Skype altogether

hi, im not sure if this goes in the correct area, and ive never used the forums for skype xD
but how can i disable the updates for skype, um like every time i turn my laptop on it always say skype to update or not now and its kinda annoying now....
Ive tried this:
Go to Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services -> Skype Updater Service -> set to DISABLED
but when i go on that it doesnt have the option to disable, what should i do? thanks in advance

Your United Kingdom Unlimited min to landlines is still active and you have used it for calling. You can check it from your account page https://secure.skype.com/account/main-page
Although I noticed in your call history that you have tried to call some incorrect numbers, for example last called number has 16 digits, which seems to be way too much.
Take a quick look at your call history: https://secure.skype.com/account/call-history
You can try to dial numbers with + sign, country code and then the number itself.

Skype click to call interferes with copy/cut-paste in Excel and generally in Microsoft Office. Once installed it allows text-only pasting leading to time-loss in reformatting text. The problem is easily resolved by unistalling it.
Here are some proposed steps to improve it -
It needs better bug-testing before release
It needs to move away from piggy-backing on Skype (without asking user's permission to install/ update itself) and instead needs to be launched separately. This would also solve the iddue (for Skype) of people abandoning and uninstalling SKype altogether because of the buggy Skype click to call thing
Respect the user and the user's choice - and finally never ever take your user for granted (as the auto installation of Skype click to call has demonstrated)

Me too! I thought it was a Google Chrome problem. I even rebuilt my laptop over it and spent a whole day on the phone with Geeksquad! I just uninstalled Click-to-call and now the problem is gone.
This is a really big deal, people use copy/paste all the time and expect the formatting to work. I'm telling everybody to uninstall click-to-call and/or don't install it in the first place. I hope somebody gets serious and fixes it. And, Skype will have to acknowledge the problem and tell me it is fixed before I will give click-to-call another shot.
Not trying to be a jerk - that is just the truth of it.

  • Charged twice, skype refuses to refund

I had a subcription for a month of unlimited calls on my account and due to accidentally emptying my account at the ATM on the same day when the skype payment was due it obviously failed to take the money from my bank account. In the past if this happened you could just go to your account and remove the failed payment method and put it back in and the system would automatically keep your subscription intact right?
Well when the payment failed i logged into my account to find a way to pay for it but to my horror the entire subscription had been deleted from my account altogether with no way of re-activating it. Only thing that was there was a notice saying my subscription had been cancelled and when i clicked on that link it would take me to the page where you can buy a whole new subscription. Since my skype number was due at the same time it's the same story for that too. I can only buy a new number or get a brand new subscription at a higher price than what i was paying previously!
That's not all, i actually went through with getting a whole new subscription while being extremely bitter about the higher price til i eventually forgot about it in the next 2 weeks that followed. After nearly 2 months passed i randomly logged into my skype account and saw that the subscription that skype claimed to have been cancelled had came back a month after and skype had been charging me twice a month for the exact same subscription but with 2 different prices. How can you delete my subscription off of my account and let me know it's been cancelled instead of giving me a chance to pay for it and then bring that same "cancelled" account back a month later without any notice me to me the customer?
I contacted Live Text Chat Support with this issue and they coldly blamed me for failing the automatic payment (as if its impossible to make that mistake) while offering no explanation as to why the option to retry the payment has been removed from skype altogether. I asked them to manually attempt the payment again from my account and they said this was not possible and that there's no chance for me to get any sort of refund for this. All i got was "sorry we assure you this won't happen again!". Apparently refunds are only possible if you report the issue within 2 weeks of them charging you (wtf) while it's also necessary for the subcription to be active while the refund is being issued. Of course when i saw that for some reason i had 2 versions of the same exact subscription i went and cancelled the other one and now because of something like this i can't get a refund?
I've been a paying customer for over 3 years straight now and a skype user pretty much since skype first came out and i'm appalled at how they treat their customers. The person Maria B. who i talked to on the Live Chat was also very rude and ended the chat session prematurely while i was typing. If it's skype's mistake that a cancelled account suddenly reappears then what does it matter if i went and cancelled that account before reporting it and why does it matter if it was over 2 weeks ago when they charged me? Who in their right mind would keep 2 subscriptions of the same exact thing on 1 skype account?
I asked if there was any way to get my subscription back and they said it's impossible and that i would just have to subscribe to a new one. But wait, that is exactly what i did last time and what got me into this mess in the first place! I'm so disappointed by the horrid level of customer support that skype is providing to their paying customers that i'd quit using the program immediately if it wasn't for the fact that all my friends use it. But yea maybe it's time to take my money elsewhere, it's never fun to pay for something and get dirt thrown in your face in return.

  • Can you remove of the Skype icon off your desktop?

I was just wondering if you can remove the Skype icon off your desktop without removing Skype altogether?

    Crice
Yes, the icon on your desktop is just a shortcut to the program. On Macs it's called an alias.

  • Recovery of skype chat history

Hello, I'm wondering if I can get piece of advice for the following concern regarding chat history.
    1. I did formatting on my system and lost all the Chat history of skype.
    2. Is Skype organization taking any backup of chat history on their server... And if so then what's the process to get it back. Is any free service or even paid service available to get the chat history back?
    3. Any piece of advice would be much appreciated as I'm about to lose lots of important information saved in my chat archive

  • Skype Causing PCI Compliance Failure

    Hi,
As part of my business, I have to undergo PCI Data compliance scans every 3 months. Everything has been okay, but I recently failed a scan, and received this message:
Description: Skype for Windows < 5.8.0.154 Unspecified Vulnerability (uncredentialed check) Synopsis: The remote Skype install has an unspecified vulnerability. Impact: According to its timestamp, the version of Skype installed on the remote Windows host reportedly has an as-yet unspecified vulnerability.
The suggested "Resolution" is to 'Upgrade to Skype for Windows 5.8.0.154 or later.'
I am running Wndows on VMWare Fusion on my Mac. Initially, I deleted Skype altogether from Windows and updated Skype on my MAC OS X, and still received the same message So I reinstalled the latest version of Skype for Windows, and STILL received a fail on the scan.
Is there some way to fix this? It looks like resolving this issue will fix up all the problems I've been having. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there ... your post was a long time ago, but wondered if you managed to solve the problem of Skype clients causing PCI compliance to fail?  We are going through the same issues at the moment, all Skype clients updated, yet we are still failing every test.  If you managed to find a fix, would be great to know!  Cheers.

  • Rear microphone in skype

I was using the rear mic successfully in skype, but all of a sudden it has stopped working. Probably after the latest skype update.
I tried deleting the ~/.Skype folder to see if it helps any, but it didnt.
My front mic works as it should, but I would rather have all the wires hidden behind the tower. Here's a screen shot of the various Microphone options in skype for my machine. The rear mic doesn't work for any of the options:
    Any ideas?

Inxsible wrote:Sorry, I have stopped using Skype altogether.
I use it every once in a while but I use it with pulseaudio and so far no problems. As a note for posterity, hda codecs can "sense" when something is connected and jacks can act both as input and output, so having something connected can make a difference and the number of outputs configuration will affect the behavior of inputs/outputs, hence my question.
On another note, this thread was a little old and I didn't notice it when I replied, so whatever the problem was (and is for another user) it might not even be related so better take the new problem to a new thread I guess.

  • Skype sound drops

    Hello,
I'm on a powerbook G4 with 10.3.9. I've got the latest version of skype. Though my system prefs are set to the headset i'm using, as are the skype prefs, the sound into my headset will switch off (prefs don't change) and i can't hear anything. I may make one call ok, then the second call, no sound.
Sometimes restarting skype will turn sound back on. Sometimes, replugging headphone jack will turn it back on.
I have an altec lansing headset w/usb connection as well as separate plugs to input & output. The USB connector seems not to respond to unplugging & replugging.
(this same behavior happens on my sister's g4 powerbook with tiger. Same headset)
Does anyone have any thoughts on why this is inconsistent. It is taking a lot of fiddling around to make calls at times. Doesn't make this a dependable tool and i am very disappointed in all of it.

the problem appears to only be the headset (not mic). The sound for the headset goes mute, yet if i check sound on my powerbook, i can hear it thru the headset. So the headset continues to work, but skype 'sound' goes mute.
it's as if hanging up from a call, triggers the sound to go off. (just speculating here and getting more specific as to what i'm noticing). The second call will be mute. If i remove the headset plug, the sound comes back.
If i use the usb connector, i cannot affect a change w/o restarting skype altogether.
Preferences don't seem to change. And i tried leaving the prefs windows open. No change.
The prefs show that audio output shows my "built in audio headphones" & audio input shows "built-in audio internal microphone".
I have a question in to skype support, but have not gotten any feedback yet.

  • Can't sign in, can't quit, doesn't work.

Honestly, I am completely done with Skype. I have been using this application for over 2 years now and there is this one problem that continuously persists and appears on my laptop, as well as others.
When I log in, everything seems to be working fine and well until you actually try to use the application. I cannot change my status from online to away, offline or anything at all. I can still click buttons, open my settings, but nothing changes and calling/messaging others won't work either.
When I sign out and generally quit Skype, it continues running in my taskbar and will even say "this program cannot be stopped" when I try to force-quit it. Then, if I try to log in again, it will say that I am still logged in on this computer while I clearly am not. Only shutting down my laptop will quit the program.
I have tried deleting, reinstalling and nearly every method suggested but nothing changes.
I run Windows 8 and yes, even installed the latest update every single time in hopes that the problem would be solved. Nothing ever changed though.
Hopefully anyone has a solution for this, because I am about to quit Skype altogether.

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode and then try to reset all Skype settings.
Go to Windows Start and in the Search/Run box type %appdata% and then press Enter or click the OK button. The Windows File Explorer will pop up. There locate a folder named “Skype”. Rename this folder to something different, e.g. Skype_old.
Next go to Windows Start and in the Search/Run box type %temp%\skype and then press Enter or click the OK button. Delete the DbTemp folder.
Reboot in normal mode and restart Skype.

  • Click-to-Call Bug

During the night, Skype have sent out a bug to every subscribers computer.
Every 30 seconds I get such an annoying a pop-up:
"The following plug-in unresponsive: Skype Click-to-Call.  Would you like to stop it?"
And when you select YES, it does NOTHING.  And WHY does this do NOTHING?
And YES, this pop-up appears when I have quit and logged-out of Skype altogether.
This IS a bug sent out deliberately by Skype.  I have NEVER had this until this morning.
I am going to remove Skype from my system altogether and go back to using www.vzochat.com
When I signed up for SKYPE, I did NOT sign up for my computer to be hacked by Skype webmasters to be under their control.
Moreover, why is there no contact details for Skype?  Because they want to remain a shady and unscrupulous outfit, perhaps?
This is yet more time I am having to spend on my PC doing things I dont intend doing, costing me time.
GET A GRIP, SKYPE, or we circulate this 'planted bug' on Facebook and elsewhere.

    Dear Readers,
This particular thread related to Skype's Click-to-Call feature is outdated!  A new version of the feature was issued on 16 August 2013.  You need to update your browsers and download the new Click-to-Call add-on; remember to enable it!
There are still random issues with Click-to-Call on the Chrome browser which Skype is aware of.
    This old thread now closed.

  • Forgot Password...But Can't Reset

Skype for Windows Desktop glitched out on my computer a few days ago, and I found myself signed out. However, since I've had Skype set to automatically sign me in whenever I opened it for the past several years, I've completely forgotten my password! I thought this would be an easy fix, so I went to the password-reset form on the Skype website using the link provided in the client's sign-in menu. I inputted my email address, pressed the big, green "Send email" button...and I was redirected to the Microsoft account password-reset site. I went through this and reset my password. I tried my new password in Skype...and it didn't work. This is because I don't have a Microsoft account---and I've avoided creating one out of principle---but rather I've used a Skype Name since I opened my Skype account before Microsoft purchased Skype and before there was even such thing as a global Microsoft account. No matter what I tried, I was always redirected to the Microsoft password-reset form. So now I'm stuck, unable to reset my Skype password and unable to recall my current password from the depths of my long-term memory; I'm basically locked out of Skype altogether. ...Help, please? (Thanks in advance!)  P.S. In order to post this, I had to make a new Skype account using my Facebook account. Once this problem is resolved and I have my actual Skype account back, I'd like to set things back to the way they were by deleting this "temporary" account and/or (at the very least) disconnecting it from my Facebook account. How would I go about doing this?

Have you resolved this problem as I have a friend who has experienced this same problem and I told her I would get into skype and see if anyone else has forgotten their password and has received a reply. I don't see any replies on how to fix the problem. Thank you for your input. [Removed for privacy].

  • Video Call support on G3 hardware

The minimum OS requirement for the latest version of Skype is 10.3.9, but the hardware requirement is G4..
I know that you can get an older version of Skype for the G3, but it's voice only. Is there a way to bypass this limitation? "No, there's not." What alternative client would let me talk to people on Skype with video? I don't necessarily have to broadcast video, just view; like a 3rd generation iPod touch with Fring or Skype.
    Any ideas?
-An acceptable alternative could bypass Skype altogether, however it needs to be compatible with the iPod touch 4th gen; e.g. Fring.

K, I feel dumb, because it already has video support...
Let's change the question. Are there alternatives to Skype, since it's 3 years old?

  • Subscription discontinued for no reason

I have had a Germany Subscription for over a year and all of the sudden, the service was cancelled.  The only reason was that the transaction could not go through.  Even though it always went through automatically and there is money on the account as well.  It is sad that there is no actual phone support for Skype.  Which is probably why I will cancel Skype altogether.

  • Problems since the updated version installed

We have recently had a pc automatically update the version of 7.0.85.100, but since that time our Sogatel Digital Cordless Skype Phone does not work correctly.
Incoming calls do not connect - and we are met with loud feedback screeching from the speaks on the phone (the settings in the options are set for USB mobile device as they always have been).  The LCD screen continues to show the symbol of the ringing phone even when the call is answered (answered but not connected)....the only way to clear the screen is by quitting skype altogether
Outgoing calls do connect, but the screen again will freeze on the icon showing an outbound call is being made.  The only way to clear this is again by quitting skype.
This problem is associated to the update - as we used the phone unit in another pc that still have the older version of skype and the phone worked perfectly ok.  When plugged back into the pc with the new software, once again the problem occurred.
Please can you advise on how we can uninstall the updated version and revert back to the older one.

A number of other users have also reported problems with Skype phones and the latest version, although I do not recall seeing a solution.
A temporary solution is to revert to the previous working version.
This thread has downgrade instructions and tips to keep it from upgrading automatically.

  • Built-in iSight will not work with Skype

I have a new Macbook Pro that I purchased about a month ago, running OS
    X 10.5.8.
I've been using Skype to video chat, and at first everything was working
very well. In the middle of a chat, however, the video stopped working
    altogether.
If I go to the video tab in Skype preferences, the camera will then turn
on and I can see myself, but once I go back to the call, the camera
won't turn on (the green light on my camera stays off too). In video
preferences I have the following options checked: Enable Skype Video,
Automatically receive video from: People in my Contact list, and Show
that I have video to: People in my contact list. I have also tried to
enable the "Start my video automatically" option but to no avail. The
video camera it is set to use is the Built-in iSight.
I have tried reinstalling skype, including deleting all the preference
files on the computer, but that did not help.
The video works fine in other applications such as Photobooth, iMovie and Google Chat. I have browsed through the many Skype forum posts about similar issues, as well as Apple forums and have tried every fix that people have suggested including resetting my SMC, updating all my applications, trying Skype under different user accounts, reinstalling Quicktime, reinstalling Skype (as outlined in the Uninstall guide for mac), repairing permissions, etc.
I am pretty sure that this problem began directly after I switched to
SCREEN SHARING during a video chat. When I switched back to Video, it
    did not work.
No other applications that use my camera are running.
I am assuming that since it originally worked with Skype, and since I had not touched ANY of the options in Skype and have done nothing other than try screen sharing, and since I did a complete Skype reinstall includeing preferences, that the problem should NOT be with the Skype program itself, but rather something that was modified in the operating system configuration during screen sharing.
The only other thing I can think of trying is to reinstall iSight, although I haven't been able to figure out how to do that, or to reinstall my entire operating system, which I don't see as an acceptable solution.
I am using Skype Version 2.8.0.659
Any help getting this fixed would be greatly appreciated.
I have posted a similar topic in the Skype forums along with a screen shot of my Skype preferences window: http://forum.skype.com/index.php?showtopic=422861
From my online reading in both the Apple and Skype forums, it seems as though this is a relatively common problem. If I can find a solution from either Skype or Apple, I will post the solution in both of the forums.
Update: I just upgraded my OS to 10.6.1 and my camera started working again. Then, I was in a chat and I lost my internet connection. As soon as I got back online I restarted the conversation and the camera doesn't work again. This is getting to be ridiculous.
    Thank you for your time,
    rystheguy

    Hi,
It is years since I tried Skype. (Probably in Tiger)
I use Little Snitch, a utility that can report the ports and IPS any App is trying to contact.
For Video chats it seems the Skype process spreads the load across many "Servers" wanting to connect to about 3 doz (I got fed up with clicking the accept Button)
For this reason I do not think it is very secure.
I only today read a post that said Skype had Screen Sharing.
iChat 5 makes it clear (well if you run /Applications/iChat.app/Contents/MacOS/iChat -errorLogLevel 7 In Terminal) that there is a "camera" setting for the Desktop which may be a forthcoming thing or is about produce the Screen Sharing pic. (i.e iChat lists two "cameras" in the log produced by the above Terminal command).
iChat 4 and 5 use the Apple Remote Desktop engine to do Screen Share as does the Screen Sharing App invoked from the Finders Go Menu > Go to Server and using VNC:// as the Link type.
I would have no idea what protocol Skype are using.
They created their own Video protocols and similar with SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) for Connecting to POTS (Plain Old Telephone Systems) Phones in disregard for Internationally agreed Standards.
I doubt that it makes use of the ARD engine. It will probably be a reinvention of the wheel again.
I took a look around the Skype web site but could not find any mention of how they are doing Screen Sharing.
I would guess it is similar to the iUSBCam method of Desktop as Video Feed.
Do the Console or System Log in Console (Applications/Utilities) have any messages about this ?
