Skipping problems in 5.5

We have been using Audition 5.5 for over a year without issue until the last couple of months.  We use Audition to record two-hour programs, and without having made any changes to the computer (and our IT department has checked it for basic diagnostic issues, updated the BIOS, checked for viruses, etc.) it has been consistently been producing files that will skip terribly during playback.
At first it was dropping a lot of samples and causing the file to actually be shorter than the recording time (by about 2 - 3 minutes out of two hours).  After we checked the machine for viruses or other conflicts, I went through the troubleshooting document online and adjusted the latency setting (we only have MME available for the driver), as well as reset the temp folder as suggested.  It seemed to help to increase the latency to 300ms (making it shorter made the problem much worse).
After making those changes, we now have files that are the correct length, no detected dropped samples, but the skipping problem is still there -- so rather than missing samples it sounds like it is alternately speeding up and skipping over parts, although the timer on the player doesn't skip around in time at all.
Here's our system info:
Windows 7 Enterprise
Service Pack 1
Intel Pentium D CPU 3.40GHz
2.00 GB RAM
32 bit Operating System
43.5GB free storage space
Any help appreciated!  Is it possible that the RAM or the sound card are bad?
Thanks-
Erica

Your clue here is that changing the latency settings makes a considerable difference. On a system with a well-behaving disc drive, the latency setting really isn't too crucial until you get down to relatively small figures. This is pretty much down to the Hard Disk, I fear, especially if the system was also having trouble writing to it correctly (mistimed recording). This is pretty much prioritised when it's happening, and if the disc can't even cope with that, something's seriously getting in the way of it.
If you want to do an experiment to prove this, then get a SSD in an external carrier, connect it via a USB2 port and try recording to that, and see what happens then...
In an ideal situation, you'd have at least three separate drives in a DAW - one for the OS, one for all the temp files, and another one for work file storage. Working like this smooths the operation of everything quite considerably.
But as ryclark says, if you are trying to do this with a network drive, then all bets are off. And even though 2GB of RAM isn't exactly a lot, I don't think that either the RAM or your sound device is implicated in this. Audition's use of RAM isn't exactly heavy, after all.

  • Skipping problems on Satellite M645-S4050

    Hello,
I have a Satellite M645-S4050 and I I bought it in July of this year.
I've noticed that if there is something playing on my computer, whether music (on itunes) or a video, and the laptop is moved (even if the desk it's sitting on is bumped slightly or I put my elbow down too hard) it skips like the old walkmen used to. Once or twice it has even gotten stuck like a phonograph. I brought it in to where I bought it and the guy said that it was the way the new software was made in a lot of the faster hard drives and the only way to do anything would be to buy a more compact hard drive and transfer everything.
But I notice it getting worse and I am disinclined to believe him because the point of a laptop is to have a modile computer. I cannot even listen to music or play minesweeper in the car because the skipping is so bad it messes with how the computer functions. Is this true and is there anything I can do to fix it?
    Thanks,
    na

    Hi na,
I agree with as*** and if you have HDD protection utility, you should be able to reproduce this issue: Just move your notebook a little bit. You should notice this skipping problem again.
As far as I know in options of this tool, you can change the sensitivity. Choose a lower value, maybe it helps! :)

  • Quantum TV skipping problem fixed

Over the last few days the skipping problem seems to be resolved. At least it seems that Verizon listens to the customers unlike Comcast.

Wish I could agree. It was terrible last night while watching hockey on NESN on our Quantum box. Was doing the stutter-step about every five minutes. Tried reboot during one of the breaks between periods to no avail. I should have tried watching the recording instead of live but didn't think of it at the time.

  • Nano skipping problem solved? (songs skipping while playing)

Well, not "solved" per se, but there does seem to be some concensus on the cause of these skips...
True, the nano is solid-state storage, and will not skip due to the same root causes that hard drive models might skip.
HOWEVER, that does not mean that the nano does not skip due to other reasons.
People on this forum, as well as members of iLounge have reported skipping problems. Concensus is that it is the nano's incompatibility with LAME encoded MP3s (some say that it's only VBR, yet some say it is also with CBR tracks).
The symptoms are tracks that skip on the nano, but play perfectly fine in iTunes (or any other player for that matter). I've heard that the mini also has this problem, but I cannot confirm... I can confirm that it happens often on my nano...
I have a very large collection of LAME encoded MP3s, so re-encoding is not a reasonable option...
If you are experiencing these issues, please report them to Apple... We need a firmware fix for this...
Question: Does anyone know if Apple is already aware of this issue, and plans to fix it in the next firmware update?

If it's skipping in iTunes and your iPod, then it is likely you have a bad file...
While there is probably a way of knowing what encoder was used to encode a file, I don't know that off hand...
I know my files are all LAME encoded because I ripped them using LAME...

  • ITunes skipping problem - another user

This post is to let Apple know there is another user having an issue. I installed v7 and had a severe skipping problem but no lost music. I installed v7.0.1 and it reduced the issue but did not fix it. I have tried the recommendations from Apple (no plug ins, changed QuickTime sound out rate, increased volume, turned off sound enhancer, updated DirectX, updated sound card driver) to no avail.
I always install with anti-virus turned off and I am the administrator of my computer. My platform is a Dell Precision Workstation 340, pentium 4, 1.5 GB RAM, Windows XP Pro SP2. The sound card is Creative Sound Blaster Live Value (installed by Dell).

  • SKIP PROBLEM CLIPS WHILE CAPTURING

    HI there -
I'm doing a conform on a show that was shot using T.O.D TC and hence there are lots of nasty little TC breaks in some of the clips.
In AVID its possible to skip problem clips whilst batch capturing - is there a similar function in FCP ?
Thanks in advance for any help!
    Jonny

    Cheers Jerry
The TC breaks aren't in the clips themselves luckily - there just on the tape between some of the takes.
Unfortunately the offline-editors have used 'in' points too close to these breaks, so when FCP searches for a pre-roll point - it cant find it. I've set the pre-roll to 1 sec, but some clips are still causing problems.
Just would be useful if I could skip these clips whilst capturing and move on to the next one in the list, instead of stop starting the whole time.
    Thanks anyway

  • Home Sharing: Half loading and skipping problems

    Hello all
Firstly, thank you to those that are reading this with a view to helping, and to those that will, hopefully, reply.
I am looking at getting my iTunes library shared in my home. My current set up is simple: 2011 MBP, iPhones, iPad, all music on the MBP and all devices using the same iTunes account (although, there are different iCloud accounts on the devices, but I assume this is not a problem). All devices up-to-date. Approx 80GB of ripped/iTunes purchased music. The first thing I want to acheive is my iPhone having access to my music library so I can plug the phone into a dock and play what I want.
I believe I have set up Home Sharing correctly. When I use the Music app on any iOS device I can see the library on the MBP, but one of two things happens:
    - Mostly, the library half loads (exactly half, it quickly gets to half and stops), or
    - The library does eventually load but when i try to play a song it skips/cycles through every song without playing, until it comes to the end of the playlist/album
Both of the above seem to be reasonably common problems, with no solution.
As a troubleshoot, i set up the Remote app; this works flawlesly. I can control iTuines from an iPhone with no problems at all. "It just works." I therefore assume that I can mostly rule out router problems and me not setting things up properly.
So, the question: Is there a real solution to the above?
    Many thanks

  • Ipod 5g Song skipping problem

First posting on the forum so please bare with me.
I have recent updated my ipod firm ware to 1.1 since i purchased the radio head phones. It would seem since then and having read a number of other posting there may be a problem with this update. That said the other postings suggest turning off the album art which seems to fix the problem. Im not using this in the songs that have problems.
I have already reset and restored. both have not fixed the problem.
The only time the problem seems to go away is playing podcasts. Other wise every song or album plays for a random time then skips to the next track.
I also get a high pitch scratch as the music is playing and then skips to the next song..
    Can anyone help??????
Mini Mac   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

After hours of reloading it would seem to have solved the problem.
    Thansk for the help
Now i need to sale the radio ear phones on ebay.

  • Major Stopping/Skipping Problem With 30G Photo iPod

Hi all. I'll try to give the short version of my major iPod problems I've been having. It's been going on for a couple months straight now.
The first thing that started happening was, in the middle of playing a song, it would freeze, and then start skipping through of the rest of the tracks on that playlist or album. It would sometimes make a "whirring" sound when going from track to track without playing them. Sometimes, this process would start instead when trying to manually skip from one song to another...it would just start to skip through tracks. It had to be restarted a bunch of times, and none of these problems had been present in the 2 or so years previous I owned it. Eventually, it showed an "unhappy face" and nothing else could be done.
I brought it back to Best Buy, where I bought it, as it was still under warranty for another year. They sent the iPod back to Apple for repairs. The "repaired" iPod was back in my hands in about 3 weeks, and for a week or so worked perfectly. Then, it started having the skipping tracks problem again.
Not long there after, it started having more serious problems. It needed to be resetted very frequently. The skipping of tracks, the first warning sign, became the least of it's problems. It needed to be completely restored. The first time it was restored, it got through about 600-1000 of the 5800 songs on it, then stopped and said the restore failed.
Other times, it showed the dreaded "1418" message. Other times it had messages like these:
Attempting to copy to the disk “Andrew’s iPod” failed. An unknown error occurred (-69).
The iPod “Andrew’s iPod” cannot be synced. The disk could not be read from or written to.
The iPod “Andrew’s iPod” cannot be synced. The required file cannot be found.
Eventually, it synced correctly. But the problems continued, and over the course of two weeks it had to be completely restored about 3 or 4 times, although it would then work again perfectly fine for, like, an hour.
So I took it back in again. This time, Best Buy told me that I would be quickly sent back a "Refurb" unit (a refurbished iPod that someone else had returned, I guess and had then been fixed or what have you.)
After a few days, I got the refurb unit. It's not my old iPod, I could tell just by looking at the front and back. And, for about 2 weeks, it worked absolutely perfectly. It reloaded like a charm, and played completely fine. The battery life seemed a little iffy, but nothing crazy.
Then, yesterday, this iPod that *is not* the same iPod I returned as far as I can tell, is having THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM. Yesterday, in the middle of a song that I had played many times before, it froze, stopped, and started skipping songs. It needed to be reset, what else is new. So, I did, and got the "unhappy face" with the address of iPod support once again.
I'm really confused. What is the problem here? When I had my first unit returned, I figured perhaps the problem hadn't been addressed. But this doesn't even appear to be the same unit.
Could there be a problem with iTunes 7.1.1 with my iPod? For what it's worth, I followed the advice found online to try to find corrupted music files, and can't find any. When it had restore problems with the last unit, I checked to see if it was stopping on any particular song, and it was different every time. Even so, I erased those songs just in case.
Also, when it freezes and stops now (and with the old unit, for that matter) it was never the same song. And it was almost always on a song that had already been played many times, perfectly fine, many times before, and recently to boot. I've also played through almost every song through iTunes over the last couple months to check for any obvious problems, and never found any.
With over 5750 songs on my iPod, I don't know how I can possibly know with complete certainty if there's anything with a problem amongst them, although completely erasing my iPod library that until 2 months ago never had a problem is kind of a worst case scenario.
What on earth could be wrong with my iPod? It's currently plugged into an outlet, vacillating between the Apple symbol and the "unhappy face." Anyone have ANY ideas?!?!?

I wondered what a 'photo' iPod was. This forum is for the 5G video. I don't know how long an iPod is supposed to last. I think it is based on use and how roughly it is handled if it is a hard-drive model.
Maybe time for a new machine?

  • Skipping problem with ipod

I have another problem with my 30G ipod video. It skips certain songs, not entirely, but partway through. For instance, there is a song that it will play for 15 sec, and then skip to the next one. It is always the same songs and it skips at the same point in the song. However, if I scan through the song it will allow me to scan past the point where it would usually skip, and then play the rest of the song fine. There are at least two or three that it does this with, but there are undoubtedly more because I have not listened to nearly all the songs on it yet (I just uploaded them).
I have tried a few things, including restoring the ipod, deleting and reloading the problem songs, and resetting the ipod. The songs in question play with no problem in itunes.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

  • Itunes 7.0.1 skipping problem with audigy soundcard

Hi, I have an audigy se soundcard and running itunes 7.0.1. Whenever the cpu usage spikes (opening applications and loading animations on webpages) and I'm playing music in itunes, the music skips and cracks. I don't think it's issue with soundcard/driver cuz winamp works perfectly fine with no skips. I've tried changing audio pref (tried 8, 16, 24 bit and 32, 44.1 and 48 khz) in quicktime, all of which did't work. I don't want to change the process priority for itunes cuz i have to do it every time. Any ideas? This doesn't happen with onboard audio so it's really weird. I want to be able to use my soundcard. Thanks.

Did you try turning your hardware acceleration setting down? I was having the same problem with the previous version of iTunes and was advised to change my acceleration setting from "full" to "basic". If you want to try this, go to the control panel>sounds and audio devices>audio tab>sound playback advanced button>pull the acceleration lever down two notches from Full to basic. Restart itunes and see if that helps.

  • Mouse skipping problem when external display connnected

I recently purchased a Macbook, and I connect it to a Dell 3008 display using the mini DisplayPort to dual-link DVI adaptor. My issue is that when the Dell is connected and in use, the mouse pointer skips across the screen when I move it, like something is interrupting the input for a very brief period, and it's being interpolated wrongly when the input comes back.
The problem doesn't occur when the external display is disconnected, and it happens with wired USB, wireless USB and wireless Bluetooth mice.
No adjustment of mouse sensitivity options seems to fix it, and the interruption in the pointer movement seems to happen at semi regular intervals of between 5 and 10 seconds apart, although I can't be 100% sure.
Interestingly, it doesn't happen when I connect a lower resolution external display using the same adaptor. So it only happens at 2560x1600. I'm wondering if it's a problem with a hardware accelerated mouse cursor and the NVIDIA graphics driver.
Anyway, it's a real barrier to me using the Macbook, so hopefully someone has a solution.
    Thanks!

Same problem here: wireless MS Laser Mouse 6000, either a samsung or LG external display connected via mini adaptor. Have the MS intellipoint drivers installed. It began to happen about a fortnight ago, and seemed to coincide with the Java update 4/Bluetooth Firmware/ Safari update applied on 24/6. This may have been around the time I changed display preference to 'best performance', so could well be a graphics driver issue?
In my case, it tends to happen in certain spots on the screen, and the likelihood of a skip seems to depends on the speed I'm moving the pointer. Faster = more likely.
It's messing up my tanking in warcraft something terrible.

  • HELP!  iPod music skipping problem

Hi there! I am posting so I can get feedback on how I can better organize my music. First off, let me describe a problem that I am having on my iPod that I think is related to my iTunes library.
    - While using my iPod with Click Wheel, I have (for example the Black Eyed Peas)10 songs, and it skips over a bunch of them except maybe one or two. Now, when I use iTunes all of the 10 BEP songs are the library and I can play them on my PC. I don't understand why they play on the computer but not on my player.
I think it has something to do with the way I have my music organized. Here's how I generally do it:
    - In the Windows My Music folder, I seperate each artist by their name. In this folder I have each album separated. When I add a new album or artist into itunes, I keep the My Music/Artist folder open and have iTunes open behind it so I have the screens split. I then drag the songs I want into the iTunes library and they show up.
However, as I mentioned before I have songs on my iPod that skip even though the "appear" on the screen, they just can't find the song so it flashes to the next song etc.
Is there something that I am doing majorly wrong? What does the iTunes folder in the My Music folder do.
Should I be better organizing my songs? Also it seems I have a ton of duplicates!
    Please help!

Other can be Album Artwork, Notes, Contacts, Firmware etc. or (and this doesn't apply to the iPod Touch or iPhone which don't have the option to enabled for disk use), files that are on there if you are using the iPod as a removable storage device. If you feel that Other is being incorrectly reported then try restoring your iPod. Restoring will erase the iPod's hard drive, reload the software and put it back to default settings. Once the restore is complete follow the on screen instructions to name the iPod and automatically sync your songs and videos onto the fresh installation. Press Done and the iPod will appear in iTunes and start to sync. If you want to update manually or using selected playlists uncheck the box beside the sync automatically instruction and press Done, it will default to manual mode and you can choose whatever setting you like: Restoring iPod to factory settings with iTunes 7

  • Can someone help with my itunes song skipping problem?

I just got a new laptop and transfered all the songs successfully, downloaded the newest itunes and bought more songs from the itunes store and two days later, my songs started skipping. They aren't skipping as bad as i've read on the messages boards of other people, maybe one small skip in various songs.
    But...
Once I plug in my ipod to the usb port, will the skipping songs transfer onto my ipod and start making them skip as well? I checked my ipod and all the songs are ok, but I haven't attached my ipod since the songs started skipping.
Oh yeah...I've set Quicktime to safemode, I've read on these boards about switching to safemode...but nothing changed.
    What do you guys think?

Unless the problem is with the songs themselves, moving the songs to your iPod will not make them skip there. Before you sync the files in question you should play them with another medium (ie. "Windows Media Player"). This will help you pinpoint where the problem is.
