Skins in RoboHelp 7
Hello,
When I apply a skin from the Gallery (ex. XP Silver), after I
generate the file and view it, the TOC pane overlaps the Contents,
Index, Search and Glossary buttons. I'm viewing in IE7. Has anyone
else encountered this issue, and if so, have you found a way to get
it to appear correctly?
Thank you,
Michele
Just checked with IE and FF.
IE. Yes the back and forward buttons worked as you want.
FF. After opening the help, it doesn't build any history
while the spinning button is shown on the tab. Hit Escape to kill
that. Then navigate through some topics and it does cycle back
through. The first time I got a result more like you describe but I
haven't been able to repeat that. Also I found that I could not
open a book until I opened the book containing the default topic
and clicked another topic there.
Download the version of Customer Care on my site so that we
are singing off the same hymn sheet. It contains some late changes.
If you prefer to use what is installed, it shouldn't affect this
issue.

How to create customized skins in RoboHelp 9?
Hello,
I want to know, how can I remove the default Contents, Index, Search, Print and Glossary buttons from their default position and relocated them in the TOC box just below the toolbar or anywhere else in the skin of the generated output. I would also like to know that how can I replace the toolbar with images and customized text.
Any help on this is appreciated. Urgently need some help.
Thanks a lot.Welcome to the RH community.
I'm afraid that the position of the buttons can not be controlled in that they always appear at the top of the tri-pane navigation column. Maybe it would be possible to manually amend one of the skin's output files but I'm not an expert in this area. Maybe someone else could chime in here. The issue with this is that the change would need to be reapplied each time you generate the output as the change would be overwritten.
As for the toolbar images and text, these can be changed by editing the skin file. If you double click on the skin in the Project Setup pod a editor is opened. Just click on the relevant button in the Main area of the Toolbar section and change away.

I'm running into a problem with the customization of my skin for RoboHelp I've created all of my own custom tabs and have linked them to their own separate page. However, I'm limited to the number of tabs that I can have. Is there a set amount of tabs that you can display? Has anyone else run into this problem? Is there a work around?
ThanksHi there
I've seen it happen before. While there is no specified limitation, obviously there HAS to be some limitation.
Question here, are you using the "Search Input Field in Toolbar" option? If so, try disabling that and see if you can get more tabs to show. I seem to recall that the last time this issue cropped up on the forums (admittedly quite a while back) that we found in that particular case there was a limit of 13 tabs for the individual posting.

Greetings All!!
I've created a custom skin in RoboHelp 7, using images from a
skin within the gallery. When I generate and view the output, in
IE6, the Navigation Pane is not displayed. Any ideas on what I've
done wrong & how I can fix it? Thank you, Thank you!
PattiHi Patti,
The navigation seems to stop being shown where any element of
the skin is incorrect / inaccessible OR where the skin is not
selected for the output pj. I would recommend that the first place
to look is your single source layout dialog to see if it has been
selected (this is what i missed out when I had the same pblm for
about a week). About halfway down the first page in the Generate
Output wizard is a "Skin" group box, if the selection in the
drop-down says: "[Traditional Style - No Skin]" then you need to
select your skin here and re-generate.
Hope this is it!

Japanese characters in left pane
I have a project that has been translated into Japanese, and
the left pane of my FlashHelp system does not render the characters
correctly. The funny thing is that I got it to work in another
project that was translated, one that I think was built in X5 (or
possibly earlier) and has a skin that RoboHelp says should be
updated when I generate the output. I don't dare change it now, and
it seems to work fine.
Unfortunately, I didn't make a record of exactly how I got
that to work
, but I seem to remember it had to do with embedding
Japanese characters in the Flash skin files. Fonts are also
declared in the skin .fhs file and the accompanying XML file, and
I'm not sure how they interact, but it seems that the fonts in the
Flash files supercede those in the skin file.
In my newer project, the toolbar buttons show up in Japanese,
as do the "terms" and "definitions" headings in the glossary and
the index keyword prompt. It's the TOC entries, glossary terms, and
index terms that have the problem, and they are all driven by the
file skin_textnode.swf. As long as the other files are set to Arial
or Arial Unicode MS in Flash, they display Japanese correctly, even
if Japanese isn't embedded (using "anti-alias for animation").
Without Japanese embedded in skin_textnode.fla, I get this kind of
nonsense in the left pane:
検索ã™ã‚‹.
But with Japanese embedded, I get symbols like paragraph symbols,
plus-or-minus signs, and daggers. I have also saved the .hhc file
(the TOC) and the .hhk (index) in UTF-8 format using Notepad, but
no change there. The junk characters also show up in the overlaying
window when clicking a term in the index, and that's driven by
skin_index.fla. I've tried the font and character embedding with
that file. I have tried changing "font-family:Arial" in the skin
file to both "font:"Arial Unicode MS"" and "font:"Arial"". No
difference.
I have compared files with that earlier project. As far as I
can tell, I have done things comparably, but the junk characters
persist in the left pane. It doesn't appear that there are
substantial differences between the way the old and new skins are
executed to cause the Japanese to work in one and not the other.
Any ideas that may help me make this work again? I'm using RoboHelp
6, Windows XP SP2, IE 6. (In theory, making this work for Japanese
will also solve my problem for Russian. I'm hoping the language
capabilities of RH7 handle all of this better so I don't have to
use these work-arounds for non-Roman characters.)
I know this is a load of information, but I've tried to
describe the circumstances adequately without writing the great
American novel. I'll clarify anything that's needed. Thanks,
BenSolved: I found once more that the TOC, glossary, and index
information is pulled from files in the whxdata folder:
whtdata...xml, whgdata...xml, and whidata...xml, respectively,
which are all in UTF-8 format. The Japanese characters have to be
changed in these files, but they get overwritten during a build, so
they have to be stored with the correct characters in another
location. Fortunately, our glossary will probably not be changing,
but the TOC and index will grow as the project moves forward, so
this will take some babysitting.
This all leads me to wonder why RoboHelp generates copies of
the .glo, .hhk, and .hhc files into the output folder when it's the
XML files that are used instead... -
Import swf demo with Playbacks
Hi there,
I tried to import a swf demo I created with Captivate4 within
RoboHelpHTML6. The thing is that I want to see the playback command
so that I can stop and play the demo at will. This plaback is
created in a second skin file which is supposed to call the demo so
that both are displayed at the same time. So when I import this
skin in RoboHelp, the compiled file will show the playback but not
display the demo (white screen). This happens when I compile as
WebHelp or WebHelp Pro however it works fine when visualizing the
demo through the quick view icon or compiling through Microsoft
HTML Help. Is there anyone who can help me at solving this issue?
CheersHi AurelieS and welcome to our community
Take a look at the following link and see if it helps.
Hopefully it will. Additionally, I feel I should point this out in
order to avoid confusion. There is no Captivate 4. I think you must
be talking about Captivate 2, as it is the only version with the
skins.

Generate causes SCC Query Error: Unhandled exception
Hi folks,
I have Robohelp X5, I am composing on my local machine with
saves going to an RCS server. I've pretty much figured out that RCS
has a problem with the skins in Robohelp, because if I go to create
a custom skin, I can create it in a non-controlled project. The
second I go to create a custom skin in the controlled version, I
get an infinite loop of the SCCQueryError message, Unhandled
Exception Message Boxes. I have to kill Robohelp, and reboot to get
out of the error message.
Whenever I go to generate the verson controlled project, I
get at least six of these error messages, but the project is
generated and I can open it and can't seem to find anything
missing. So, even though I get the errors in a generate, they don't
affect the ability to generate a project.
I've already checked to be sure that the RCS server is
accepting all the file extensions.. that was my first thought was
that it didn't like the .swf extensions.
Anyone else have or see this problem?
Thanks!Thank you Eilsa... It's a touch complicated, but I am working
off my hard drive, and Robohelp is installed on my hard drive. The
webhelp file that is integrated with the project is being pushed to
the a folder on the development server where RCS resides, and my
project files are being archived in another directory on the RCS
version tracker.
I get the SCC query error (which seems to be an RCS version
tracker error) right after I generate either a local or server
webhelp, about six in all. So I'm thinking that there is some file
extension that RCS is blocking, because I don't get the errors when
I do the same thing with a non-version tracked project.
Forget about trying to create any skins.. (and this is on my
local, too) I have to switch to a non-version tracked project to
create the skins.
But just trying to see if anyone else has seen the
problem.. -
RH8 and RH Server 8 Assistance
Hi All,
We are currently using RoboHelp HTML 8 to create webhelp for Java-based web applications. We recently received new requirements from our stakeholders, and I'm wondering if anyone can help me with some of the specifics. We're hoping we can continue using RH8. Since my questions spread across Air/RH8 Server/RH8 HTML, I apologize if I posted in the wrong category.
Requirement 1: Track help usage. I'm assuming we could purchase RoboHelp Server 8, generate our webhelp in the same manner, and then just deploy the help to the RH Server rather than another server. Is this correct? And I'm assuming providing context-sensitive help (either by giving Map IDs to developers or using an XML file) would still be possible?
Requirement 2: Provide embedded help in the form of inline help, docking panes, bubbles, etc. Does RH8 offer any of this capability? I think this one is a long shot... I'm not aware of any other help authoring tool that provides this capability for webhelp.
Requirement 3: Provide an updated look, as we’ve had comments that the current Webhelp skin looks outdated. Would using the Adobe Air – Browser based Help output in place of the Webhelp output pose any challenges?
Requirement 4: The ability for other departments to reuse our content. Currently another department is using Joomla to create our knowledge base. Does anyone know of a way to import RH content into Joomla?
Thanks in advance for any insight you can provide.Hi, chrodgers
I'll take a crack at this:
Requirement 1: Track help usage. I'm assuming we could purchase RoboHelp Server 8, generate our webhelp in the same manner, and then just deploy the help to the RH Server rather than another server. Is this correct? And I'm assuming providing context-sensitive help (either by giving Map IDs to developers or using an XML file) would still be possible?
Yes, publishing your project as WebHelp Pro to the RoboHelp Server is virtually the same as you are doing now. Also there are CSH APIs that developers use (or use their own favorite methods) for calling topics using Map IDs or by URL.
Requirement 2: Provide embedded help in the form of inline help, docking panes, bubbles, etc. Does RH8 offer any of this capability? I think this one is a long shot... I'm not aware of any other help authoring tool that provides this capability for webhelp.
You are right that this is more of an "engineered" or programmed windowing operation that only the developer can control. Still, I imagine you can provide the HTML topics via WebHelp that appear in the custom panes, with a little plannng.
Requirement 3: Provide an updated look, as we’ve had comments that the current Webhelp skin looks outdated. Would using the Adobe Air – Browser based Help output in place of the Webhelp output pose any challenges?
Have you tried to create from scratch or modify the existing skins in the WebHelp skin editor? Like anything else aesthetic there's nothing like having a graphic designer to accommodate color schemes and branding requirements If they supply the design and graphic elements, it's fairly simple to assemble the parts using the WebHelp skin editor. Using Adobe AIR browser-based help would work if you use the "out of the box" templates and skins. RoboHelp does not (yet) have an AIR Help skin editor. So you would be limited to the ones provided. You might try generating AIR Help Browser Based to see if it fits your needs. It's real simple to find out! Understand that are a couple of features of true AIR Help ( installed.air file) that are not included in the browser-based version (favorites, commenting, etc.)
Requirement 4: The ability for other departments to reuse our content. Currently another department is using Joomla to create our knowledge base. Does anyone know of a way to import RH content into Joomla?
I don't know enough to comment except to say if the Joomla platform can display HTML, it should work.
Hope this helps.

RoboHelp 9/10 Java Error Trying to Compile AIR Help Skin
I'm trying to save a custom skin for a RoboHelp 9 project on a Windows 7 64-bit PC using AIR Browser Based Help. When I try to save the skin, or compile it into a SWF, I get the following error:
Error loading: C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.7.0_09\jre\bin\jvm.dll
The dll is located at that path. I tried running RoboHelp as Administrator. I tried editing a new skin with a new clean project and also with a downloaded trial of RoboHelp 10, and I got the same results. Has anyone seen this, or can anyone think of a fix?Hello hypericon_0090001,

RoboHelp 10 Skin Navigation Button - Link Open in New Window
I'm using RoboHelp 10 and am trying to get the button in my navigation skin to open a link in a new window. I researched this extensively and have not been able to get it to work. Can you please assist?
Is that link for some external website or some pdf file etc?
When you create a button on a skin and ask it open a file it should do that in the web browser.
If the link is for a website etc then it might give you the following link but you can still open the url in a new window by clicking on 'Open this content in a new window". -
Hello,
I want to apologize for asking what many others already know.
However, I'm new to a project that has had multiple authors
using different RoboHelp versions. In updating the projects in
RoboHelp 6, I'm trying to get them all to look the same. I'm trying
to get a custom skin to work for RoboHelp HTML (but the online help
seems to indicate WebHelp should be the SSL choice, since HTML was
not mentioned in the skins explanation).
My limited understanding of skins (couldn't get "the skinny
on skins to open" on IE because of the security patch) is that a
customized skin has to be saved outside of the skins folder to
prevent it being overwritten when a project is generated. But then
how does RoboHelp get the customized skin to use to generate the
project?
My questions are:
1. How do I get an HTML project to generate the .CHM using
the customized skin?
2. How can I view the .CHM in IE (because I created it on
this PC, there is no Unblock option for .CHM files), since I
believe the generated project Preview uses the default skin?
Thank you,
HALHi HAL
Skins only apply to the world of WebHelp. You cannot use them
with Microsoft HTML Help (.CHM) files.
You say you were unable to get the Skinny on Skins to open?
If so, I'm guessing it's because the file has been blocked. Did you
follow the instructions outlined
at
this link?
You say you want to view the .CHM in IE. .CHM files display
using the Windows HTML Help viewer. The viewer uses parts of IE for
its display. So you are actually using IE to view the .CHM.
Have you considered a class on RoboHelp? Contact me if you
are interested.

RoboHelp HTML Version 8 multiple skins in merged projects?
Hello,
Is it possible to brand different pages in a merged help project w/ different skins, or do you have to use only one skin for the entire project?
Thank you,
-JerodWelcome to our community
Skins are used to control the look and feel of the output created by Projects. That means all topics and not individual topics.
You could use CSS to control the way specific pages appear if you like. Perhaps that will help to differentiate them?

Hello Adobe community.
I have recently downloaded the trial version, and am familair with Robohelp and Madcap Flare.
My first puzzle, however, is when attempting to edit the skins an empty error dialog presents with no text to define the issue. After clicking Ok, the error dialogue disapears and an empty skins editor dialogue presents with nothing at all to view, except the buttons at the bottom of the window. I can click ok and the window closes. Clicking on any other button doesn't work.
Any help on this issue appreciated.
Cheers

You're using RoboHTML right? What kind of skin are you trying to edit? WebHelp, AirHelp, FlashHelp?
To be on the safe side: Is your project placed on a network location? If so, place the project on your local drive.
Can you create a new skin or doesn't that work either? Also, try creating a new blank project and add/modify a skin in that.

How to get skin in each page in adobe robohelp 8 in each page
If i right click and open a new page from the generated output in adobe robohelp 8 the skin is not there. Do we have any setting in it so that if can have skin in each page if i right click and open. Please sugges me what i can do here?
Hi there
And from the sidelines here, I'm a bit concerned about seeing multiple instances of the Show link. This seems to suggest that your source files may have been repeatedly overwritten with the output files. In the first image I saw the Show link three times.
When you edit your topics, do you see little red squares all over the place? If so, you have likely shot yourself in the foot.
Cheers... Rick
