This file showed up on my desktop immediately after a crash.
If I try to drag it to trash, I get this...
It won't open, and upon right clicking -> get info, it does nothing.
Anyone had this happen before / know how to remove it?
    Thanks!

Oh i forgot, some days ago, i managed to download the original file (it's a subtitle file), and the new one 'fused' with this that cannot be deleted, than i deleted it, and worked. Later, after restart the 0kb file appeared again.

  • I am having trouble with replacing my old Firefox version 3.6.3 with the new 9.0 version on my Macbook. I have it downloaded as a dmg file, but I keep getting a message that the opertion cannot be completed because the item Firefox is in use...HELP!

After having the issue with my photos being blocked on Facebook, I was told I needed to upgrade to the newest version of Firefox and that the version I am currently using (3.6.3) is no longer supported with security updates. I have tried to follow the steps in the upgrade process through Firefox itself, but have been unable to do it...I would love step by step instructions to walk me through it as I don't know what I am doing wrong.'''bold text'''

If there are problems with updating or with the permissions then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.
Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the disk image (dmg) file to the desktop
    *Firefox 9.0.x: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all.html
*Trash the current Firefox application to do a clean (re-)install
*Install the new version that you have downloaded
Your profile data is stored elsewhere in the Firefox Profile Folder, so you won't lose your bookmarks and other personal data if you uninstall and (re)install Firefox.

  • Is it possible to reinstall a program from a dmg file(s)?

    Hello All

Well now we need to reinstall and I can't find the orig disks.
How, and can we just drag the dmg files to the desktop and just open them and run?
    Thanx, any advice much appreciated.

  • DMG Files not opening on my G3/366 clamshell (running 0S X 10.4.11)

I have one final issue with my G3/366 clamshell (running 0S X 10.4.11), cant seem to add software. Download a dmg file, extracts to desktop but cant open extracted file. I've done a Disk repair on start up but that didnt help, anyone got any suggestions? Everything else appears fine.

True but I think that the disk image mounter is not working so I'm not getting the option to drag anything anywhere. How do I repair the disk image mounter?
    Just tried after reading on a www forum;
    Run /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.
Click on "Macintosh HD in the left column and then press the "Repair Disk Permissions button. I don't think this step was part of the solution to my problem.
    Delete the file called /System/Library/Extension.kextcache
    Delete the folder called /System/Library/Caches/com.apple.kernalcaches/
    Restart
But the deleted files just re apear after start up and the issue continues.
There is no issue with the hard drive, also just booted to Disk Utility again and done a volume repair, no problems there. Grrrrrrrrrrr

  • .dmg file wil not open.

Last night I spent 8 hours downloading a game for my MacBook pro, which is running the latest version of Mavericks. I have the .dmg file on my desktop,  but when I double click it nothing happens. I've been trying online for an hour to find a solution, but nothing's worked! The file is 4.4 gigs, but I've opened .dmg files much bigger than that, before.
Any help is appreciated! Thank you!

That usually means you don't have a complete download or the file is corrupt.

  • Try to mount a dmg file -- Input/Output error

I have certainly searched thru postings, but I cannot quite find a solution.
[1] An external FireWire drive holds a lot of dmg files of application installers.
[2] Double-clicking some, not all, of them results in an Input/Output error.
[3] Toast is always able to mount them.
[4] When the error happens, an attempt to copy the dmg file onto the Desktop results in another error message "The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "<name>.dmg" could not be read or written. (Error code -365)". At this point, clicking on OK brings up a Copy window which hangs. The only way out is to Force-Quit the FInder.
What should I do to rectify these issues?

    I appreciate your suggestions.
The external drive in question is OWC's Mercury Elite-AL Pro with FireWire 800 (2) and 400 (1) ports
It was purchased in February, 2008. Its original connection was thru FireWire 800 to my G5 Tower.
    [1] Ports
The G5 has only one FireWire 800 port, while the OWC enclosure has two.
So, I used the other FireWire 800 port on the OWC.
The same intermittent I/O error in mounting dmg files.
    [2] Cables
I tried another FireWire 800 cable with either of the two FireWire 800 ports on the OWC.
The same intermittent I/O error in mounting dmg files.
So, I switched the connection to FireWire 400 between my G5 and the OWC.
No I/O errors after trying to mount numerous dmg files.
    [3] MacBook Pro
I disconnected the OWC and connected it to a MacBook Pro's FireWire 800 port.
No I/O errors after trying to mount numerous dmg files.
From [1], [2], and [3] above, can I deduce that something is wrong with the FireWire 800 port on my G5 Tower? I thought that both FireWire 800 and 400 ports on the G5 Tower were controlled by the same chip.
    Please advise.

  • Can sombody please explain .DMG files to me?

Hi I have got varios .DMG icons on my desktop which relate to various programmes such as google earth, Messenger, Security and OSX updates from ages ago Etc.
Whats the deal with these? Can they be Deleted or will that remover the programme/update(i'm trying to keep my desktop clean and tidy!)
I'm also trying to prepare my mac for a tiget upgrade (from 10.3.9) and want to make sure there is as little chance of it gpoing wrong as possible.
I run mac janitor each week and i'll do a disc repair before and after the install. I'll also be burning all of my important files (pictures and i tunes library) to DVD'S. Just in case. Anything else i should be aware of?

    James
'If' you install Google Earth on your machine, then it is indeed installed as a program. But you must install it. Merely downloading it, or any other program, to your desktop, whether as a disk image, or in some other format, is not the same as installing it.
Once a program is installed, you can indeed remove the .dmg file from your desktop exactly as 'roam' recommends.
As far as updating with the 10.3.9 combo, you must install it ie run the update. Just putting it in your applications folder will not do the trick. I would take it out of the applications folder, put it on the desktop, run it from there by following the instructions and then dump the .dmg file once the update is installed.
You should quit all applications before installing the update and will almost certainly have to restart your Mac once the update is complete. Some people also repair disk permissions using Disk Utility after installing new software.
    Good luck.

  • Cannot restore .dmg file

Before re-installing Snow Leopard I used Disk utility to make a disk image as backup of my HD, and burnt it on a DVD. Now, after the re-installation, I'm not able to mount and open the .dmg file. I'd like to restore important folders. Who can help?

Are you dragging the .dmg file to the desktop before you try to mount it?

  • Anyone know how to repair a corrupted .DMG file? I recovered the file using Disk Drill. There are actually 4-6 files I have encrypted into a DMG - now they are back on my desktop (deleted them months ago) and the size is correct (between 500-900 MB each)

I deleted several .mov files a while back that were encrypted into a .dmg file. Using Disk Drill, I was able to recover 5 of these files, roughly 500-900 MB each and successfully moved them to my desktop. When I try to open the .dmg file, the dreaded error message "no mountable file systems" shows up. I have tried various fixes based on searches and none have worked. Are these files just corrupted and unreadable, or is there a way to fix?

Thanks for the obvious question. I mean it. The very same thought came to me this morning and, sure enough, I had booted into another drive--my old one that, of course, had the old desktop, etc.
It didn't dawn on me that this was the case since I hadn't set it as a boot drive but I guess in the course of all the restarts I did, it got switched.
    I'm back to normal again.

  • I have a folder and 3 files stuck on my desktop.  When I drag them to the trash I am asked to enter my administrator's password.  I do this but the files and folder will not delete.  I have checked 'Get Info' on each of them and they are not locked?

I have an empty folder and 3 .jpg files stuck on my desktop.  When I drag them to the trash I am asked to enter my administrator's password.  I do this but the files and folder will not delete.  I have checked 'Get Info' on each of them and they are not locked and I have full read & write access.  Grateful for any assistance in solving this problem.

    Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below to select it:
    ls -@Oaen De* | open -f -a TextEdit
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Post the contents of that window, if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.
If any personal information appears in the output, anonymize before posting, but don’t remove the context.

  • External drives and dmg files mount fine, but won't show on desktop

Recently purchased a new Mac Mini 2.3 ghz i5 with OSX Lion. Everything is updated, repaired permissions from the check disk utility.
Still my firewire drive, and any DMG files from software I'm looking to install are not showing up on the desktop. They mount fine, I can write to them, see them on the Finder left siderbar, share them on my intranet at home and use Back to Mac and Screen Sharing without any problems.
Anyone have an idea why this peculiar flaw is occuring? Is it a "feature" of Lion?

Much better: I was in the same shoes once as you
Searching hi and lo for this easy solution.

  • Skype icon stuck on desktop

I have tried all the tricks I know, but the alias seems only to work when the skype icon is on my desktop. If I eject it, then the alias (in my Apps folder) cannot find the app. and I have to d/l it again.
I am sure there is a trick... but I am at a loss.
    Any suggestions out there?
    Thanks.
macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   black

Had this trouble with firefox as well, but got that one to work after a couple tries.
I have repaired my disk permissions.
Still, the Skype icon (not the dmg) does not seem to want to go into my applications folder. When I put it in the app folder, it just makes another alias nd remains on the desktop.
If I 'eject' the icon from my desktop, then the alias says it can no longer find the application.
Again, I am sure (I hope) there is an easy fix here...

  • Can not mount DMG File for Skype

Hi, I am suing Mac Leopard 10.5.6..I download skype from its official website, and I can't mount the DMG file. I tried download it again and restart the computer but it doesn't work. It gave a reason: "Not recognized" for Image "skype 2.7.0.330.dmg"

    HI,
*" I am suing Mac Leopard 10.5.6..I download skype from its official website, and I can't mount the DMG file."*
    Apple doesn't write Skype software.
Try repairing disk permissions. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select FirstAid, then click: Repair Disk Permissions. Quit DU when it's finished and reboot.

  • .DMG files won't mount on desktop nor will my iPods

My iPod classic won't mount on my desktop, nor can I get the iTunes .dmg file (or any .dmg file for that matter) to mount on my desktop. My iPod has worked fine for years. Now it won't mount on my desktop but it'll charge just fine. It used to automatically launch iTunes when I plugged it into the USB port, but now it won't. And when I launch iTunes, iTunes doesn't recognize it at all so I can't sync. I've tried restarting my computer, upgrading iTunes, switching USB ports and restoring my iPod. Still nothing. I don't think the problem is with my iPod, I think it's my computer. Because I just bought a brand new iPod Shuffle yesterday (because I thought my old iPod was dead) and the brand new Shuffle won't mount on my desktop either and won't automatically launch iTunes and iTunes doesn't recognize it at all to sync it. (I checked and my iTunes is up-to-date.)

Well, now I can't get it to safe boot. I've done it before, no problem but it won't work, now. I restarted, holding the Shift key, and it never would start after 10 minutes or so but the fan just kept getting louder and louder. I tried it 3 times. Then I tried booting from the Disk Warrior CD and it took 3 tries before it finally booted off the CD—I would hold the C key and it would just sit there and not start up and all of the sudden the restart gong would go off, I'd still hold the C key and it did this 3 times before it finally started from the Disk Warrior CD.
Did you want me to try moving those files off to the desktop even though I can't restart in safe boot or run disk utility?
I'm gonna call it a night for now. Maybe I can try the safe boot again tomorrow. How long do you think I should hold down the shift key before I give up?
    Thanks again!
