Skype 64 bit question

On the arch wiki is a very good explanation for installing skype, but I have a question regarding this.
I can see on the official skype download page that there is a 64bit build for Ubuntu in .deb format. Can that .deb be uncompressed and compressed into a pacman installable file? I dont get why ubuntu has 64bit version and every other distro doesnt, looks weird to me.
If there is a way to do this, I would like to be part of the solution and mantain the package or at least help in maintaining

So it is !!
its just all 32 bit binaries packaged together. You can get the same thing by installing bin32-skype from AUR. I have done the same thing.

  • Solaris 10 x86  -  32/64 bit question

I have a Sun X4500 running Solaris 10 x86. I am having problems installing a third party application because the vendor says their application only runs on the 64 bit platform. They say their application installer runs "uname -a" to determine the platform and our output says we are running 32 bit only. The application vendor went on the say that uname should indicate something like x86_64 or i386_64 to indicate that 64 bit support was installed. Our uname output is as follows:
    # uname -a
    SunOS storage1 5.10 Generic_125101-09 i86pc i386 i86pc
The person who installed this server says he installed the 64 bit. I ran isainfo -v and got the following result which shows 64 bit was included at install.
    # isainfo -v
    64-bit amd64 applications
    sse3 sse2 sse fxsr amd_3dnowx amd_3dnow amd_mmx mmx cmov amd_sysc cx8
    tsc fpu
    32-bit i386 applications
    sse3 sse2 sse fxsr amd_3dnowx amd_3dnow amd_mmx mmx cmov amd_sysc cx8
    tsc fpu
So my questions are: 1) Why doesn't uname indicate that 64 bit support was installed? and 2) What can I do after the fact to make uname indicate that 64 bit support really is installed so that I can get this application installed.

Your uname output is already correct.
You have Solaris on x86 architecture.
That is all it will ever describe, no more and no less.
    Your isainfo output is correct.
It confirms you are in an environment that can function on 32-bit and 64-bit "stuff" as needed.
Your application vendor needs to re-think how their application confirms the environment and not just the underlying architecture.
Perhaps they should not use uname
but rather should parse from the more complex isainfo output.

  • Skype for business questions

    Hello,
One of our customers is planning to implement Skype for Business in their infrastructure with 150+ users. They have some questions regarding Skype and we are unable to answer some of them, so i kindly ask you to assist us with the answers of those questions:
Is it possible to block all external users (contacts, messages and free skype calls) and comunicate only with the internal employees?
Is it possible to block (centraly) the options to change the address book or the settings in Skype?
Is there a option to have centraly managed history log?
Are there any additional fees for the implementation and how much SkypeOut $ credit is required to enable Skype for Buisness?
    Thank you and best regards,
    Zhivko Zhekov

Is it possible to block all external users (contacts, messages and free skype calls) and comunicate only with the internal employees?
Yes. Let you configure your company's firewall/router to only allow connections on a certain port thats routed via LAN and have all internal users set alternative port for Skype.
I'll assume with the above question, each Skype ID doesn't have any external contacts already incorporated into each account for company use only.
More details on what ports are required for Skype:
    https://support.skype.com/en/faq/FA148/which-ports-need-to-be-open-to-use-skype-for-windows-desktop
If they using Mobile version of Skype, that could get trickier as they probably would still be connected different service provider giving them external access on ports if logged into Skype in two places at once. *I haven't tried this but that's what I would suggest*
    Thanks,
    Kent C.

  • 64 bits question for mac pro users

    Hi,
I am actually in the process of buying a new Mac Pro and I would like to know if someone here could help me to understand what's going on with the 64 bits mode thing on the mac pro.
I have a mac pro 1,1. Now I am using SL, but ML is out for a while. I use Logic 9 and most of my plugins supports the 64 bits mode, but I am sticked to the 32 bits mode.
First question: Is it right to think that going for 64 bits mode computer now will greatly improve the performances and internal memory management on Logic in 64 bits mode with plugins in 64 bits mode?
Second question: Looking at the wiki page for the mac pro (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mac_Pro#Specifications), I understand that the 5,1 model is fully 64 bits compatible, but what about the 3,1 and 4,1 models? Are they fully 64 bits compatible if they are upgraded to ML? Why is the kernel not 64 bits?
I would like to buy a used mac pro, which would fit better in my budget right now. But, I am looking for better performances and a 64 bits mode of operation, and these are my priorities right now.
Thanks for your time to help me.
    Martin

    Yes. And no.
Use all 8 DIMM slots. Result = 17% boost over not.
Use 667MHz 2GB DIMMs = 4% slower (not noticed real world, Barefeats also).
    Yes you can't use 8GB DDR3 etc.
I thnk that the issues wtih ML and Lion, the issue witrh some PCIe cards not working, not being bootable, and that it was the first to try to implement the new EFI and SMC in 3 yrs - are bigger issues.
And the cost of system even now is too high without taking into account: RAM, will I need to upgrade the video card it came with? before I can use it.
Yes. Penny wise and pound foolish over 4 yrs old model now (will turn 5 in February) and was first booted by Intel in November 2007.

  • Early Mac Pro EFI and 64 bit Question

I have an early Mac Pro 2006 and have been unable to successfully install Windows 7 64 bit due to EFI incompatibility (after installation was able to boot to safe mode but unable to otherwise boot; device manager shows that MacPro incompatible).
My question is why Apple has not provided a firmware update for the early MacPros that includes the newer EFI version present in current generation MacPros??

Let's see, different motherboard and you don't think that matters? the front side bus and memory operate differently, the PCI slots are configured different.
You can't just "update" firmware to cross those bridges. And I'm sure there is even more involved between EFI32 and UEFI 2.x (EFI64).
Vista SP1 wasn't out in 2006, and UEFI wasn't finalized and supported yet.
Apple never provided 64-bit drivers for Windows on the 1st generation Mac Pro, and none of the iMac series has had UEFI or 64-bit endorsements.
You figured out how to install Windows 7 from inside Vista, and probably how to get Boot Camp 64-bit. All you probably need is a small Vista or Windows 7 32-bit system partition to carry you forward.

  • Skype Contact List question

Quick question...Can anyone tell me why my skype contact list doesn't have the magnifying glass and alphabet listed on the right side of the screen as the phone's internal contact list does? My wife has the exact same iPhone 4, with the same version of skype on it and her skype contact list has the alphabet bar.
I think it has something to do with my skype account because when I log in with her account on my phone, the alphabet bar show up. Likewise, when I log into my account on her phone, the alphabet bar disappears. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

  • Skype Install Problem / Question

I will try to explain this as best I can.
I have a new MacBook (My first Mac) running 10.5.2. I use Firefox for browsing. My downloads go to "My User Name" > Downloads. Normally this works OK. Installing things is a bit different than on a PC, but I am getting the hang of it.
    Skype, however, has me baffled.
After I download I launch the application. I see a folder that asks me to drag the logo (usually on my desktop) to the applications folder. However, when I get it there it creates an 'alias.' And the Skype Folder in Applications contains a Skype Alias icon and an Applications icon. The real Skype icon stays on the desktop and when I click the Alias it will recreate itself.
What is going on here? Anyone understand this issue from my description? Also, any possible solutions? I'd love to get my Skype up and running.
    Thanks in advance!

Thanks! Worked like a charm. I guess I missed that part. Most of my other installs have gone well. I am still getting used to some of the 'differences' though.
    Appreciate the reply and assistance.

  • Snow Leopard 64 bit question?

hi, first of all, i dont own a mac yet, but soon i will and i really diden´t knwo wher to put this topic, but here it goes...
i i saw the key note from WWDC and my question is... does 64 bit automaticly run if you have... like 4 gb of ram?`or does apple give you a 64 bit OS of snow leopard? please answer me in anyways you can:)
    Daniel

does 64 bit automaticly run if you have... like 4 gb of ram?
Leopard already supports up to 4 GB of memory at a time per 32 bit application; Snow Leopard's 64 bit support extends this into the exabyte range. In practical terms, it means apps can use all the available memory any current Mac (or those likely to be released for the life of the OS) could support.
You can read more about 64 bit support & other Snow Leopard refinements at New technologies in Snow Leopard.

  • TNT 488 SRQ bit question

I have a question regarding the TNT 488 chip:
I am working witht the TNT 488 chip, on my board in Turbo+7210 mode.
    The STBO IE = 1.
The controller on the PC side, wants to know if the RQS bit is set by sending the ibwait command. As I am working in STBO IE = 1 mode, the RQS is not set, until I am serial polled. I am looking for a way to set the RQS bit (and remain in STBO IE = 1), without being serial polled. I tried to write the following lines:
    TNT_Out(R_auxmr,F_reqt) ;
Wait for STBO to become true in ISR0 for Onechip or Turbo+7210 mode or ISR2 for Turbo+9914 mode AND THEN
    TNT_Out(R_spmr, 0x40) ;
in case I want to raise the RQS bit, but it does not always work. The Turbo +9914 mode DOES have this option.
    My question is:
Is there a way to raise the RQS bit, remain in STBO IE = 1, and remain in Turbo+7210 mode without being actually serial polled by the PC controller

    My question is:
Is there a way to raise the RQS bit, remain in STBO IE = 1, and remain in Turbo+7210 mode without being actually serial polled by the PC controller
Do you have autopolling enabled for the GPIB controller? If you are using an NI GPIB controller with NI-488.2 driver software, autopolling is enabled by default. This means the GPIB controller will automatically conduct a serial poll whenver it detects the SRQ signal asserted. If you want to disable this you can do so by calling ibconfig with the IbcAUTOPOLL parameter.

  • CS-5 64 bit / 32 bit QUESTION.

If I choose to install only the 64 bit version of CS-5 in Win 7 64 bit; and in the future I decide I want the 32 bit version as well, for some reason---
Is it possible to "Add / Install the 32 bit version without doing an Uninstall of the 64 bit version???
    Leigh

Not easily, because the 64 bit version would get updates, and the (older) installer might refuse to install because of the changes.\
Just install both as usual, and use only the 64 bit version.

  • Another 64-bit Question - 10.6.8 OK - 10.8.2 not OK

I just installed 10.8.2 onto a fresh drive on my Mac Pro 3,2 18GB Ram, 2x2.8GHz Quad. Everything is great EXCEPT I can't get the Kernel to run in 64-bit mode. My old 10.6.8 is still available and so I booted to that, and was able to run in 64-bit just fine. Also odd is that there is no information in the System Profiler under System Software Overview...where it should say 64-bit Kernel and Extensions [yes/no], there is no line at all (there is in 10.6.8). I am using that little Startup Mode Selector App to see if the kernel is in 32-bit.
    Kernel Version is Darwin 12.2.0
    I am stumped...
    Randy

    RE,
No PID 0 is displayed (or anything named kernel_task). Everything in the Process List is running with kind = 64bit, but from my reading, that doesn't mean the 64bit kernel is running. Also, my MacPro 3,1 is one of the oldest machines that WILL run 10.8.2, but it also has the distinction of not defaulting to 64bit (at least that is my understanding), where newer machines will.
I may be OK, but it would be nice to be able to confirm definitively...
In the terminal, a uname -a produces this...
    Randys-Mac-Pro:~ randythorderson$ uname -a
    Darwin Randys-Mac-Pro.local 12.2.0 Darwin Kernel Version 12.2.0: Sat Aug 25 00:48:52 PDT 2012; root:xnu-2050.18.24~1/RELEASE_X86_64 x86_64
    Is the bold my confirmation?

  • Setting bits question

I have a bunch of bytes of data I want to build in a byte array.
I looked at BitSet but I dont' think does what I want.
I'd like to be able to specify a start byte/bit, end byte/bit, along with the data I want to add.
    Ex.
I'd like to be able to set the first 4 bits of the first byte or
specify stariting at byte 2, for the next 24 bits write this integer.
I know I could do a bunch of fanagling with and/ors,etc. but I was wondering if there is another way.
    Thanks

A few weeks ago, I was playing around with something similar after reading this ACM article (http://queue.acm.org/detail.cfm?id=1563874).
To illustrate his point, the author created a bit-based record format used to hold U.S. Census data. Each record held information on one person. So, the first bit was the sex, the next 7 bits was the person's age, the next 32 bits was the person's income, etc. For fun, I created a Java program which could read and write these records. It was tricky doing this, but I got it to work.
One thing to remember that bothered me was that Java doesn't support the concept of "unsigned" like C does. So, when you read all your bytes into a byte array, you must deal with the fact that if the "left-most" bit of the byte is 1, the byte integer value will be negative. And you'll have to know a lot about bit shifting and AND. I looked into BitSet as well, but it didn't help me either.

  • 16 bit questions

    Hello all,
    I'm using a Canon 40D, Photoshop 6 and a Mac Mini running OSX 10.8.4.
I'm loading a RAW image from my Camera into Photoshop in 16 bit mode.  As I understand it, my Canon 40D has a 12-bit A/D and RAW images have a 12 bit depth out of the camera.  Loading them in 8-bit depth would lose some dynamic range/resolution, so I choose to load them in 16 bit mode.
Once the RAW image is in Photoshop in 16 bits, I scroll over parts of the image with the color picker to see the pixel values.  This is where I lose understanding of what's going on.  The color picker shows pure white values as 32768 and pure black values as zero.  Apparently Photoshop (or Camera Raw) is shifting the 12-bit camera data up to fill the top 16 bits in Photoshop.  But this is not entirely true!  If it truly shifted all 12 camera bits into the 12 MSBs of the 16 bit Photoshop value, wouldn't the max white value be 65535??  If the 12 bits were shifted into the 15th bit, wouldn't the max value be 32767??  Where does 32768 come from?  Also, what is Photoshop putting into the LSBs after it does the shifting?
I'm trying to do some averaging of lots of low light exposures using Linear Dodge in 16 bit mode.  If photoshop indeed shifts the 12-bit camera values to the MSB of the 16 bit word, I'll eventually run into clipping when I sum my images.  I'd have to go to 32-bit mode and that really slows down my system, almost to the point of uselessness.
Can anyone clarify what's going on in 16-bit mode?
    Thanks,
    Kevin H.

Photoshop's 16 bit mode ix 0..32768. This provides a middle value (important for blending), and simplifies a lot of the math involved (which keeps it running faster).
White is 32768, black is 0.  It is working correctly.
