Skipping on playback

I've imported about 3 minutes of video into iMovie HD and arranged the clips how I want them. There's no blank clips in between, but both audio and video are skipping on playback. I thought it was just in iMovie, but when I burned it to iDVD, it does the same thing when I playback on my DVD player. How do I smooth transitions from one clip to another? This was 3 minutes of continuous film exported from a Sony digital camcorder.

Cathy, it's not entirely clear from your note whether the playback problem occurs ONLY at the transitions or other places too. If only at the transitions, is it one particular kind of transition? Does the problem go away when you remove the transition?
• Can you export the iMovie project successfully to a Full Quality movie that plays as it should? If so, that may offer a solution. You could export the project to a Full Quality movie that you open and play in QuickTime Player. If it plays okay, then import that movie to a NEW iMovie project. It should continue to play fine. Then share the new project with iDVD.
• If the Full Quality export is okay, that may suggest that your iMac doesn't have the RAM it needs to work comfortably with this project. If your iMac has just 256 MB of RAM that may be the underlying problem. Although it may satisfy iMovie's official requirements it may not work well for all projects. You may want to consider adding more RAM. 256 MB is very, very small. Everything on your iMac will probably run better with more RAM.
• Have you added any iTunes songs to your iMovie project? Some songs can cause exactly the audio/video symptoms you describe. If you have added iTunes songs you may want to try replacing them with new copies you have burned to an Audio CD.
For that solution to work, it's crucial you first configure your iTunes preferences to burn the Audio CD correctly, as described here:

• Any iMovie project, regardless of length, can develop a stutter if it contains lots of audio clips. That problem is described here:

  • Zen X-Fi2 - Choppys/skipping video playback

+ Just wondering if anyone else has this issue?
I'll get choppy or out of sync sound with avi/divx etc (whatever format tv shows are recorded in).
I have only just upgraded the latest firmware and?haven't tried playing any videos again - although the firmware doesn't mention any video fixes....
Its strange - my (slowly dying) Zen Vision: M plays things perfectly but the X-Fi2 just doesn't cope.

    /Re: Zen X-Fi2 - Choppys/skipping video playback< Hi,
I was wondering, is the video playback also choppy? Because the X-Fi2 does have some limitations concerning the resolution and the bitrate of the video part of the file. If they are too high it will get choppy or doesn't play at all.
If it is just the sound that is choppy, I would have a look at the audio format. I read (www.formatoz.com) with these settings:?
video: AVI, mpeg-4 (Xvid) , resolution: 640x480 (or lower), bitrate:?768.
audio: mp3, bitrate doesn't really matter.
About the difference with your Vision: M , I also noticed that my old Zen Vision was a little less picky about the formats in the video... maybe that one had a stronger processor?

  • Song Skipping in Playback on Itunes

I am running v7.5 and my songs stutter and skip in playback on itunes. They are perfectly fine on my IPOD. I have read only items on the net about there being an issue with Quicktime but the solutions all refer to a much older version of QT. Anybody having this problem?

Make sure that you don't have the "shuffle" icon on below the iTunes source pane.

  • IPod Nano 4G Skips During Playback with Apple Lossless Songs

My iPod Nano 4th Generation has been consistently skipping a brief portion of music about every 5th Apple Lossless song during playback. I've been working unsuccessfully to resolve this issue with tech support and fixed the problem when I disabled the energy level setting in the playback menu. While this is a hit to battery life, the skipping no longer occurs. Hoping that this issue is permanently resolved in an upcoming software update.

    Hi,
I brought my ipod yesterday and had the exact same issue. it would skip certain songs frequently and was extremely frustrating. Im not sure if this is the case for all ipods (i have an ipod nano 16Gb 4th gen, with firmware 1.0.4), but i fixed my issue in a series of steps. Im not sure which exact part of my method did the job, but here it is:
    1. plugged it into iTunes and clicked "restore" under the tab "summary". WARNING: This will delete everything, and restore factory settings. im not sure if this is necessary, but youll need to delete the songs which skip anyway.
    2. pressed the eject button IN ITUNES (under "devices", and next to your ipod icon), ejecting the ipod. wait for the ipod to specify when it is ready for it to be unplugged. proceed to unplug said ipod.
    3. Choose the language of your ipod, and go into playback settings and (settings/playback or something) and turn OFF "shake" and "energy saver"
    4. Plug your ipod into your computer again and drag all the songs onto your ipod using itunes.
    5. after it has finished copying, WAIT until the ipod no longer says "synching", and until it says "connected"
    6. Press the eject button IN ITUNES (again, under devices, and next to your ipod icon)
    7. Eject when the ipod says it is ok to do so.
As i said, im not sure which part of the method did it for me, but i think it might be the way in which i was ejecting it. Before i was ejecting the ipod on my desktop. I think it is important to eject it using itunes. Anyway this fixed my ipod. Im not sure if it will do the same to yours, but if its making you very angry (to say the least) like it made me, its worth a try i guess. I would appreciate it if people let me know if this works.

  • Multi-room DVR Issues: Unable to locate hub, interrupted recording, skipping during playback

    Hi Guys,
I was wonderng if you could help me.   I have been a FIOS customer for many years and have a multi-room HD DVR and 2 HD set-top boxes.   I have always had some problems during playback on some recordings where the picture and sound will skip, but over the last several months some new problems have appeared.  Frequently during playback of recorded shows the recording will stop playing and I will get a message on the screen "unable to locate hub".  I then have to power off the STB, reboot and when I go to the dvr option I have to refresh the devices before connecting to the dvr again.  If this happens while a show is recording then the recording stops and then restarts causing the show to be split into 2 recordings.  Sometimes I get a message "You have reached maximum playback on DVR".  This really frustrating and I would like these issues resolved.   I have the older HD dvr, 1 new hd set-top box, and 1 old hd stb.   The playback issues happen on both hd stbs.  We don't usually watch shows on the dvr itself so I am not sure how it performs during playback.  1 other note that might help troubleshooting is that I can't seem to display the IMG in full screen on the dvr.
Thanks in advance for your help,
    Sincerely,
    Randy R.

You can only do 1 playback at a time UNLESS you are playing back from the DVR/HUB.  If you want to do 2 simultaneous play backs, one of them must be from the DVR.  I ran into this same message when my wife would watch a recorded program in one room and I would try to watch a recorded program in another room.  Fixed it by moving the DVR to one of the rooms where the conflict occured most often.  As for the "unable to locate hub" message.  This was a very common problem about a year ago, which was fixed with a software update. You need to check what version software is on all your boxes.

  • Check marks to skip song playback all checked.

The check box in front of the song title is used to skip some songs in playback. Somehow all the little boxes in front of the song titles got checked. Is there a way to uncheck them in a group or do I have to go through all 4000+ songs and uncheck them.
    Would appreciate any suggestions.

Running iTunes on my Mac, I have always selected a group of songs (or movies, or podcasts, or ...) then I would use the Ctrl+click (or right button click if you have a 2 button mouse). In the fly-out menu, I just hit the "check" or "uncheck" option to set or clear the checkbox for all the items I have selected.

  • ITunes has skips in playback for classical music

After importing a CD into iTunes, there seem to be skips in the playback. This only happens with my classical music CDs. I've tried changing import settings such as the encoder (from aac to aiff) and turning error correction on and off. It also happens when the songs are played using quicktime. Anyone know what the problem is and if there is a solution?
    Thanks!

    Thanks Dan Clark3,
Currently am ripping to the internal drive. I rip at 320 kpbs when using the AAC format, 16 bit when doing AIFF. Sample rates are 44.1. It's interesting that it doesn't happen with non-classical recordings. But, I tried ripping on another computer I own (powermac g4 running OS X 10.3.9 at the same rates and everything was fine. It must be the drive. I found out I cannot burn CDs anymore on this particular machine, so problem solved I guess.
I remember having this problem when I burned CDs of recordings I made in college. Always with the skipping sounds; but I chalked it up to the speed of the computer.
Let me know how if anything is fixed by ripping to the internal drive...

  • Imovie HD skipping during playback/preview

HELP! I'm editing a 32 GB movie in iMovie HD, During simple Playbacks / previews the movie is skipping and becomes impossible to view, (unless I scroll the timeline)
I'm working w/ a brand new G4 ibook w/ 512 and 60GB HD totally dedicated to this project.(this problem has beome progressively worse as the file gets bigger) Is it HD space I'm lacking or Power or memory? I'm prepared to turn in my laptop for a desktop just to finish this movie, will the imac 1.9 G5 w/ 160 HD solve my problem?

Hi Anna - welcome to the forum!
    1. The HD may be 60 GB, but how much AVAILABLE space do you have?
    2. For the size of your project, 512mb RAM is probably minimum - I think you should increase that to at least 750.
    3. The iBook is OK for iMovie projects generally (I sometimes use one also), but your project is extremely large - much larger than would be considered usual.
    4. I also use a large capacity external HD and that may be an option for you - maybe 200GB (formatted for Mac - (Mac OS Extended).
    4. Remember that if you intend making a DVD, that iDVD has a maximum size of 120 minutes, and yours is well over that.
Obviously a more powerful computer is better, but I would try adding RAM to your iBook before spending mega-dollars. Even on my desktop computer, a project as long as yours would begin to display similar problems to the one you are experiencing.
    Does this help?

  • Skipping Audio Playback of Raw AVCHD Files in PE7

I get constantly skipping/dropping audio when playing back AVCHD clips in PE7. These are pretty long takes imported from a Canon HF10 camera. The video seems to playback OK with no jitter/judder or dropouts.I have tried reducing the clip to a 3 minute length but audio still skips/drops every 3-5 seconds for a second or so. I rendered/exported a short test clip to a .wmv file and a 780p file and the audio playback is just fine on the rendered clip. I'm using a Vista 32 Dell 730 desktop with 4 gigs ram and 2.6 quadcore processor and all editing on internal Sata drives. I had the Pinnacle studio 12 editing package first but moved to PE7 due to freezes and crashes. Anybody got any ideas? Thanks!

For HD editing in PrPro, Adobe also recommends a RAID 0 (or similar) media disc. Both HD Audio & Video need a fast file transfer rate. Many get by without the RAID, but it has helped many others. Just a thought.
Also, if you have fewer than 3 internal HDD's, and some of the ones that you have are doing multiple duty, like OS/Programs, and then Project/Media/Scratch Disks, the stream can definitely be too slow to get both smooth Audio and Video.
How is your I/O sub-system set up? Number of HDD's, sizes, speed and controller type?

  • Rented Movies pause and skip during playback......................

I am running iTunes 9.2. The last three movies I have rented pause and then skip ahead 6 seconds during playback. Its like with compujter cannot keep up. It happens at ramdom times but happens often, sometimes two or three times a minute. All movies were completly downloaded before playback. Any suggestions?

I am having the same problem with purchased video content.
I am NOT a happy camper right now. I was really looking forward to purchasing a season pass for one of my favorite programs, but not until this is resolved
I also can't figure out how to play the itunes purchased videos directly in Quicktime. It used to be possible in preferences, but it looks like that feature is missing from this current version.

  • Songs skipping on playback

    Hi
Since I've updated to the latest Itunes update I have found that songs that i've download from Itunes when playing back on laptop, sound bar or burned to CD some of the songs are skipping/stuttering. I 'm sure on the update there was also an update to stop this but it doesn't seemed to have worked. Any suggestions please. Thanks

    Possible remedies:
Check that you have the most recent version of iTunes (12.1.1.4 - released Feb. 18).  The previous release (12.1.0.71) was widely reported to have significant playback issues, varying from "static" and stuttering to complete lack of output.  The 12.1.1.4 release seems to fix most of these issues, in some cases in conjunction with the points below.
Check the setting of Play Audio Using in Edit > Preferences > Playback (you'll have to restart iTunes for changes to take effect).  iTunes 12.1 sometimes defaults this to "Windows Audio Session" rather than "Direct Sound" where (for most users) the latter works better.  In some cases, the 64-bit version of 12.1.0.71 did not have the Direct Sound option available, particularly with Windows 8.
Check that you have the latest version of QuickTime (7.7.6) installed.  Several people have encountered issues if QuickTime is out of date or has not been installed.  This issue seems to affect Bluetooth audio devices though may not be exclusive to these.
There's an alternative installer here: iTunes 12.1.1 for Windows (64-bit — for older video cards) - some users have reported that installing this has addressed playback issues in the "standard" 64-bit version.  The "for older video cards" is a something a misnomer - like most prior "64-bit" releases of iTunes, this is a 32-bit application with a 64-bit installer.  The "standard" 64-bit version (12.1 and 12.1.1) is a full 64-bit application, but there appear to be a small number of possible incompatibilities between these and some 64-bit Windows systems.

  • Skipping during playback and skipping render

When i try to add multiple videos or a song to my motion project...sometimes the audio skips or wont play at all...and sometimes just playback with certain images causes "real time" to slow down. So i'll hit command r and it will render but sometimes it will skip a section? ANy know why its doing this and how to fix it?

Maybe, like Maynard, it don't like to work...
Seriously - it can also only render to the amount of RAM you have available...

  • Random Pauses and Skips in Playback

Apparently others are having a similar problem. I get random skips or pauses in songs on playback in the iPod; mostly, these pauses are minute hesitations that will grow more noticeable over time to the point of even skipping songs or just stop playing in the middle of one. This anomaly occurred in a 3G 40GB and my current color 60GB. Music totals about 28 GBs of mostly ripped Apple Lossless, 192 ACC, just a few mp3s and some purchased tunes. I do not believe this is a headphone issue, as it will "skip" regardless of headphones or cable connected even when the iPod is completely stationary. Playback of the same music, even streaming over Airtunes, reveals no skips in the "original" music in iTunes to which the iPod is connected and synced.
Restoring the iPod only lessens the severity of the pauses (and believe me this has been done many times). I have also deleted iTunes libraries, xml files and preferences, but none of this seems to make any difference. Both the iPod and iTunes source drives have gone through the disk maintenance of DiskWarrior, repair permissions (source drive) and so forth.
Occasionally, after Restoring and on the initial sync of the iPod, I get the error message "Cannot read from or write to this disk". The 60GB iPod is less than a month old and I shows no disk problems; the same problem occurred with the 40GB iPod. Occurs with both the USB2 and FW ports.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  • IPod skipping during playback

My iPod (G5 30GB) is usually working fine, but when I'm jogging with it it skips. Is this because of the vibration while jogging? Or maybe because of the heat? (it's tucked away in an inner pocket - nice and waterproof but gets pretty warm in there.) Either way, am I damaging the hard drive?

It is skipping because of the bouncing it is getting in your pocket. If you wear it on a case on a belt or hold it in your hand it will get less of a jostling and yes, over time, it can damage the hard drive. Since it is in your pocket I am assuming you don't look at it while you run. In that case you might want to look into purchasing a refurbished Nano from the Apple Online store for $49. No hard drive so bouncing won't hurt it.
