PSD are the workarounds.
I can't recall the exact cause of the problem, but lies with Photoshop CS2 rather than Lightroom. Therefore, since CS2 is no longer current/supported it's highly unlikely that a fix will be released.

  • Can not find the Skin Soften option with the adjustment brush 2.0

When I first installed 2.0 I had an option for skin softening with the adjustment brush. Now it's gone. Does everyone using Lightroom 2.0 have skin soften with the adjustment brush?

In Develop press K for Adjustment Brush (or click the Brush Icon). The it appears in the drop down menu next to Effect: that defaults to Exposure and has a small set of up and down arrows to the right of it. Soften Skin is last after a divider. It also appears (????) there for Graduated Filter (M).

  • SKIN SOFTENING IN LIGHTROOM

I am trying to soften skin on a photo and it is turning the skin red (like a light sunburn)....what can i do to fix this?

I Would either add an adjustment brush over the skin area and then minus clarity, which will soften skin.
or you could try going to HSL, click the little button (forget what it's called!), hover the mouse over the red area and gently lower it by scrolling on the mouse.
the downside to this method is it will lower saturation if red across the picture.
maybe there are other ways, I will watch his post with interest. I hope Adobe add the facility to alter colour in a discrete area (like in Capture One Pro 8) in LR6.

  • Advanced Skin Softening

I am using Elements 10.  I have a portrait photo loaded in the editor.  I have used Control J to duplicate the background into Layer 1.  I used the filter Guassian Blur to Blur the duplicate Layer.  I then used the Alt and clicked on Add Layer to ad a black layer mask.  I set my foreground to white.  However, when I use the Brush(B) to paint over the face & skin of the portrait, it does not apply white to mask and let the blur show through on the image?  What have I done wrong?

Why not just click on the Add Layer Mask button? And when you have created the mask, make sure that it is the mask that is selected in the layer panel, and not the image, before painting in white. The following is from PSE12, but 10 should be similar. Note the border around the mask thumbnail showing that it is selected.

  • Photoshop CS6 for Mc

In the last week I upgraded and downloaded the NEW version of Photoshop extended and for the first few days it performed OK.
Today it has started to do something that I have never come across before, when I go to save a file, ie save a .psd file as a .jpeg file it says it will save it as a .dcm and I can only create a .jpeg file if I go down the list of file extensions and choose a totally unrelated file extension.
Can anyone please help me solve this problem.
    regards

  • A little disappointed in quad

First let me say that I am a photographer and not a computer whiz. I peruse these forums trying to learn as much as I can. I recently switched from an "old" dual 2.0 powermac to a quad. Originally sucked in by Aperture and wanted a machine to run it faster. I have since decided that Aperture in it's present form is unusable to me, but certainly expected much increased performance with my Adobe Bridge / CS2 workflow.
    Previous G5 PM: dual 2.0, 3.5 g ram, ATI Radeon 9600 pro
Present quad: 6.5 g ram, geoforce 6600 (stock)
All external hard drives, etc. are the exact same as before. Photoshop configuration (scratch disk, ram usage, etc.) set exactly the same as before. Overall, the quad is definately much "snappier" and much improved for multi-tasking with different applications open, etc. but some commands and actions in PS are actually SLOWER?? Basic things like "save for web" and "file close" (command + w) give a brief spinning beachball now where before they were instantaneous. Actions I use constantly actually take longer now. Filters (sharpening, blur, skin soften, etc.) do run a little faster but the most basic commands take longer????
I used the firewire apple transfer utility to move all software, etc. to the new quad. I use external drives to store all image files, etc. just the same as before.
Am I expecting too much difference? Photoshop not able to take advantage of extra processing or ram?? Comments?
    G5 Dual 2.0 Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Photoshop configuration (scratch disk, ram usage, etc.) set exactly the same as before
You shouldn't be needing a scratch disk anymore, Tiger is supposed to override Photoshop CS2's RAM limit and give it all it needs. (only CS2 supposedly)
4GB is supposed to give 40% more performance than 2GB in a Quad.
So what I'm guessing is your using up your RAM for other things, widgets, other programs and now your swapping to your scratch disk, which if you need one, really needs to be the fastest thing possible because your replacing a drive I/O speed for RAM.
A RAID O pair of the fastest drives and the fastest interface you got. This would need to be a pair of 10,000 RPM external SATA drives with a large cache, preferably 16MB, like a pair of 150 GB Western Digital RaptorX's in some sort of external enclosure like a MiniG with a Sonnet PCI SATA card, which for the Quad isn't quite out yet.
However a pair of empty Firewire 400 external drives each with a direct connection to the Quad and RAID O'ed, might do the job cheaper for less performance.
The important thing is you need a separate channel to each drive, I don't know how many Firewire 800 ports there are on the Quad, but you would need two to use this interface at maximum speed.
Of course the problem comes up that your hogging all your ports, you just can't disconnect a RAID O set as a scratch disk at will either and expect PS to be nice to you.
But it would be just better to get more RAM and get done with it.
Overall, the quad is definitely much "snappier" and much improved for multi-tasking with different applications open, etc. but some commands and actions in PS are actually SLOWER?? Basic things like "save for web" and "file close" (command + w) give a brief spinning beach-ball now where before they were instantaneous. Actions I use constantly actually take longer now. Filters (sharpening, blur, skin soften, etc.) do run a little faster but the most basic commands take longer????
This is your scratch, boot or file drive doing this to you.
Mac OS X performs much better with a very fast, slim boot drive as it caches all the time. Western Digital is coming out with a 10,000 RPM, 16MB cache, 150GB internal SATA which will make a excellent boot/itunes/bare bones "home" drive for performance. With your files in new folders on another internal drive, like the stock or something faster.
I had to RAID O my two Raptors (74GB each) to get a little more space as I keep them less than 50% filled for maximum performance in Mac OS X. However it can be a bit risky and I clone once a week to a external drive with daily file backups.
Needless to say I don't see many beach-balls.
Now another thing is you got the stock video card, supposedly some processing is dumped to that, so that might be affecting performance.
Also you have to expect that PS CS2 isn't quite fully optimized for a Quad yet, it's are pretty recent hardware addition, and there is a lot of software being recoded at Adobe from Code-warrior (now obsolete) to X-Code for Universal Binaries.
Adobe might be standardizing their code based on a dual core, because most Mac's and PC's will be having that and it's easier to write once than to write a special version for Quads. Who knows? We will find out later I guess.
What's important is you got a monster computer at a great price, the software will have to catch up that's all. Just get more RAM so you have PS CS2 use it's 4GB needed and then make sure you get more to cover anything else you like to run at the same time. Run everything in RAM as much as possible without swapping to your boot drive or scratch disk.
I have some more performance and cloning info at my site, take a peak

  • How do I go back and re edit a document that I've already exported?

It will not allow me to use any of the basic tools such as the blemish tool, skin softening tool, etc....

Sounds like you're pretty new to Lightroom.  Rather than open a new thread for each basic question, I think you need to do some reading.  I suggest:

  • Creating background for sub-titles?

I remember in FCP7 I could make a custom 'solid' clip, resize it small, make semi-opaque, position it behind the sub-title, then use some kind of edge-softening plug-in from the effects bin ... which would take away the sharp edges of the semi-opaque solid clip ... which I would then make just enough opaque to make the text stand out, but not enough so the background shadow clip was obvious.
I'm trying to figure out if there is a way in FCPX to blur and soften the edges of a Custom solid?

    Thank you Tom,
I scanned through a couple of times ... must have been looking for 'feathering' ... tired eyes.
    Very much appreciated,
    Ben

  • Are laggy adjustments/rendering camera specific?

The thread on thumbnails got me to thinking, some people report snappy adjustments, quick rendering and great performance with A3. Others (like myself) experience slowdowns on some photos after applying several layers of edits to a photo ("processing" thumbnails, slow rendering of adjustment changes etc.)
Just a few things that tend to take a long time to render an updated screen view for me (i.e. I get a low quality jaggy preview and it takes up to 20 seconds to "sharpen up" and show the changes:
. ANY changes to the Raw Fine Tuning brick, especially in 100% view
. some brushes take a long time to render changes (skin soften and sharpening to name a couple) again, worse in 100% view
. noise reduction (worse in 100%)
. Edge Sharpening (worse in 100%)
. rendering a proper image after zooming 100% into a photo after it's been adjusted moderately with the above adjustments, or cropped/straightened. Also slow to render if scrolling around in 100% view.
Notice that the worst wait times tend to appear in 100% view, though zoomed out sometimes I still get the "loading" pinwheel. These are adjustments that I prefer (justifiably so) to do in 100% view but the lag is just terrible sometimes. Some photos are worse than others, and it tends to be worse as the adjustments pile up.
My equipment is listed in the sig, my MBPro tends to be a bit faster than the iMac. Before you ask, I've done all the standard performance enhancing things (previews settings, faces off, defrag etc etc etc).
I am using Canon 7D full size raw files (18mp, ~25MB files). A couple people in the other thread mentioned this sort of lackluster performance with their 7D files, and I've seen people with 5DMk2's complain as well. I wonder if Aperture has a hard time dealing with large raw files, specifically Canon raw files.
So informal poll, three part question:
    (1) Are you experiencing slow downs in rendering of adjustments on your photos, especially at 100% view?
    (2) What type of file from what camera are you using (i.e. large .jpg from Nikon D70, full size raw from Canon 1dMk4 etc)
    (3) What is your computer set up?
I wonder if this is a trend, and am just curious to see if my wild theory has any merit.
I see no reason why my two machines run LR and PShop flawlessly and with instant graphical feedback of ALL adjustments, while A3 lags and chews on the adjustment for up to half a minute before showing me what my sharpening move did to the photo at 100%.
If it is some sort of trend, maybe it's fixable in a software update that might be forthcoming. I really, REALLY like Aperture 3, it's pretty much exactly what I want/need for a photo management/editing program (save for the lack of output sharpening, but that's another thread for another day :)) I just wish it was as snappy as the Adobe products with my 7D files.

I certainly think that the size of the file is a factor . My 5d MKII files (>20Mbyte) are slower than files from my S90 (around 10MByte ), but on my system configuration perfectly manageable and usable.
I think the file size, GPU memory/speed and memory in general are all factors that interact together to create what some see as lags and slow downs.
Sharpening and noise reduction is a fairly intensive algorithm to apply in real time ( I know, I have written code to do it in non real time and it's a lot of pixel sampling and comparing, computing ).
I have conducted extensive testing with Aperture 3.0 and for that matter Lightroom as well ( lot's of people point to LR as being much better and I'm fed up with the generalization ). The reality is, both programs struggle to keep up with the application of real time application of localized brush strokes with large files, especially when you have lots of adjustments applied. I have some interesting data comparing these things and might publish it one of these days.
I think Apple need to be realistic with minimum system requirements to run fully all of the features with programs like AP3. Sure, you can apply adjustments to a small JPEG when you only have 1GB of RAM of 128MB GPU RAM etc, but it's common sense that at some point when you files are 20, 50, 100MB you are going have an issue when you are attempting to overlay in real time multiple computations to an image.
I also think Apple has not yet optimized the code in this area. I have carefully monitored the number of processor threads, memory usage and CPU cycles when some of these things are being applied and, while I am not privy at all to anything under the hood with Aperture, as a fairly seasoned software developer of real time automation software, I think they have some tweaking to do, that will make this better for more people across a range of hardware and image sizes. At least I hope so! It will be interesting to see what the next update brings.
AP3 is really a very, very powerful tool and I liken it to the first and early releases of Final Cut in the video world. I remember lots and lots people complaining about performance with Final Cut - mostly it was the system setup, limited resources in the machine and not yet knowing the best work flow. I see the same trend on some of these threads with AP3.
No doubt in my mind Apple could have done a much better job of quality control here and I fear they bowed to pressures to release something early. For some the out of the box experience has been good for others not so much. I have no doubt they will get it right, but it doesn't help people having issues at the moment.
    Just my 2-cents.

  • The adjustment brush suddenly stopped working in Lr CC (among other things)

    1. All of a sudden the adjustment brush stopped working in my Lr CC. The little buttons that you can click on to activate your adjustments are gone and when I open files where I have done adjustments they are still there but no "buttons" to click and consequently I can not make any changes or new adjustments. For example; in the image I have inserted I have made adjustments with a) Sharpness, b) Skin Softening and c) Iris Enhance and the adjustments are still there but no "buttons" any more and therefore I can´t change anything. I edited this image April 29 and 30 when Lr still worked fine. Today (and yesterday) things has really start spooking around with Lr.
    2. After having saved an image in Ps CC as a psd-file going back to Lr CC for cropping Lr continuously reloads and resets all edits that I have done or are trying to do.
Everything has been working earlier but the past two days things like the above has stopped working.

Well, all problems regarding this are solved after having talked to Adobe's support. After having backed up my lrcat we deleted the Lightroom 6 plist, emptied the trash can and then restored Lightroom to its default values during the start-up process.

  • Aperture 3.6 brushes barely working

Can anyone tell me if they experienced the same problem? None of the brushes are working well. Example, I have skin softening selected, brush size ~55, softness 1, strength 1, radius 10, detail 0.75, and intensity 0.5, yet when I go over a section of a face I have to toggle M to see any difference, and even then it is so faint that it's barely noticeable. I tried blur with all settings to the max and, again, only notice it when I toggle between M, and then barely.

Ah, thanks. I guess I was just expecting too much, especially from blur.
    Hi Mike,
I suspect there is still something not right.  I took the time to do a partial gamut sample; it should give you an idea of what blur amounts should look like from 5 to 100, and what brush strengths look like, from 50% to 100%.
Are you sure the brush HUD is set the way I specified earlier?
