Skype audio call to a mobile - data usage

I wondered how much data is used per minute or per hour if I use the Skype client to make an audio call to a mobile. I see people saying 2Gb/hr for video but what about audio calls?
Thanks.

Unfortunately it seems some people forget their b's and B's.
Remember that there is 8 bits (b) in a Byte (B).
Some rough calculations (ignoring 1024vs1000 etc.)
100kbps (100 kilo bits per second) is the same as 100,000bps (100,000 bits per second)
100,000 bps / 8 = 12,500 Bps (Bytes per second) and is the same as 12.5 KBps (Kilo Bytes per second)
12.5 Kilo Bytes per second x 60 seconds = 750 KBps OR 0.75 MB per min
So for approximate usage at recommended rate of 100kbps for voice only Skype calls is:
0.75 MB per min
7.5 MB per 10 mins
22.5 MB per 30 mins
45 MB per hour

for eg : Mobile Data Usage - Current Data Usage - Current Period volumes showing 342 MB but if i check the  Use Mobile Data For Apps Volumes for all Apps including System Service Data's and Uninstalled Data's are showing very less ( around 200 MB only ) compare with Current Period Volumes.
Mobile Data Usage - Current Data Usage - Current Period  and Use Mobile Data For Apps ( Apps wise data usage ) Data's are not matching..
Please let me know will it show like that only or its an issue ????  if you want i can share the screen shot as well.

  • Skype via 3G not showing on data usage?

I live in the US and received a skype call from a buddy in Greece. We're both using our iPhones. I'm on 3G...he is on wi-fi. We had a 5min call, but when I check AT&T data usage, I don't see any data usage that reflects my skype call using 3G. How is that?

From the call receivers point of view, a Skype call to a mobile or landline appears to be just another phone call, and is subject to any local charges you may have to pay to receive calls (you'll probably pay to receive calls if you were outside your home country). A Skype call doesn't require the person called to have Skype installed, or to have a data connection, as the routing of the call is done via the Internet, but ultimately the call is connected the same way as any other call - through the telecoms network.
If you call someone, you'll need the WiFi connection or 3G to make the call, in which case it'll show up as data usage if 3G is used.
You'll probably find that your Greek friend will pay a small charge per minute to Skype (perhaps a few cents of a Euro per minute) to make the call, but it is very cheap, even to international mobiles. Skype in turn may pay a fraction of this charge to AT&T to connect the call for you, and to your iPhone it'll probably look like it's a local call rather than an international one.
Check out the Skype pages for more info on how this works.

    Hi there,
when I try to disable the usage of mobile data to the app store the switch always turns back to "on" when I reenter the menu.

Try changing the country setting to something else than where you live. Scroll down to the bottom of the App Store main page and click the flag icon in the lower right.

  • Mobile data usage meter is HUGELY overcharging me...why?

It's 4-5 days since I got my sim card for the $49 Freedom Connect BYO plan.  That's a plan with 1.5 gigs included data and 25c per megabyte for excess data.  My data usage meter says I've used 0 kb of my included data and over $400 worth of pay as you go data (200mb charged at $2 a megabyte).  I spoke to the chat support a few days ago and they confirmed this is 'wrong' and said they 'take the charges away'.  Well, since then, my data has continued to be charged at $2 per megabyte.  Holy cow, does Telstra want my house?  Can anyone clarify, reassure or otherwise me about this?

There aren't as many posts on this issue as, for example, the SG2 threads. As for not knowing, I would assume that customers would think about contacting Telstra via Phone, Email, LiveChat or via  a Telstra Store (Last Resort). Customers should feel free to able to contact suppliers and ask questions about their account. jonandemi wrote:

  • High mobile data usage

A data counter which could be placed somewhere on the screen perhaps as a watermark or in the tool bar or some easily accessible location would be a real advanatge to those of us getting caught with inexplicable extra data usage.

Android and Windows phones can use the TelstraOne app and widget to view this information, however I don't know if iOS supports widgets in the same way (I have never seen one if it does), but the 24/7 app isn't that hard to open and check really is it?

  • How is a call handled differently than data usage?

During a hurricane in the fall, my daughter was unable to make calls with her cell phone, but she was able to reach people by texting.  She's on our plan, and has an Android.  I just got an Android.
I'd like to know how she was able to send and receive text messages, when she couldn't send or receive phone calls, and if texting, email, and internet access are likely to be more available than calling during hurricanes or other serious weather conditions.  My husband and I are looking at communications options, evaluating the cost of our options against the likelihood of being able to call for help if we need it or reassuring loved ones we're all right during hurricanes, ice storms, etc.
Also, am I right in assuming that if we can't make a phone call, 911 service would also be down?

Texting is handled through a small data connection via the phone line. I suspect the towers were overloaded with calls, that is why a call could not be made, but a text could occur. Towers can handle thousands of texts as they are just short 2-5k size bursts of info.
Calls tie up a connection on a tower and if loaded, you can not call out or have someone call you.
You are correct, if the tower is overloaded or down you can not make a 911 call from that specific location. But a 1/2 mile or more down the road, you may hit another tower and it may work

  • WiFi vs Mobile Data Usage with phone

So, I'm looking to move from my Storm2 to a Z10 and the one thing holding me back at the moment is that I will lose my unlimited data plan with Verizon if I make the switch.
Admittedly I only use less that 0.5 GB a month currently and I have WiFi at my normal locations.
My question is whether it uses the WiFi properly or as a primary link because I know that the Storm2 does not.
Before I get some defender of BB here, my simple test is a website which is only available through my intranet.  When I'm hooked up with everything on an connected I cannot reach this site but when I turn off Mobile service and have only WiFi on, the website works fine.  This would tell me that the system defaults to mobil and I cannot see where it would use wifi except when signal drops out.
So, before I could move to a phone where I fully expect to use more of my data plan I would need to know that it actually defaults to wifi when available.
    I apprecaite the help,
    Mike

  • Dropped calls, no service, excessive data usage, extremely low battery life

Ever since downloading the new update all my calls are dropped, I have no service anywhere I never get over three circles anywhere and when making a call it will instantly drop to lower service, my phones battery is quickly drained. my phone has been using excessive amounts of data, even while at home on wifi. I have my cellular data off, back app refresh off, and have taken it into the verizon store they worked on it for a half hour and said it should be good but there is no change. While there I had the rep check coverage for my home, because while I had coverage before I no longer do, he confirmed I should have full coverage 4g Lte, and that I was in an amazing area for coverage. Except I"m not getting any coverage. I've also sat on the phone with verizon several times and had them try to fix it, no help. The circles that show coverage/service will change when I"m not even moving around, for whatever reason. My phone also just generally runs slower and will occasionally freeze up when pressing the home button or closing an app.

Does Skype drain mobile data? I'm using skype on my 4G LTE plan. I have only 500mb left but for some reason Skype doesn't affect my mobile data. Is it supposed to?

  • Skype vdeo call and high cpu usage on Mac

    Hello,
I have seen many posts around skype video call causing extremely high CPU usage which in turn causes a lot of heat and fan starts to go crazy. This does not seem to happen on Windows. I have trawled various forums and tried everything but to no avail.
Finally the workaround that worked for me was simple - during a call when CPU usage is going through the roof and the fans going crazy - just share your screen for a few seconds with the caller and then unshare. CPU usage dramatically falls off and stabilises at around 38% to 40%. I have noticed this my Macbook Pro (2013 2.3ghz, 16gb RAM) running Yosemite.
This is definitely a problem with Skype. Guys; please fix....

Did the sharing and unsharing of screen stabilise your CPU usage? I also tried deleting the Library/Caches/com.skype* directory and whilst it helped initially, in the long run it did not work. The only thing that worked for me was sreen share and unshare.
Personally I am just getting more and more disappointed with OS X. The way they have implemented HiDPI support with scaling (downscaling and then upscaling) is just insane and a lot of applications struggle. I am sure this is not the root cause of the high CPU usage issue for Skype. It's not long before I come off the Apple ecosystem altogether.

  • Ellipsis 7 tablet - drops wi-fi and goes to mobile data w/o telling you, and for no reason?

I don't totally hate my Ellipsis 7 tablet.  It does have a nice, bright screen, and it does have a fairly fast processor.
This is where the compliments stop.
1.) It's glitchy.  As others have stated, icons do seem to disappear.
2.) It seems to "lose communication" with my high-end Sandisk micro-sd card (that has no other problems when used in my smartphone.)
3.) The battery life could be a lot better - you will charge it every day, even with minimal use.
but my biggest problem with this tablet (which I got from my local Verizon store) is it's "sneaky behavior" with mobile data.  I am nearly convinced that these devices are designed, intentionally, to use up your mobile data whenever possible, even when solid wi-fi is available.
Have any of you Verizon Ellipsis 7 users, that use these primarily at home with wi-fi available, noticed a rather large increase in the mobile data being used?
This is sort of long, so I appreciate everyone who takes the time to read this...
Here's my scenario; which I can duplicate.
I live in a place with 2 strong wi-fi networks available.  The tablet accesses both of them with no problem.  Speed tests show 10Mbps download and 0.768 Mbps upload, the speed we pay for.
One night, I get the text messages from Verizon that I'm close to using all my mobile data. (which I appreciate)  But I'd been getting so many texts, emails, etc., that day I didn't look to see what the alert was.  My bad!  So, I'd gone over and approved $10 to upgrade with one more GB of data.  I figured it was a fluke; that somehow I had turned off my wi-fi, or it had gone down, or somehow something happened that made the tablet switch over to mobile data.
...but I was watching more closely now...
less than 24 hours later, I'm getting those messages again!  I'd used one GB in less than 24 hours???  So I called Verizon, and we went through the normal putting limits on the device, etc., so it couldn't happen again.
So then, I asked him the simple question?  When not 1, but 2, strong wi-fi signals are available, why would this device switch over to mobile data, WITHOUT letting you know???
He couldn't answer that. He transferred me to someone else that was "higher" in techincal support.  She was a sweet girl, and really wanted to help me, but she never understood my problem.  At one point I said to her, "Look, it's simple.  These devices always default to wi-fi if available.  What would make them disconnect from wi-fi and go to mobile data instead?"  Her answer was that she needed to look up if a tablet was supposed to connect to wi-fi first...  uh, OK.
At the end of a very frustrating call, she offered to send me a box to ship it back to Verizon in.  They would then decide to repair or replace it.  I would be without a tablet for a minimum of two weeks.  I said Thanks but No Thanks, I would just disable mobile data entirely.  The lady I spoke with did not seem pleased with my decision, but what could she do?  And we ended the call.
So, I'm still trying to figure out what is making this thing kick over to mobile data (remember I just shut mobile data off entirely before I hung up with Verizon) and I was currently connected to an external bluetooth speaker (which shouldn't have anything to do with anything, I realize), when I started a video on YouTube.
Now, mind you, I was ALREADY showing connected to a strong wi-fi network.
And up comes a dialog popup, asking me to turn the wi-fi back on, even though I would incur additional charges!
    BUSTED, VERIZON!
This message doesn't come up when it tries to switch over from wi-fi to mobile data unless you have completely shut off mobile data.
I only mention that I was connected to an external bluetooth speaker because it is the only way (SO FAR) that I have been able to duplicate this "silent switchover" repeatedly.
If I'm on Youtube first, not connected to my bluetooth external speaker, the device will stay on my wi-fi network when I pause the video, connect to the bluetooth speaker, and then restart the video.
If I'm already connected to the external bluetooth speaker, and then open a browser window or youtube video, the device will attempt to change its connection from wi-fi to mobile data.  There is no reason for this!
Yes, yes...  I realize that being connected to an external bluetooth device should have absolutely nothing to do with whether the tablet should keep its wi-fi connection or switch to mobile data...
except that it does!  And there may be other circumstances that I haven't found yet...  I don't know, but I'm watching!
At the end of the day, ANY DEVICE THAT IS GOING TO SWITCH FROM A WI-FI NETWORK TO MOBILE DATA, FOR ANY REASON, SHOULD TELL YOU IT'S GOING TO SWITCH, AND LET YOU DECIDE TO ALLOW THAT CHANGE OR NOT, especially when there is NO REASON for the device to switch in the first place.  In the same household are my Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and husband's Galaxy S5.  They never exhibit this behavior, and yes, we use internet on our phones at home rather frequently.
    Watch your mobile data folks...
Oh, and the Verizon lady called back about 30 minutes later...  asking me again to agree to send my tablet in.  I explained to her that I could now duplicate the problem.  I told her that it would be easy enough for them to check and see if all devices are doing it (which I'm guessing they all do!  there's not enough memory to download any apps, so I doubt it's that...)  I said that with the millions of Ellipsis 7 devices they have, someone in tech support can grab one and try it.  Still no luck, and she still wanted me to send it back and be without a tablet for 2 weeks or more.  I declined.
Anyway, if you've read this far, I thank you!  I would like opinions as to whether you think this should be happening or not, and whether you have had this happen to you or not with this tablet.  Thank you for your time!

Hello this is happening to us also (minus the Bluetooth speaker).  We can't figure out what is causing the data usage.  I turned off mobile data as soon s I activated the device, and got the message that unless I am connected to WiFi.....(that is exactly what I wanted). We watched Netflix for about three hours, then the alerts started.  Like you we have many devices connected and never used over 2GB now all of a sudden we have used it in a matter of hours.  My husband called Verizon  and got the usual doubting Thomas response.  I understand that they don't know my device settings.  So over the phone we check all the settings and turned  off every possible culprit eating up the data and end the call.  By now I have purchased another gig for the month!  Assured we are NOT using mobile data, we continue on the IE path to bliss.  HA!  A few hours later I check the mobile data usage on the Verizon website and that darn thing is still using data.  After two more phone calls and two VERY uneventful trips to the local store we were told to take out the sim card.  This has stopped the data usage, but it defeats the purpose of having the data plan.  I could have just stuck with my Surface.  Verizon sent us a new sim card.  Its been installed and I have set my homepage to Verizon mobile data usage (just kidding) but I am on that site a lot.   I am surprised at the number of complaints about this device.  When we called the Verizon support acted as though this was the first time they had heard about this.   Loved your post, you should write for a living.
