Skipping songs - AGAIN!

I purchased my 4th generation iPod a little over a year ago. About 7 months after I bought it, it started skipping random songs and eventually the hard drive crashed. Because it was still under warranty, I took it in and they replaced it with a refurbished iPod.
Now, less than 1 year later, I am having the SAME PROBLEM and am just waiting for the hard drive to crash again. I paid to extend my warranty for another 2 years because I had a feeling this wouldn't be the only problem that I had with it, but this is ridiculous!! Has anyone else had this problem?
To be honest, if & when this iPod dies, I'll get another refurbished one, simply because I have the warranty and I don't have to pay for it but that is the only reason. Apple won't ever be getting my money for another one of their products again. Re-uploading all 5000 songs more than twice in a little over a year? I'll pass.

iPod skipping
songs?
For those of you who get zero playtime from songs
(i.e. it doesn't even start the song before starting
the next one) try this:
Resetting the
iPod
and if that does not work, this:
Restoring the
iPod
For those of you whose songs are skipping after
getting partway through the song, two questions.
Did you rip these songs from CD's you own? If so,
try reripping the affected songs.
Are the songs that are skipping iTMS store files? If
so, we'd like to know the following, because there
may be a problem with the song file:
1.) Song Name, Album, and Artist
2.) iPod Model (iPod mini [4 gig or 6 gig], iPod Nano
[2 gig or 4 gig], iPod [size and generation])
3.) iPod firmware (this can be found under
Extras>About>Version)
Thanks,
JC
I wish you would stop posting this as a solution. It does not work.
I now have three iPods. Just picked up a Nano. On the Nano, the songs that skip on my other two iPods do not skip on the Nano.
I have restored and reset the other iPods a few times each. Both by USB connection and Firewire, just to make sure that it wasn't my connection.
There is a genuine problem here and resetting the device offers no solution.
It's Apple's problem to fix. This did not start occurring until they sent out a software update.

  • Playlist skipping songs half way through song

My iPod (touch 8GB) started made a "blip" sound only a few seconds through a song today and skipped to the next. Same thing again, a blip sound and skip to the next song. The iPod was kept in my fleece jacket pocket. I took it out and held it in my hand and it seemed fine but when I put it back into the pocket, it started skipping songs again. Is it sensitive to being upside down or moved around or was it simply a matter of a button being touched inadvertently? Apologies for stupid questions, I was an iPod virgin up until Christmas Day

  • ***New*** iTunes 7 skipping songs problem (2-3 seconds of play only)

    Hey all,
Long post here, but I hope you'll bear with me, as I reckon this is something of a new fault with iTunes 7.
Found a bug with iTunes 7 on my iPod Video which I don't see any references to from anyone else. (I presume I'm not alone, but I've Googled the **** out of this problem and no one else seems to specifically have it...)
Basically, with iTunes 6.0.5, all was well. For putting songs ONTO the iPod, I've been using Anapod Explorer for well over a year, again without any problems. (I don't usually keep much of a music library on the PC - it all gets stored on DVD-burned MP3 discs, so there is a backup, just not on the machine. For that reason, and for personal preferences with iTunes' own way of updating, I find Anapod's copy and paste approach to updating the iPod to be much handier.)
So, long story short, a few weeks ago I upgraded to iTunes 7. Left it a while longer than usual because I was burned by an earlier iPod software upgrade which stopped me from playing divx/xvid videos created using iPod Videora Converter - on that occassion, I had to pull the firmware BACK to what it was when I first got the iPod. Thankfully, whatever bug was in 1.1 in relation to home-created videos is no longer there, and 1.2 works perfectly well. The brightness feature is the main reason I risked changing the software again.
So you would have thought all would be well with the songs, then? Unfortunately not. iTunes 7, slick and all as it appears, seems to create a situation whereby, once I disconnect from iTunes, ALL songs suddenly only play for 1-3 seconds before STOPPING, with the 'playing' bar jumping all the way to the last second and holding there. Skip forward to the next song, and same thing!
This cannot be an issue in relation to Anapod, as it never affected iTunes seeing the songs updated to the iPod via that method before. What iTunes 7 does seem to have done, though, is prevent songs being played in the normal way by introducing this frustrating 'start, 3-seconds, stop' issue. It will eventually go to the next song after about 1-2 minutes of silence, and then the process repeats. Throughout all of this, the songs do play normally within iTunes 7(0.2) so it is not a hard drive or corrupt file problem.
I should say that this is not crucial or a desperate situation, as I've already found a way to fix it. Moving BACK to iTunes 6.0.5 (or any 6.x.x version) and playing a few songs within iTunes, and then disconnecting will miraculously return all the songs to the usual full playing ability.
Unfortunately for Apple, this means (for the second time in a year) that I cannot update to their latest release as it ruins the playability of my iPod. I would like the extra features in iTunes 7 (for playing songs on the computer - as I said I never used it for updating anyway), but this latest glitch means I'll be using the more stable and reliable 6 for some time to come.
What I'm curious from the good folks on the forums here is to see if any of you have heard of this exact problem until now, and if so, what solution anyone had to get around it (possibly including actually keeping iTunes 7!)
Thanks for the help. Sorry for the long post. It all seemed kind of necessary when I see so many posts about 'skipping songs' but never about 2-3 seconds worth of play (most usually say they get more than half way.)

I've update the subject of your post to more accurately reflect the issue.

  • If your ipod freezes, skips songs, and wont load, read this

ok, i have a 4th gen 40gb ipod which worked fine until i upgraded to itunes 5. now my ipod shows a folder with !, songs skip, and it freezes after 5 songs.disk mode didnt help either, as it didnt show up on my computer even though the ipod displayed do not disconnect. I found a fix for it. it sounds dangerous and crude, but it worked for me, and some other people. plug your ipod into your computer and it will say dont disconnect, and your comp probably will be locked up like normal until ipod loads, then take your ipod, and hit it on its side on a hard surface. do it while you hear the Hard drive spinning. NO JOKE. my ipod started working right after. however, the sound is really crappy now, but i was at least able to backup my files, and i'm going to use my warrenty to get a new one. the reason this works is beacuse somehoew the hd pin is out of place, and you can hear it clicking. hitting it will get it back in place. i know this sounds crazy, but trust me, it will stop skipping songs and freezing, and will appear on your computer. I warn you however, if you break your ipod doing this, dont blame me, i'm just saying this because it worked for me. give it a try if nothing else works. hope this helps. itunes 5 was really bad. anyone know where to get itunes 4.9, that was fine for me, and i had a separate podcasting program anyway.
    --Peace

    Hi Mark,
I tried entering the serial number onto the apple website, but it says my iPod had not been registered (although I have registered it!).
Anyway, I phoned apple support and they told me to go to depot.info.apple.com/ipod and fill in a service request. Unfortunately it said that my iPod is out of warranty, so I had to phone again to get them to update their records about the and they are sending out a service box in the next few days
I think I'm definately going to take out the applecare service now!

  • How do I program my third party keyboard to skip song in any application?

I have a microsoft keyboard, becuase unfortuantely I couldn't afford to buy the Apple one... The keyboard has function keys, number pad a pause/play button, mute, volume up and volume down. What's really annoying that it does not have a skip song key, or go back song key. I have tried to program it through system preferences, but that only works when I am in the itunes application. What I want to achieve is, for example, go into safari and press a particular function key and then it will skip the song that's playing or if I hold it down, fast forward. Just like you would do on the actual apple keyboard.
Is there anything I can do to do this?

With BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) accounts e-mail accounts are polled every 15 minutes for mail. If mail is found then it is pushed to the device. Then the mail account is polled every 3 minutes (for 5 cycles) for mail. If there is no mail found, then it will be polled again in 15 minutes.
Gmail and Yahoo! Mail have special agreements with RIM that allow the mail to be delivered instantly, thus the instantaneous push. If you want your mail instantly pushed then you would need to create a BlackBerry E-mail Account (via your carrier's BIS web site) then configure your mail account to forward the mail to the BlackBerry e-mail account.
For example, let's say you have T-Mobile. You could create an e-mail account called [email protected] Then you would configure your third-party e-mail account to forward any e-mails received to the [email protected] address. This way the messages would come through instantly. More information on this is here: Methods of Receiving E-mail on BlackBerry
The only other option would be to use a BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) or a Hosted BES provider (like MailStreet or ExchangeMyMail).

  • Why is the iTunes radio skipping songs repeatedly and it won't stop?

OK when I was listening to Itunes Radio I was in the top 50 pop chart and I skipped through a couple songs and it went crazy. It began to repeatedly skip song after song with out using your 6 skips. Also I left that chart and went to the alternative chart  and it did the same thing without doing anything. The only way I got it to stop for a couple minutes was bye turning off wifi and turn it back on using the IPhone 6 Plus.

    Try this.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
If that does not work, sign out of your account, restart your iPad and then sign in again. Settings>Store>Apple ID - tap your ID and sign out.
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Go back to Settings>Store and sign in again.

Tried to reset phone and it started working "once". Next time I tried to use the control center it didn't work again. Their needs to be some kind of a fix for this?

  • While playing music on my iphone 5, i am now unable to play, pause, or skip songs while my phone is locked. I can still change the volume and slide the scrub through songs.  This has always worked for me until now. I have not changed any settings

While playing music on my iphone 5, i am now unable to play, pause, or skip songs while my phone is locked. I can still change the volume and scrub through songs.  This has always worked for me until now. As far as i know, i have not changed any settings.  This is whle my phone is locked both on the slide up toolbar/menu interface and on the normal screen before i slide to unlock.

I skimmed through this very long post but from what I read, this sounds much more like a coverage issue with your network than a device issue.  I have not seen or heard of this issue before and I do not have this issue personnally and & I use the music app quite frequently while working in the yard.
The DND feature should not be a factor at all if you're sure it's turned off.  I always recommend restarting your phone by holding down the home button + the lock button for 10-12 seconds until the Apple logo appears.  Once the phone reboots, do a test to see if this has helped to resolve the issue.
If not, go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.  Then, test it out again.  Post back if neither of these solutions solve your issue.

  • Skipping songs and detection sorta solution

    hi there.
i dunno if this has been posted, but when your ipod starts skipping songs, just play pause and when it shows the pause icon (cuz it might freeze a little) then click play again and it will correct that problem. although it can happen next time you use your ipod.
also, i have the problem that lots of us have. the not recognition on pc. i thought my cable was damaged but i tried with a known good one, and same stuff. it says removable disk unit instead of Ipod on My pc. itunes does not reconize it and neither does updater. randomly, it does reconize it, but updater tells me that in order to use ipod, i must have it reformatted. but when i try to do that, it says it cant!!!
personally i think its a software issue that came with around september/november update. apple screwed up i believe.
anyway, i kinda have a temporary solution to this (can say it work on all of you guys but give it a try).
i own a 40gb 4gen not color display ipod, which i treat better than anything so it has not fallen down once. and i tried everything in apples troubleshoot says
well i uninstalled everything ipod related, and installed itunes and updater i was given when i got my ipod, thats itunes 4.7 and updater 2004 04 28. i made my ipod be detected again, but not always.
when updating around track 1100(or long time of connection) te ipod makes a barely audible click kinda noise, and stops updating.
i hope this **** ends up soon cuz ipods aint cheap. also some parts of the usb and firewire cables tear apart themselves. not big deal but that is not the high quality apple is used to give.
and thats a piece of my mind.

I've had these skipping and loading problems... I sent my iPod (4G 20GB black and white) to an apple store... Two months later I was enjoying the new iPod they'd sent me (seems that my iPod had a malfunctioning magnetic support recorder =X)

  • Major problem. ipod skipping songs continuously

I have a refurbished 160 gig ipod classic, purchased within the last month or so. I was listening on shuffle at work today, it suddenly started freezing at 0:00 of a song. So I closed the playlist and shuffled again, all was well. Well a while later, it started doing it again, only this time it freezes on 0:00 for a while, then skips to the next song. It's not just certain songs. If I close out the playlist and start over it will play for a while... but it will start doing it again. Is this a firmware issue, or is the device defective? Thanks

forgot to mention that when it's skipping songs, the hard drive continuously makes a clicking noise. If i'm understanding this right, the hard drive must be going out, but what's weird is songs will play if I close out and start again, but only for a while....
Also, could someone tell me how to get the ball rolling, as far as sending this thing back?

  • Bizarre problem when skipping songs

    Hi everyone,
first of all I apologize for my probably poor Engilsh, I'm Italian.
    I own an old I-Pod classic 30Gb (firmware 1.2.1).
It has always worked fine until some days ago.
It started behaving in the way I'm going to describe.
I always listen to my 15Gb of music in shuffle mode, often at the start or in the middle of a song I decide to skip to the next one, because I'm not in the mood to listen it or whatever.
In these few years, when the song I skipped before shows up again in the shuffle mode, it has always started back from the beginning.
Now, instead, the skipped songs always start from the point in which I decide to skip them.
I know, I'm not very clear. I'll try to be clearer with an example.
    - I listen to "Song number 1"
    - at 0:48 I decide to skip "Song number 1"
    - I shut off the I-Pod
    - I reset and restart the shuffle mode
    - "Song number 1" appears when it's its time and start from second 0:48 instead than from the beginning 0:00
The thing that amazes me is that it started doing that no more than a month ago.
Can you please help me shed some light on this issue? It is very annoing to have all these songs starting from a point in the middle or towards the end.
Thanks in advance for your time and attention.
    Best regards

    Hello Marqo,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
I am not entirely sure on this one, but I have a feeling, the "remember playback position" option may be ticked for your music files within iTunes. To change this, locate each file, right->click (control->click on a Mac) on it and choose "Get Info" from the Shortcut Menu. When the window pops up, head over to the Options tab. Make sure there is NO check mark next "Remember playback position." Then hit OK when you are finished. Then sync the updated changes to your iPod.
Again, I don't know if this is really the issue, or I am forgetting some other option that may be causing this, but at least it's a good place to start.
    Hope it helps.

  • My I Touch keeps skipping songs, these songs play on my i tunes but wont play on my i touch

My I Touch keeps skipping songs that I have downloaded onto it. These songs play on my I Tunes but wont play on my I Touch. At first it was just a few new songs at first but now its getting worse. Help!

Hello all - I had the same problem with my iPod Touch - The problem with mine was that it started happening when I added new music to my iPod Touch it started skipping most of the songs when I tried playing it in my car stereo, it would only play some songs but not all (my solution) - I back tracked and deleted ALL the NEW songs that I had added recently and after deleting ALL the new songs I tested my iPod Touch and it started working normal again so the problem wasn't the iPod Touch the problem was one or more of the new songs I added was corrupted and it was causing my iPod to skip most of the songs I tried to play - Nothing I tried was helping NOTHING - All you need to do is back track to all the songs you added recently and delete them until your iPod Touch starts functioning normal again...Hope this helps it sure helped me ;-)

  • Ipod mini skips songs

I have a 4g mini that started rapidly skipping song as soon as itunes updated to v6. I hoped v7 would fix it but not luck. I've tried restoring and it works for a little while but after about a week it starts again. It usually happens with purchased music only.

I just started having this problem too after I updated from version 4 of itunes to version 7 b/c it forced me to in order to purchase an album on the itunes store. I was able to play the entire album for a couple of weeks but now it starts to skip all the songs and even when I try to select it, it will not play (this occurs with other itunes purchased songs as well). Were you able to fix the issue? When I plug my ipod into the computer it says the software is up to date. I tried resetting it twice but it's still skipping. Help, anyone??

  • Zen Neeon - cracking band - skipping songs - highly disappointed in the quality of workmans

Has anyone had any problems with the "band" around the zen neeon cracking? It has not been dropped. It has been cared for like a newborn child and within -2 weeks it had a crack in it. Now, a couple of months later it has 3 cracks in it. My husband said the band was probably too tight to begin with and was cracking to relieve the pressure on itself. But of course I called warranty services and they say it is physical damage so it is my tough luck. This thing has been babied!!!! It is poor quality workmanship. All the kids in my daughter's class wanted one after they seen hers after Christmas. I specifically told her to tell them WE DO NOT RECCOMMEND THE ZEN NEEON!? I told her to show them what hers has done (the cracking) and suggest they might want to spend their money elsewhere. Now on top of all this, it has started going bonkers!? I created her some playlists, and they used to play fine. Now, it will play one or two, skip 3-4 of the songs, then go back to playing. It used to work fine. I told her we would delete them off, add them back on, and try that again. Has anyone else had this skipping song problem?HAS ANYONE ELSE HAD THIS PROBLEM OF THE BAND CRACKING?I wish I would have spent my money on an Ipod.Message Edited by bulldogmama on 03-0-200602:0 PM

I have!? There's a big crack in mine, and yes I've dropped it, but not nearly as hard to have caused a crack (I catch it by the headphone cord before it hits the ground XD)? My brother saw it, and he's like, "What the heck did you do?"? and I told him "nothing!"?Mine's been going nuts as well!?It just gives me trouble! Now this time, I hope this isn't a permanent problem, but today, I was listening to my Zen Neeon. I shut it off, put it away, and then later on in the day, went to listen to it. Turned it on. The "Creative" screen comes up, and FREEZES there. The lights that normally flash when the player is turned on do not appear,? just the "Creative" logo, and it FREEZES there. I reset it, and turn it back on, and it just keeps doing the same thing. I'm VERY disappointed with it. Not to mention I'm going to have to take the heat from my parents because they bought it for me. I wouldn't reccomend it to -anyone- ever!

  • Skipping songs halfway through

Recently, my 6-month-old 80 GB iPod has been skipping songs. The song will start playing and then, at some random point, it will stop and go to the next song. If I go back and fast forward through the song past the skipping point, it plays fine. However, if I fast forward to before the skipping point, it will most likely skip again at the same point. It happens with random songs at random points. Any suggestions or solutions?
    Message was edited by: gracefire

The iPod Classic seems to fail to play the occasional track that iTunes, and indeed earlier iPod's, are happy to play. There is probably some minor technical error in the internal structure of the file which is normally ignored by other playback software but causes the Classic to bail out.
Some users have suggested that completely removing all id3 tags and then replacing the information is often a solution. This can be achieved in iTunes by selecting an affected track, right/option clicking and using the option Convert id3 tags > None. Since some files may mistakenly have more than one tag you may need to repeat this action. Once you have confirmed that no tag is present you can replace the tag information using Convert id3 tags > V2.3 (I believe it is recommended to avoid using V2.4).
Personally I've have found files for which this solution doesn't work. In this case the workaround is either to re-rip the tracks or get iTunes to re-encode the file, e.g. convert AAC to MP3 or vice versa and sync the newly encoded file to the iPod instead. Because transcoding will cause a loss of fidelity you should keep your original file so that if a future iPod firmware resolves this issue you can put your original file back onto the iPod.
