Sky broadband and sure signal

Hi, My sure signal box was working fine and sudenly stopped working a couple of weeks ago. I have spoken to Vodafone who say they can not change the settings on my hub because it is a sky product. I have spoken to the sky helpdesk who say as my phone line and broadband are working fine it is an issue with the suresignal unit so they wont help. Clearly something has changed somewhere recently to cause this issue. I even purchaced a new sure signal unit to try to deal with the issue but to no avail. I have no idea what I need to do to fix this, some of the other chats talk about unlocking ports in the router but that makes me nervious. I was advised to look at www.portforwarding.com but the Sky SR02 router is not listed there and all the screenshots are windows based and I have a mac. Please help, I am in a mobile blackspot and its driving me crazy.

I have excatly the same issue no phone sugnal for 6 weeks now, neither Vodafone or SKY seem to be able to help me, did your issue ever get resolved and how?

  • Problems with Sky Broadband and Talk services in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire | 05 August 2015

If you live in Alfreton, Clay Cross North Carlton, Tickhill, Whitwell or Worksop we know you're having problems getting online and with making calls this evening.
The problem has been caused by a break in fibre cables near to Chesterfield town centre.
We're working with the local authorities to gain access to the site of the fault.
The latest news we have is that repair work is likely to start late this evening once access has been granted and it could carry on overnight tonight. We'll provide our next this update if we receive any news this evening.
Calls to emergency services are unaffected.
We're sorry for any inconvenience caused.

I want to cancel my broadband and Talk services only, keeping my Sky TV. First of all, is this possible?
Second of all, how do I go about this? I don't have a phone and I'm not calling on my mobile with those extortionate charges to be on hold for hours and for Sky to try and "resell" their services etc.
You can cancel your broadband and talk services and keep Sky TV but if you do this and don't have another provider lined up then you will be without both.
Calls to Sky are charged at local rate so if you have free minutes on your mobile with your network operator then calls to Sky are free as they would use these free minutes. Sky will only accept a cancellation by speaking the the account holder.

  • Vodafone Sure Signal problems

    Hi
Has anybody got Sure Signal working on BT Infinity? Mine works for 30 secs and then just recycles. I have searched on this forum and one poster has "solved" against this topic but with no answer to the problem. http://community.bt.com/t5/BB-in-Home/BT-Infinity-Port-Forwarding-and-Vodafone-Sure-Signal/m-p/61730
    Thanks for any help.

hi there.  after what i think is a total fluke, my sure signal box is working.  i got infinity on monday and sure signal today.  set sure signal up as pr instructions, and nothing.  after reading the internet i turned off my new hubs firewall, and set vpn to port clapping and still no bars.  thought that i would have to downgrade infinity back to normal broadband as my phone is my working life.  while on the phone to bt to downgrade, it came on, about 3 hours after i have set it all up.  when i spoke to vodafone, they said that it wouldn't work, the fact that infinity is pppoe and not pppoa being the problem.  anyway, baffled, but its on and working.  currently enjoying full five bars on an iphone 4, with 3g and everything.

  • Existing Sky Broadband Customer who wants to switc...

    Hello everyone,
I am currently using sky broadband and have been for roughly the last 12-18months (not sure on the exact number). I have grown increasingly tired with the poor performance of the broadband they supply so have decided to go for BT Infinity.
First of all I was hoping someone could explain to me how I'd switch providers and what it would entail?
Secondly I was hoping for some general feedback on BT Infinity from some of you guys. I'd love to know if you recommend it or not?
    Many thanks!
    Chris

hi there, I have just moved from Sky Unlimited to BT infinity option 2.
Speak to a BT sales person, number on website. They will talk you through everything you need to do.
You will need a MAC number from SKY, and SKY have really sharpened up on this. They used to be difficult handing it over, but now if you ask they will email it to you. You then forward that to the email addy of the salesperson at BT dealing with your call.
Diferences; It costs more money, be in no doubt. But as the old saying goes you get what you pay for. The speed in my case went from 8.4mb down / 1.6 mb up (from a package promising 20 mb) with severe slow downs at weekends.... to 81mb down and 19.6 mb up, with zero weekend slowdown.
I have also been told there will be a significant speed bump again late this year for no extra cost.

  • BT Broadband and MTU

    Hi folks,
To those forum users who are comfortable with tweeking their line connection, and have the knowledge to do so....I thought it worth a mention about MTU.
I know a lot of members tune MTU already, so if so, ignore this post, it's intended for those who don't know.
MTU is nothing new, it's always been around, and it's the Maximum Transmission Unit.
The MTU runs hand in hand with another system variable called RWIN, the Windows receive page file segment setup configuration.
MTU can be fine tuned, but RWIN cannot be fine tuned in Vista, it sets it dynamically, but it can be set in XP.
In broad terms MTU determines the "best" packet size for data transfer across a WAN, wide area network, and thus between you, your ISP and the net in general, depending on your latency.
Windows and router manufacturers often by default made any MTU setting the value of 1500.
Any Netgear routers that were set to run on Sky broadband and other ISPs, were given the same setup configuration, however when I came back to BT from Tiscali (TalkTalk), for which my connection was tuned, I noticed a higher degree of latency on the BT network than I'd previously had on Tiscali, for a similar throughput.
It was only when I started to look at tuning my connection again, that I found that the BT network ran significantly smoother using an MTU of 1458, rather than 1500.
I also set my XP machine to run with same, and a RWIN of 65535, the maximum size "potentially."
After making these changes my throughput increased from 94% to 100% testing on DSLreports.com, with very few packet acknowledgements and clearly a more spritely performance.
The 1458 MTU value has long been a BT recommendation for data transfer in the past, but whether it is a present recommendation in BTw's config.papers I don't know, frankly I couldn't be bothered to try and find if there were any "new" present day recommendations for IP datastream products.
It follows that the difference in throughput between 94% and 100%, is a good improvement, and would benefit those with "slower connections" and long lines....incidently my router has seen less CRC errors since doing it also, but I have no reason to suspect there's a correlation unless FEC is not as efficient as it should be.
It doesn't necessarily follow IT WILL BE THE SAME RESULT FOR YOU,  but if you feel confident in trying it, for those that can, it was worth it for me.
Feel free to share comments, I know a lot of folk on here have the skills and do line tweeks, but there is a majority that don't, that might like to try.....BUT
I TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANY CHANGES YOU MAKE TO YOUR SYSTEM, AND YOU GET IT WRONG, AND THEY CAUSE YOU GRIEF, AND NEITHER WILL BT, but for those that have the skills, feel free to try.
You can set MTU in your WAN setup, depending on router.
and you need a programme called DR.TCP to set the RWIN in XP, it's freely available, Google is your friend.
For those with home hubs there is an external link here:
USE IT AT YOUR OWN RISK, IF YOU ARE NOT SKILLED LEAVE IT ALONE.
    http://www.stevelarkins.freeuk.com/bthomehub_softwareupgrade.htm
I CAN NOT VOUCH FOR THE FILES ON THIS SITE, AND NEITHER DO I KNOW WHETHER THE LATEST HUB IS SUPPORTED BY THEM, I DON'T USE ONE, YOU NEED TO CHECK YOUR OWN HUB AND READ THE INFORMATION SUPPLIED ON THE SITE, AND AGAIN, IT NEEDS SKILL, IF YOU DON'T HAVE THE SKILLSET DON'T GO THERE.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

You change it from within Windows.
if you want to find out what MTU value is ok(no packet fragmentation), or be like some and set it to as close as to near max. as possible, open a command window and type, obviously the MTU value set will affect the result so if you've already changed it from 1500 to 1458, and try an MTU value of 1458 it will show fragmented packets 'packet needs to be fragmented'. You may want to do this first just to try out the value, some get it as near as possible but 1458 is pretty fine for most people here.
    ping www.bt.com -f -l {MTU value}
For Windows 7, you can look ar what your existing MTU is opening a command window(might save time for next command and open an elavated command window) and typing:-
    netsh interface ipv4 show subinterfaces
The standard MTU for Windows 7(and as I remember Vista) is 1500, you will get a list consisting of, Loopback Pseudo-Interface then, Local Area Connection if you are using an ethernet cable or Wireless Network if you are using wireless. If like me you have a few ports/devices you can easily tell which interface is being used by the amount of data it will show under the Bytes In/Bytes Out.
    If you wish, type:-
    ipconfig /all
for a more descriptive list(well in depth).
Then you can set your MTU by opening an elevated command window or if you've already opened one type. The command we will be using is netsh, like so(I take it's obvious what parameters represent the necessary information in this exercise).
netsh interface ipv4 set subinterface "Local Area Connection" mtu=1458 store=persistant
    or ir could be
netsh interface ipv4 set subinterface "Wireless Network Connection" mtu store=persistant
If you want to find out what this all means then it's very googable and pretty easy to understand, some go to the trouble of complex registery alterations, I do not know why but maybe there is some reason I am unaware of, this method seems to work perfectly and easily. It's a dead easy fix and results are good.

  • Mail Setup with Sky Broadband

I've recently switched to Sky Broadband and have to say it was quite painless.. except..
I've set up Mail with the smtp settings for Sky and now find that all my different email accounts use my sky email address when they're posted out.
eg - anything I send from my [email protected] account appears at the other end with the address as [email protected]
I selected the sky smptp server for each account, but didn't expect it to use my sky email address for each one. I did set up authentication which i've never had to do in the past so I'm guessing this might have something to do with it.

I found a solution on : www.skyuser.co.uk which is an independant forum for Sky users.
The problem is something to do wiuth Sky switching their mail to Google's servers. Skyuser are offering an alternative smtp to get round this problem, but another solution is to log in to your Sky email - go into mail settings and there's an option to select "reply using sent email address". You can add all your other email domain addresses there, which involves a quick verification process.

  • Vodafone Sure Signal and SKY Fibre Optic Broadband

Please help, I have had no Mobile Phone signal for over 6 weeks on four mobile phones at home (which we pay over £150 a month for!) including my two teenage daughters phones who are beside themselves!!My Vodafone sure signal box was working fine (for past two years or more)but stopped working when we switched to SKY Fibre optic broadband from regular SKY broadband I have spoken to Vodafone and SKY for many many hours but still no signal. I'm tempted to ditch both SKY and Vodafone and start fresh with BT!!, this would be such a shame as been with both companies for over 15 years now I have no idea what I need to do to fix this, we have tried Port Forwarding but still no signal. Please help, I am in a mobile blackspot and its driving me cand the family mad.

Although not specifically about Sky Fibre, this (although a bit technical) is an interesting read (in particular the post at 21-Oct-14 10:41:23 advising to de-register the SS via the VF website, wait 30 mins then re-register the SS using a different postcode and if no luck contact VF and ask them to reset the SS from their end). For what it's worth, the Three Home Signal Box works fine over Sky Fibre without any port forwarding or any nonsense - just plug and go - worth knowing if you should decide to switch mobile providers!

  • My iMac and Netgear Router from Sky Broadband are having problems

Hi, I've got a fair amount of knowledge in these area's. I not long switched to Sky Broadband a couple of weeks ago. The problem lies with the connection to the router that they supply for their service, a Netgear DG834GT. The problem is that my connection to the 802.11g network is extremely slow.
My iMac, even tested in the same room shows 20-30% signal. This compared 2 a Windows Vista laptop at 5bars and top speed downstairs, and two PC's (XP) either end of the house with the same normal signal quality.
Contacting Sky Broadband, they assume that the fault is with the iMac and are state that they can't really help because I am not using a wireless adapter supplied by them (If it's even compatible).
Does anyone know the solution to this? I've heard of many other users with similar problems on different Mac's but no-one seems to have a fix.
Also running bootcamp, ive found my signal strenth to me maximum, but my speed to still remain at 22Mb/s peak, and roughly 1-2Mb/s when browsing the internet.
Lastly I have WPA-PSK enabled, and i've tried adjusting wireless channels without having any luck improving the signal. I would be gratefull if anyone knew any ways to fix this problem, thanks

Buy the Wireless N adapter from Apple and install it. Even though the only specified effect is adding the N router capability, it fixes the problem you mentioned (worked like a charm for my friend).

  • HT1515 Can I use Air Port express as a signal extender for SKY Broadband router in UK?

Can I use Air Port express as a signal extender for SKY Broadband router in UK?

You are going to have to turn OFF Wifi on the Sky router device so its just a modem.
String an Ethernet cable off of the Sky router to an Apple Airport/Time Capsule device and have that create a stable WiFi network.
Using WDS protocols you can now add additional Apple Airport expresses as needs be to extend the Wifi signal area.
In theory you should able to extend an existing network however inter-operability between differing manufacturers is flaky at best.
Caveat using extenders Will degrade the performance of your network.
So its going to be more expensive - Need Two Airport devices and you my need support in creating the network (you may have to log in to the Sky provided routers advanced settings in the Java Control Panel and from a web browser to turn off features such as Wifi and IP addressing)
You may be better contacting Sky as they may actually have a compatible network extender (BT certainly do for their Home Broadband routers) available.

  • Sky broadband, airport extreme and extending the wireless network.

Hi - I am a recent apple convert and as such new to all things mac. My current setup is sky broadband, net gear router, w7 notebook, ipad2 and mac mini. My mac mini is in the studio at the bottom of the Garden and currently has no signal. I am trying to extend the signal using an airport extreme but keep falling at the first hurdle. Connecting the sky router by Ethernet to Airport and trying to setup via utility has got me stumped, the unit just flashes orange. In essence what I am trying to achieve is a network off the sky router through airport that enables all my units to work wirelessly and attach a wireless printer and USB hard drive. Is this going to be achievable or have I wasted my money on the airport extreme unit?
Any help or guidance greatly received.
    Thanks
    AdeP

Hi - thanks for your reply. I have my sky (netgear) broadband router connected to the telephone/broadband point. I have then attached an ethernet cable from the router to the wan port on the back of the airport extreme. When I log into the airport utility it recognises the AEB but it just flashes orange which is where I am stuck.
You mean the Netgear is a broadband modem and router?  If that is the case try disabling the Sky broadband router function as it is not compatible with the AEB. If your router is a wireless router, you will have to disable this function then see if you can connect. If your modem is separate from the router, you have to connect directly to the ethernet port of the modem and skip the Netgear router all together.

  • IPhone and Sky Broadband

    Hey all.
When I first got my iPhone I was using Orange broadband, 2Mb and it worked great, a month ago I changed to Sky broadband 8Mb. On my mac it works great, most times I get around 700kb download.
While web browsing is speedy enough on the iPhone, trying to use the wifi store is poor, first of all the songs just wont preview for me, I get a second of the music then the warning box stating it can't preview the song. Then just there now I tried to download a song and it was downloading at around 5kb/s so I restarted the iPhone and tried again and it speed up only to crawl for the last few kilobytes.
This speed drop is present even when there are no other devices connected to my network, so I can't understand why. I'm sure it's a sky problem but just wanted to ask if anyone else has the same set up and maybe problem.

If I send via email from either iPhone or iPad it seems like it has sent but it doesn't. If I send via text message from iPhone it says message failed to send and won't send again no matter how many times I try

  • TS1398 have been connected to my wireless network using a netgear sky broadband router succesfully for a few weeks, suddenly can't connect, network is showing but no signal - all other wireless gadgets are connected just fine - including iphone - any idea

my ipad 4 has been connected to my wireless network using a netgear sky broadband router succesfully for a few weeks, suddenly can't connect, network is showing but no signal - all other wireless gadgets are connected just fine - including iphone - any ideas?

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

  • Why don't they put how much usage each update will take.  I am on broadband and not sure if I have enough GBs left to do an update.

I have broadband and it just cost me $75 OVER my monthly bill to download Yosemite and the update for iphotos.  NOW, I have notice that it needs two more updates.  Why don't they tell us how much data will be used with an update so we can plan when and which updates to do now, and some later?  The old system they had, they did tell and I was able to ration out which ones to update over the months.

It all depends on how much you'll use the iPhone for internet access. Personally, I use it frequently (work email, browsing with Safari, the Amazon.com app, etc.,) and I use 200-300 MB per month. My wife does not use her iPhone for much outside of email, weather, etc., occasional Internet browsing, and she uses 40-50 MB per month. So, you should be fine with 150 MB.
    Hope that helps...

  • Vodafone Sure Signal problem due to BT stability

Just a quick post to help any Vodafone Sure Signal users who are struggling to make calls.
There are major compatibility issues between SS and the various BT hubs. Go to the vodafone forum to see how many people are struggling to make calls and many suggestions on what to do. I am surprised no one has started a 'class action' against Vodafone!
This post relates to a different problem as I am one of the lucky ones who has managed to get the hub & SS talking to each other properly.
I recently returned from holiday to find that my Sure Signal wouldn't work at all. Classic problem all three lights on but no calls in or out. Tech support sorted it out and it started working --- well sort of!
However over half the time I just got a beep when trying to make a call and never received incoming calls. Anyway after a lot of investigations I noticed that stability of the 'Ping' (latency) on the line was absolutely awful. It didn't affect browsing too much but clearly the SS is very susceptible to lost packets and long ping times.
Spoke with BT Tech Experts who asked me to monitor and report back to them.
I found a piece of software that automates the ping testing called surprise surprise Ping Tester see   www  pingtester.net You can run it in eval mode.
I set it to ping Google every hour for 1000 seconds and found that about 8% of the pings were getting lost and that a considerable amount of the time the ping was over 200ms.
Monitoring started on a Saturday but I didnt start recording the info till Sunday. Then miraculously on Monday morning some time after 9.17 am on Monday the problem went away. (8% lost pings to zero) I suspect that a BT engineer reset something but have no proof of this.
Anyway the problem has gone away for now. See below for actual results. The records for 10 am - 1.00 pm are missing because I left the spreadsheet open and ping tester couldn't write to the file.
I am continuing to monitor the ping and have noticed occasional deteriorations for a couple of hours but so far it has always returned to zero lost pings.

I assume that the Vodaphone box connects via an Ethernet cable?
Which port do you have it plugged into, as there are issues with the Gigabit ports, where packets are lost due to auto-negotiation issues on the Ethernet link.
The Ethernet link pulses on some hardware devices, get corrupted, causing the Gigabit ports to keep swapping between 1Gb and 100Mb, this results in packet loss.
This can be overcome on a computer, by setting the network card to 1Gb Full Duplex, and not Auto Negotiate.
I doubt that this option is available on the Vodaphone device.
