Sky Broadband with OS 8.6

Hi all, hope someone can help because I've run out of things to try!
My mum is using my old iMac G3 (333MHz) running OS 8.6. It still works fine, and she goes online via dialup. However, she's just signed up for the Sky TV deal which includes free broadband and a free router. Sky say this can't be used with any Mac OS before 10, but I insisted that it should work with 8.6 if we knew what we were doing (which I thought I did!)
Anyway, it DOESN'T work, and I suspect the cause might just be that the ethernet port on the iMac is broken (it's never been used before) but before giving up and telling her she has to either get a new computer or stick with dialup, I'm hoping to rule out all other possible causes. I've read back through this forum and spent a while googling, and although this did produce a few more things to try, none of them worked.
Facts:
1. The broadband connection itself is fine - my iBook works seamlessly with it, both when connected directly with ethernet cable, and when connected wirelessly.
2. The reason I think it's a physical problem is that the light on the router which lights up when a computer is connected doesn't come on when the old iMac is connected, but it DOES come on if I connect my iBook directly. (The odd thing is that it DID come on the very first time I connected the iMac, but it hasn't since.)
3. I've tried replacing the cable with one that I know works (and all the obvious stuff such as trying it the other way round and trying all the other ports on the router) - same result. Broadband fine with new iBook, nothing with old iMac. (And it's definitely not a crossover cable.)
4. If I try to force the iMac to go online (to set the time etc.) it doesn't work, and the IP address that is assigned is the dreaded 169.254.xxx.yyy - this was the case after all the things I tried.
5. Trying to go directly to 192.168.0.1 or 17.149.160.49 doesn't work either.
6. The TCP/IP panel is set to Ethernet, Using DHCP server, everything else automatic except that "load only when needed" is unchecked. The configurations are definitely saved and active.
7. The System Folder does have MacTCP DNR loose in it, and enabled. ObjectSupportLib is not on the computer (I used 8.6 for years and was very used to deleting it after every OS update!
There you go. If anyone has a brainwave that might be able to get my mum online, I'd be VERY grateful to hear it. Thank you very much in advance.

In an arrangement with a Router, there is no reason why Mac OS 8 and 9 should not be supported, except that ISPs do not want to train their people for it.
One possible difference is that your iBook may adapt to use either straight or cross cable, while the iMac needs the right one (straight in this case):
42717- Apple products that require an Ethernet crossover cable
Read carefully, the table is products that do NOT ever require a crossover cable, such as certain iBooks (like yours?).
The quick way to check for straight vs cross cable is to compare the color codes of the tiny wires, by peering through the \[non-clip] side of the connector. A straight cable has the same colors in the same order at each end. A cross cable has two pairs swapped with each other.

  • Can't extend network with Airport Express on Sky Broadband

    Hello,
I'm having some difficulty that's driving me bananas!
I've recently moved house and got Sky Broadband. They sent me their Sagemcom router and the setup was easy. I thought I'd do what I always do. I'll connect my Time Machine to it via ethernet, and connect via Time Machine's network. Then I have two Airport Expresses in the house to extend the network and use Airplay etc.
I can set up the Expresses with no problem, everything talks to everything without a problem and the lights are all green  but the network isn't getting extended with either of them. I refuse to believe they're both broken as I also borrowed an Express form my Dad's house (which extend the network without a problem) and it doesn't work with me.
Extend my network is checked in the Manual Setup in Airport Utility but for the life of me I can't get my network extended.
I have done tests where I replaced Time Machine and made one of the Expresses the main base station and it throws signal out easily like that but I can't extend that network with the second Express.
I followed this thread https://discussions.apple.com/message/13171691?messageID=13171691 and have tried a few things to no avail. Currently I have configured an old Airport Extreme (just to keep testing) which works great and have set up an Express wirelessly. All lights are green and the settings seem to all be correct. I turn wifi off on my computer and connect to my computer from the Express using ethernet and nothing. Should I get a connection like this?
Is it Sky? I have read in a few places that Sky have disabled the ability to extend their network but I'm not eve using the signal from their box.
Any ideas or thoughts will be gratefully received.
    Thanks in advance.

OK so I've been tying it out but unfortunately to no success. Everything looks fine and all lights are green but the network isn't getting extended - just as before.
    Click the Wireless tab
Wireless Mode = Extend a wireless network
Wireless Network Name = Same name as the Time Capsule network
Check Mark next to Allow Wireless Clients
I don't have an option to extend a network, only to join: http://flic.kr/p/a222kR
I do get the option though if I use the guided setup, even though it doesn't work: http://flic.kr/p/a24TQQ
I did try one other thing though. I set up the Time Capsule and it works great. Then I tried instead, to use my Airport Extreme to extend the network. The Extreme did give me an option to extend the network in the drop down menu and a checkbox to Allow Wireless Clients, unlike the Express. I do believe that this is now working. I now need to find the best place to put it to extend the range.
My Expresses are only 802.11g so they're pretty old but as I said, it worked at my Dad's house but not here. Does it make a difference that the Airport Base Station at my Dad's house is an older UFO shaped Snow Airport? I'm becoming suspicious that seeing as I've only ever lived in small houses and apartments that maybe they never worked?? I've recently moved into a more spacious house so could this be the problem?
One final test using iStumbler showed that it could see Apple Network XXXXxX until I configured it. Once it was configured it disappeared from iStumbler. The Airport ID number had gone from the list.
Do I need newer n compatible Airport Expresses then? So many questions pop up now... When I turned my Express into the base station (which only throws out a g network) then surely I should be able to extend to the next Express (which is also g only)? It still didn't work. The Express are on version 6.3 by the way. Having the Extreme extend the network is a good start but I also need the others to work too. Do you think I'm correct in my assumption?
How about WDS, could that work? Will WDS slow the network considerably?
Sorry if this message is rather long and garbled and again, thanks for your interest and advice.

  • IPhone not working with my Sky Broadband wireless network!! Please help!!

I've just migrated from Tiscali to Sky Broadband, the iPhone worked perfectly with Tiscali but it won't with Sky across the wireless network. I set the new router up (it takes only minutes), and I easily got both iMacs in the house up and running in no time at all. But when I head into the Wi-Fi menu on both my iPhone and my parent's iPod Touch, it keeps saying "Unable to connect". It offers no explanation why, but the network key Sky gives you on a little card (it's either WEP or WPA) is what I am going off to enter the details. I've even tried to manually type the SSID instead of it searching for it, but even that's a no-go. Can anyone help me? I just have no idea what could be doing it. If both Macs work fine, and both Xbox 360s... I don't see why the iPhone shouldn't.

I've got it working now, I had tried the caps before and it didn't work... just tried it again now and it's come on. Weird. Anyway thanks for the help

  • Mail Setup with Sky Broadband

I've recently switched to Sky Broadband and have to say it was quite painless.. except..
I've set up Mail with the smtp settings for Sky and now find that all my different email accounts use my sky email address when they're posted out.
eg - anything I send from my [email protected] account appears at the other end with the address as [email protected]
I selected the sky smptp server for each account, but didn't expect it to use my sky email address for each one. I did set up authentication which i've never had to do in the past so I'm guessing this might have something to do with it.

I found a solution on : www.skyuser.co.uk which is an independant forum for Sky users.
The problem is something to do wiuth Sky switching their mail to Google's servers. Skyuser are offering an alternative smtp to get round this problem, but another solution is to log in to your Sky email - go into mail settings and there's an option to select "reply using sent email address". You can add all your other email domain addresses there, which involves a quick verification process.

  • WRVS4400N with Sky Broadband router

    Hi
I recently purchased WRVS4400N.  Though I am having problems trying to configure the WRVS4400N to work with my ISP's (Sky Broadband) router which in essence is a customised Netgear router.
Basically I want the WRVS4400N to handle all networking aspects such as WiFi, DHCP etc and for the ISP's supplied router to handle just the internet connection.  So far I have switched the ISP's WiFi off, turned off DHCP though unable to get the correct setting on the WRVS4400N to use just the internet connection.  Any help with trying to set this up would be good ?
    Thanks
    Andrew

I believe that the WRVS4400N router is one of the latest high end wireless router from Linksys, it has Wireless N capability, DHCP, and VPN. If you just want to use this router for DHCP and Wireless, you can just use the default settings in which DHCP and Wireless were enable by default. I also remeber that the default IP address of this router is 192.168.1.1 in which you can be able to access the configuration page for settings modification.

  • TS1398 I have gone with Sky broadband today. My iphone connected fine. Then I got an email through & my phone screen froze so I had to switch it off then on again. Since doing this, when I try to reconnect to my router, it won't accept the password saying

I was connected to Sky broadband til my iphone froze. I had to switch it off & back on. Since then it keeps telling me that the password is incorrect when I know it isn't? What do I do?

Enter the correct credentials for the Wi-Fi.
    Power cycle the Wi-Fi router
Forget the network and try again.

  • Connecting via airport to Sky broadband

Has anybody had any problems connecting to Sky broadband via their built in airport?
When I try to connect my iMac I am unable to do so unless I use a cable direct into the router. The message that I recieve is cannot find PPPoE host.
I have tried contacting Sky and they can only tell me that there is a problem with my mac which I know their isn't.
I would be very grateful if anybody can help

yes - i have the exact same problem - have been plugged in directly for 2 years now - cannot do wireless. I am moving soon - hope I can get router next to Mac lol

  • Am I able to connect my Airport Extreme direct to my Sky Broadband?

I have Sky Broadband which comes with it's very own router - but I connect my Airport Extreme to this router and use my Airport Extreme for my wireless network.
Reason why I want to know is because I need to Forward Ports on my AE but it is conflicting, and apparently it's because I am in Bridge mode.

    Hmm,
    Well I followed this -> http://www.skyuser.co.uk/forum/sky-broadband-tutorial-section/10975-how-set-up-p ort-forwarding-internal-web-server.html
but guessing it's maybe not exact to what I need to do.
Basically I am running Daylite Server and I need to forward ports to allow me to access my Daylite database away from the network.
According to the Daylite folk, I need to have this information:

  • Existing Sky Broadband Customer who wants to switc...

    Hello everyone,
I am currently using sky broadband and have been for roughly the last 12-18months (not sure on the exact number). I have grown increasingly tired with the poor performance of the broadband they supply so have decided to go for BT Infinity.
First of all I was hoping someone could explain to me how I'd switch providers and what it would entail?
Secondly I was hoping for some general feedback on BT Infinity from some of you guys. I'd love to know if you recommend it or not?
    Many thanks!
    Chris

hi there, I have just moved from Sky Unlimited to BT infinity option 2.
Speak to a BT sales person, number on website. They will talk you through everything you need to do.
You will need a MAC number from SKY, and SKY have really sharpened up on this. They used to be difficult handing it over, but now if you ask they will email it to you. You then forward that to the email addy of the salesperson at BT dealing with your call.
Diferences; It costs more money, be in no doubt. But as the old saying goes you get what you pay for. The speed in my case went from 8.4mb down / 1.6 mb up (from a package promising 20 mb) with severe slow downs at weekends.... to 81mb down and 19.6 mb up, with zero weekend slowdown.
I have also been told there will be a significant speed bump again late this year for no extra cost.

  • Sky broadband not supported by PSP

Hi, I am trying to connect our PSP to the sky broadband but it keeps saying unsupported even though it's 100%. I've had a look at the other discussions on here with the same issue but non of the links work for me and I don't know how to change the settings either on the router or PSP.
    Please can someone help.

I would guess that you are having wireless compatibility problems. You router is probably set to WPA2 which your PSP does not support. To check this go into your route's wireless settings and disable the Security.
    1. Open the router settings byu typing 192.168.0.1 in a browser address bar.
    2. Click the wireless link in the menu bar and put in the username - admin and password sky.
    3. Untick where it says Enable Security.
    4. Reboot the router and try to connect the PSP. (your network should now be shown as unprotected)If it connects you know your problem so you will have to find the highest security mode supported by the PSP. Do not run for a long time without wireless security.

  • My iMac and Netgear Router from Sky Broadband are having problems

Hi, I've got a fair amount of knowledge in these area's. I not long switched to Sky Broadband a couple of weeks ago. The problem lies with the connection to the router that they supply for their service, a Netgear DG834GT. The problem is that my connection to the 802.11g network is extremely slow.
My iMac, even tested in the same room shows 20-30% signal. This compared 2 a Windows Vista laptop at 5bars and top speed downstairs, and two PC's (XP) either end of the house with the same normal signal quality.
Contacting Sky Broadband, they assume that the fault is with the iMac and are state that they can't really help because I am not using a wireless adapter supplied by them (If it's even compatible).
Does anyone know the solution to this? I've heard of many other users with similar problems on different Mac's but no-one seems to have a fix.
Also running bootcamp, ive found my signal strenth to me maximum, but my speed to still remain at 22Mb/s peak, and roughly 1-2Mb/s when browsing the internet.
Lastly I have WPA-PSK enabled, and i've tried adjusting wireless channels without having any luck improving the signal. I would be gratefull if anyone knew any ways to fix this problem, thanks

  • Using Ethernet to access Sky broadband

My daughter's old eMac is back home and I am trying to connect it to Sky broadband but struggling to correctly complete the information on the network screen. Any guidance on whether it's TCP/IP or PPPoE and what boxes to tick . Every combination seems to produce 'The specified Server could not be found'
    Thanks

Thanks for this but I'm afraid that it still isn't working.I'm using OS X 10.2.8. On the network screen I've selected :
    location - Sky
    Show- built-in ethernet
    I've selected TCP/IP
    Configure - using DHCP
I've put the IP address in the DNS box
There is an ethernet address but I don't know where that has come from
I'm using a Netscape Router to assess the internet by wireless on my PC laptop and have slotted the ethernet cable into the back of the router and into the eMac. On my laptop I had to say that nit was channel 11 but can't see where to do this on the e Mac.
I'm afraid that I'm not much good with this and my daughter only ever got it to work through trial and error and hasn't been able to figure it out this time.
    thanks

  • Migration from Sky Broadband to Infinity 2

    Hi,
Just wondered if someone can confirm is this correct.
I have called today to port from standard Sky Broadband to BT Infinity 2.
The operator advised me that I would need to port into the standard BT Total Broadband service first then the day after I would have to place another order for BT Infinity.
I would appreciate it if someone can confirm this is correct as its a bit long winded.
    Thanks

My line was taken over sometime  yesterday and a nice lady phoned at 8.30am this morning to book an engineer visit for next week.
My broadband is still active with the  old provider as i asked them to keep it live until I contact them, maybe this would happen anyway but I have read a few horror stories on here
Again, not how it happened for me - I had everything with Sky, phone line switched over on 3rd May, engineer called round 10 minutes later and set up Infinity

John46 is spot on.  General rule is if there is an engineer needed then a charge is applicable.

  • Sky broadband, airport extreme and extending the wireless network.

Hi - I am a recent apple convert and as such new to all things mac. My current setup is sky broadband, net gear router, w7 notebook, ipad2 and mac mini. My mac mini is in the studio at the bottom of the Garden and currently has no signal. I am trying to extend the signal using an airport extreme but keep falling at the first hurdle. Connecting the sky router by Ethernet to Airport and trying to setup via utility has got me stumped, the unit just flashes orange. In essence what I am trying to achieve is a network off the sky router through airport that enables all my units to work wirelessly and attach a wireless printer and USB hard drive. Is this going to be achievable or have I wasted my money on the airport extreme unit?
Any help or guidance greatly received.
    Thanks

Hi - thanks for your reply. I have my sky (netgear) broadband router connected to the telephone/broadband point. I have then attached an ethernet cable from the router to the wan port on the back of the airport extreme. When I log into the airport utility it recognises the AEB but it just flashes orange which is where I am stuck.
You mean the Netgear is a broadband modem and router?  If that is the case try disabling the Sky broadband router function as it is not compatible with the AEB. If your router is a wireless router, you will have to disable this function then see if you can connect. If your modem is separate from the router, you have to connect directly to the ethernet port of the modem and skip the Netgear router all together.
