Skype for the elderly

My mother-in-law is an elderly Japanese woman and her Japanese family is computer illiterate. I would like to find an easy platform dedicted to SKYPE that she can use to easily make calls with and receive calls from the USA. The video would please her greatly. Ideally it would be best to run it on a tablet. If I lived in Japan, this would all be fairly easy, but since I am in the United States, I am at a disadvantage because the family does not speak computer. Any suggestions?

YES, I agree.  With the aging of the population, we need a SIMPLE UI for the elderly.  I would like one for iPad that limits the conversations to JUST children (for example) - and LARGE buttons for CALL, ANSWER, etc.    programmed so they can not goof up the UI....  with some ability to AMPLIFY SOUND more than normal

What third party software on the ipad is good for the elderly?

All I was trying to do was to get some ideas for setting up an Ipad for my Dad for Father's Day. It's getting so you can't even ask a question w/o someone blasting you.
I appreciate the links that people provided. For the record, this was not meant to insult anyone. If I go to CNet.com I can get the top 10 downloads. So magazines will last best apps, etc...I did not mean to insult anyone. I apologize if anyone took my question the wrong way.
To narrow this down, my father loves to read, loves card games, board games.  I'm also interested in something that will expand his education on how to use the Ipad.
    Thanks,
    Paul
I just think folks found it such a broad, open ended question it is difficult to really say specifically.
For reading, depending on what your Dad likes to read, you have lots of options.  Many newspapers, magazines and news sites have specific apps for thier content, so you can search for ones that you know he reads.  You can install the iBook app, the Nook app both of which have their own stores to purchase from, but both also support non-DRM ePub formats like those from project Gutenberg, so you may be able to pre-load them with some free books he may like (or give him a Barnes&Noble or iTunes gift card to buy his first books).  There is a Kindle app too, if you do not mind being tied to the Kindle store only.
There are also some excellent crosswords apps if he likes those and I like the board games from Optime software (chess and checkers) but there are also apps for SmartGo, Mancala, Backgammon - just browse the section in the app store to see what catches your eye.

  • IM+Skype for the iphone

Alright I have a question about the skype for iphone service. I thought I understood but aparently not the case. So first to use it i must pay $25 for a lifetime purchase or a $4.95 a month fee. Alright so it's free to call someone's skype account from it and it only costs a small fee to call a real phone? I had thought prevously that it also uses your air time minutes. However, the skype website says it is for the ipod touch as well. How can it use airtime charges then? or is it only free when hooked up to wifi?

what i can gather though is it calls you back. My girlfriend is currently in london so i am trying to find the best way to call her. All I have is my cell phone and a pc, i'm in a dorm room. Otherwise i would just use a calling card and pay $0.03 per minute. Heard about skype for the iphone, I use skype to talk with her over the pc. just would be nice to talk anywhere.

  • IPad Keypad for the Elderly

My mom is elderly, has never used a computer, and is a bit of a technophobe. However, she is interested in learning to use an iPad for email and sharing photos.
Since her hands are arthritic, I was wondering if anyone had experience with an elderly person using either the internal (electronic) keypad and/or the keyboard dock.
    Thanks
    Steven

    Hi Steven,
Arthritis here also in the hands but I've found that using a keyboard everyday really helps to keep the fingers flexible.
If you can, take her to an Apple store or borrow an iPad from a friend that has the external keyboard. I think the external keyboard would be much easier for her.

The processor speed shouldn't matter that much for allowing video calls while doing Skype calls. It might have to do with the amount of RAM in the device, but even that is doubtable.
Poor video quality: indeed the front camera is of poor quality.

  • Skype for the web beta plugin

When I try to install the plugin (Firefox 39), I'm asked for a password.  What password?  I've tried my Skype account PW and my Outlook.com PW and neither works.  I'm not sure what to do next.

I finally answered my own question but it took some Googleing (sp?). For anyone else who has this question, you'll find the plugin here:~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/Drag the Skype plugin to the trash, and it'll be gone from the browser. I am uninstalling Skype Web Plugin for two reasons: First, there is no method of setting up a persistant meeting/group URL for web users; Google Hangouts does this, however. Second, the plugin is not reliable. On first install, it gives the following error message:  Imagine 40+ students telling you that the plugin doesn't work on their Mac. I don't want to sound like a curmudgeon but this plugin doesn't work very well on Mac.

  • Sharing a PPT - using Skype for teaching

    Hello.
I have an online teaching school, teaching kids in China with teachers in the UK.
I currently use Cisco Webex as its functionality for teaching is great, giving me PPT sharing ability and tools to draw and highlight on the PPT slides which is useful. BUT, the connection can be a little bad with Cisco, so I want to try Skype.
I want to know is there a way I can use Skype for the same functions as above ? I will only have up to 4 students per lesson. The most important functionality is to share the PPT.
    Thanks
    Craig

    Greetings, Fellow Teachers,
I am a former teacher myself.  I was hoping other Community contributors would join this conversation before I did!
The Skype client software does not provide a white board or writing tools per se.  What I propose is Skype's screen share facility, which for a group call up to ten (10) particants would require a Premium subscription.  The reason for this is that Skype considers the screen share to be a video feed, so a call with two people using their webcams + screen share = "group call" in Skype.   To take this explanation from a different angle, an audio call to single student, where you as the teacher would use screen sharing, would not require a Premium subscription.
Another note to consider if you choose to use screen sharing: the facility does not work like a corporate group document sharing platform.  Only one person (call participant) could share their screens at a time.
Here is a link to the libary of FAQ articles related to screen sharing so you can make an informed decision:  https://support.skype.com/en/category/SCREEN_SHARING/
I still recommend testing this prior to actually using for a teaching session.  by purchasing a Skype Premium "Day Pass" before purchasing a Premium subscription.  (Please note, the "Day Pass" is valid for 24 hours from the time of purchase.)
    Regards,
    Elaine
Update: Skype no longer requires a subscription for video chat up to ten (10) participants.  Therefore, the outdated portions of my post appear like this.

  • Skype for iPad??

Has anyone even bothered trying to download or use the new version of Skype for the iPad? Might be just me but I am unable to download it from the app store.
I'm still trying to figure out how it would work on the iPad. Like the calling feature. Does the iPad support a headset with a mic? They say it's compatable with the iPad and that you can make calls with the iPod so I thought it would be cool...if it works that is.
    Thanks

    iScared,
I'm not certain if you are questioning the newest Skype version, or if you question Skype for the iPad in general. Anyway, here's my input:
    * I have made at least four calls with Skype from my iPad, before I updated the latest Skype version.
    * One person I called about 50 miles away said the audio was great. I actually knew that already, because my first call was a test to my home voice recorder.
    * Yes, last week I downloaded the latest Skype version, but have not made a call yet.
    * With each call, I used the Apple earphone which came with the iPhone.
    * The iPad has a built-in mic, and Skype has a speaker option, so the earphone is unnecessary. I prefer it though.
    * I would use Skype more often; however, my iPhone has lots of unused (paid) minutes. With Skype, I would need to pay for my use, albeit it's a nominal amount.
    * My longest call was about one hour. No issues.
Yes, Skype or VoIP, via the iPad is very cool. It is great knowing that I can place calls with my iPad if I choose to do so. Oh, there's one annoyance. If your existing U.S. contact numbers do not begin with a 1, the call will not be completed. You must dial as 1 (xxx) xxx-xxxx in the U.S. Either update your contacts list before you download Skype, edit afterwards, or manually dial. Hope this helps.

  • How to create an account for Skype for iphone

Hello all.  Newbie to iphones is back.  I am trying to create an account on Skype for the iphone.  The skype website sends me to iTunes.  Ok, so I signed on with them. Now what?  iTunes doesn't create a Skype account.  I already have one on my PC.  The skype name and password for the PC does not work on my phone.  Totally frustrated.  Why do they make it so difficult? Thank you all for your patience.

Tawnii - where do you enter the account info?  Skype (I've been using it since 2007) does not recognize my laptop skype username or password on my iPhone.

  • Skype for elderly people

I am evaluating the use of Skype for elderly people.   This is aimed at housebound people who can't use a PC and would require a TV based system.
The main use would be the support of elderly people by family, friends, Social Services, doctors etc.
I was interested to learn that you can play chess with Skype.
Are there any plans to develop other games such as Bridge, Whist and other board games?

The TV manufacturer is the one that is in the end creating the Skype interface for the TV, so it really is up to them on what they add.

  • Any way to remove the prompt after Skype for Business patch?

So we rolled out the latest patches to our test machines and everyone got the new Skype for Business upgrade.  When each person logged in they were greeted with a window that said something like:
"Your administrator is set for you to use the Lync User Interface."
We then had to click the Restart Now button which caused Lync to close and open up again and it looked like Lync instead of like Skype.
Is there any way to not have that pop up open and to just have everyone get the old Lync interface as if nothing happened?  GPO, Registry, etc?
We want to minimize any confusion people are sure to have the first time they use it.
    Thanks!

You can enable the SkypeUI (Set-CsClientPolicy -Identity Global -EnableSkypeUI $true) with the backend still being Lync Server 2013 to get the new client look and feeling.
The Skype for Business 2015 RTM Server bits should be out in May, but the current new functionality can be taken from:

Lync Validator - Used to assist in the validation and documentation of Lync Server 2013.
Can I just enable it for individual users for testing?  I tried doing a get-csclientpolicy and replacing -identity global with -identity <user ID> but it said it didn't exist since it seems it's looking for policies.  Not sure if there's
some other way to do that.
Do I need to setup a new policy and just add certain people to it or is there any other way to do that for specific users?
    Thanks!

Options for when an iOS device gets locked because of forgotten passcode:
Restore (and reset passcode) on your device by connecting it to the last computer to which it was connected:
iTunes: Backing up, updating, and restoring iOS software - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414
If you cannot connect it to the computer to which the device was last connected (or the device was never connected to a computer) you will have to use recovery mode to completely reset the device, losing all data:
iOS: Unable to update or restore - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808 - recovery mode (e.g., cannot connect to computer last used to sync device, iTunes still asks for a password)
