Skype bot malware?

Hi,
I'm not sure if there are other posts on the Skype Community that help with my problem, so I am posting a new topic. I have had issues with malware for a few months now. First it was my LAN settings resetting to manual connection to a local proxy instead of automatically connecting every time I restarted. Recently, the internet has seemed slower than it should be. I suspect that the most likely source of the malware causing this issue is from the website that I visited from a bot on Skype.
I have kept getting requests from different Skype bots, and have blocked and reported it each time.
Since I didn't actually download anything (IIRC) when I visited the website, I don't know how I might fix the problem. I have already done many things, such as installing and running malwarebytes, and doing a quick and comprehensive scan.
Kind regards,
James

I hope you dont mind randomly chatting for a minute... I found your name on the skype search (angel) lol... what kind of girls do you like?

  • TOM Skype - Adware / Malware (why does Skype coope...

    Hello,
This is a repost, since this was not answered in roughly the last two years since it was posted. I would link to the old post, but it seems that it's "not permitted in this community" when I try to link to it.
The old post was posted in 2009, and had included several other users also asking for an explanation.
"It's disturbing to me that Skype can claim to care about privacy, security, and trust, while cooperating with a company like TOM. What's worse - if you type "skype.com" in your browser in China, you get redirected to the skype.tom.com site.
TOM skype includes advertisements, malware, and spyware, and there have even been reports of trojans being bundled with it available from the tom-skype website. This obviously goes completely against the principles that skype claims to embrace.
Anyone from Skype have an explanation for this? I personally love Skype - but it boggles my mind that there could possibly be justification for cooperation with an unethical company like TOM. "
"This is true and completely unacceptable. Skype, downloaded from China, not only features constant adware (much of it unsuitable for children btw, not to mention extremely irritating), but also allows dodgy advertisers to send chat messages. It is hugely disappointing, and a huge blow to skype's integrity. Completely unprofessional. The re-directing trick (there is no warning at any stage that the user is downloading a different product) borders on criminality. "
"that is nothing compared to my experience.
after doing a system reinstall and trying to download skype from china, i got sent to skype TOM via the redirect, installed it, and then found that i could no longer use my bought and paid for skype credit.
i was told my call could not be completed, and asked to buy new credit in the form of RMB.
i am now downloading a normal copy of skype from p2p, hope this does the trick.
I am VERY, VERY, dissapointed. "
"Why are they so bloody ignorant. they don't care for their users. I hope they be doomed soon. this Skype Tom is SO Fckn Irritating....They should DIE!!! "
"The truth is, Skype participated in efforts making china an unsecure place to use Skype if you use the golden keywords of "milk powder", "democracy", "communist" or whatever ..
    -- link removed --"
"Forget about the political thing - it's all about economics and making money. Skype Tom is the most ridiculous partnership. I guarantee that Skype HQ doesn't know a thing about what's happening - each time i sign in i get a bunch of pseudo *beep* popping up for tom.com. It's garbage - and when i contacted skype support, they were oblivious - and didn't even seem to know what Tom.com was. Someone in Skype sold a contract and made some fast cash. The brand value was offset of course, by an amount 10x greater than that contract. "
"The worst thing is not only that I managed to circumvent the annoying Tom.skype website and download an international "Chinese" free copy of the program, the really annoying issue here is that when the last update came to place, I found it to be a bit weird that my antivirus program found some malware software in it. I'm really disappointed with this, since I believe even if you "cooperate" with Chinese authorities, you can not shove up our throats a "conveniently" manufactured lie in order to please some. We should be able to download or at least continue using the malware-free version of Skype, not this completely inappropriate excuse of a software. Sure, the quality is better than the one I used to have when using the international version, but what's the real price? "
"No one really seems to care .. How wonderful .. No comment whatsoever- If you're in china- everything you know about Skype is foul .. Security is not an option .. "
"As an expat living in shanghai, i recently reinstalled my windows operating system.
I use skype to talk to my family, and so tried reinstalling skype.
I was redirected to the TOM skype trojan site, and figuring it was just the localized version of the normal skype site, i downloaded. After running it, I realized what this was, and uninstalled.
From some basic googling i have found that TOM skype actually records, or at some point did record, your conversations. The recorded conversations were uploaded to their servers, where the China Communist Party government would then have full access to them.
This needs some answers, and is a serious breach of trust!
quote from wikipedia, feel free to see their sources:
Since September 2007, users in China trying to download the Skype software client have been redirected to the site of TOM, a joint venture between a Chinese wireless operator and Skype, from which a modified Chinese version can be downloaded.[116] The TOM client participates in China's system of Internet censorship, monitoring text messages between Skype users in China as well as messages exchanged with users outside the country.[117][118] Niklas Zennström, then chief executive of Skype, told reporters that TOM "had implemented a text filter, which is what everyone else in that market is doing. Those are the regulations." He also stated: "One thing that’s certain is that those things are in no way jeopardising the privacy or the security of any of the users."[119] In October 2008, it was reported that TOM had been saving the full message contents of some Skype text conversations on its servers, apparently focusing on conversations containing political issues such as Tibet, Falun Gong, Taiwan independence, and the Chinese Communist Party. The saved messages contain personally identifiable information about the messages' senders and recipients, including IP addresses, usernames, land line phone numbers, and the entire content of the text messages, including the time and date of each message. Information about Skype users outside China who were communicating with a TOM-Skype user was also saved. A server misconfiguration made these log files accessible to the public for a time.[118][120][121] "
I think your customers (including me) deserve an answer.

Of course, anything you do at an Internet bar is certainly logged and that is not really an issue (as you should be aware of that). Communicating with a user of TOM Skype though, has no warning. Additionally - Skype claims to be "safe and malware free" - but this is clearly not the case for TOM Skype - which also has a bunch of adware in it in addition to the spyware / malware..
Thank you for the response, but I would like a response from Skype support (I've been waiting for two years).

Skype 4.2.0.11 has abnormally high CPU usage while idle.
I can't get my laptop under 70 degrees celsius unless I cpulimit or quit skype, and cpulimiting it actually makes it completely unresponsive, as if some other thread is constantly generating a lot of work and taking priority over the UI thread.
What the heck is skype doing? (And why do any of its threads need nice -10?) It takes up more CPU time than pulseaudio, truecrypt, and deluged combined.
Its CPU usage is constantly between 5 and 50 percent*, it's absolutely horrible.
*While idle. I'm unable to make calls.
I know this is expected from a linux user, but for all I know, Skype is malware. It's not open-source, so I can't find out for myself, and there are no open-source alternatives so the frankly shameful amount of bugs I encounter in Skype will never be fixed.
There are several bugs I'd love to be fixed in Skype, but first, PLEASE, optimize your code. It's absolutely horriffic at the moment.

Attached are statistics from my desktop over approximately a 24 hour period for the processes shown (other than firefox and adb).
Pulseaudio tops skype this time but that's because I've had music playing through mpd for a few hours. Skype uses more than 16 times the CPU that pidgin does, and almost double the RAM! RAM isn't shown in the screenshot but take my word for it. Bear in mind that I haven't taken (or made) any calls in this period of time, and pidgin has been signed into three different services and using encrypted chat.
I really wish that at least the protocol would be documented so someone could work around this, at the moment I don't think the guys writing skype realize just how unstable the linux port is. At least it's better than the Android port.
[Edit for those unfamiliar with linux processes: "TIME" is the cumulative time that the program has been scheduled for on any core, effectively making it a measure of total CPU usage for a given time period]

  • As soon as I open Firefox it crashes, even in safe mode. I've tried all the options to fix the problem but to no avail. My crash report number is: 1326236186. I hope this helps!

Firefox crashes as soon as I click on the icon. Even in safe mode. I've tried all options of resolving this problem but nothing is working. I really hate using Safari and Chrome. Please help!

Scan your computer in safe mode for bots, malware, trojan's and viruses. Remove any Found and reboot. If Problem still exists, go to control panel, add/remove programs remove firefox. and then download and reinstall firefox. Remember to always close as many running programs like messangers and widgetts when installing any program. This should fix your problem. only other option is to do a system restore to when you were not having any problems, this works 90% of time.

  • Have premium account with free calls to Germany --...

    Hey everyone,
I have a SKYPE PREMIUM account with free calls to Germay since now more than a year.
I did not have any problems with the account so far till I renewed my subscription last week.
Now all of a sudden I can `t reach any number in Germany any more.
After spending 20 min in the chat with the support team all I got was : This provider you are trying to call is not supported (yet I was calling it all the time before the renewal).
The support was very poor, I even think that I was chatting with a robot since my case was obviously not completely understood and she (NICOLE F. ) always gave me the same answer.
DOES ANYONE HAVE SIMILAR PROBLEMS and a better suggestion than the skype bot??
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Video Call Attack Attempt

On Jan 3, 2014, I initiated a video call for the first time in several months.  Immediately, my Norton Anti-Virus program notified me that an attack on my computer had been stopped.  The notification gave me the attackers IP and URL.  I have reported this attack to the server company host.  Has anyone else experienced this problem?  Is this another breach of Skype's security?

Hi, DinMA, and welcome to the Community,
Please also report this incident - out of security and privacy concerns, you cannot report the details here on this public website - to Skype as well, via e-mail: [email protected]
I have read elsewhere in the Community that on occasion the anti-virus software suites mistakenly flag Skype as malware.  You may wish to review topics on the community message board matching your computer's operating system for more information.

  • Bot or malware. Really! For Apple. Disaster.

I don't care what Apple's company line is about malware. I've been hacked and something creepy installed. On Friday, August 13 2010, according to the logs. It calls itself " fcukuW " and my machine is a bit haywire. This thing is down in the Main System Files, I can't open any Preferences files in Library, and if I try iTunes opens and a random song will play.
When I'm watching the logs and pull the ethernet cable it screams about being "cut off from the red stream".
And the computer is slow as a garden slug, I suspect all my traffic is being routed and logged through somewhere. I have lawsuits brewing, but it may just be China botting Apples at last.
And more. BUT- How do I get rid of it? If I reload the operating system it's then sitting in a file, and who wants to bet it gets loose? Ever try to throw away an old OS? It takes your iTunes, iPhoto, and other apps with it! (I've done this).
What do I do? If I get a new machine it could ride my files in. I don't know of any bug killers- Apple says we don't need them and they're mostly right.

There were files all over, they disappeared after I told my mom I have an appointment at the FBI Cyber Crimes lab. And I caught the brother coming out of my room. There are invisible files in Library under Preferences; they flicker periodically. And Preferences files are all booby trapped to not open; double click on one and iTunes opens. Rather clever.
Yeah, I DO have it on password needed every ten seconds for everything. But I'm sure they show up in any monitoring being done on my traffic. Fishing for who my lawyer is would be a big part of it. So it's become useless.
Maybe I need to just call back that guy at FBICCLab and cry until he takes it in. They ought to bust idiots like this before he just gets worse. And what's at stake property and chattels wise is considerable. And even if he installed it, there appears to be a signature of who wrote it. Big Federal crimes all around.
I used to know how to invisible a file, but forgot since I don't break, enter and steal or harrass. And I'm having trouble with ClamXav. There may be armament against that in Psycho Bug. It flickers and I see it... or them. But I can't open them.
I copied the logs that record what it does. I don't have a clue what all those numbers mean. And things have been entered at the command line, I would think some one an iota more computer literate than me could pull that up. I don't know how. But a copy of the Terminal icon was left out where I couldn't miss it re-titled something I can't post on a family sight. Any place the machine says "owned by" it's no longer me. It's fcukuW. And more....

  • Skype group chat bots?

    Hi,
I'm part of a group chat  with a large number of members, and we would like to be able to have a group chat bot to answer some common questions for the members.
This bot would only join that one group chat and only answer when it for questions directed specifically to that bot (for instance, "BotName, what name does [skype username] go by?"), so it wouldn't be spamming.
Would this be an acceptable use of botting on Skype? It's something that would add a lot of utility to our group chat (and, I suspect, to plenty of other ones as well).

Is anyone from Skype going to reply??

  • Help me! Skype is sending me to malware.

Skype is connecting me with IP's that contain harmful malware. === Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Domain: IP: 41.203.69.17 Port: 29306 Type: Inbound Proces: Skype.exe ===

Skype connects to a great many IP's if not firewalled. Malwarebytes uses a list approach (which they do not maintain themselves if nothing changed recently).
Unless you actually have malware on your computer, Skype will not download malware though any of the IP's it uses for various function, such as relaying and other tasks.
Yes there is alot of "strange" IP's but Skype is supposed to behave like this.
Malwarebytes (realtime FW scanner) reports a lot of false positives, due to the aforemention use of a (public), list. To avoid this, add Skype (skype.exe) to the whitelist (network exclutions).

  • My Macbook all of a sudden can't open Skype, Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Entourage. I have done research and read that it has something to do with malware and viruses. Please help I feel like I have tried everything!

This started a few days ago, when I noticed skype would not open and keeps quitting unexpectingly. Now it's all of my microsoft office programs. I have read horrible things on the internet about creeps building some sort of 'backdoor' through Mircosoft Word and are now able to access my macbook. I want to feel safe again and I want to be able to use skype again. I think I will delete Microsoft office until I find/can afford a better version.
I have tried deleting and re-installing the programs, PRAM-ing my mac, doing the utilities organizing thing, and I downloaded 4 different scanners (Cleanmymac, VirusBarrier Express, Bitdefender Virus Scanner, and ClamXav) to help get rid of this and only one scanner found a small file that was harmful. I need some advice PLEASE!
    Thank you for your time!

Sorry I'm just getting to this now, but a lot going on today in this front. There is now a "K" version of Flashback and perhaps more going on.
A couple of considerations you need to be aware of.
It's clear from the results of your testing that the reason you were infected is because your Java is out of date, so it's important that you keep all your software up-to-date going forward.
But even that won't protect you from this new "K" version as Apple has not released the patch to it yet, so I encourage you to disable Java in all your browsers and consider doing so for everything by opening Java Preferences (located in /Applications/Utilities/) and unchecking the box next to "J2SE 6.0" and any other box that might be checked. If you find that some application(s) you need must use Java, then you should enable it only to run that application(s).
We cannot be certain that what you did totally killed the Trojan, so your best bet would be to restore your Mac back to where it was before you were infected using TimeMachine. If you don't have a TimeMachine backup or cannot determine the date of infection, then your safest solution is this one:
    Courtesy of Linc Davis:
I suggest you take the following steps immediately:
    1. Back up all data to at least two different devices, if you haven't already done so.
    2. Boot from your recovery partition (if running Mac OS X 10.7 or later) or your installation disc (if running an earlier version of the Mac OS), launch Disk Utility, and erase the startup drive. This action will destroy all data on the drive, so you must be sure of your backups.
    3. Install the Mac OS.
    4. Reboot and go through the initial setup process to create an account. Don’t import anything from your backups at this stage.
    5. If running Mac OS X 10.6.x or earlier, run Software Update.
    6. Restore the contents of all the top-level subfolders of your home folder except “Library” from the most recent backup. You can also restore the files in the Library folder, but don’t restore any of its subfolders; only the files contained in those folders, and only if they’re visible in the Finder. Don’t restore any hidden files or folders, no matter where they are.
    7. If you’re running Mac OS X 10.5.x or earlier, disable Java in Safari’s preferences, and leave it disabled until you upgrade to Mac OS X 10.6.8 or later, including all available updates. The Java web plugin is unsafe to use under older versions of the Mac OS. Note: I’m not referring to JavaScript, which is unrelated to Java, despite the similarity in the names.
    8. Change every Internet password you have, starting with banking passwords. Check all financial accounts for unauthorized transactions. Take this step only after you’ve secured your system in the preceding steps, not before.
    9. Reinstall your third-party software from fresh downloads or original media, not from backups which may be contaminated. If you use any third-party web browsers under Mac OS X 10.5.x or earlier, disable Java in their preferences, as you did with Safari in step 7.
Of course, as of this morning you should follow my instructions for disabling Java and ignore his, at least until Apple gets that Java patch out.
Pay particular attention to Step 8 no matter what you decide to do.

  • Bots on Skype

Here's a wonderful thought: Make people who are trying to make a Skype on a different **bleep**ing computer verify who the **bleep** they are, because MY little sister who is 10 just got messaged by 4 different people who sent her links to porn sites. Because I'm getting sick and tired of people messaging myself and sending these links and to my little sister as well, and we can't report it as something else OTHER than spam.
    Yours truly,
a really pissed off Skype user.

I totally agree!  I think ALL the major chat programs used on the internet should have more secure systems, I think Facebook should be the same too.  Before anyone can sign up they should prove who they are by either a signed photograph scanned and emailed or provide Skype with bank card details and address.  Skype should then do a basic security check and match the address/card details to the persons name.  Like companies do for security checks or credit checks.
The internet is getting worse because it isn`t secure enough and can be exploited too easily by Mr Anonymous!

  • Skype has by far the worst customer support I've e...

I must say, I've been confronted with the worst of the worst: Comcast, Valve, AT&T but your customer service is a new peak.
It's the most incompetent and unprofessional customer service I've seen in pretty much my whole lifetime.
I had a rather simple issue of my account being compromised and my password changed. So I contacted Customer Service step by step by your FAQ, filled out the form and provided all necessary information. Since that point, I have received 4 mails from 3 different employees (? I'm not even sure if these are human beings or just automated bots), telling me the same thing over and over again, prompting me to fill out the same form that I've already filled out thrice(!) with no results whatsoever. I keep getting the same copy-pasted default text every time.
Do you people just have a network of bots sending a case around while copypasting the same text in it with the variety of putting one made up name from a long list to give the customer the illusion that his case is actually being worked on?
So, customer service obviously has no intentions of helping me recover my account and drags a usual case in bueracracy without any results while treating their customers like complete morons.
I will be looking for an alternative messanger for me and everyone I know and not going to bother making a new account, knowing how things are handled around here.
I guess this is what the illusion of monopoly does to you. Making you treat your customers like utter garbage because they "have no other choice". Way to go, Microsoft.
Edit: I just saw in related posts that other people had the same problem with the same frustration and never got an answer so I just wasted another 10 minutes on absolutely nothing because Skype doesn't care about their customers. I'm actually not surprised, seeing similar things in the industry every day.

I also was talking to Francis F. Who forwarded me to the security team. I also asked if it would make any diffrence instead of being asked  the standard 4 questions I got asked many times. She said Yes. Today I saw  my mailbox and suddenly saw a skype message from the security team. It had the same 4 questions in it I need to awnser before getting any help...
