Skype doesn't open, Windows 7 ult, 32 bit

Hi all,
Apologies if this is a much repeated post, but I can't find a specific solution. Basically, Skype will no longer open on my parents computer. They don't know if they changed anything for this to happen (ie sw updates etc). At present when you click to open it, it seems to load breifly, then nothing happens. Looking in task manager Skype appears there breifly then dissapears.
They are running IE 11, and the latest skype. IE works without error generally. I have also tried using IE 10 and the beta skype recommended on another forum post, but it didn't make any difference. I also tried renaming the folder in App data from 'Skype' to 'Skype_old' as i've seen recommended elsewhere, but this didn't help. I also deleted the DB temp files, reset the setting for IE, deleted temp internet files, rebooted the computer without any extra programs running to see if there was a software conflict etc.... none of this worked.
Any new ideas? There is an error in Event viewer which reads:
Faulting application name: Skype.exe, version: 6.18.0.106, time stamp: 0x53d13f6d
Faulting module name: ntdll.dll, version: 6.1.7601.18247, time stamp: 0x521ea91c

Faulting module path: C:\Windows\SYSTEM32\ntdll.dll
Report Id: 25ec0198-239e-11e4-a631-6c626d892bc8
I don't know if anyone has an understanding of what this means? Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks

  • Opening mail application from the dock sometimes doesn't open window.

In Mountain Lion, sometimes when I open Mail on the dock with a single left mouse (or touchpad) click, the Mail application opens, as shown in the menu bar, but a mail window doesn't open. I must then click or double click on it to get it to open a window. No other application in the dock behaves this way. How can I fix this?

Is there a problem with mail opening from the dock?
NOPE!  Do you have open at login enabled?  Is Mail listed in Login Items through System Preferences?

  • Window doesn't open window all the way using "+" sign

I made the switch from Windows to Mac a few years back and besides not having a HDD activity light, the biggest pet peeve I have about Apple's OS's is that they don't allow you to click on the "+" sign in the upper left hand corner of an open window to get the window to open fully or maybe it's a trick that I haven't been taught. I works when you use it while using "TextEdit" but not on other applications that I've used. They added that feature to Safari for Windows so I'm sure that it would be no problem to insert that line of code in Leopard or Tiger that would take care of that. It would be moot point to ask Apple why so my question is, does anyone know of a 3rd party app. that does that job for you? The only reason I'm asking is because it's a real time saver for me and I'm sure for a lot of others.

    firstmacnewbie,
I'll explain the issue, even though it doesn't help you. You see, Windows does a few things as a result of historic deficiencies that it has had. Just so we're clear, these deficiencies are no longer present in modern versions of Windows, but Windows users are accustomed to the little quirks that accompany them- all of which still exist in Windows- nonetheless.
Most of these issues relate to Windows' historic lack of multi-tasking. In your case, you are used to the behaviors of a machine and OS that will only display one window at a time, one application at a time (again, this is historically, but the tendencies still exist). When Windows would only display one application window, users got into the habit of viewing and using only one thing at a time.
Another glaring difference that springs from the same historic lack of multi-tasking is the use of "cut and paste" for file system objects. Because Windows would only display one "snapshot" of the file system, in one window, some "workaround" had to be invented to allow users to move files from one place to another. Thus "cut and paste." Because the Mac OS has almost always been able to display multiple windows, and has almost always had drag and drop functionality, user were able to simply drag files from one place to another. No "cut and paste" was needed. Keep in mind that "cut and paste" is an abstract concept, not related to reality, while drag and drop is very much intuitive and realistic (when you want to move a real object somewhere, you cannot simply toss it up in the air, trusting that it will stay in some abstract "ether" until its destination is convenient. No, you must physically move it from the first place to the second, holding it in the meantime).
Getting back to your specific issue: You would be better served by getting used to the way things are in Mac OS, which is designed around the concept of having and using multiple open windows. This precludes opening windows up beyond their reasonable usefulness. This is especially true with today's modern displays, which sport high resolutions and large amounts of Desktop "real estate." I actually have my Safari window opened up a little beyond what is necessary to display any and all web pages, and it still consumes not much more than half of my display. Why would I want to open it more (it wouldn't show any more of any web page), hampering my ability to access either the Finder or some other application? Why would you? Again, you would be better served by "unlearning" your Windows habits.

  • 6.1.1 doesn't open windows

    Hi,
After updating the safari menus are functioning but no window will open.
    Uninstalled Glims: no succes.
    Safari rebuild: nothing.
By activating a Time machine back up i could copy Safari 6.0.5 to the applications folder. I deleted 6.1.1.. No good.
An update info in Mac software update now tells me there is no update available.
And why can't i replace Safari using Time Machine? Message window tells me Safari is needed for OS x. What's the point of Time Machine then?
Enfin, a lot of fun again. And stuck.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • Read Mail button on the toolbar doesn't open my default mail program

I've just reinstalled Firefox 17.0.1 (and everything else) following a crash. I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium, with Windows Mail (not Live Mail) set as the default email program and I've added a Read Mail button to the Firefox toolbar: all this is exactly as it was before the crash. Windows Mail is selected in Tools/Options/Applications/mailto, and also runs perfectly from its desktop icon.
However, clicking on Read Mail doesn't open Windows Mail as it used to.
I get the message "The application could not be found, please use Toolbar Buttons's options window to correct this". I'm not clear on what it is I'm being directed to do. What and where is the "Toolbar Buttons's options window"?
    Many thanks.

That did it. Thanks very much indeed.

  • Open in 32-bit mode finder flag doesn't always work on all applications

When I set "open in 32-bit mode" flag in Finder (get info window) for Quartz Composer it is respected on normal application launching but if I restart (with updates, ex.) the computer it launches it in "normal" 64-bit mode. (Normal application launching would be clicking the icon)
This doesn't happen with other applications (at least with one other; non Apple) which have the same flag setted, on the same circunstance.
This non Apple application that works as expected already had the flag setted on installation (it didn't require manual setting, I mean).
    Thanks,

This is a known problem with Netflix and Microsoft Silverlight right now. You can try the following:
See if there is an update for Microsoft Silverlight.
After checking for updates, Go to Finder, then Applications. Right click on Firefox, then click "Get Info". Then check the box that says "open in 32-bit mode". Restart your PC, and test again. Does it work now?

  • Skype doesn't work on Windows 7 ultimate computer

Hi! Four weeks before Skipe was working on my computer on Windows 7 ultimate properly. After next update to version 6.6 it's stop working. After start Skype appears blank window and nothings happend for more than 20 minutes. I've read posted messages here and recommendations. I made all recommended - uninstalling Skype, cleaning work folder and registry and new install. After that Skype doesn't work again. I've tried the same with versions 6.3 and 5.1, but all the same happend. Than I try Skype ver. 3.8 and it's workin now. Please help me.

Which version of Internet Explorer? Try Below: Exit Skype: From the system tray >> right click on the Skype icon and click "Quit Skype"  Delete Skype desktop shortcut. Press WinKey + R to open the Run windowWinKey (the button is located between the left Ctrl and Alt with the Windows logo)  Type: %programdata%\Skype\Apps and press Enter.  Rename the folder login to login1. Then go to Skype folder inside Program Files (x86) and go to phone folder and then right click on Skype application and select send to Desktop (Create shortcut) Re-run skype using this new shortcut.

  • I think there is a problem with the latest version of Firefox. When you minimize one window (doesn't matter how many tabs) on Mac, it automatically minimizes all of the other open windows. This never used to happen.

Whenever you have multiple windows open - say one is your Gmail account and the other is a bunch of pages you're using at work - and then you go to minimize the window with Gmail but intend to continue working on the other open windows. Using Command-M (the minimize shortcut for Macs) unfortunately now sends all open windows to the minimize bar in the lower right. Which means - every time I go to look at Gmail, then put it away, I have to reclick to open all of the other windows I was working in. Can this be fixed? It never used to happen.
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
== I upgraded to the latest version of Firefox

Because OS X 10.4* does not have what is needed by Firefox 4.0 and newer.
Linux users are in a similar boat also as they need certain package versions within the last few years as LTS distros (with outdated packages from 4+ years ago) like CentOS is a bit screwed on newer applications like Firefox 4.0. By your logic Mozilla should also support Linux packages from 10 years ago also which would be a really ridiculous thing to do.
I think only the 64-bit Windows Vista and Windows 7 is really supported or will be rather when it comes to 64-bit builds (still not officially supported yet).
Mozilla is still supporting Firefox 3.6 with updates, in which 3.6.16 can be found at http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html

  • Firefox process starts but window doesn't open.

All the suddenly when I start Firefox 11 the window doesn't appear but the process will start in task manager. Yesterday morning everything worked well, but when I came home at evening Microsoft Security Essentials wasn't starting it's protection. I got it working by installing it again. Firefox just doesn't open the window for me.
-I have uninstalled Firefox and rebooted system
    -Ran CCleaner and Spybot S&D
-Manually reset register values with regedit.
-I have deleted all AppData and plugin files.

You are absolutely right homercles. I should have been more precise with the things I did before I ended up on fresh install.
My point in my last post was that I totally tried to re-install Firefox many times and did all the things other people told me to solve this problem. I even went to cycle throught windows registers manually that is also one thing that you don't want to do if you aren't absolutely sure what you are doing.
My solution was absolutely the last thing you want to do to make things work and takes alot of effort, but as I made my judgement IN MY CASE it was the only thing I could do after week of trying to fix this.
